A Comparison of the Play and Film

of A Midsummer Night's Dream

While watching the film, A Midsummer Night's Dream, there were both similarities and differences between the adaptation and Shakespeare's play as he wrote it. The following paragraphs will compare the play and film by listing the similarities and differences and their significance.

Some similarities are the main characters, dialogue, and theme. The director of the film keeps the same list of main characters as in the play. However, the adaptation uses a lot of extra characters in the various scenes, such as Theseus's temple at the beginning of the film and the wedding dinner at the end, which help bring the story to life. In addition, the film follows the dialogue of the play very closely, but the director omits lines that he feels are not critical. If the entire wording from the play had been used, the film would have been too long and tedious. Unless one is reading the play while watching the film, the omissions are not noticeable. Furthermore, the play and the film have the same theme, which is love. The story deals with love in a comical manner complicated by the jealousy of Oberon and Titania , the love potions, and Puck's mistakes. The director could have opted to make the film more dramatic or even more hilarious but, like Shakespeare, he chose light comedy.

Some differences are the setting, the bicycle, the phonograph, and the introduction of a wife for Bottom. The setting is the most noticeable difference. The play is set in ancient Greece while the film is set in Tuscany, Italy around 100. In the original play the characters would wear togas. The attire in the film is appropriate for that time in historylong dresses for the women and suits for the men. Titania and the fairies' costumes have plenty of glitter, and when the fairies disappear, they sparkle like stars. Another obvious difference between the play and film is the use of bicycles for transportation. The bicycle was a new invention in the late 1800's and allowed the characters to pedal after one another instead of chasing each other on foot as in the play. One of the funniest scenes in the film is when Puck first discovers the bicycle. Although he is frightened, his curiosity gets the best of him. He cautiously beeps the horn, and then decides to take a ride. The sight of Puck riding the bicycle is hilarious. Also, in the play the music for the romantic scene between Titania and Bottom is played using the tongs and the bones. A phonograph, which was invented in the 1870's, was used in the film. Additionally, Bottom has a wife in the adaptation. She appears to be very controlling, which makes his affair with Titania seem less immoral to the audience.

As a means of preserving the integrity of the play, the director felt it was important not to stray from the main characters and much of the original dialogue. On the other hand, the change of setting is highly significant because it modernizes the story and adds a fresh dimension to the material. By using familiar items, such as the bicycle and phonograph, and simplifying the dialogue, the film is easier to understand and more enjoyable than the play. Even when the vocabulary in the film is difficult, it is possible to conclude what is happening just by watching the actors.

To sum up, the adaptation is well done and the changes to the original play are

minor. Shakespeare would be proud.

Im not so good in English, but Im absolutely interested in learning it. The usage of English is very important nowadays. To me, English is a very beautiful language, but unfortunately, the natives [most of them] are not appreciating it. Too much of offensive language has made the language became faul. I hope that in future there will less offensive language used, for the sake of English itself. Im sorry if my essay is ridiculous, but at least, this is the first baby step that I took towards mastering English language. Any motivational or helping hands are definitely needed.

Eventhough that I am not the native speaker, but I am very optimist that one day I will master the English, if I try my best.

My fellow friends always asked, Why you are so interested in English? It is not your native tongue,

The answer is very simple, It is because English is used in so many fields of knowledges. I learn English so that I can master the knowledges, same as what they did during Renaissancce. ( They learned Arabic to master the knowledges of Greek which are translanted by Arabs.)

Write my Essay on English as the second language

However, it doesnt mean that I will neglect my own language (i.e Malay language). I still love Bahasa Malaysia @ Malay language. It has become the part of me, for I have been using this language since I was born. Moreover it is my nations language. The language that has been used comercially for a very long time ago. I, personally believes that Malay language is the foruth biggest language that is used, worldwide.

Unfortunately, not every people thinks the same way as I do. Some of them really dislike English. Its because of the historical reasons. These people cannot forgive the Englishmen for being such a bad conqueror. whatever it is, for me, there is no reasons for me not to learn English language. Its because in Islam, we are urged to master knowledges, regardless the spiritual or material type of knowledge.

p/s please stop the prejudice on Islam...

Finding affordable malpractice insurance for many doctors is becoming a growing problem in the United States. Malpractice insurers are worried by a rise in malpractice awards by juries in their state. In turn, the insurers raise their premiums to a point where many doctors can’t afford it. Doctors are receiving malpractice bills that are twice as much than they were a couple of years ago. States with highest premiums are Florida, Nevada, and Pennsylvania. This crisis is concentrated in litigious states with generous juries and financially scared insurers. Some doctors try to protect themselves against possible lawsuits by ordering unnecessary tests, but that increases health costs. Approximately twenty states are showing signs of this crisis, twenty-four states are showing early symptoms of this crisis, and the rest are ok for now.

If this crisis gets worse, it could ultimately affect everybody because anybody could lose their doctor to this malpractice crisis. This crisis is concentrated only in certain states and certain specialties, but the problem is spreading. This situation forces many doctors to move to states where the premiums are more affordable, switch to more safer practices like dermatology and ophthalmology, or take the risk of practicing without insurance. Some veteran practitioners are just quitting altogether. As a result of losing their doctor to this crisis, many people are driving longer distances for a specific practice.

This problem definitely needs to be corrected, but there is no quick and easy solution available. Doctors feel that the main problems are judgments awarded for tragic but sometimes unavoidable outcomes. The insurers blame rate hike and policy cancellations on what they describe as a rising tide of lawsuits and one million dollar plus jury awards. Both doctors and patients are seeking malpractice reform from politicians. Many insurers and doctors feel that one solution to the crisis would be to put caps of $50,000 on non-economic damages awarded to pain and suffering. Republicans, whose campaigns are supported by doctors and insurance firms, endorse such legislation, and the House of Representatives has passed a bill along those lines. But plaintiff’s lawyers, who contribute heavily to the campaigns of Democrats, are lobbying their friends in the senate and reform may remain more of a rallying cry than a real prospect. Twice in the past two decades, Illinois state legislature has passed caps on non-economic jury awards only to have them struck down as unconstitutional by the state supreme court.

Critics blame the insurers rushing to make up for their losses in under priced premiums and poorly performing investments. An independent study by Weiss ratings shows that states with caps on malpractice damages have not enjoyed much relief in malpractice insurance premiums, but have instead seen insurers shore up profits.

Physicians deserve part of the blame too. â€Doctors,” says one doctor, â€haven’t sold themselves as a self policing group.” The vast majority of conscientious physicians have been forced to subsidize the higher insurance costs of a few incompetents. While the vast majority of doctors perform with care and lose few, if any, legal judgments or settlements, a small number of negligent or incompetent doctors endanger patients and drive up malpractice insurance costs for everyone. Doctors and hospitals too often fail to discipline repeat offenders. Hospitals are required to report to their state medical board any revocation, suspension or restriction of a doctors clinical privileges for more than thirty days. Hospitals face many incentives not to report a disciplined doctor and not to discipline him at all. A hospital may want to limit its liability by not airing the problem. Or it may be afraid of a legal battle with the physician.

