A Comparison of the Play and Film

of A Midsummer Night's Dream

While watching the film, A Midsummer Night's Dream, there were both similarities and differences between the adaptation and Shakespeare's play as he wrote it. The following paragraphs will compare the play and film by listing the similarities and differences and their significance.

Some similarities are the main characters, dialogue, and theme. The director of the film keeps the same list of main characters as in the play. However, the adaptation uses a lot of extra characters in the various scenes, such as Theseus's temple at the beginning of the film and the wedding dinner at the end, which help bring the story to life. In addition, the film follows the dialogue of the play very closely, but the director omits lines that he feels are not critical. If the entire wording from the play had been used, the film would have been too long and tedious. Unless one is reading the play while watching the film, the omissions are not noticeable. Furthermore, the play and the film have the same theme, which is love. The story deals with love in a comical manner complicated by the jealousy of Oberon and Titania , the love potions, and Puck's mistakes. The director could have opted to make the film more dramatic or even more hilarious but, like Shakespeare, he chose light comedy.

Some differences are the setting, the bicycle, the phonograph, and the introduction of a wife for Bottom. The setting is the most noticeable difference. The play is set in ancient Greece while the film is set in Tuscany, Italy around 100. In the original play the characters would wear togas. The attire in the film is appropriate for that time in historylong dresses for the women and suits for the men. Titania and the fairies' costumes have plenty of glitter, and when the fairies disappear, they sparkle like stars. Another obvious difference between the play and film is the use of bicycles for transportation. The bicycle was a new invention in the late 1800's and allowed the characters to pedal after one another instead of chasing each other on foot as in the play. One of the funniest scenes in the film is when Puck first discovers the bicycle. Although he is frightened, his curiosity gets the best of him. He cautiously beeps the horn, and then decides to take a ride. The sight of Puck riding the bicycle is hilarious. Also, in the play the music for the romantic scene between Titania and Bottom is played using the tongs and the bones. A phonograph, which was invented in the 1870's, was used in the film. Additionally, Bottom has a wife in the adaptation. She appears to be very controlling, which makes his affair with Titania seem less immoral to the audience.

As a means of preserving the integrity of the play, the director felt it was important not to stray from the main characters and much of the original dialogue. On the other hand, the change of setting is highly significant because it modernizes the story and adds a fresh dimension to the material. By using familiar items, such as the bicycle and phonograph, and simplifying the dialogue, the film is easier to understand and more enjoyable than the play. Even when the vocabulary in the film is difficult, it is possible to conclude what is happening just by watching the actors.

To sum up, the adaptation is well done and the changes to the original play are

minor. Shakespeare would be proud.

The people of Thebes say "Destiny guide me always"(55) at one point in the play, Oedipus, which leads one to wonder why a servant would attempt to defy fate, making a grave mistake leading to an even more devastating ending for the one he chose to save. Although ordered by his queen to leave baby Oedipus in the woods to die, the servant shows responsiveness and a belief in the interconnection among people by giving the baby to a friend to take care of him.

The servant was not bought, but born and raised in the palace of Thebes. After he lied to the queen about his actions he was promoted to bodyguard. He lies again to the queen about the murderer of her husband later in the story and is again rewarded by being able to retire as a shepard in the mountains. He's known as "a trusty servant, if there ever was one" (14), but shows no guilt for his actions. If only the queen knew the deceit he used, she might not see him as such a trusting servant but a puppet master for tragedy. Sophocles makes the shepard a bad guy in the play, even though his pity seems noble, because Greek culture praises responsibility not responsiveness. Greek culture would want him to be always loyal to his master. He knew of the prophecy that Oedipus would kill his father and marry his mother. Therefore he betrays not only his queen but also Apollo, a god of divinity, by giving in to his pity.

Responsive would be defined as sensitive and quick to respond. These are the exact characteristics shown by the servant when given the baby. He "pitied the little baby" (10) and in turn "saved him for this, this fate" (104). Being brought up in the palace he should have all the more reason to have abandoned Oedipus. It should be fair to say he was feeling very sensitive that day. He did not take care of the baby himself, though, but rushed to give him to a fellow shepard, not really sure of what would come of him. He was quick to respond failing to make a sure decision on what would come of the baby but let his emotions control him. A responsible person would have fulfilled his obligations.

A responsible person would also have been trustworthy and reliable. Responsibility is being able to be called upon to answer for his acts or decisions. Oedipus calls upon the older servant after the little baby had become king. Oedipus asked him for the truth only to find resistance. The shepard tried to avoid the question until he is physically threatened. He tried to avoid the responsibility.

He portrayed his world as one and could not bear to harm an innocent baby no matter what his better intuition told him. He felt the interconnectedness between humans. He felt his actions, or lack of, would have a direct and negative affect. He chose guilt over regret.

Some might say he acted responsible because he showed integrity. He followed his code of values by not letting someone die. The servant was raised in the palace, though. One's values come from his environment and how he is raised. It can't be denied that his code of values lay closely with his master, queen, and his home. He acted against his values but with his emotions.

So the fate of the great man, Oedipus, the seeker of truth, solver of the Sphinx's riddle, is settled by a man who didn't tell the truth until he was forced to. A man who gave in to his emotions. A man who acted in a completely responsive way against his better knowledge, his master, and his culture. A man who in no doubt wished to Apollo that he had died that day with Oedipus.

Lord of the Flies ~ Essay

L.J.L

Fear is oxygen for motivation. In 'Lord of the Flies', by William Golding, fear plays a huge part in how the boys react to being stranded on the island. Every action is controlled by fear; although the boys try to conquer their fears, it is impossible to do, because if they were to succeed they would feel no reason to survive or live.

Fears differ from person to person, because of this tension rises between Ralph and Jack. They have differing opinions on what is important due to their fears. Ralph's biggest fear is that they will never be rescued, where as Jack's biggest fear is that they will be unable to kill a pig for meat. "You let the fire go out."… '[Jack] noticed Ralph's scarred nakedness, and the sombre silence of all four of them. He sought charitable in his happiness, to include them in the thing that had happened. His mind was crowded with memories; memories of the knowledge that had come to them when they closed in on the struggling pig, knowledge that they had outwitted a living thing, imposed their will upon it, taken away it's life like a long satisfying drink.' (page 70, 'Lord of the Flies') Ralph wasn't interested in the hunt; he wanted to build shelters, to survive the elements, and keep a smoky fire going, so they might be rescued. Jack wants meat, to do as he pleases, and power. Jack fears failure, this shows in his determination to be a successful hunter. It also shows in his defiance of Ralph's authority. He is so afraid of failure that he won't stop trying to undermine him until he gets what he wants to be chief. "See? See?…There isn't a tribe for you anymore! The conch is gone-…I'm chief!" (page 181, 'Lord of the Flies') Jack believes that if he is not in power, he is a failure.

