The Crucible provides us with an example of a masterpiece of dramatic writing. In this play Arthur Miller displays a variety of theatrical techniques all of which are compacted into each act. The play is a parallel to what Miller was experiencing under General McCarthy's command, as the search for communist is similar to a modern witch-hunt. The Crucible begins with a group of girls caught dancing in the forest, where the community jumped straight to witchcraft due to their strict religious beliefs. At this very moment, hysteria filled to whole community, resulting in false accusations and mass hangings. Truth was powerless against the hysteria as evil infiltrates all reasons. Miller's effective use of stage directions, dialogues and…helps to achieve the development of dramatic tension felt throughout the play, especially at the climax of Proctors inner conflict in Act 4. However, there are specific moments of heightened tension within scenes from previous acts that contribute to the ultimate climax, thus making it very powerful. As a result, by the end of each scene we not only understand Miller's message but we also find ourselves convinced by his arguments.

Miller's talent as a dramatic writer is clearly shown by the development of tension throughout Act I, especially towards the end. Abigail is responsible for the hysteria/tension as her thirst for vengeance. When Abigail "enraptured" shouts of "I want the light of God," it completely broke the previous slowness of Tituba's confessions. Miller expertly makes Tituba's confessions slow and broken by her poor English and suddenly quickens the pace in hysteria that follows. The change in pace form an already tense situation to one even more tense engages the audience to feel the dramatic tension brewing between the characters. The accusations continues with cries of "I saw…with the Devil" which becomes faster as all the girls join in and the act ends "[on their ecstatic cries]". The audience feels like shouting out at Hale that it's obvious the girls are frauds and Tituba has made a false confession so she can save her skin. As the tension develops the mass accusations turns into hysteria. In Act I, Miller identifies the narrow-mindedness of the human nature and the consequences of it. Therefore a sense of outrage is created among the audience.

Although dramatic tension is evident in Act I, Act II takes it to a whole new level. We are not only exposed to the tension that develops within society but also within certain relationships under this confined society. There has always been a subtle tension underlying the Proctor's relationship ever since John's crime of lechery. Every time they face each other, their relationship strains under their arguments. Elizabeth doesn't want friction in their fragile relationship but "yet she must" persist in order to have her say in the family. She feels betrayed by her husband's actions but yet she knows that he is still coming to terms with it himself. Due to their poor communication with each other, misunderstanding brewed heavily in their relationship. Thus the tension is felt ….

Above this, the mass accusations in Salem are taking its toll. Elizabeth unfortunately is also accused and at the time of her arrest, John realises the shame that he has brought upon his family. In order for his to apologise to her, he argues and eventually fights to save her life.

"She is innocent…I'll tell you what's walking Salem…vengeance"

His guilt gaive his strength to conflict with the magistrate and at the same time compounding the tension as he struggles against society. Miller identifies the terrifying nature of false accusations and the power and fragility of love. However, in the face of the hysteria, nothing can stop proceeding.

As tension develops within each act, it also builds form the previous act. When Elizabeth enters the court room and replies "No,Sir" to Danforth's pressing questions of her husband's crime, is the most nerve racking passages in The Crucible. We know that Elizabeth has "never lied" and indeed "cannot lie" but her attempts to not answer Danforth intensifies the corrosive tension experienced by the audience. The fact that she doesn't know whether to answer Yes or No because both her husband and Abigail have their backs turned to her and if she gives a wrong answer, everything will be lost heralds an upsurge of tension. Danforth's demand for an answer from Elizabeth intensifies the already tension filled atmosphere.

"look at me! …Answer my question! Is your husband a lecher?"

His harsh tone jeopardised all the security and courage in Elizabeth. As a result of this "[crises of indecision, she cannot speak.]" III This moment of silence captured the most explicit tension have yet seen in the play, as she makes the choice that will determine the life or death of he husband. The symbolic nature of Elizabeth's lie proves that 'anyone can be wielded under pressure'. Here a woman who cannot lie has told a lie due to the suffocating atmosphere in the court. Thus Miller's purpose is the show that even a dignified person can become weak when faced with the pressure of hysteria. As a result of Elizabeth's actions the dramatic tension is developing into a new height.