American health care is getting out of control and the malpractice insurance issue is a mess. Reform is going nowhere. How do we fix all this? Caps on damages would limit non-economic jury awards for such injuries as pain and suffering. But Democrats, backed by trial lawyers, are blocking passage in the senate, claiming it would adversely affect victims who don’t work. Limiting lawyer fees would cap how much of a settlement or jury verdict attorneys can collect. Such a restriction would deter frivolous suits. Medical screening would raise the bar for gaining approval to go forward with a suit. Physicians say better screening would help weed out bogus claims. Whistle blowing would make it easier for a doctor to report a colleagues malpractice, but because they fear being sued or scrutinized themselves, many doctors are unwilling to speak up. Medical standards would measure a doctor’s performance against a statistical norm. This could rationalize malpractice premiums, which are based on a doctor’s specialty and location rather than objectively on performance.

In â€The Doctor Won’t See You Now.” Eisenberg, Daniel, et al. Time, 00 (pg. 46) writes about how this crisis is a problem for physicians and more of a problem for patients who search distances to find a new doctor. The crisis is just disrupting lives of many doctors and patients. This malpractice issue is a complex one as you try to analyze it. The crisis has not yet hit California, however, we all need to be aware that it is spreading and it affects everybody. Hopefully for everybody’s sake, a solution will come in the near future.

Acidic Destruction

Sitting in your room late at night, you listen to the gentle pitter-patter of the rain on your window. It is so soothing and relaxing. Have you ever wondered what the rain is really made of? Is that simply water or is it acid slowly streaming down out there? That rain you hear might be acid rain, which is caused by sulfur-dioxide emissions and shown to be harmful to plants, animals, humans, and even buildings and structures.

The commonly used terms "acid rain" and "acid precipitation" describe specific forms of a type of pollution described generally as "acid deposition." Harmful gases that rise into the air mix with cloud moisture, sunlight, and oxidants. There they chemically combine into dilute sulfuric and nitric acids, which fall back to the earth. This is acid deposition. The major contributing pollutants are sulfur dioxide and nitrogen oxide (Morgan, 5).

"Acid rain" is basically rainwater with a pH level lower than 5.6 (Morgan, ). The term pH means "potential hydrogen". When a substance has a pH level of 7, it is completely neutral with the same number of hydroxyl and hydrogen ions (Pringle, 6). Acidity in the atmosphere can be changed by many natural things. When a volcano erupts, sulfur dioxide is spewed out. Droughts produce unusually dry soil conditions allowing dust particles to be carried upward into the air, neutralizing the acids that may be present at the time (Pringle, 4). Acid rain can come in concentrations sometimes more acidic than lemon juice. These pollutants reach the earth in rain, snow, hail, sleet, or fog. The rain at the beginning of a shower is usually more acidic than the rain that follows. Dry acidic particles can also fall from the atmosphere. Because wind can carry gases and moisture for hundreds of miles, even areas far away from the source bear the effects of acid deposition (Durham, 10). There are of course, many things that we as humans do everyday to promote and support the continuation of acid rain.

When the fossil fuel, coal, is used, the sulfur in it mixes with oxygen in the air to form sulfur dioxide. The sulfur dioxide is eventually turned into acid over a matter of days. Coal-fired power plants are the single greatest cause of acid rain in the United States. They account for two-thirds of all sulfur dioxide emissions in the US (Pringle 16; Morgan 75). In the mid-180's, the United States alone discharged about 6 million tons of sulfur dioxide (Bennet). For decades, the highest source for sulfur dioxide emissions was the huge Inco, Ltd., a copper and nickel smelter in Sudbury Ontario. Each year the Sudbury plant gave off 1% of the entire world's sulfur dioxide emissions, including both natural and human sources (Morgan, 4).

At a staggering 1,50 ft, Superstack is almost as tall as the Empire State Building. Its main purpose was to act as a giant chimney to take all toxins higher into the atmosphere so that we humans would not have to breathe them. The air quality around the smelter was much better and plant life started growing back. The problem was, the sulfur dioxide was then blown whichever the winds happened to be going. Most of the time those winds to the sulfur dioxide across state borders and into Canada (Morgan, 7) Scientists then used satellite photography to trace the weather patterns back to where the sulfur dioxide originated. The acid falling back down to earth, whether it is in dry or wet form has drastic consequences for many.

One example is when a rainstorm occurs in a forest. The summer rains wash the leaves of the branches and fall to the forest floor below. Some of the water is absorbed into the soil while other water run-off enters nearby streams, rivers, or lakes. When acid rain is absorbed into the ground, it slowly poisons the tree by being absorbed through the roots. Acidic rainwater also dissolves the nutrients and minerals that the plants need from the soil. When acid rain is frequent, leaves tend to lose their protective, waxy coating. After a leaf loses it's coating, it becomes more susceptible to diseases. By damaging the leaves, the plant can not produce enough food energy for it to remain healthy. Trees no longer grow as fast as they did before. Leaves and pines needles turn brown and fall off when they are supposed to be green in color (Phamornsuwana).

Not only are plants affected by acid rain, but animals are as well. Animals in an aquatic biome suffer more extreme consequences than that of any other biome. The simplest way to show the amount of damage would be in the following record/chart. Diary of Death for aquatic life

pH 6.5 The growth rate of brook trout slows and lake trout begin to have trouble reproducing. Clams and snails become scarce. Acid-tolerant organisms, such as certain rotifers and filamentous green algae, start to increase.

pH 6 Brook and rainbow trout populations start to decline. Smallmouth bass and spotted salamanders have trouble reproducing, as do several kinds of mayflies. Several species of clams and snails are wiped out.

pH 5.8 Tiny crustaceans called copepods die out, and some kinds of crayfish have trouble re-growing their hard exoskeletons after they molt.

pH 5.5 Rainbow trout and some smallmouth bass population are becoming extinct. Other trout, shiners, walleyes pike, and roach fail to reproduce and their numbers drop. Leeches and mayfly larvae disappear.

pH 5.4 The reproduction of most crayfish is impaired.

pH 5 All but one species of crayfish are dead. As are the brook trout, walleyed pike, and bullfrogs. Thick mats of green and blue-green algae cover the lake bottom. Some insects in crease because few fish are left to prey on them or because they live on the water surface. These include water boatmen and water striders.

pH 4.8 The number of leopard frogs declines, along with populations of rooted underwater pondweeds.

pH 4.5 Mayflies and stoneflies have all died out.

pH 4. Pumpkinseed sunfish population declines and northern pike have completely disappeared.

pH 4. The common toad dies out. It lives on land but must lay its eggs in ponds and lakes.

pH 4 The spring peeper, another amphibian the produces in ponds and marshes begins to die out. All aquatic plants except those that are acid tolerant are dead or in decline.

pH .5 Virtually all clams, snails, frogs, fish, and crayfish are missing from these acidic waters.

pH .5 Only a few species of acid-tolerant midges and some algae and fungi are alive.

pH The water is remarkably clear, but this in not a healthy clarity. The water is virtually sterile (Bennet).