When we are afraid, we feel safer if we have power, or if someone makes us believe that we have power. Ralph's democratic government falls apart by the end of the book, "There was no Piggy to talk sense. There was no solemn assembly for debate nor dignity of the conch." (page 16, 'Lord of the Flies') this is because the boys have given up hope on being rescued. Their only hope now is to find a way to survive long-term on the island. They fear that Ralph won't be able to help them in this area. Jack understands human nature, the need for safety, and the want of power. He is able to convince people to break Ralph's rules, and that he is a better leader then Ralph. Jack makes the boys that follow him believe that they have power by offering them freedom from rules. Also, because the new "tribe" has so much power on the island, they are fearless.

Fear is also used to control people. They use fear to make rules, and power to make people fear. Jack's tribe used power to inflict fear upon Ralph. As they searched the island for him they would keep on letting out loud howls. He could hear them getting closer and closer, as they hunted him. "He forgot his wounds, his hunger and thirst, and became fear; hopeless fear on flying feet…" (page 00, 'Lord of the Flies'). The new chief hunted Ralph because he thought he might regain power again, he was able to make his tribe follow him by telling them that Ralph was dangerous. They were able to control Ralph, (to make him run and hide), and Samneric, (to make them join the tribe), by taking away their power. The boys follow Roger and Jack's idea of hunting down Ralph because they worry that there is the chance that Ralph was right about the fire, and the shelters, but with him dead there is no need to worry.

In the end every movement is done out of fear. Whether it was hunting or keeping a fire going, to stealing and murder. 'Lord of the Flies' would have had no driving force had fear not played such a large role in the plot.

The search for personal identity is a fundamental behavior for people who live in a society no mater how hard it is. The self-realization is generally composed of many aspects such as culture, gender and age. In ¡°Naming Myself¡± by Barara Kingsolver, this theme is central to the topic; in the short story ¡°The Chrysanthemums¡± by John Steinbeck, the protagonist tries to find a sense beyond her true self likwise. Also, Al Purdy of ¡° The Iron Road¡±, which is not preoccupied with this concept, eventually liberates and reaches his self-realization.

The poem ¡° Naming Myself¡± reveals that the awareness of one¡¯s racial identity is important for people. In the poem, the narrator is an one-quarter Chevokee. Her ¡°restless¡± grandfather fled from his comfortable life to marry her grandmother--a Chevokee woman. He probably feels his life is boring and is curious about Chevokee culture. Although he is forgiven for stealing a horse by his family, he losses his family name because of his marriage. He makes up the name which the narrator guards. Once the narrator could change her name, but she did not do it and keeps it firmly because she is worried about losing his ¡°soul¡± ¨Cher identity and also becomes ¡° restless¡± just like her grandfather. Obviously she is wise; otherwise she may be suffering between two cultures.

In contrast, Elsia in the short story ¡°The Chrysanthemums¡± is not so lucky. She is eager to find her own self beyond his female¡¯s role, so she fails. In this story, Elsia is a mid-aged who has a neat house and a lovely husband. She also is good at gardening. She grows some flourishing chrysanthemums that represent her beauty and his value. When the tinker asks for her flowers, she gives him a pot of chrysanthemum spouts with great joy and even makes up some work to reward him. She seems to find her own value. But unfortunately, when she sees his beloved chrysanthemums are discarded on the road, she truly recognizes that she can never fulfill her wish to be more than what she is already, a housewife. Her silent cry at the end of the story expresses her sadness and helplessness of being a female in society.

Furthermore, the young boy in the memoir ¡°The Iran Road¡± also gives a positive example of the construction of individual identity. He is seventeen years old when he has nothing to do after having quit from school in the Great Depression. He grows boredom and wants to adventure. Thus, he boards a train heading to western of Canada as a green hand bum. He confronts a lot of things such as crouching in a coal gondola in the rain, starving without a sandwich for two hundred miles, being lost in the woods. But he also learns how to board a train, to overcome his embarrassment for a hand out and to take care of himself. What he has encountered gradually enriches his knowledge and opens his horizon. Finally when he almost reaches Vancouver, for the first time he realizes how big this country is and feels a sense of exaltation not only for the sight, but also for strongly awareness of his ability. ¡°How marvelous to be alive and to ride a bare-backed train through such a country.¡± He seems to find his own identity. His physical and psychological maturation makes him ready to face with his coming adult life. The iron road has forged his own identity.

In conclusion, the quest for one¡¯s identity is a predominant activity in one¡¯s life. The pomes ¡°Naming Myself¡±, the story ¡°The Chrysanthemums¡± and the memoir ¡°The Iron Road¡± are the articles that effectively illustrate some aspects of this idea such as ethnic, feminist and age factors. People should be always aware of their identities in order to have better lives.

Mahasweta Devi's "Dhowli" is a sad story of an innocent young girl born in India with its caste system. Dhowli must follow the predetermined lifestyle of a Dusad untouchable. Following the events in her life, we see Dhowli grow from an innocent little girl (as seen through her past actions and decisions due to her circumstances) to a determined and persevering young girl.

Imagine having being put into a prearranged marriage at a very young age where there was no love between husband and wife. Dhowli accepted that. She accepted eating the daily left over food and being beaten up by her husband. She returned home after her husband died of fever because she didn't like the way her husband's brother was "eyeing her".

On the other hand, Dhowli loved to remember the fun times she had with her father when she was little. She also enjoyed the peace she found in the woods. She would lay down or go for a "dip in the stream".

Order Custom Caste System Versus Love paper

Dhowli knew that a widowed woman could never marry again; and that she also wanted a better life for herself than the other Dusad women. She did not want to be used by the Brahmans and ruin her life. So she wore a sari to cover herself. When the Misra boy told Dhowli how he felt about her, Dhowli tried to convince herself that she could never have a life with him, a noble man. But he was persistent in courting Dhowli and finally Dhowli in her innocence gave in and became pregnant. It was very sad that the Misra boy could not stand up to his father and his older brother about his intentions with Dhowli. She began believing in the Misra boy what he was telling her. He said that he would come back for her after one month and together they would open a shop outside their village. However, this was not to happen.

We come across Dhowli waiting at the bus stop, returning day after day for four months hoping the Misra boy will come back to her as he had promised. He never does show up. You can clearly see how persistent Dhowli is as she stands outside by the bus stop in the cold night braving a potentially dangerous encounter with a wolf that was seen in that area. I found it particularly interesting that they had depicted a wolf as an animal that makes people fearful and afraid. "Isn't she afraid? … The wolf was out last night. … Dhowli had also heard that the wolf was out, but she forgot about it." The wolf, to me, sounds like it represents a symbol of power. Perhaps the author is using the wolf in reference to the Brahmans since they are at the top of the caste system, people who hold the most power in their system.