Executive Summary

The Maytag Company was created in 10 because F.L. Maytag had found a niche in the market by producing washing machines. They were extremely successful and held 40-50% of the market share throughout the 10's and 0's. F.L. Maytag had created a product that was known for its quality and was a product that targeted the high-end consumer. Maytag continued to enjoy market leadership, market share growth, and profits until they tried to expand globally in 188.

Expanding globally seems to be the root cause of Maytag's problems they are currently facing. They seemed to have leapt into the global market and due to their losses they were not prepared to enter this market. Upon realizing this Maytag took on a retrenchment strategy that caused them to fall behind their competition in the North American market and allowed their main competitors to have an advantage over them because they had been focusing on the North American market while Maytag was focusing on global operations.

Basic Analysis

Weaknesses/Threats

· Maytag had three CEO's in only a five-year span. This created changes in the company's strategies and they had to spend a significant amount of time reversing the implementation of projects started by Ward.

· Maytag took significant losses when it had to retrench from the global market. Maytag tried to enter a new market too quickly and this was the root cause of their problems. During this time their competitors were able to remain profitable which Maytag was trying to reduce their losses by selling off operations soon after they were bought and significant investments had been made in them. This caused Maytag to fall behind their competitors and have been trying to catch up ever since.

· Industry experts stated that Maytag's marketing strategy was confusing. The brand Maytag was a high end product but they were selling this line through discount stores. Maytag did have products for all markets and experts stated that their lower end products should be sold at discount stores and not the high end products. This could cause consumers to question the quality of their high end product if it is sold at discount stores and in competition with brand that are not of the same quality as the Maytag line.

· Maytag's competitors such as Whirlpool and Electrolux were expanding to international markets while Maytag was in the process of retrenching and re-establishing itself in the North American market. This shows that they are behind their competition and must find a way to catch up with them in order to maintain and grow their market share.

· Maytag has also lost market share in the North American industry because they were concentrating on retrenchment from the international market. This gave their competitors a chance to take some of their market share and move on to global entry while Maytag was moving in the opposite direction. It was stated by a financial analyst, Lawrence Horan, after the shareholders meeting in 00 that Maytag had in so many words admitted that they have lost market share and the only reason their sales increased in 001 was due largely to the acquisition of Amana.

· In 00 the U.S. and Canadian markets had reached maturity, future sales were only expected to grow 1.% annually, and sell pricing were forced to remain low to be competitive although operating costs were increasing.

· Maytag's debt to equity ratio has been increasing significantly which shows that they are investing more borrowed money than investing capital.

Strengths/Opportunities

· Maytag was known as a high quality product. They received several awards such as and EFFIE in 8 and in 1 they were awarded Outstanding Corp. Innovator.

· Maytag put significant funds into R&D but they were slow to introduce new improvements due to their systematic approach. Due to this Maytag developed closer relationships with key suppliers and created strategic alliances with them.

· Maytag has products to cover all markets. The company had the "power" lines of Maytag, Amana, and Jenn Air that were marketed to the high-end consumer, while they also had two "value brands"; Magic Chef and Admiral.

· In a survey of Americans, Maytag was 15th on the list of strongest brand names. The survey was done based on quality and consumer recognition.

· Hake stated at the stockholders meeting in 00 that they were going to reduce their purchased materials cost by opening a component plant in Mexico. This should help Maytag to increase profitability by decreasing their manufacturing costs.

· Maytag's culture focuses on quality and customer satisfaction. Their goal is to make a quality product and service their customer so they will keep coming back and purchasing from Maytag.

· Due to Maytag's quality products the culture of the employee's has always been pride in the products they are producing. When Maytag acquired Admiral the employees of Admiral had questioned Hadley, the CEO at the time, when the name on the water tower would be changed to Maytag from Admiral, Hadley's response was "when you earn it". This goes to show that the employees of Maytag must care about the quality of the product they produce.

Root Cause Analysis

In 188 Maytag tried to expand into the international market because management had felt the U.S. major home appliances had become a mature market. They expanded internationally by acquisitions. Maytag was unable to become successful in the international market due to their inability to overcome the culture changes and it seems there was lack of research done on the facilities they were acquiring because many of them needed renovations and upgrades. Due to Maytag's inability to make their entrance into the global market successful, they suffered significant losses in both profits and in capital that was invested into oversea facilities for improvements. The investments made were lost when they had to retrench and sold off almost all of their international operations in 14 and 15.