The waters of tens of thousands of Scandinavian lakes are now unnaturally clear due to acid rain. Hundreds of lakes in New York's Adirondack Mountains are sterile as well. Most lakes and streams have a pH level between 6 and 8. Some lakes are naturally acidic even without the effects of acid rain. For example, Little Echo Pond in New York has a pH level of 4.. Acid rain can enter a lake or pond by many different methods (Durham, 8). Dry particles can come down out of the atmosphere and settle into a lake or pond. Precipitation is another common method as well as drainage from a sewer system. Probably the most drastic method by far would have to be spring acid shock. When acid snow melts in the spring, the acids in the snow seep into the ground. Some of the snow runs off the ground and into lakes (Phamornsuwana). A sudden dose of acids can have long-lasting effects on a lake or pond.

Acid rain does not only damage the natural ecosystems, but also man-made materials and structures. Marble, limestone, and sandstone can easily be dissolved by acid rain. Metals, paints, textiles, and ceramic can effortlessly be corroded. Acid rain can downgrade leather and rubber. Man-made materials slowly deteriorate even when exposed to unpolluted rain, but acid rain helps speed up the process (Morgan, 7). Acid rain causes carvings and monuments in stones to lose their features. It is known to dramatically accelerate the deterioration of buildings, including landmarks such as the Acropolis in Athens, the Taj Mahal in India, and the Statue of Liberty in New York City (Phamornsuwana). The repairs on building and monuments can be quite costly. In Westminster, England, up to ten million pounds was spent necessitated on repairs damaged by acid rain. In 10, the United States spent thirty-five billion dollars on paint damage. In 185, the Cologne Cathedral cost the Germans approximately twenty million dollars in repairs. In Italy, the repairs on the Roman monuments cost about two hundred million dollars (Durham, 111).

Most importantly, acid rain can affect the health of a human being. It can harm us through the atmosphere or through the soil from which our food is grown and eaten from. These foods that are consumed could cause nerve damage to children, severe brain damage, or even death (Phamornsuwana). One of the serious side effects of acid rain on humans is a respiratory problem. The sulfur dioxide and nitrogen oxide emission gives risk to respiratory problems such as dry coughs, asthma, headaches, eye, nose, and throat irritation (Pringle, 64). Polluted rainfall is especially harmful for people who suffer from asthma for people who have hard time breathing. But even healthy people can have their lungs damaged by acid air pollutants. Acid rain can aggravate a persons ability to breathe and may increase disease, which could lead to death (Bennet).

Acid rain is proven to be extremely harmful to the environment, buildings, and human life. Acid rain is made when sulfur dioxides mix with nitrogen oxides to form acids. The acids then can come back down out of the atmosphere in either a dry or a wet form. Both of these have proven devastating to both aquatic animals and forests. Billions of dollars have been spent to correct and try to fix what acid rain had done to buildings and monuments. Even more disturbing, acid rain also has a very serious effect on the health of humans. The causes of acid rain are clear, and although we, as citizens, may not be able to directly control the harmful emissions produced by power plants, we have to do what little we can to save the environment, and ourselves. So walk or ride a bike every once in awhile, but more importantly, write a letter to the government or get involved in research to find new ways of operating those coal-fired power plants.

The people of Thebes say "Destiny guide me always"(55) at one point in the play, Oedipus, which leads one to wonder why a servant would attempt to defy fate, making a grave mistake leading to an even more devastating ending for the one he chose to save. Although ordered by his queen to leave baby Oedipus in the woods to die, the servant shows responsiveness and a belief in the interconnection among people by giving the baby to a friend to take care of him.

The servant was not bought, but born and raised in the palace of Thebes. After he lied to the queen about his actions he was promoted to bodyguard. He lies again to the queen about the murderer of her husband later in the story and is again rewarded by being able to retire as a shepard in the mountains. He's known as "a trusty servant, if there ever was one" (14), but shows no guilt for his actions. If only the queen knew the deceit he used, she might not see him as such a trusting servant but a puppet master for tragedy. Sophocles makes the shepard a bad guy in the play, even though his pity seems noble, because Greek culture praises responsibility not responsiveness. Greek culture would want him to be always loyal to his master. He knew of the prophecy that Oedipus would kill his father and marry his mother. Therefore he betrays not only his queen but also Apollo, a god of divinity, by giving in to his pity.

Responsive would be defined as sensitive and quick to respond. These are the exact characteristics shown by the servant when given the baby. He "pitied the little baby" (10) and in turn "saved him for this, this fate" (104). Being brought up in the palace he should have all the more reason to have abandoned Oedipus. It should be fair to say he was feeling very sensitive that day. He did not take care of the baby himself, though, but rushed to give him to a fellow shepard, not really sure of what would come of him. He was quick to respond failing to make a sure decision on what would come of the baby but let his emotions control him. A responsible person would have fulfilled his obligations.

A responsible person would also have been trustworthy and reliable. Responsibility is being able to be called upon to answer for his acts or decisions. Oedipus calls upon the older servant after the little baby had become king. Oedipus asked him for the truth only to find resistance. The shepard tried to avoid the question until he is physically threatened. He tried to avoid the responsibility.

He portrayed his world as one and could not bear to harm an innocent baby no matter what his better intuition told him. He felt the interconnectedness between humans. He felt his actions, or lack of, would have a direct and negative affect. He chose guilt over regret.

Some might say he acted responsible because he showed integrity. He followed his code of values by not letting someone die. The servant was raised in the palace, though. One's values come from his environment and how he is raised. It can't be denied that his code of values lay closely with his master, queen, and his home. He acted against his values but with his emotions.

So the fate of the great man, Oedipus, the seeker of truth, solver of the Sphinx's riddle, is settled by a man who didn't tell the truth until he was forced to. A man who gave in to his emotions. A man who acted in a completely responsive way against his better knowledge, his master, and his culture. A man who in no doubt wished to Apollo that he had died that day with Oedipus.

Early Country Early commercial country music was a direct descendant of the ballad and folk tradition brought to the American South by immigrants from the British Isles in the 18th and 1th centuries. When not carrying on the oral tradition of storytelling through song, old-time country music featured instrumentals with the fiddle usually taking the melodic role of the voice. Fiddlin John Carson combined the two traditions by singing and playing simultaneously on a 1 two-song 78, considered to be the first country music hit record.

The most important group of this era was undoubtedly The Carter Family -- their importance to the growth of country music cannot be overstated. The ultimate preservationists of the Southern folk tradition, the Carters are considered The First Family of Country Music; their song Will the Circle Be Unbroken is one of the great standards of country music as is Wildwood Flower, which first introduced Maybelle Carters influential guitar style. The Stone-man Family of Galax, Virginia were also forerunners in mountain music.

Jimmie Rodgers, The Father of Country Music (aka The Singing Brakeman/Americas Blue Yodeler) brought country music to a new level of acceptance and was one of the most influential singers in the annals of popular music. His unique vocal delivery and down-home lyrics catapulted him to national prominence and brought a new-found legitimacy to country music. An absolute original, his singing and writing style sounds as timely today as it did during his short recording career (17-).

Cowboy Cowboy music capitalized on Americas fascination with the Wild West, exploiting it both on record and in Hollywood films. The hillbillies were now transformed into dashing young cowboys and cowgirls singing songs of romance and the range.