After learning that the Misra boy has gotten married to another girl, Dhowli realizes that he is not coming back to her. She is determined to get money and food from him by demanding him to help support them. If he does not, she will tell everyone that she bore his son. However she does not follow through on her threat of exposing the Misra boy when he stopped sending anymore money and food that was promised to Dhowli.

Determined to support her family, Dhowli makes the ultimate sacrifice by opening up her door when she hears pebbles hitting her door late in the night. In exchange for sex she would get money and food. The Misra family is upset that she has found a way to support herself. They had hoped that she and her family would starve to death. At this point I believe the author tries to portray Dhowli as triumphant in overcoming all of the obstacles the Misra boy's family has put in her way. In the end the Brahman's kick her out of the village. We can hope and conclude that where Dhowli goes she will survive. She has gone through a lot and the worst is behind her. The future for her can only look brighter.

Poetry Response Adrienne Rich Diving into the Wreck

Diving into the Wreck is full of awakening and discovery, along with angst. Rich rejects male mythology in the title poem and discusses contemporary and liberal views throughout the collection. The Lannan Video shows Rich's use of powerful, vivid language, at times offensive but always necessary as in From the Prison House. Her poetry speaks out against injustices and focuses on a writer's duty to keep these injustices in focus. Her poems are clearheaded rather than fanciful and force the reader to ponder the why, what and how questions she often poses in them.

The title poem, "Diving into the Wreck," is an amazing example of the power of word choice and placement. The first stanza uses a descriptive quality to take the reader along in the suiting up of a diver on this journey to dispel old myths. Lines 6, 7, and 10 make use of evocative adjectives such as absurd, grave, and assiduous to color the situation. Rich also creates a wonderful contrast between the diver taking this journey solo rather than like that of the leading man, Cousteau, who has a team to support him.

Stanza two shows the difference between two worlds through the introduction of the ladder. Those who have used it know its function; the others just see it as an accessory. This stanza also uses alliteration in the last line with some, sundry equipment. My favorite portion of the poem comes in stanza three when rich compares the diver to an insect crawling down the ladder. This creates the imagery of a miniscule object entering something vast, as the ocean is to the diver. Stanza four also creates wonderful imagery with the use of the changing colors of the ocean. Stanza six and seven connect well with six showing the search for something permanent and seven establishing the permanence the wreck and the myths.

Buy Diving Into the wreck term paper

"Song" was my favorite poem in the collection. Rich's use of enjambment is exemplary. The effect added to the power of the poem and the question and answer rhetoric. The extended definition throughout the poem was well thought out and descriptive. We not only know that she is lonely but we can feel how she is lonely. The personification in this poem was enjoyable, such as "dawn's first cold breath" or "a house wrapped in sleep." This poem was so full of sensory images that you feel overpowered after first reading it but you also feel like saying, yes, I've been that kind of lonely before.

Rich's poems are both powerful and personal. Personal in the sense that this could be you she is writing about. Rape serves as the best example of this quality. Rich uses "you" as the subject, in the poem making the reader feel that they are being spoken to directly. The characterization of the cop is the strongest part of this poem; you can picture him as the vile creature that he is portrayed as. Stanza four says

And you see his blue eyes, the blue eyes of all the family

whom you used to know, grow narrow and glisten,

his hand types out the details

and he wants them all

but the hysteria in your voice pleases him best.

Rich shows us the guilty pleasure he takes in the awful act that has been forced upon you, but this stanza would be worthless without the last line of stanza three You have ton confess to him, you are guilty of the crime of having been forced. This poem amazed me with its sheer power and strength.

I initially didn't know anything about Adrienne Rich when I picked up her collection. After reading this collection and viewing the Lannan video, she has quickly become one of my favorite poets. She is contemporary and intriguing. Her understanding and use of language and words makes me jealous and I hope to be able to adopt half of her talents in my writing.

Two Austrian physiologists studying testicular extracts of a bull in 184 tested the extracts by injecting samples into themselves. They measured the strength of their fingers before and after the injection with a Mosso ergograph. When the results came back showing a significant increase in strength, the idea of steroid/prohormone use for performance was born (Hoberman 147). The only bad things about these steroids were their negative side effects. The most prominent negative effects are severe depression, shortened temper, public shame and damage to internal organs.

One negative effect of steroid use is severe depression. Depression often is seen when the drugs are stopped and may contribute to dependence on anabolic steroids (Nardo ). It can be imagined the drop in self-confidence when one goes from a strong, muscle building machine, to a totally different feeling of diminished strength and appearance. "They (steroid users) can go from feeling happy to feeling angry or depressed in only a few seconds" (Nardo ). Depression is a hard thing to experience making it a significant point against steroids.

Most have heard the horror stories of "roid rages" or intense bouts of anger and aggression. One of these is a story featuring a police officer that shot and left a storeowner paralyzed over phone usage while on steroids (nardo 5). On the field or in the gym, users have reportedly loved this rage. It may be fine in these places but "… it is undesirable, even dangerous in everyday life" (Nardo 4). This states that living with other people in the world can be potentially hazardous to the user and his or her peers. This is another negative effect of steroids.

Getting caught with steroids, in the past, has left the offenders with a load of public shame. Take Ben Johnson for example "In the 188 summer Olympics… Johnson thrilled the world and set a new world and Olympic record of .7 seconds" (Nardo 17). This is an amazing feat of speed. However his experience was short lived when the drug test results showed he was using steroids (Nardo 17). The Olympic committee disgraced him and took away his gold medal, awarding it to Carl Lewis. The risk of public shame is another effect that just makes steroids unworthy of time and/or money.

Help with essay on Are Steroids Worth It?

Improper use of steroids can cause irreversible damage to critical internal organs. "Large amounts of steroids might overload the organ and lead to liver damage" (Nardo ). Without the liver, the human body cannot function properly. This is definitely one of the most dangerous negative effects. Not only can the liver be damaged, but the heart as well. "Experiments with animals have indicated that steroids can damage the heart muscle itself" (Nardo ). When the heart is entered into the equation, it becomes even more of a risk. It is not uncommon for users to "experience an enlargement of this vital organ" (Nardo ). Damage inflicted upon internal organs is a dangerous effect that large steroid use has been shown to cause.

These effects of depression, shortened temper, public shame, and internal damage are just a few of the negative effects of steroid use. The entire list includes side effects for nearly every part of the body. In short, they can severely damage a person's body. Yet, people still pay thousands for a few extra pounds. For someone considering steroids, it would be wise to conduct further research upon the subject to discover that the negative effects far outweigh the positive and can cause great harm.