At this time Maytag's competitors were able to run profitability and Maytag had taken considerable losses. This put Maytag in an undesirable position that the have been trying to overcome. In 17 they hired Ward as CEO to implement a successful company strategy by reducing costs and speeding up development in order to be able to introduce new products to the market faster. It was not long before Maytag's Board of Directors realized through significant stock price decreases and differences in Ward's strategy for Maytag that he was not the right fit for the company and he was asked to resign in 000. This was another significant setback for Maytag because they spent the next year or more undoing all the changes that Ward had implemented.

Conclusion

The recommended strategy I would recommend for Maytag to take at this point would be to focus on stability. They need to re-establish themselves in the North American market while their competitors are trying to make an entry into the global market. Maytag already has experience in the global market and if anything they have learned from their endeavor, they have learned what steps they took that caused them to fail. While their competitors are focusing on the global market they can focus their attention on gaining market share back in the North American market. Maytag is now in the position their competitors were in back in 18 and it is not know how successful either of their competitors will be in the global market. This could give Maytag a chance to get back on their feet in this market, streamline their operations, and increase their profits and market share. Once they have accomplished this successfully they can take on a growth strategy and enter the international market again with their own knowledge from their first experience and also learn from the success or failure of their competitors. I believe it will only take Maytag a year or so to be able to stabilize themselves and then can take on a growth strategy. They should not wait too long to grow into the international market because industry analysis show predict that there will not be much growth in the North American market, however they can focus on taking market share from Whirlpool while they are focusing overseas.

I do not feel they need to follow a retrenchment strategy any longer because they have sold off a majority of their international operations and they should not decrease their product lines they offer. They have already done the retrenchment necessary and should focus on regaining their market share and becoming and industry leader.

Maytag's growth strategy at this point is external growth, as it has been historically. They have expanded mostly through acquisitions. This has been a hit or miss strategy with them because most of their North American acquisitions have been a success for them while their international acquisitions were not. When Maytag is able to stabilize themselves in the North American market, which should not be difficult for them to do because they have past success in this for many years, they should grow into the internationals market. When they take the growth strategy on, they must use their past mistakes as experience and enter the market correctly this time. I do not feel they were prepared for the cultural differences when they first tried to enter the international market and they should hire a consulting firm to help them develop their international markets. Maytag has tried to operate internationally they way they do in the U.S. and must learn to adapt to different cultures in order to be able to be successful internationally.

Macbeths downfall was not determined by 1 single cause but by major aspects combining to take Macbeth down. The major aspects of Macbeths downfall were supernatural, he was seen to be king by promising him the title of thane of cawdor and fulfilling this promise. After seeing hat the witches predictions were coming true, Macbeths ambition and greediness take over him. Once Macbeth gives into these

cocky that he has no one left to help him which leads to his death.

The nd factor that leads Macbeth to his downfall was lady Macbeth. Lady Macbeth is really the one who pushes Macbeth to commit the murder on Duncan which really starts out the whole chain reaction of events. Lady Macbeth knows what Macbeth wants, and that is to be king. She knows that Macbeth will be able to do it on his own so she has to push him and pressure him into killing Duncan. Lady Macbeth does this for Macbeth, so that he will become king, which is what he wants. She does not do any of this for herself but strictly for Macbeth. Although lady Macbeth also wants some royalty and what not, she never does mention it in the play. In order for Macbeth to be king he must kill Duncan. But he keeps thinking twice about it and debates if he should do it or not. In lady Macbeths mind, Macbeth backing down and not committing the murder is not even an option. In order for Macbeth to commit this murder he needs someone to push him, and that is exactly what lady Macbeth does. She continuously pressures Macbeth by questioning his manly hood, his bravery and ambition. She even brings to account his lover for her in order to get him to commit this murder. This murder is the first committed by Macbeth, but once he finishes with this murder he gets blood thirsty and continues to murder more and more people which eventually lead to his death.

The rd and final factor of Macbeths downfall was his ambition. In order for Macbeth to be king he needed ambition but having to much proved to be the major aspect of his downfall. Ambition has both positive and negative aspects. Throughout the play, Macbeth shows both of these sides. Macbeths ambition lead him to kill Duncan in order to be king. Without this ambition he would have never committed and went through with this murder. Macbeths ambition lead him to never give up and to keep on pushing for more. But when Macbeth became over ambitious it proved to be the major aspect of his downfall. All his plans involved to much blood shed and evil actions to reach his goals. His over ambitious attitude made him be extremely cocky, think only of himself, make many enemies and overleap his goals. All those aspects put together lead to Macbeths death and downfall.