Portraying an essentially romantic vision of the lonesome prairie, the movies routinely featured a free-spirited cowboy singing around the campfire after a hard days work of shoot-em-ups and chasing down runaway coaches. This cleaning up of the country image as exemplified by Gene Autry, Roy Rogers and The Sons of the Pioneers helped to increase countrys popularity.

Western swing A Depression-era music born in the dusty dance halls of Texas and Oklahoma, western swing married the sensibility of country to the sophisticated rhythms of jazz. Using something closer to a Big Band lineup (often including horns) than a traditional country configuration, Bob Wills soon became the undisputed king of the genre.

With his band The Texas Playboys, Wills was a true innovator who took great pride in honing his bands improvisational skills. His ability to get the best out of his players on any given night had a profound effect on the direction of country music. Other western swing bands include one of the founders of the genre, Milton Brown (and his Musical Brownies) and Spade Cooley. Today, bands like Asleep at the Wheel carry on this musical tradition.

Bluegrass An intricate, purely acoustic music which is easily identified by its two and three-part vocal harmonies, energetic drive and unbridled emotion. This high, lonesome sound grew out of the string-band movement of the late 10s and takes its name from its creator, Bill Monroe, who dubbed his band the Blue Grass Boys.

Former Bluegrass Boys Flatt & Scruggs theme songs for Bonnie & Clyde and The Beverly Hillbillies introduced bluegrass to a whole new audience in the 60s. Today, bluegrass remains highly influential, as evidenced by artists like Alison Krauss.

Honky-tonk A free-wheeling, often boisterous style of music spawned in the Southern bars (aka honky-tonks) of post-WWII. By the late 140s the venue for country music had shifted from social gatherings to watering holes where performers no longer had to worry about keeping up appearances or espousing family values in their songs. As a result, lyrics soon began to reflect the hard, cold facts of modern blue-collar life.

Hank Williams and his songs of cheatin women and ramblin men turned honky-tonk into the prevailing voice of country in the late 140s and early 50s. He lived it like he sang it, however, and his excessive lifestyle would eventually lead to his untimely death at .

Rockabilly In the Memphis of 15, race lines were sharply divided -- most blacks listened to rhythm and blues (aka race music) while country was the music favored by most white people. Looking for a way to sell R&B to a white audience, producer Sam Phillips lamented that his Sun Records would make a fortune if only he could find a white boy who could sing colored. Enter Elvis Aron Presley.

By putting a backbeat under Bill Monroes Blue Moon of Kentucky and combining it with Elvis Presleys breakthrough vocal style, producer Sam Phillips created the hybrid that would come to be known as rockabilly. Though its popularity barely made it through the 50s, artists as diverse as Johnny Cash, Jerry Lee Lewis and Carl Perkins all began their recording careers in the genre.

All country music stiles!

Lord of the Flies ~ Essay

L.J.L

Fear is oxygen for motivation. In 'Lord of the Flies', by William Golding, fear plays a huge part in how the boys react to being stranded on the island. Every action is controlled by fear; although the boys try to conquer their fears, it is impossible to do, because if they were to succeed they would feel no reason to survive or live.

Fears differ from person to person, because of this tension rises between Ralph and Jack. They have differing opinions on what is important due to their fears. Ralph's biggest fear is that they will never be rescued, where as Jack's biggest fear is that they will be unable to kill a pig for meat. "You let the fire go out."… '[Jack] noticed Ralph's scarred nakedness, and the sombre silence of all four of them. He sought charitable in his happiness, to include them in the thing that had happened. His mind was crowded with memories; memories of the knowledge that had come to them when they closed in on the struggling pig, knowledge that they had outwitted a living thing, imposed their will upon it, taken away it's life like a long satisfying drink.' (page 70, 'Lord of the Flies') Ralph wasn't interested in the hunt; he wanted to build shelters, to survive the elements, and keep a smoky fire going, so they might be rescued. Jack wants meat, to do as he pleases, and power. Jack fears failure, this shows in his determination to be a successful hunter. It also shows in his defiance of Ralph's authority. He is so afraid of failure that he won't stop trying to undermine him until he gets what he wants to be chief. "See? See?…There isn't a tribe for you anymore! The conch is gone-…I'm chief!" (page 181, 'Lord of the Flies') Jack believes that if he is not in power, he is a failure.

Order custom research paper on Lord of the Flies

When we are afraid, we feel safer if we have power, or if someone makes us believe that we have power. Ralph's democratic government falls apart by the end of the book, "There was no Piggy to talk sense. There was no solemn assembly for debate nor dignity of the conch." (page 16, 'Lord of the Flies') this is because the boys have given up hope on being rescued. Their only hope now is to find a way to survive long-term on the island. They fear that Ralph won't be able to help them in this area. Jack understands human nature, the need for safety, and the want of power. He is able to convince people to break Ralph's rules, and that he is a better leader then Ralph. Jack makes the boys that follow him believe that they have power by offering them freedom from rules. Also, because the new "tribe" has so much power on the island, they are fearless.

Fear is also used to control people. They use fear to make rules, and power to make people fear. Jack's tribe used power to inflict fear upon Ralph. As they searched the island for him they would keep on letting out loud howls. He could hear them getting closer and closer, as they hunted him. "He forgot his wounds, his hunger and thirst, and became fear; hopeless fear on flying feet…" (page 00, 'Lord of the Flies'). The new chief hunted Ralph because he thought he might regain power again, he was able to make his tribe follow him by telling them that Ralph was dangerous. They were able to control Ralph, (to make him run and hide), and Samneric, (to make them join the tribe), by taking away their power. The boys follow Roger and Jack's idea of hunting down Ralph because they worry that there is the chance that Ralph was right about the fire, and the shelters, but with him dead there is no need to worry.

In the end every movement is done out of fear. Whether it was hunting or keeping a fire going, to stealing and murder. 'Lord of the Flies' would have had no driving force had fear not played such a large role in the plot.

Beowulf

Beowulf is a link between two traditions, the Pagan and the Christian. The virtues of courage in war and the acceptance of feuds between men and countries as a fact of life stems from the older Pagan tradition, and on the other hand Christianitys moralities are based on meekness and poverty. Beowulf brings these two convictions together through the actions of the characters. As a result, the Beowulf poet is at pains to resolve his Christian beliefs with the often quite un-Christian behavior of his characters. This tension leads to frequent asides about God, hell, and heavenand to many allusions to the Old Testament throughout the work.

Even though Beowulf possesses spiritual strength, he isnt particularly concerned with the Christian virtues. He wants to help people, in a Christian way, but his motivation for doing so is complicated. Beowulf has an eagerness for material rewards and earthly fame which is a characteristic of Paganism, but at the same time Beowulf has the heart of a Christian to help people but wants the selfish rewards of Paganism. Though some of Beowulfs valuessuch as his dedication to his people and his willingness to dole out treasureconceivably overlap with Christian values, he ultimately lives for the preservation of earthly glory after death, not for entrance into heaven. Though his death in the encounter with the dragon clearly proves his mortality, the poem itself stands as a testament to the raw greatness of his life, ensuring his ascension into the secular heaven of warrior legend.