ECONOMICS COURSEWORK I

As we all know, coffee is an essential and favourite drink of many people in the world. However, the global coffee market has been facing a difficulty when the coffee price falls steeply in the recent years.

According to the article, the low price of coffee is caused by the global coffee glut. There is an imbalance between supply and demand too much supply and less demand. Basically, the market is oversupplied, particularly with the robusta variety beans. Vietnams rise to be the worlds second-largest coffee exporter is one of the reasons there is a glut of coffee. Besides, we are aware that many other countries like Brazil-the biggest coffee producer, India, Ivory Coast, etc. are producing and exporting more and more coffee. Brazil expanded its farming area, increasing the number of bags exported to close to 50 million from about 0 million. The diagram below will help explaining how the coffee glut affects this product's price.

At P1, the quantity demanded is Q1 while at the same point the quantity supplied is Q much bigger than Q1. There is huge excess supply Q1Q in the market.

The demand is too little in comparison with the supply. There is the huge coffee surplus Q1Q produced from this year's bumper crop. The coffee price falling sharply is obviously right with the law of demand and supply. Some traders worry that if Vietnamese selling resumes and Brazil continue expanding the farm areas, the surplus would grow bigger and bigger. As a result, the market could fall steeply.

However, the case has changed for the last month. Despite the global glut, London futures prices have risen more than 0% as mentioned in the article. How could this happen while the supply is much bigger than the demand?

These are some main factors that contributed to the rise of London coffee prices. Coffee is a kind of biennial tree. This year it makes the huge coffee productivity, which means the 00/04 crop is smaller. In addition, the dry weather limiting rain and making the drought in Brazil causes a potential decrease in the next Brazil crop. A delayed Vietnamese harvest happened at the same time.

Reducing the total output launched into the coffee market, we can see that the supply curve shifts to the left S1 - S. Therefore the price rises from

These factors (except price) make the supply curve shifts to the left. The price rises as the coffee surplus reduces. This is good news for all the countries where coffee revenue takes a big part in the national incomes. But even a slightly rise in this product's price wouldn't change the fact that the market is still historical low.

In my opinion, the Government of each country should find out some solutions for its advantages, for example buying a certain amount of the surplus to reduce the coffee glut. One other not less important why don't we try like the case of OPEC, making an agreement between worldwide coffee producers to limit production and create a balance in the demand and supply for coffee. It is not an easy thing to do but once this is achieved, the problem of coffee market will be completely solved.

Garbage

The citizens of Edmonds Street oppose the city councils proposal to convert the vacant land at the corner of Edmonds and Leigh streets to a city landfill because of the pollution, financial issues, health, safety, wildlife, and our precious community pride.

First of all we need to address the issue of pollution. Pollution is causing us to lose the finer things in life. Air pollution will increase due to the trucks and machinery. Methane gas and carbon monoxide will be very toxic to our lungs. Who wants to walk outside to the smell of fumes in an otherwise nice neighborhood? Water pollution can also be a problem due to the garbage dump. The rain water will create runoff that will seep the hazardous materials into the very water we drink. This can create all types of health problems. The run off from the rain water will also destroy our nice green lawns which will create a whole new problem called land pollution. The hazardous materials will ruin the quality of our soil so that nothing will grow. The dispersal of trash will clutter the streets in high wind and rain storms. The air will be filled with the sounds of noise pollution. Our ears will be in pain from the unpleasant sounds of big trucks and heavy duty machines. Why would we want to bring about all of this mess upon ourselves for no worth while cause?

I would like to propose another serious problem by the creation of the trash dump and that is serious financial issues. The tax base will soar. We the people will be forced to pay for the up keep of the roads were not built to endure such weight and harsh conditions produced by the huge dump trucks. The maintenance of the landfill and the pay of its workers will come straight out of our pockets. We will be hurt from the decrease in property values. Who would want to be near a smelly trash dump?

Cheap custom essay on Garbage

Health and safety is another top priority we should consider. Our precious children will face danger. They can endure infectious diseases that could be life threating and also face possible injury from sharp objects that have been thrown away. The flow of traffic along our little streets will rise. This problem will bring about all sorts of new dangers to pedestrians and our pets. Time after time again we have seen our furry friends die because a big truck has accidentally ran over them. Hazardous materials can affect our well being. The groundwater could be contaminated and end up in our drinking water. There is nothing good that can come from the increased chemical fumes in the air. This will help aid in the rise of allergies and asthma which means more doctor trips. The drug addicts will have a new home looking for needles and this will create a feeling of an unsafe environment.

Our wildlife can threat if the land is taken over by trash. Scavengers will be on the rise in our area. The rats, mosquitoes, flies, bees, and roaches are pest that endanger our living conditions. We won't be able to have a back yard picnic with out being swarmed. The beautiful existing wildlife like deer, rabbits, and squirrels will be scarce due to the harsh living conditions.

The dump will create a huge annoyance to all of the city's citizens. There will be consent noise from the continuous roadwork and trucks. You will have a problem in your departure being postponed due to high traffic volume.

The final issue we need to address is community pride. We will have a loss of recreation. The historical value of the land will be no more. The beautiful scenery of the luscious land will be lost. That part of the city will soon become uninhabited ghost town because no one wants to be near trash.

I pled to the town council to reconsider your position while you still can. Please stop this destruction and keep our town beautiful. The people of the town have spoken and now it is time for you to take action for us.

What Friendship Really is…

It's a hot day at St. Andrews. Victoria is really tired, she is waiting anxiously to go home and have a nap, but two long periods of English were waiting for her. Although she wants to sleep. Her English teacher has this really loud voice that makes the class interesting and impossible to at least try to do nothing. The topic of the class is argumentative essays. Mr. Mc Dowell gives an idea to each student Victoria has to argument "What really matters". Finally the day at school finishes and Victoria can go home to have tea, and a really long nap.

At 700pm she wakes up with no intention of starting her homework. She was really intelligent but very lazy. After a reasonable long time of being around. Vic sits down and starts writing.

Cheap custom writing service can write essays on what realy matters

She wrights, "whatever could really matter, although in my opinion to have a good time and a lot of friends is what really matters. This is because these two items make life to be more interesting and enjoyable. Would you imagine a life without parties, friends to talk to and go to sleep on Friday's nights it would be really boring. I don't mean that to go to parties is what really matters, what I mean is that, that is my way of enjoying life. Other people can enjoy life, doing sports or playing the piano. I think that, friend are part of everybody's life. They are a member of your family and therefore of all the days that you live.

What is it to enjoy life? There are many way's of doing it. And everyone has a different way of having fun. This is because we are all different. Some people like to do sports like hockey and Rugby for example. Others like to play instruments. Although what I really enjoy is to go to parties, this is because I like to dance and hear music, but over all those things I go to dance with my friends, and they are the ones that make the night interesting, It wouldn't be the same to go to a party with out friend because you can't share feelings and happy moments.