Supernatural, external and internal forces all played huge rolls in leading Macbeth to his downfall and eventually his death. The supernatural forces ( witches ) and lady Macbeth both pushed Macbeth to his downfall but not to the extent of his ambition. Macbeths ambition was the major aspect leading to his death. When the witches foretold the future and told him he would be king he went and killed Duncan as predicted. But then his over ambitious attitude came into play and pushed him to kill more and more. Lady Macbeth pressured and influenced Macbeth to murder Duncan. Macbeth did not have to listen to her and he could have turned his back and said no, but instead once again his ambitious attitude lead him to go on and commit this murder. everything that Macbeth did which was wrong was his choice. Regardless if he was pressured or not, in the end he still made the decision making ambition his major downfall and eventually his death

NAMES THAT DIVIDE in the modern Society of South Africa

The following will give you a short overview of apartheid-wise subdivision of the South African population and its current usage.

Whites Refers to anyone of European descent and is quite okay to use. However, the apartheid engendered non-white which meant that everyone else in the entire country is a total no-no.

Black When used as a political term as in black liberation movement, it applies to Africans, Indians and Coloured people all those fighting for political rights. But quite often it is used to mean only Africans, especially during Apartheid describing the people belonging to the more than 10 African native chiefdoms.

Cheap custom essay on Names that devide

Quite correctly it is used in terms like black township although you could just name the area - Soweto or Mamelodi. There is no harm in using it to describe a person as in black woman, but ONLY if there is a reason to distinguish colour, otherwise woman is obviously more adequate.

Coloured Refers to people of mixed race, a group made distinct by Apartheid despite their sometimes very similar heritage to the Afrikaners. Frequently referred to as the Bruin Afrikaners or Brown Afrikaners. There are about different subdivisions made by the Apartheid government just within the Coloured group.

Asian In the apartheid race classification, Asian was used to refer to almost anyone with roots in the Indian sub-continent and Asia. Many Indian and Chinese immigrants find it extremely offensive, especially as it takes no cognisance of the vast diversity of nations in that region.

OTHER DEFINITIONS

Sotho, Tswana, Zulu, Xhosa, Ndebele, Venda, Shangan- major African (black) peoples with own languages.

English refers to English speaking population

Afrikaner person of European, mostly Dutch or German origin, whose mother tongue is Afrikaans.

A person's anecdotes over certain subjects can sometimes be very accurate. They analyze every detail and present a precise description. Thus, a vivid account over the subject is the result. Ken Kesey illustrates his personal experiences with drugs and working at mental wards in his novel, One who flew over the Cuckoo's Nest.

Ken Kesey was born in La Junta, Colorado in 15. He graduated from the University of Oregon in 157. He was active in "wrestling and theater" (Kingwood College Library, 1). He seemed to lead a normal life. Yet, Kesey's life of normalcy abruptly stopped when he decided to volunteer as a guinea pig. He underwent "experiments with hallucinogenic drugs" (Kingwood College Library, 1). "In 164, …(Kesey) drove from San Francisco to New York in a psychadelic painted bus" (Kingwood College Library, 1). Kesey and his group were called the Merry Pranksters (Kesey, 1). Kesey named the bus Further (Kingwood College Library, 1).

The hallucinogenic drugs shaped much of Kesey's lifestyle. "Parts of the novel were written under the influence of LSD and peyote" (Kingwood College Library, 1). Kesey incorporated his experiences into his work. The Merry Pranksters were the focus in author Tom Wolfe's book The Electric Kool-Aid Test (Kesey, 1). "Green Kool-Aid laced with LSD" was the choice (Kingwood College Library, 1). "Kesey worked in the psychiatric ward in a veterans Administration hospital in California in 161" (Kesey, 1). His hands-on experience with the mentally ill improved his novel.

Ken Kesey's One Who Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest reflects many of his observations. It represents truth and the unknown to "normal" people. This is the extent of the paper for the class at hand for the period.