Beowulf is an epic poem that combines the contrasting beliefs of the traditional Paganism and the modern assessment of Christianity. Even though Beowulf doesnt lead a particularly good life by Christian standards, but the poet cannot help but to revere him. The influence of Christianity was just beginning to make its mark in this world, and most of the characters are torn between their newly discovered religious feelings and their old, heathen way of perceiving things. The idea that theres a higher being that controls ones actions revolutionized peoples concepts of themselves, and infused their day-to-day lives with a sense of wonder.

The tropical rainforests are falling at human hands. The world's oldest living ecosystem is under threat in our conquest for farmland, timber, minerals, and other resources (Grainger 17). These forests cover % of the Earth's surface, or 6% of its landmass, yet they house over half the plant and animal species on Earth ("Rainforests"). Rainforests originally covered twice that area. Deforestation is occurring on such a scale that if it were to continue "at present rates the forests could disappear within the next one to two hundred years" (Grainger 17).

Why should we be concerned? Deforestation poses a threat to the rich biological diversity of tropical rainforests, hinders the advancement of medicinal discoveries, and contributes largely to the greenhouse effect. Because if the forests go, then so will many of the species that they support. This greatly reduces the biological diversity of the whole planet. Secondly, deforestation curtails "our future options to exploit other plants for medicines," (Grainger 17). Finally, it will contribute to the impending global climate change through the greenhouse effect (Grainger 18). For these reasons it is imperative to control deforestation so that a large area of tropical rainforest will remain.

Tropical rainforests are defined by two primary factors location (in the tropics) and amount of rainfall they receive ("Rainforests"). Rainforests receive from 4 to 8 meters of rain a year ("Rainforests"). Most of the rainfall is blocked by the heavy vegetation, and water reaches the forest floor by rolling down branches and trunks. Another distinctive characteristic is that the rainforests have no "seasonality"no dry or cold season of slower growth ("Rainforests"). In addition, they are the Earth's oldest living ecosystems. The Rainforests are a "priceless part of our natural heritage" and their removal through deforestation would mean the loss of one of the planet's most valuable ecosystems (Grainger 146).

Rainforests are being destroyed at an astounding rate. According to the National Academy of Science, at least 50 million acres a year are lost, "an area the size of England, Wales, and Scotland combined," ("Rainforests"). "All the primary rainforests in India, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka and Haiti have been destroyed already" ("Rainforests"). In addition, the rainforests of the Ivory Coast have almost been completely logged. Areas such as the Philippines and Thailand lost over 50% of their rainforests by 185 ("Rainforests"). These statistics prove that there is no more powerful reason for wanting to preserve the tropical rainforests.

Write your Deforestation research paper

Biological diversity, often shortened to "biodiversity," has three main components ecosystem diversity, species diversity, and genetic diversity. So the biodiversity of a given area is characterized by the presence of different kinds of ecosystems; its species diversity; and its contribution to the genetic diversity of particular species (Grainger 147). According to the National Academy of Sciences, a typical four square mile patch of rainforest contains as many as 1500 species of flowering plants, 750 species of trees, 15 mammal species, 400 species of birds, 100 of reptiles, 60 of amphibians, and 150 species of butterflies ("Rainforests"). In particular, deforestation threatens to reduce these numbers of species, degrade the genetic diversity of individual species, and hinder the survival rate of species already exploited in their wild form in the forests.

Major consequences arise for plant and animal species as a result of deforestation. All forms of disturbance displace animals from part or all of their territories. The more extensive the disturbance, the more likely animals in an area will become overcrowded and their populations will decline due to social pressures, limitations on food, and impaired reproductive activity (Grainger 150). Even by just removing a few plants, the complex annual calendars of food sources could be disrupted. These annual food source schedules enable many rainforest animals, like the orangutan, to cope with the "low density and irregular flowering and fruiting regimes of the plants they eat" (Grainger 150). Moreover, other plants may be affected "if animals on which they rely for pollination or dispersal leave to search for food elsewhere" (150).

Furthermore, genetic diversity of individual species is also being degraded. This is a concern to plant breeders because several of these species are commercially valuable crops (Grainger 147). Their degradation will "threaten our ability to continue breeding new varieties to keep ahead of pests and diseases that threaten products." Several key economic crops that originate in the humid tropics and still grow there today are brazil nut, cashew nut, cocoa, passion fruit, pineapple, rubber, papaya, bamboo, banana, ginger, rice and yam (Grainger 15). Crops that grow on the outskirts of the forests have been bred from wild plants to give the best yields under particular environmental conditions. Extracts from the wild plants have been taken in order to make use of specific genetic characteristics from the entire population. "It is vital to retain a wide genetic diversity of wild plants so that plant breeders can counter threats to crop productivity caused by new pests and diseases and changing climate." For example, in the Amazon huge sums of money are spent in breeding new groundnut varieties resistant to diseases such as leafspot (Caufield). Also, some high yielding rice varieties last only two years before being attacked by a new insect pest and needing replacement (Grainger 15).

Deforestation is increasing the rate of species extinction so that the plants we are using will disappear along with many animals also. "Extinction is an irreversible change and once a species is gone it is lost for good" (Grainger 150). It occurs naturally at a rate of about one species every two years (150). Species are put at much risk early on when their numbers drop so low that they could be eliminated by drought, disease or other random events. There are many endangered species found in the tropical rainforests that risk extinction if the present conditions continue. Some examples are the koupray or wild cow of Southeast Asia, of which only 100 individuals remain, the broad-nosed lemur from Madagascar, which is down to just two colonies, and the southern bearded saki, a monkey living in the forests of the northeast Amazonia (150).

Many medical advances have come from the abundant botanical resources of the tropical rainforests. Half of the Earth's plant species live there and only 1% have been thoroughly examined for medicinal potentials ("Rainforests"). Extracts from organisms are used directly as drugs for many maladies ranging from headaches to lethal diseases such as malaria. An aid in the cure of malaria, quinine, is an alkaloid extracted from the bark of the cinchona tree found in Latin America and Africa ("Rainforests"). Also, the alkaloid d-turbocuarine found in the "deadly poisonous bark of curare lianas is used to treat diseases such as multiple sclerosis, Parkinson's disease, and other muscular disorders." Lastly, two important anti-tumor agents are found in periwinkle from Madagascar. "One provides for a % chance of remission in cases of lymphatic leukemia. The other offers a life remission in 58% of Hodgkin's Disease sufferers."

In addition, chemical structures from organisms serve as templates for which scientists can chemically synthesize drug compounds. Approximately 7,000 medical compounds prescribed by Western doctors are derived from plants that reside in the rainforests ("Rainforests"). The blueprint for aspirin is found in extracts from willow trees in the rainforest for example. And ninety percent of prescription drugs that are based on higher plants from the rainforest include direct extractions from those plants ("Rainforests").

Finally, the plants of the rainforest provide aids for research. Some plants provide testing agents for potentially harmful food or drug products while other plant compounds allow scientists to understand how cancer cells grow ("Rainforests"). Also, tropical forests "offer hope to safer contraceptives." "Approximately 4,000 plant species have been shown to offer contraceptive possibilities." This is a notable fact since the exponential growth of the world's population is in need of more effective birth control methods.