As I said before life wouldn't have a purpose without friends. I mentioned this several times during my easy, but it is the point I want to analyse and underline.

Friends are always there you can count on them as they can count on you. They accept you the way you are, she or he admires you, they forgive you no matter what your mistake was, they help you always, and keeps you near his heart. They love you the way you are and don't need you to change to be with them. Friend never judge you and always offers you help. They say nice things about you, he or she understands you when nobody dose, as well as they explain to you things that you don't understand.

As a conclusion, to have a good time and lots of friends is what really matters because both of them make up an interesting and healthy life."

When Victoria finished she had supper, and when to sleep.

The day after at 715 sharp Vic wakes up to go to school, the first period is English, were Victoria, proud of her work hands in. After reading Julius Cesar, she goes to break and chat to her friends. Meanwhile, Mr. Mc Dowell is correcting her work, and while he reads it he is amassed of the things that Victoria wrote about friendship, he also reflects her while he is reading it. He notice that that is what Victoria really thinks, and that is the same why that she acts between her friends, she is always helping and in an being friendly.

On Friday when Victoria when to English, she took a surprise when Mr. Mc Dowell handed in the essay, he told her that it was excellent that he was very proud of her and of her why of thinking. At the same time he tells her that he wants to make a poster with the basic items of the easy, because what Vic had written was what Friendship should be.

This paper will analyze the short story called "The Most Dangerous

Game" by discussing the four main elements of a short story which are,

setting, character, conflict, and theme. The story involves two main

characters, Rainsford and General Zaroff. Rainsford is a celebrated

Cheap custom essay on The Most Dangerous Game

hunter, who enjoys hunting animals. He does not believe that hunting

animals are wrong until he meets a certain General Zaroff.

General Zaroff, is also a man that loves to hunt, but over the

years have grown dull with it. His constant pursuit for bigger and smarter game has come to an end. General Zaroff is devastated because of this, and especially after growing up his whole life with "rifle in hand" and the target in his sights. He decides to take his hunting to a higher level, the hunt for human life, Rainsfords life!

This story takes place in the Caribbean, on a secluded island. The

author chose an ideal place for his setting. The story consists of a war between the two main characters, and what better place then an island which has such excellent geographical features to support this struggle. Some examples are the dense trees, trails, and some quicksand. This setting also makes the two characters display all the skills and tricks they have learned over the years, and then wage war against each other. The setting plays a sufficient role in the storys overall development. Without this setting the story would not reveal the game of "cat and mouse" which is going on. The setting holds the bulk of the action in it, the story has characters hiding in trees, falling in quicksand, and by being led into traps. Not using this setting in the story would make the story miss out on its excitement and suspense. The next few paragraphs will introduce the characters and will provide a psychological profile of them. Some observations will also be made on the relative importance of the element of character in the storys development.

Beginning with the characters which play a lesser role in the story. Whitney is a man who does not believe in hunting and killing animals, he believes that animals understand that there being hunted down and killed. Whitneys main importance in the story is that the author uses him as a "tool", to help us understand the personality and beliefs Rainsford has.

Rainsford is the central character in the story. Rainsford on the other hand, does not have the same beliefs that Whitney has. He loves hunting so much that he does not stop to think whether or not the animals have any feelings or emotions. Bluntly he does not care if the animals feel anything.

Rainsford philosophy is that world is made up of two classes -"the hunters and the hunted." Rainsford has never felt what it is like to be hunted, because he has always been the predator. That is sure to change as the story unfolds and takes a classic twist, where in this case the hunter Rainsford becomes the hunted. Rainsford also proves to be a developing character in the story. Rainsford does this by stating in the latter part of the story that he now understands how the animals feel when they are being hunted.

The character General Zaroff is a very complex character, because he has two sides to himself. One side portrays a well educated, polite, hospitable man. On the other side General Zaroff portrays a very cunning cold blooded killer. Killer in the sense that he hunts humans for pleasure, and does not feel any remorse for them. Which is the result, as mentioned before, of his boredom towards hunting just animals? General Zaroff has the same views as Whitney, in the sense that humans and animals are equal. The difference being, General Zaroff believes killing an animal is the same as killing a man.

"A Death in the House"

It happened few years ago in the beautiful town on the small island on Mediterranean Sea.

It was a great town full of amazing people. Nearby, there was a big forest with green grasslands, tall trees, the most colorful flowers, these wild animals, fresh air and the water, which was so clear that you could see the reflection of that blue cloudy sky in it. There was a small wooden house in the middle of that forest and an old man named Tom lived inside of it, separated from the rest of the town.

He was living there by himself, because few years ago his wife passed away. The years were very hard for him and some people thought that the man was crazy. Nobody really visited him. He didn't have any family who would live close enough, any friends and the people from town, you could say, were afraid of him. Except a mailman who went to his house once a week to drop of mails. The man spent most of his time hunting, fishing or if not he stayed at his little house or he was planting plants. Those tomatoes, carrots and other vegetables were huge and they tasted really good; the landscape looked really beautiful down there.

Write your Book "A Death In The House" research paper

During one of cold nights, the sky was clear and you could see a lot of shiny stars. Tom like always was sitting on his favorite chair reading a book, because they didn't have TV's back then. Suddenly he heard whispering, and tapping into the window. He stood up, but everything got stopped. Then it started again and also the light were out; suddenly everything turned black. A man didn't know what was happening so he lighten up the candle, took his gun and he saw…

Two days later it was a stormy day and the mailman was passing through his house and saw that the doors to an old man's house were open, he knocked but nobody walked out so he made a step forward because he knew already that something wasn't like it was suppose to be and he was curious what it was. It was really strange that he wasn't home because in this rainy day he shouldn't be hunting or fishing. A mailman went one step more into the house and he saw burned candle laying down on the floor and a weird sign next to it. It didn't really say anything but it looked like it was a circle with a cross inside of it. This scared a mailman really bad that he tripped down, but he got up really quickly and run away. He knew then, that an old Tom disappeared somehow but he didn't know what was that thing to made him to disappear. Later the news about Tom's death spread really quickly around the town and people were even more afraid then they were before, but some people wanted to check out the house.

One day it was the same day of a June a couple of kids went down there to explore, as all kids always want an adventure full of excitement. It was getting darker and darker and their parents started to worry about what was going on with them. They didn't come back on the next day so searches began. They didn't find the kids so they were noted as missing and later dead.