Feeling Motivated-PUMPED UP?

By James Tyler

Ever sit there vacantly gazing at your computer screen?

Wondering what am I going to contribute to the world today?

Do my essay on Feeling Motivated-PUMPED UP? CHEAP !

Reading good stuff is how I like to stay on top of the game.

" There's no richer emotion I know than the sense of contributionfeeling that who you are as a person, how you've lived your life, what you've said and done, has touched others in a deep and meaningful manner is the ultimate gift in life. The secret to living is giving. From Anthony Robbins " Giant Steps"

Seeing what is possible in adding to life is what really moves me.

I had to get an article together for an upcoming deadline, so grabbed the keypad and let the words fly!

I ran across quite a few articles from writers floating around online recently about Joint Ventures and cooperation. This reminded me of a story I heard about a businessman who was afraid of the new super chain store opening down the street from his establishment. Panic set in! Oh what to do?

He asked me "How can I compete with them? It's all over!

I told him, "What about the GREAT LAW? You know where your supply

comes from. What is there to fear?"

Mister Business man, "I must do something!"

I told him " Be at your business everyday and bless it, by claiming the Great Power that works through it for bountiful peace and prosperity for all!"

He agreed.

Then see the new business and do the same for it! He looked at me like I was a jerk!

I shared with him, "what blesses one blesses all!" If he hated his competition, he would be destroyed by this. So, ALWAYS bless you opponents.

Everyone in business who learns this becomes a success! If you see someone doing well in business, great! The spirit of "we are all in this world together" is the real key to prosperity and happiness.

When a successful online business person offers to work with you, then you have synergy! The sum of the parts is greater than the whole.

We all work hard online to earn a decent living. Stay the course and work in Synergy.

Teenagers today are constantly stereotyped and are misrepresented in the media. Daria and Kevin have many similarities and differences relating to teenagers social, emotional and physical "clicks" today. The purpose of this essay is to delineate the similarities and differences between teenagers (Daria and Kevin). Even though Daria and Kevin are extremely stereotyped, they show day to day problems that teenagers go through.

Relating to the chosen videos, Daria and Kevin have a few similarities that define each others personalities. They include social, emotional and physical. The social side of their lives are quite similar in that they both are considered as "social outcasts" and seem to have only one true/close friend. The emotional side of things include their self-esteem. They both have a high self esteem for themselves, but have a low esteem for others. Also their respect, they have no respect for elders e.g. their parents. The physical part of their lives include their lack of presentation, they don't care what anyone thinks. Also the way they walk, they usually have their heads hung low and "trudge" were ever they go.

Although Daria and Kevin act alike, there are some differences contrasting their personalities. They include social, emotional and physical. Their social lives are in fact almost incomparable, but there are a few differences; Daria has been invited to a party, Kevin on the other hand decides to have his own party, that shows that Daria actually is not that antisocial and can get invited to parties and Kevin is what you would call a "wanna be". The emotional differences that compare their personalities include the way Daria never shows any emotion even when she wants something, she never "sucks up". Kevin is quite different, when he wants something he pretends to be well mannered and polite. The physical differences between Daria and Kevin include the way Daria shows some physical activity, while Kevin is usually on the couch in front of the TV eating etc.

Teenagers today are becoming more and more stereotypical due to the media. Teenagers are not represented fairly; the media is so over the top with stereotypes. They are represented unfairly in shows such as Daria, Kevin and Perry, Beavis and Butthead and many more. Teenagers are not represented fairly because otherwise the show would be boring to watch. Even though it's wrong, it's entertaining for even teenagers. The media relies mainly on teenager stereotypes for movies and TV shows. Teenagers can also be represented fairly and those such as; Neighbours, Home and Away, Degrassi high and other soap operas. Teenagers are represented fairly in those TV shows because they are supposed to reflect real life situations. Comparing the number of non stereotypical to the stereotypical shows, the non stereo typical shows are minimal and the stereo typical shows are at extremely high and increasing. The media has many different ways in which it works but teenagers seem to be there main target.

Cheap Custom Essays on Comparison of Daria and Kevin

In conclusion, teenagers are represented and misrepresented in many different ways. Teenagers and stereotypes will always be a big part of the media and as the media creates new ideas, the stereotyping will get worse and more insulting. Nobody even bothers about complaining to the media anymore because there is so much of it around, it's not worth it.