Deforestation also contributes significantly to the greenhouse effect and global warming. The greenhouse effect describes how Earth's atmosphere functions. To begin, the sun emits short wave radiation through the atmosphere to the Earth. In return, the Earth radiates some of the sun's energy back into the atmosphere in the form of long-wave infrared radiation. Certain trace gases such as carbon dioxide, methane, ozone, and nitrous oxide retain heat by trapping some of the infrared radiation. Without these "greenhouse gases" the Earth would be C cooler than it is now ("Rainforests"). Clearing and burning rainforests releases considerable amounts of greenhouse gases into the atmosphere. "Each year, deforestation contributes -0 percent of all carbon dioxide in the atmosphere" ("Rainforests"). Deforestation is also responsible for destroying our means of absorbing and storing the substance. This leads to global warming because the Earth has lost one of its only ways to absorb excess atmospheric carbon. Through photosynthesis the rainforests absorb the carbon dioxide and emit oxygen. Yet, with deforestation there is "more and more carbon released into the atmosphere" due to the burning of the plants, and "less and less forests to remove the carbon from the atmosphere" ("Rainforests").

Rapid warming of the atmosphere can have tremendous consequences. First, many species will not be able to survive the climate change or may not be able to continue life in another habitat. Secondly, the sea level will rise approximately 1.5 meters which will cause coastal flooding ("Rainforests"). Also, an impact can occur on agriculture in food exporting nations such as the United States, Canada and France as a result of drought and drier soil conditions ("Rainforests"). And lastly, there will be increases in severe storms such as hurricanes, cyclones, and typhoons ("Rainforests").

Tropical deforestation has many significant environmental impacts. It threatens the biodiversity of our planet, deters medicinal discoveries plant species may offer and contributes to potential global warming resulting from the greenhouse effect. In conclusion, conservation of the tropical rainforests is imperative in order to preserve one of the Earth's oldest, most rich and valuable ecosystems

The search for personal identity is a fundamental behavior for people who live in a society no mater how hard it is. The self-realization is generally composed of many aspects such as culture, gender and age. In ¡°Naming Myself¡± by Barara Kingsolver, this theme is central to the topic; in the short story ¡°The Chrysanthemums¡± by John Steinbeck, the protagonist tries to find a sense beyond her true self likwise. Also, Al Purdy of ¡° The Iron Road¡±, which is not preoccupied with this concept, eventually liberates and reaches his self-realization.

The poem ¡° Naming Myself¡± reveals that the awareness of one¡¯s racial identity is important for people. In the poem, the narrator is an one-quarter Chevokee. Her ¡°restless¡± grandfather fled from his comfortable life to marry her grandmother--a Chevokee woman. He probably feels his life is boring and is curious about Chevokee culture. Although he is forgiven for stealing a horse by his family, he losses his family name because of his marriage. He makes up the name which the narrator guards. Once the narrator could change her name, but she did not do it and keeps it firmly because she is worried about losing his ¡°soul¡± ¨Cher identity and also becomes ¡° restless¡± just like her grandfather. Obviously she is wise; otherwise she may be suffering between two cultures.

In contrast, Elsia in the short story ¡°The Chrysanthemums¡± is not so lucky. She is eager to find her own self beyond his female¡¯s role, so she fails. In this story, Elsia is a mid-aged who has a neat house and a lovely husband. She also is good at gardening. She grows some flourishing chrysanthemums that represent her beauty and his value. When the tinker asks for her flowers, she gives him a pot of chrysanthemum spouts with great joy and even makes up some work to reward him. She seems to find her own value. But unfortunately, when she sees his beloved chrysanthemums are discarded on the road, she truly recognizes that she can never fulfill her wish to be more than what she is already, a housewife. Her silent cry at the end of the story expresses her sadness and helplessness of being a female in society.

Furthermore, the young boy in the memoir ¡°The Iran Road¡± also gives a positive example of the construction of individual identity. He is seventeen years old when he has nothing to do after having quit from school in the Great Depression. He grows boredom and wants to adventure. Thus, he boards a train heading to western of Canada as a green hand bum. He confronts a lot of things such as crouching in a coal gondola in the rain, starving without a sandwich for two hundred miles, being lost in the woods. But he also learns how to board a train, to overcome his embarrassment for a hand out and to take care of himself. What he has encountered gradually enriches his knowledge and opens his horizon. Finally when he almost reaches Vancouver, for the first time he realizes how big this country is and feels a sense of exaltation not only for the sight, but also for strongly awareness of his ability. ¡°How marvelous to be alive and to ride a bare-backed train through such a country.¡± He seems to find his own identity. His physical and psychological maturation makes him ready to face with his coming adult life. The iron road has forged his own identity.

In conclusion, the quest for one¡¯s identity is a predominant activity in one¡¯s life. The pomes ¡°Naming Myself¡±, the story ¡°The Chrysanthemums¡± and the memoir ¡°The Iron Road¡± are the articles that effectively illustrate some aspects of this idea such as ethnic, feminist and age factors. People should be always aware of their identities in order to have better lives.

1. Reading, Writing, & Thinking

I can significantly see a progression in my writing and reading skills from my first journal to my last. By reading the assigned selections, I feel like I can evaluate readings better and come up with my own conclusions. Because the journal questions were more opinion-based, this allowed me to read the selections, try to analyze them, and then come to a sound conclusion based on supporting evidence.

The Comm. Ancients section of the course was a little difficult for me because philosophy has never been a strong point of mine. Although I was uninterested in the material and found it difficult to grasp, I still think it is a necessary entity of the course. It allows you to progress through history and apply communication to ithence, the title of the course. After reading Cicero, Gorgias, Aristotle, and Plato, I feel like I can understand the concept of rhetoric better and can more importantly, read and write about it easier.

. Media

The discussions and focus on media throughout the course was very interesting to me. Because we live in a media-rich society, it is important to discuss this powerful force and try to analyze it the best we could. I only missed one or two classes I think mostly because class time was used effectively. The lectures, audio and visual clips, and presentations were very informative. I am glad the course is not centered on memorization because I don't have to sit and write the power point slides down word-for-word in my notebook. I can listen to what the professor has to say and apply it to my field of interest or the present day.

I think my appreciation for TV news has decreased since the start of the course. Almost every journalism and communication course I have had at Duquesne has stressed the importance of newspapers and their ability to cover the whole story and offer a wide variety of opinions, whereas television can only show you a minute and a half package of something. I'm beginning to see why this is the case among college professors, but I still keep a sense of awareness for TV news because I know it can dominate public opinion, and it is the way most Americans still get their news.

. Skills

I think my skills have most definitely increased since the beginning of the course. All the entities of communication (reading, writing, speaking, reasoning) are tied in a direct relationship so when one increases, the rest tend to follow. Because I can read and understand what I'm reading more effectively, I can express my feelings in writing better and I can speak with more confidence.

I have learned that it is often how you say things, not what you say. I can take this into account because to speak with confidence and "eloquence" allows others to look at you as if you really knew what you were talking about. I think you still need to have some substance behind what you say, but the better speaker will always have the upper hand because he knows what his audience wants to hear and can tell it to them easier.