Every year there was something weird going on around that house. You could hear screaming people who were yelling for help but nobody could help them, nobody could explain what it was and why so many people disappeared. Every year there's somebody who explores that region and never comes back but there are few exceptions that did come back and their lives changed forever. Nobody knows why and nobody knows who or what is hiding there, whose taking lives of all of those people. The one thing you might do is to check it out by yourself in one of those scary, mysterious nights of June. Have that feeling of being afraid, of never coming back and at the same time have a feeling of excitement and finding out what it is, what's hiding in these woods on that magic island…

On countless occasions we have seen that the key to a well-written story is the presentation of a nicely conceived character who is not necessarily the protagonist. The dialogues and actions in which this person is involved and the way he is first described by the author, are essential to the development of the story. In Flannery O'Connor's A Good Man Is Hard to Find, The Misfita criminal escaped from a federal prisonis the perfect example of this type of character. It is quite clear that for us to have a good understanding of this narrative we must investigate deeply into this man's role. The Misfit's way of talking about life, his cold blooded actions, and the authority he shows upon the other two vandals, are traits that certainly make him a very interesting and profound character.

Being as intelligent as he seems to be by the earliest description O'Connor gave us, The Misfit talks in a peculiar way about what caused him to become a murderer. When referring to the time he got sent to jail he says "somewheres along the line I done something wrong (…) I was buried alive" (06); there is an obvious manifestation in this last statement that he feels betrayed and rejected by the society, because he actually didn't kill his father. The things he says about his parents are in contradiction with the fact that he is a killer "God never made a finer woman than my mother and my daddy's heart was pure gold" (05). How could it be that a man can speak in such a beautiful way about his mother and father, and at the same time be capable of killing a human being?

A second aspect that can be talked about in order to support the idea of The Misfit being remarkable is his cold blooded actions. As O'Connor herself tell us in her essay "… a prophet gone wrong is almost always more interesting than your grandmother" (5), in reference to The Misfit. The moment he kills the Grandmother at the very end, shooting at her chest three times, proves his cold-bloodedness because right after committing the homicide he starts cleaning his glasses. However, we can recall an earlier instant in which he asks both of the present women to excuse him for being in front of them with no shirt. This variety of behavior makes him interesting.

One more quality that is special about him is his authority over all other characters in this story. If we consider from the moment when The Misfit is first presented to the reader until the end, we can easily see that he is the one in charge of the entire situation. Krawiec writes in his essay that "While he was having the other members of the family killed, the Misfit engages in a highly religious dialogue with the grandmother where he explains his feelings on Christianity"; in other words, he manages the other two guys in the execution of Bailey, his wife, and the children, while he is just talking to the Grandmother he has everybody on his hands.

Write my Essay on O'Connor's The Misfit

To conclude, The Misfit's characteristics such as his way of talking, his cold blooded actions, and the authority he exerts on the rest of the characters in the story, make him a highly interesting character. O'Connor is an incredibly excellent writer, but if it were not by her conception of The Misfit, she couldn't have written a story as good as this one in so few pages. What she actually intended to do in my opinion was criticize the society that we live in, and The Misfit was one of the tools that she used to get this message transmitted.

The social issues of the renaissance to romantic era are directly reflected to, and directly influence the social issues of the nineteenth century. This is evident by studying past works of English literature from important time periods.

In early renaissance times, the social issues dealt with power struggle, and class difference influenced many plays, and poems written by Shakespeare. By expressing these social issues through his plays, he was able to communicate to the public in a passive, assertive manner without outright conveying his views. Class difference and power struggle between societies unmistakably found themselves in the nineteenth century as well. This instance, however; government parties, such as the Whigs, and the Tories struggled to achieve a commanding grasp on a political standpoint. Class difference in the nineteenth century had ruled out the classic feudal system, and was progressing towards three main social classes.

During the restoration period, works written by Pope, such as a modest proposal, dealt with the poverty stricken lower class Irish families, and a simple, but drastic solution. Although Alexander Pope provides a great example of a solution moving towards a more 'classless' society, his means of doing so were fairly obscene. Using children as a source of food, and a way for the public to earn a source of income wasn't exactly a realistic solution. Nonetheless, something had to be done, and as mentioned earlier, the nineteenth century was gradually making progress. Almost ruling out the dominant boundaries of either extremely wealthy or extremely underprivileged, the middle class emerged.

Driven mainly by factory jobs, middle class citizens worked, long hard hours in dangerous environments. The middle class had now officially become the affluent class of the modern Victorian times.

Write your 19th Century Social Issues research paper

William Wordsworth's views, expressed in his poem, "The World is Too Much with Us" explained how man has become out of touch with nature, and how society puts great emphasis on technology and materialism. This was another great social issue which greatly effected the romantic time period as well as the Victorian era. Once again, reflecting on the now dominant middle class, and the beginning of the industrial revolution, came the beginning of consumerism/materialism. With the ability to afford various products, a hunger was born unlike no other that has carried on to present day. An addiction would be the idealistic way to describe it. The more 'toys' the public acquired, the more they longed for excess. This social issue was answered, but not solved by numerous authors, and poets. The human race had begun to fall away from the beauty and simplicity of nature, and began to rely on sophisticated, material objects to satisfy our entertainment needs.

The question still remains today. Will we look towards our past and realize the world has so much more to offer, other than synthetic products?

Or will we simply progress further into our addiction of greed? It's the age of a technological revolution. Heading into the future presents it own social issues. Just as quickly as class system had changed, we find more and more unemployed families raising children in poverty. Our government desperately attempts to help these people by providing welfare, but this on its own is a social issue. The unemployed are immediately ruled out of the rest of society. As time moves on I expect to see social issues dealing with how the earth is being governed. A group that continues to burn 'dirty' fossil fuels, and a new breed. A society which protests the use of petroleum will bring a new issue to play. Perhaps it has already started with the beginning of the hybrid automobile, and the hydrogen fuel cell. Only time will tell.

Few poets have written more effectively about school than Carol Ann Duffy.

Saffron Jones

Carol Ann Duffy presents the education system and its mediators in two very different lights in the poems 'The Good Teachers' and 'Like Earning A Living'. The former is written from the point of view of a pupil whereas the latter describes events through a poet, substituting a teacher. The fact that the protagonist of 'Like Earning A Living' is not first and foremost a qualified teacher might suggest that she is unaware of the methods used to encourage and exploit pupils' thinking and therefore be less able to represent teachers in general. Duffy, however, effectively explores the opposing perspectives giving possible reasons for their formation. Not only do the poems differ in opinion but the eras in which they were set could be as distant as thirty years apart; while their type of school and social setting is far from related. For example, the names 'Darren. Paul. Kelly...Marie' are chosen for their socially stereoptypical traits.