Elisa is frustrated as a woman, and so has taken on masculine qualities, so she is first depicted as a woman whose strengths are really too much for the tasks at hand. She was cutting down the old year's chysanthemum stalks with a pair of short and powerful scissors, the reader learns. She has too much energy for the job. Her face was eager and mature and handsome; even her work with the scissors was over-eager, over-powerful. The chrysanthemum stems seemed too small and easy for her energy. Thus, we get a sense, early on, of Elisa's promise, of her potential. But it is also checked and limited by her circumstances and by her stereotypical role as a woman, and as a farmer's wife.

A tinker comes on the scene. Elisa's first response to his overtures as a salesman is in her masculine guiseshe simply tells him she has no work for him. But he persists, and he finds her soft spot, her chrysanthemums. While it is possible to interpret Elisa's love for the chrysanthemums as her need to mother, (she has no children), it is also possible to see her love for her flowers as an expression of the creative female principle (Renner 07). In the next paragraphs, we witness Elisa's flirtation with this tinker, who is really only interested in making a sale. But he succeeds in gaining access to her emotional side, her feminine side, and lets go of her need to control the situation.

As her creative female side emerges in the presence of the tinker, Elisa's character undergoes a dramatic change. Her love for the natural beauty of the flowersfor her own feminine sidecombines with her natural strength, and a whole woman begins to emerge. Let us track this process as it reveals itself. Her female, receptive side is revealed as she notices the size and sheer physical presence of the tinker, Elisa saw that he was a very big man. Although his hair and beard were greying, he did not look old....He took off his battered hat. With this felt urge to open up, Elisa stands up and shoves the thick scissors in her apron pocket. She shields the symbol of her energy and strength, as if the world weren't ready to see it.

It is not the tinker or his attentions that interest her. Instead, it is the sharing of what she has grown from the bitter, hard earth, her chrysanthemums, a symbol of her potential for wholeness. When the tinker says that he knows someone who would like her flowers (in an attempt to gain her sympathy and get some work), she opens up to him like a flower in the sun, The irritation and resistance melted from Elisa's face. Her eyes grow eager and alert, and Elisa's enthusiasm for the sharing of the flower buds grows with her excitement at the possibility of such expansion.

Cheap Custom Essays on the grapes of wrath

The promise comes to a high point as Elisa transfers the symbolic chrysanthemum buds to the tinker. She doesn't know whether he will understand her meaning, but she confides in him that she has planting hands, hands that know what the earth needs and wants. At this moment, she is at her best. She knows that she can be both strong and receptive, that she can be whole

Elisa's voice grew husky. She broke in on him. I've never lived as you do, but I know what you mean. When the night is darkwhy, the stars are sharp-pointed, and there's quiet. Why, you rise up and up! Every pointed star gets driven into your body. It's like that. Hot and sharp andlovely. (Chrysanthemums).

At this moment, Elisa has access to the larger picture, and she knows what it means to

"A young lady's role is to be a fit wife to her husband. She must give herself completely to him. She must always be presentable and modest, pretty and pure. She has to be able to cook, sew, clean and look after his children. She has to manage on what money he gives her and not complain. She is the height of purity and goodness."

The role of the wife and mother of the 10s and 10s is very different from how it is today. Back then women were only used to serve men. They were used to cook, sew, clean and look after their children. They had no say in society. All they said and thought didn't matter at all. But since time has gone by, things have changed.

Since suffragists, feminists, and the whole Women's Liberation Movement, women have become more equal to men. Both world war one and world war two have changed women's ideas of what they were capable of achieving and doing. The suffragist movement had made women aware of their lack of protection under the law. Many suffragists were shocked when they realised that their husbands had sole rights over the custody of their children. At one stage, if a woman left her husband, all she was allowed to take with her was her marriage certificate and her sewing machine.

What became obvious in the years of the 140s was that women could do what was regarded as 'men's work' as good as the men but those women who were forced to work to provide for themselves had very little protection under the law in the workplace and were given poor conditions and low wages.