4. Self-Analysis

One thing I would change about the way I handled the course would be to get things done earlier. The journals were often a burden on Sunday afternoon because I would rush to get what I had all week to get done in one day. If you take one or two readings a day then it can make things a lot easier on yourself. This would also have given me better understandings of the readings.

I would also have not put the World War II project off for as long as I did. I wasn't sure the significance of the assignment of how it applied to communications, but sometimes you have to do what is assigned even if you don't like it. After I took the time to do a little research and write a paper I was glad I did because I know a lot more about the war than most of my friends.

It is also important to have good communication with your writing partner. My partner and I are friends and speak in class but we don't take advantage of the opportunity to help each other with our work. Getting advice from a classmate about your WWII project, your journals, or The Screwtape letters, can help out a lot. It is always better to have two opinions than one.

5. Suggestions for Improvement

There aren't any noticeable changes that I can see to help the course significantly. One thing I did enjoy was the class discussions because it allowed for a wide range of people to get their opinion heard. But once they were heard many of them did not face any opposition. Many things we talked about in class were opinion-based so maybe the addition of a small debate fit into the course schedule would be interesting. This would allow writing partners to get into groups and put their opinion to the test against another. It would also force people to apply facts, substance and communication skills to their debate. And once the debate is over, you can see who won by taking a class poll and analyzing what the winning group did. Did they speak eloquently to sway the judges or did they have sound evidence and proof to their opinion?

I enjoyed watching Network because I thought it was a film that really tied in a lot of themes from class. I'm not sure if there are any other films that do the same thing, but maybe adding another one to a journal somewhere or doing one as an extra credit could be interesting. It is always educational and entertaining for a student to get to watch a film and learn something at the same time.

Despite the fact that science played a major role in the last century to help transform our society to a more livable and enjoyable world, few young people showed any kind of interest in pursuing any scientific or technical careers and that even the general public showed an even lower level of involvement in scientific research and studies.

The contras were an American backed rebel association brought in to overthrow the Nicaraguan administration customary of the Sandinistas. Contra strategies incorporated the unsystematic homicide of defenseless villagers in isolated areas. The burning of educational institutions, health centers and residences. They lacked any popular support in their country, but were very well equipped and frequently capable to crush the poorly prepared peoples armed forces of Nicaragua. They were utilized to frighten the local inhabitants into voting for an American supported aspirant in elections. The warning being that if the erroneous individual was voted for, the Contra measures would continue. The warning worked.

Affairs with the United States weakened little by little, particularly subsequent to Ronald Reagan becoming president in 181. His government was strongly anti-Communist and was certain that the Sandinistas were behind rebel armed forces in other Central American countries and were directly connected with Cuba and the USSR. Reagan cut all aid to Nicaragua, forced an monetary embargo, and began supplying funds, weapons, and instruction for an equipped resistance guerrilla force recognized as the contras. These contra army, based in nearby countries, incorporated previous members of Somoza's National Guard as well as additional Nicaraguans discontented with the new administration. Nicaragua, facing contra assaults, began getting military aid from Cuba along with the Soviet Union. The administration suppressed the media, repeatedly imprisoned opposition politicians, and enlarged efforts to enforce a socialist replica on the financial system. Large elements of a private industry division continued, nonetheless, opposition politics were never prohibited.

Elections were held in 184, however the majority opposition parties declined to take part. The Sandinista aspirant, Daniel Ortega Saavedra, won an effortless triumph, furthermore the Sandinistas gained an enormous majority in the new National Assembly. The United States plus a great deal of the opposition resorted to militia to attempt to remove the Sandinistas. Fatalities from the contra war increased, and the danger of war among Nicaragua and Honduras became greater than before. Honduran officials permitted the contras to assault Nicaragua from bases in their countryside, develop their own army, and allowed the United States to carry out armed training and construct airstrips from which to aid the contras. Members of the U.S. Congress who opposed the contra guidelines tried to limit financial support, although they had only partial achievements until 186, once the scandal identified as the Iran-Contra matter exposed that Reagan's government officials had violated U.S. law to obtain support of the contras.

Other countries in the hemisphere attempted to arbitrate the Central American catastrophe. The Contadora grouping of Mexico, Venezuela, Colombia, and Panama began its labors in 18 but failed and had a tiny accomplishment. In 187 Costa Rica's leader, Oscar Arias Sánchez, began an attempt to have Central America's presidents solve their individual problems. In 188, the Sandinistas decided to start discussions in the company of the contras, however combating persistented for quite a few months. Pressures for a negotiated resolution were building. Nicaragua's financial system was devastated by the effects of the fighting and the U.S. prohibition, low prices for exports, and a sequence of natural disasters. Many of the Sandinista administrations monetary policies, which implicated state management of imports and exports, emphasis on agricultural cooperatives, and limitations on private industry, proved ineffective. At its most terrible point, in 188, Nicaragua had the world's highest yearly inflation rate, with estimates ranging from ,000 percent to 6,000 percent. Soviet union aid also decreased in the late 180s, as the Soviet financial system worsened and Communist regimes were defeated in Eastern Europe. At the same time, U.S. labors to come across a negotiated answer in Central America enlarged with the 18 appointment of President George Bush to succeed Reagan.

Near the beginning of 18, Central American leaders approved a plan for disarming the contras, sending out a United Nations peacekeeping operation, and holding internationally supervised appointment in Nicaragua in early 10. Convinced of triumph, the Sandinistas calmed prohibitions on political opponents and permitted a somewhat liberated campaign. Fourteen opposition parties created the National Opposition Union with Violeta Barrios de Chamorro, as their presidential aspirant. Campaigning on a pledge to stop armed recruitment and encourage national reconciliation, Chamorro won a striking triumph with 55 percent of the vote, defeating current president Ortega, the Sandinista aspirant, who acknowledged only 41 percent.

Should Marijuana be legal in the United States?

Marijuana is by far the most commonly used illegal drug in the United States and in most other countries as well. More than seventy million Americans have tried marijuana, and more than twenty million have smoked it in the last year, but does marijuana really affect people and their thinking process, and should pot be legal in the United States. I believe that marijuana should be legal because people should live life how they want, even though it could lead to harm.

Marijuana hit the united states big in the 60's and 70's. Through this time period many people thought this drug was harmless. Today we know that pot is much more dangerous than previously believed. There are many slang terms used for marijuana, some are pot, weed, cannabis, Mary Jane, hash, dope, bud, green, smoke, to name a few.

Order Custom legalization of marijuana paper

There are many pros and cons to the use of marijuana. Many people use this drug for medical use, and others use it for entertainment. In the United States, using marijuana for medical purposes is illegal. Since the 1970's thirty-five state legislatures have passed laws supporting marijuana's use as a medicine. People suffering from nausea and vomiting, who are unable to swallow and hold down a pill, smoking marijuana is often the only reliable way to deliver THC. Another pro to the use of marijuana is diminishing glaucoma; it also can be affective in stimulating appetite in AIDS patients. There is also evidence that smoked marijuana and THC reduce muscle spasms from spinal cord injuries and multiple sclerosis. Physicians have reported that smoked marijuana provides relief from migraine headaches, depression, seizures, insomnia, and chronic pain. I think marijuana should be legal because if people sold pot in their stores, pot smokers would buy it, and it would boost the economy. I also think some drug crimes and innocent killings would go down an enormous amount.