Once in both poems Duffy comments on the traits observed in human nature; thus the topic of 'school' is applied to the reader in their re-education or enlightening process. She raises the point that by noting someone's image and appearance one automatically classifies the person without considering personality, as is the case with the poet in 'Like Earning a Living', who, by presupposing the beliefs of Jason's father to be the same as his, makes an assumption, a comment on society, that implies everyone belonging to one particular class will be of the same mind 'Nor does his dad'. The same method is applied when judging teachers, as expressed by the explicit title 'The Good Teachers'. This concept is challenged by the liberal-reasoning of the pupil in 'The Good Teachers' who proposes that people prove to be two-dimensional characters 'Her kind intelligent green eye. Her cruel blue one.' giving rise to a belief that the 'teacher' does not possess all the wisdom.

It is apparent in 'The Good Teachers' that they are the overall victors as their lessons have been imposed upon the school-goer's mind and have remained there until 'one day' in the future. In contrast the pupils featured in 'Like Earning A Living' can retain only the images of a 'Video. Big Mac. Lager', subverting from the set syllabus. Yet only the voice of the former, despite having been predicted a fail, seems not to lament the 'dumb insolence' and ability to 'do better' she portrayed at school. Thus suggesting that restricting one's self to the options and successes available in the establishment is not recommended. Whilst the objective of school is clearly to achieve academically there are other tasks to overcome, such as 'dancing, lovebites, marriage'. With hypothetical phrases such as 'What would aftershave say if it could think?' the poet encourages the students to question themselves and their lives. When, in the case of these pupils, they do not respond she debates the point of either party attending school. The statement 'Major-Balls' uttered by the poet conveys to the reader her feelings that the situation is a complete waste of time, nothing is being accomplished. The use of capital letters is for emphasis of this point.

African Americans were not considered equal to their white counterparts before the passage of the Civil Right Act of 164. They were not allowed to use the same restrooms, eat in the same restaurants and worst of all, they were forbidden to be educated. Slave owners and many white people were determined to keep slaves and free blacks illiterate for the sole purpose of keeping them ignorant and prevent insurrection such as Ned Turner Uprising which killed 1 white Southerners from occurring. These white people feared that once educated, blacks would feel resentment towards their treatments by the white race. Punishments included beatings, heavy fines, and public humiliation for those who made attempts to teach slaves to read. These severe punishments were very successful in keeping blacks ignorance about their identity and their treatment. Yet these strict rules did not prevent Frederick Douglass and Richard Wright from an education. In their writings, they risk everything just to learn the basic skill that every white person had access to. Frederick Douglass' Learning to Read and Write and Richard Wright's Writing and Reading depict the hardships and dangers that they have to overcame in order to learn the basic skills of reading and writing.

A free black man who can read and write is considered an anomaly during Wright's time and an educated slave is unheard of and forbidden during Douglass' days. However, their adversities do not discourage them from obtaining an education. For Richard Wright, a "Negro" who could read and write was a danger to the white community. Even though slaves no longer exist because of the Thirteen Amendment's passage in 1864, many restrictions such as Jim Crow laws and lynching discourage blacks from attempting to be educated. Black people are "not allowed to patronize the library shelves anymore than they were the parks and playgrounds of the city." This serves as one of the many restrictions that Wright has to overcome in order to learn how to read and write. When he is caught reading anything other than newspaper, he risks being lynched by white supremacist groups in the community. Getting a book to read became a challenge for Wright. He had to be careful who he asked for help in retrieving books because those he asked might have been be in the KKK or its "sympathizer." Wright takes education seriously and it helped him become educated. Therefore, no matter what were the circumstances, Wright persevered and gained the ability to further his knowledge.

Unlike Wright, Douglass is a slave when he first learns how to read and write. As a result, he encounters countless restrictions in his pursuit for an education. Douglass is always "being watched" by his masters because they wants to prevent him from learning how to read and write. Douglass' masters always scrutinize him in order to prevent him from reading books. If he is caught trying to learn to read or write, there would be a "severe beating" by his masters. Douglass endures many abuses for many years in the quest of learning these basic skills. He is constantly trying to learn more every chance he got. He would cajole the neighboring white kids to teach him how to write. Douglass would complete his chores as fast as he could so that he could create opportunities to further his knowledge. Other than restrictions from the society around him, Douglass had to learn to read and write by himself without any help and encouragement. Douglass' dedication to educate himself to read and write has transformed him into a better and stronger man.

As Douglass and Wright's experiences show education is not a right for all but a privilege for some. For Douglass and Wright, it become a life long challenge. Many of their friends, family, and ancestors have failed to overcome this challenge. Therefore, this challenge has transformed them into stronger and more successful individuals.

The Great Gatsby and Winter Dreams Meet Head On

"Winter Dreams" and The Great Gatsby have similar male and female character, and setting to illustrate the emphasis of the American Dream. Dexter Green and Jay Gatsby are very comparable in many levels. Not only do these men resemble each other, but Daisy Buchanan and Judy Jones share many personality traits. Besides the characters being similar, the setting and most importantly the weather have much symbolic meaning throughout both stories. Even though these two stories have exceedingly different plots, the comparisons are numerous.

Dexter Green (from "Winter Dreams") is a man who has a obsession with being rich and nothing seems to stand in his way. This statement very much compares with Gatsby's entire outlook on life. As though Gatsby thought being wealthy would make his 'dream come true', it was the antithesis. The obsession of money and being rich was actually the demise of their dreams and in Gatsby case, of himself. The obsession with money on both of these men was a direct result of the women. In Dexter's case, it is Judy Jones, and in Gatsby's case it is Daisy. These two men went after the women that they realistically couldn't conquer. Their lives revolved around money, and they would stop at nothing to get it. In Gatsby's case, he was a bootlegger. Dexter came across the money all at once and fairly from his successful dry cleaning business.

The word superficial is the best and most efficient way to describe Judy Jones and Daisy Buchanan. These women are only concerned with riches and beauty. These traits show the shallow persona both possess. Daisy leads Gatsby on throughout the whole novel. The second Gatsby died, she disappeared. Not only did she leave when he died, but before Gatsby was killed, he needed her the most. At this point, she was too concern with her unhappy marriage. Daisy and her husband Tom are meant for each other, both possessing the same trivial qualities. Judy Jones untimely lost in the end, marrying a man who treated her awful. Judy had a change with Dexter, a man who loved her for who she was. Judy, being indecisive and not concerned with the well being of others, cared less of Dexter's feelings and constantly just satisfied her own. For these two women, one thing that comes to mind is convenient in the end, their sins and bad deeds come back to haunt them. Also this shows that the lifestyles of the rich and famous are not always as glamorous and as elegant as they appear.