The Patriot Historical Accuracy

The Patriot is a fictional piece with the timeframe and events of the American Revolution, with a few exceptions. As suggested in the title, there are obvious biases in favour of the United States right from the beginning. Th

1) The brutality of the British regulars is, in the worlds of star Mel Gibson, 'juiced up' for dramatic effect. In one scene, the British regulars murder wounded American POWs; in another, they order the execution of a colonial soldier captured in uniform. In fact, such war crimes by regular troops rarely happened. Spies and traitors, such as Nathan Hale (American) and Major John Andre (British), were hanged, and irregular militias, terrorist bands allied to both sides and Indian proxies certainly carried out some horrific atrocities. But regular troops on both sides almost universally observed the law of war that distinctions should be made between the former categories and uniformed combatants.

In the most bizarre scene, the people an entire town are locked in a church, which is then set on fire. This mimics a notorious Nazi war crime, when 64 peple were massacred in the French village of Oradour sur Glane in June 144, but no such incident took place in the American Revolution. As historian Thomas Fleming puts it 'Of course it never happened. If it had do you think Americans would have forgotten it? It could have kept us out of World War I.'

) The film gives the impression that the conflict was a straight fight between British troops and colonials only one colonist is shown fighting for the British, and regarded as an oddity by Tavington. However in reality, about a third of the colonists were rebels, a third were loyal to the British Crown and a third were neutral. Thus the Revolution was much more like a civil war, with communities and even families split between 'patriots' and 'loyalists'.

) Similarly, The Patriot tends to exaggerate the degree to which a unified 'American' identity had been forged in the 1770s. For instance, the colonials all sound like modern Americans, wheras in truth there would have been a wide range of European tongues and accents being spoken. Similarly the American flag with the circle of stars would not have been used in battle at that time, but is flown in the film to give greater dramatic impact.

4) The declaraction by George Washington that slaves who fight for the Continental cause will earn their freedom is fictional.

5) The film-makers enlisted the help of the Smithsonian Institute to ensure the movie was free from anachronism in terms of military chronology, weapons used and costumes worn. However, certain changes were made for dramatic reasons. In battle sequences, the colours of uniforms have been altered to make it clearer to the audience which side is which. (According to the Smithsonian's Bobby Moss, often the only way to distinguish between Loyalist and Patriot soldiers was what they wore in their caps the loyalists had pine twigs and the Patriots white paper). Similarly, the soldiers led by Tavington, the Green Dragoons, wore (as their name would suggest) green in real life, but in the film they are given red coats to align them in the audience's mind with the rest of the British army.

Another change that may infuriate purists is the merging of two important 1781 battles Cowpens and Guildford Courthouse into one. However, both battles were similar, in that local militia fought alongside the continental army to help turn the tide against the British in South Carolina.

The cannons used in the final battle scene are lb guns. These werent used in the field - the correct gun should have been the smaller 6lb gun. But, at the end of the day, the director wanted bigger bangs.

It is also worth mentioning that some of the characters are 'based on' real-life American Revolution combatants.

- Tavington is based on the historical figure Lieutenant Colonel Banastre Tarleton, who was renowned for the violence and brutality he inflicted on his enemies. The phrase 'Tarleton's quarter' was coined to refer to his practice of ordering the execution of defeated combatants even after they had put down their weapons and waved the white flag. He continued his reign of terror until Cornwallis surrended at Yorktown in 1781, after which he became MP for Liverpool and lived to the age of 78.

In book one, Daphne suddenly wants nothing to do with Apollo as he chases her out of love, and she then turns into an oak tree. Jove is transformed into a mighty bull in book two, and Europa becomes fearless.

"...Apollo...at once...loved And she (Daphne) at once fled from the name of the lover..." (Ovid 17 47-474). This quote depicts Cupid shooting Apollo with a sharp arrow, causing him to fall madly in love with Daphne, as she is hit with a dull arrow which makes her want to flee from him. Their feelings change by the strike of an arrow, an obvious emotional alteration that they undergo in the story. When the chase ends after Daphne pleas to her father river to be saved, "...her hair was leaves, Her arms were branches, and her speedy feet Rooted..." (Ovid 1-1 550-55). After this material transformation, Apollo remains in love with the tree that he claims as his own.

"...the great father...took upon himself the form of a bull..." (Ovid 55 46-51). Followed by this dramatic alteration of Jove, the king's daughter "...Loses all fear...and she grows bolder." (Ovid 55 867-868). Europa, the daughter, touches the muscular bull and then rides off with him, as a new person since becoming more courageous.