There are many cons to the use of this drug. Marijuana produces immediate, temporary changes in thoughts, perceptions, and information processing, even though there is no convincing scientific evidence that pot causes psychological damage or mental illness in either teenagers or adults. Many Americans believe that marijuana plays a role in violent acts while on this drug. Almost all human and animal studies show that pot decreases rather than increases aggression. There is a myth that pot interferes with male and female sex hormones, but in fact there is no evidence that marijuana causes infertility in men or women. Another con of pot is it could possibly be a gateway drug. Even if marijuana itself causes minimal harm, it is a dangerous substance because it leads to the use of harder drugs. One of the biggest cons of legalizing "Mary Jane" would be that a large amount of Americans would be smoking pot all the time, and they would end up going to work stoned, and not think straight while on the job.

Marijuana is rapidly increasing in popularity throughout the world. Many people find pot to be a gateway drug, like a stepping stone toward other harmful drugs. There are many reasons why young kids get into this drug at an early age, one reason I think this is is because of the types of music kids listen to. If your children listen to any CD with a parental advisory sticker, most likely that record will take about the use of marijuana and any other drugs that artists do. Marijuana is the most popular illegal drug in the United States today. Therefore, people who have used less popular drugs, such as heroin, cocaine, and LSD, are likely to have also used marijuana. Most marijuana users never use any other illegal drug. For the large majority of people, marijuana is a terminus rather than a gateway drug. In a test of marijuana users ever trying cocaine, it shows that from 1975 to 1996 the highest it ever got was Twenty Five percent, and before that it was down ten to Fifteen percent. For every 100 people who have tried marijuana, twenty-eight have tried cocaine, only twelve have used cocaine twelve or more times, five have used cocaine more than one hundred times. One currently uses cocaine once a week or more.

I think people that get caught with marijuana should not be punished as hard as they do. Marijuana arrest in the United States has doubled between 1991 and 1995. In 1995, more than one-half-million people were arrested for pot offenses. Eighty –six percent of them were arrested for marijuana possession. Tens of thousands of people are now in prison for marijuana offenses. An even greater number are punished with probation, fines, and civil sanctions, including having their property seized, their driver's licenses revoked, and their employment terminated. Under federal law, possessing a single joint (or less) of marijuana is punishable by a fine from $1,000 to $10,000 and up to a year in prison .For people on probation or parole for any criminal offense, a marijuana arrest can result in their immediate incarceration. For people who live in public housing, the arrest of any family member for a drug offense can cause eviction of the entire family. Under state and federal law, mere investigation for a marijuana offense can result in the forfeiture of property, including cash, cars, boats, land, and houses. Despite these civil and criminal acts, pot continues to be readily available and widely used. In 1970, there were 188,903 total arrests. In 1995, there were 588,963 total arrests in the United States. I think that all those charges for one marijuana offense are harsh, even though pot is an illegal drug. An average of 3,677 marijuana offenders has been put in federal prison each year since 1990. This compares to an average of about 1,900 per year in the 80's and about 1,200 per year in the 1970's.

The average of marijuana seized by the police in 1980 was 1.96 percent and there were one hundred fifty-three seizures, compared to the 3.33 percent in 1993 and 3,354 seizures.

I believe that if pot can be legal in other countries, than it should be legal in the United States too. The marijuana policy in the Netherlands is a failure. Dutch law, which allows marijuana to be bought, sold, and used openly, has resulted in increasing rates of pot use, particularly among youth. For more than twenty years, Dutch citizens over age eighteen have been permitted to buy and use cannabis, also in Holland, anyone more than fifteen years old can buy marijuana as easily as different flavors of ice cream. In the Netherlands adolescent marijuana use has increased 250 percent. In the late 1970's law allowed the Dutch government to create a set of guidelines under which coffee shops could sell marijuana without fear of criminal prosecution. I think that the children of the parents living in the Netherlands would be hard to raise because of all the pot surrounding them.

Marijuana makes users passive, lazy, and uninterested in the future. Students who use pot become underachievers and workers who use marijuana become unproductive. Young marijuana users are less likely to achieve their academic potential; pot keeps a person from functioning at full potential. It makes an above average student average, and an average student below average. These are just some of the things that people say about marijuana users. Studies of college students have found few differences between marijuana users and nonusers. Marijuana users and nonusers are equally inclined to participate in sports and extracurricular activities, and place equal value on achievement and success. I don't believe that pot makes people lazy, or makes them underachievers.

Even though I think pot should be legal, it does cause harm to your lungs. The effects of one marijuana joint on the lungs are equivalent to four tobacco cigarettes, placing the user at increased risk of bronchitis, emphysema, and bronchial asthma. A single joint contains the same amount of tar and other noxious substances as approximately fourteen to sixteen filtered cigarettes. Marijuana smokers typically inhale more deeply and retain smoke in their lungs longer than tobacco smokers. As a result, marijuana smokers get more dangerous material in the lungs each time they smoke. Smoking pot is very harmful to your health, family, and friends.

Some myths of marijuana and highway safety are marijuana-like alcohol- seriously impairs driving in some respects; pot is even more impairing than alcohol. I think this is true because marijuana does affect perception and driving ability. I believe that pot makes many people drive different, and it makes you a dangerous person at the wheel, while on this drug.

There are thousands of people around the world that are trying to prevent marijuana smoke. Drug education and prevention programs reduced marijuana use during the 1980's. Since then, our commitment has slackened, and pot use has been rising. There is no evidence that anti-drug messages diminish young people's interest in drugs. Anti-drug campaigns in the schools and the media may even make drugs more attractive. Marijuana use among the youth declined throughout the 1980's, and began increasing in the 1990's. This increase occurred despite young people's exposure to the most massive anti-marijuana campaign in American history.

Marijuana's persistence in the body varies from person to person, but normally the THC can stay in the brain for as long as two to five hours, although, pot stays in the blood stream for even longer. Many active drugs enter the body's fat cells too. The THC exits the fat cells slowly making traces of marijuana up to days and weeks following ingestion. The most important consequence of marijuana's slow excretion is that it can be detected in blood, urine, hair, and in tissue long after it is used. THC is eventually biotransformed into active metabolites. Thus if you have to take a drug test for a job you might not want to apply for that job a few weeks after you smoked. I think drug test are a good thing because, you don't want potheads working for you.

Marijuana is still the most commonly used drug in the United States and probably will be for years to come. Marijuana is on the rise and will increase in popularity throughout the United States. I'm sure that our government will eventually legalize marijuana, but not soon. Many people argue the pros and cons of pot. I think our government should at least try to see what would happen to the economy if pot was legal, even though it is a huge risk to take. This problem is argued as much as should the alcohol age be lowered again, many teenagers argue this because if there old enough to go to fight in a war, then you should be able to drink. Many younger kids smoke pot without a care and they don't realize the affects of the drug. America needs to start taking a larger action, and try to get the point across to the youth of America. This will always be a huge argument throughout the world. The question that everyone asks, should pot be legal in the United States.