These characters in these two stories share common backgrounds. They all have seemed to come from the Midwest and went to New York where "Winter Dreams" partly takes place and basically all of The Great Gatsby takes place. Winter also has much symbolism in these stories. In "Winter Dreams", winter symbolized death. "Winter shut down like the white lid of a box…haunted by ragged sparrows for the long season." Winter is the final step before spring comes, new things arise, and new problems are to be solved. Summer symbolizes the coming out of things that are hidden. "It was dreary, too, that on the tees where the gay colors fluttered in summer, there were now only the desolate sand-boxes knee-deep in crusted ice". The fall in The Great Gatsby much symbolized dying and demises of others. In the end, many people are dead including Jay Gatsby, Myrtle, and Mr. Wilson. The winter symbolizes the finalization of these circumstances, like the lid of a box. Seasons have symbolic meaning and shows hidden meanings in both stories.

It is amazing to see that two stories that are no where near alike in plot have so many similarities. Characters have almost the exact same outlook on life. Settings are practically the same. Weather has the same meaning in both stories. This proves that Fitzgerald writings are well thought out and planned. They have meanings and even hidden meanings. It is just hard to believe how these details of the story compare so agreeably to each other.

"An event that changed your views of yourself"

I always looked at my self as if I couldn't help anybody in an act of bravery but the day I saved someone's life changed my views about myself very quickly. Saving someone's life to me is something taken very seriously and takes a lot of courage to handle. A situation like that brings you to reality fast and on that day reality hit me in the face. I never would have thought in a million years that I would have saved someone's life and got accredited for it, but things happen.

I went to nursing school and learned CPR and first aid in the first month of me being they're. I succeeded well in the class and handled CPR with no problem. I even received an A+ in the class. Nursing school to me at first was a way of getting out of going to college and, helping people never crossed my mind. I just wanted something to do with my life and fast. I felt that way until I realized knowing things like CPR and first aid can help people and helping people helps you to help your self. I realized that the day I saved someone's life using CPR.

Help with essay on The day I saved someone's life

The day I saved someone life I was on my way to school not expecting anything to change from my daily routine. I was getting on a septa bus full with many people. It was a very hot day and no one felt good from the heat. As I got on the bus there was a woman standing by her self complaining about how she was hot, that her head was starting to hurt, that she was dizzy and how she wasn't able to breathe thoroughly. The bus driver asked her if she was felt ill as did some of the other riders. She said I'm fine, so the bus driver continued to drive. When the bus came to a stop light, the lady started to wobble and lose her balance. Someone offered his seat but she refused because her stop was coming up, she said. Right after she refused the seat, she fainted. I was so scared and didn't know what to do once she fainted. I could barely move to help her. The bus driver shouted, "Does anyone has a cell phone? Please Call 11." He then said, "Does anybody know first aid procedures?" As scared as I was, I raised my hand and said, " I know first aid and CPR." So I got down on the floor beside her and began to check for a pulse and her breathing. My heart began to pump faster and faster because she wasn't breathing. I put her on position for CPR and began performing the procedures. I received no movement or breathing. I repeated the procedures twice and finally I got a breath. She was gasping for air and was sweating badly. I held her hand and whispered in her ear. "My name is Chenelle, I'm right here with you, just breathe and you will be fine. The paramedics are on their way." Once the paramedics arrived they took all of my information, everything about the lady that I knew, and they took a record of all the procedures I did.

Afterwards, although I was late for school I felt proud of my self and felt like a whole new person. All because I helped someone. Approximately a week later I received a phone call from some woman named Virginia Lincoln-Graham who was the woman whose life I saved that day on the bus. She told me that she appreciated my courage to stand up and help her and that she wanted to say thank you. A few days later I received a reward check of ,500 dollars. She also gave my name and told the story to the radio station Power FM . The radio station called me asked me questions about that day and how I felt. When It was all said and done the radio station named me "The hero of the day."

So as I came to reality I realize that having courage and believing in your self can reach a far way. Anything can happen at anytime and for that matter you should always be prepared to act. That day changed my views of myself a whole lot and my views will always be to believe in me.

Cultural Imperialism

The forces of cultural imperialism are so strong that assimilation or elimination is inevitable. In Leslie Marmon Silko's story Lullaby, Ayah's children are taken away and learn of a new culture. Also in Lullaby, Ayah finds that after her children come back to visit many years later, the children have changed a lot and are not connected with their original culture anymore. In A Red Girl's Reasoning by E. Pauline Johnson, cultural imperialism is seen taking place in Christie and her family, and how Christie is accepted throughout the community like a white woman.

In Lullaby, a Navajo woman, Ayah, is taught how to sign her name in English by her husband. This is showing cultural imperialism in two ways one is that Chato, the husband, has learned English and has already been affected by the white man's culture; and two that Chato spreads the white man's culture to Ayah by teaching her how to sign her name. When the doctors come to Ayah's house, they ask her to sign papers. Although Chato is not home at the time and Ayah could not understand English, she is able to understand that the doctors want her to sign papers. She did not know what she was signing her name for, but she did not think that it was for a bad cause. The next day, the doctors come back and ask Chato and Ayah for their children. The doctors show Chato the papers that Ayah had signed which allowed the doctors to take their two children.

Many years from the day when Ayah's children were taken away, the children were allowed to come back and visit their parents again. Ayah saw her children and she spoke to them in Navajo, but the children did not understand much of the Navajo language anymore. They had been taught English and could not speak back to their mother in Navajo. This example is showing that cultural imperialism eventually took over the family. First, the father had been taught some English. Then he taught his wife how to sign her name in English. Finally, because Ayah signed her name on papers from the doctors that visited, her children were taken away to learn about a different culture. The children were not connected with their true culture afterwards, they had been changed into Americans.

Buy Cultural Imperialism term paper

In A Red Girl's Reasoning, a Native Canadian woman, Christie, is marrying a white man named Charles. Cultural imperialism is seen here because Christie has already been taught English, and she acts like a white woman. She wears velvet and blue dresses, and she became Christian. She married Charles with a white person's ceremony. There was a priest who spoke in Latin, but he also congratulated the couple in Indian as a compliment to the Indian's that were at the ceremony. In the community, Christie is accepted like a white woman and is friends with everyone. Christie was born from a couple of which the mother was Native Canadian and the father was white. Her father taught her everything he knew, but she still kept part of her original culture in her. The author describes her and says, "One unfamiliar with Native Canadian life would find it difficult to determine her nationality" (Johnson ). Although Christie has held on to her roots as an Indian, she has been changed and affected by the white people that are in Canada.

In summary, I believe that the forces of cultural imperialism are so strong that assimilation or elimination is inevitable. Cultural imperialism from a large culture can be resisted and fought against, but it cannot be stopped, only slowed down. People who resist the forces of cultural imperialism will eventually be killed by the larger culture or they will change their beliefs in order to live. As seen in Lullaby, Ayah's children were taken away in order to be changed. The children were too young to resist, and Chato knew that he alone could not stop the doctors. Cultural imperialism can be deferred and disliked, but eventually a culture will dominate over another culture and take over.