These examples reflect Ovid's style in writing this particular story where he has several characters undergo constant modifications.

Often times when people have a hard time dealing with reality they resort into a sense of illusion, such as day dreaming. This is seen when evaluating the dominant theme in The Glass Menagerie-the difficulty people have in accepting and relating to reality. As a result of their inability to overcome this difficulty, every major character in Tennessee Williams' play "The Glass Menagerie" withdraw into a private world of illusion and fantasy to find the comfort they can't find in real life.

Out of the major characters in the play Laura is probably the one most detached from reality. There are several symbols in the play that represent this fact. First of all Laura has a glass collection that she carefully takes care of, and in a sense plays with. Given her age, this act is very odd, and not acceptable. Her glass menagerie is an example of the imaginary world she lives in to escape her real life where she has many problems. Laura's real problems include being cripple, not finishing high school, dropping out of her typing class and not telling her mother, and lastly disappointing her mother by not having any "gentlemen callers". Another strong symbol of Laura's obsession with fantasy is the nickname that Jim gave her in high school, "Blue Roses". Blue roses do not exist in nature, and are therefore an illusion. Laura's obsession with this nickname again shows her distance from reality. Everytime Laura tries to step out of her imaginary world and into the real world something trips her up. For example, when Amanda sends Laura to the store and she trips while going down the fire escape that symbolizes a way for the inside world to get into Laura's imaginary life. Lastly, Laura's favorite figurine in her glass menagerie is that of a unicorn, an animal that does not really exist except for in fantasies. Additionally, Laura sees herself as a type of unicorn, something different from the majority. When Jim and Laura dance they knock over the unicorn, causing the horn to break off symbolizing that when Laura gets closer to reality she breaks. After Jim tells her he is engaged, she is no longer getting nearer to reality, but rather is broken hearted and gives him the broken unicorn, symbolic of how he has broken her heart. Laura is fragile, and is safer in her world of fantasy. Tom is similar and at the same time similar to Laura.

At the beginning of the play the reader is given the impression that Tom is the only one in the Wingfield family who is capable of functioning in the real world. Tom interacts with strangers, and has a job out in the real world in order to finance his mother, sister, and himself. However, Tom also withdraws into his illusions to escape from the never-ending arguments and disagreements he has with his mother. Also, Tom is frustrated about his boring and, what he considers, meaningless life. During the play, Tom often times says he spends his late night at the movies. His obsession with movies represents his attempt to escape reality and disappear into a fantasy world. Additionally, Tom's attempt to dodge reality and escape into a illusion is seen when Tom hides out on the fire escape. Tom sees the fire escape as a way out. While Laura overall is content with her imaginary life, Tom isn't and wants out. Tom always makes jokes about his dad, and how he fell in love with long distances. This is his attempt to ease the pain of abandonment by turning it into something humorous. It is clear that what Tom resents most about his father is

exactly what Tom himself will carry out in the end, an escape from the Wingfield's demented world of illusion. Through his father, Tom has seen that an escape is possible, and though he is hesitant to leave his sister and even his mother behind, he is being driven to go through with it.

Mr. Wingfield, the father of Tom and Laura, and Amanda's husband, is referred to often throughout the story. He is the ultimate symbol of escape from the fantasy world of the Wingfield household, and an illusion of freedom. This is because he has managed to remove himself from the desperate situation that the rest of his family is still living in. His picture still hangs on the wall as a constant reminder of better times and days gone by. Amanda always makes rude remarks about her missing husband, yet lets his picture remain, showing she is stuck in the past. The portrait of Mr. Wingfield still hanging in the house is an example of Amanda, being stuck in the past, and living in a world of illusion. Additionally, Amanda asks Laura everyday how many gentlemen callers she will be expecting that evening, even though she should know that Laura never is expecting any. This repetitive act is another example of Amanda's world of illusion. Furthermore, even after Tom tells her that his co-worker Jim is not coming over to call on Laura, but rather just eat dinner with the Wingfield's Amanda insists that Jim is Laura's first gentlemen caller.

Though each character has their own form of illusions and a fantasy world they all escape due to their inability to deal with the problems that they are confronted with in their real life. Tom, unlike Amanda and Laura, was discontented with his situation and escaped, leaving Amanda and Laura behind in their fantasy world.
