During the time of Jesus Christ, the two major religious groups in Israel were the Pharisees and the Sadducees. These two religious sects were very much alike yet they were so different. Together with the high priest, the Pharisees and the Sadducees made up the Sanhedrin which was composed of seventy-two people. Both of these groups came about shortly after the Maccabean revolt which took place about the year 170 B.C.

The Pharisees were more religiously minded, while the Sadducees concentrated more on the political issues of their day. The Pharisees believed in most of the Old Testament scriptures while the Sadducees only looked to the Pentatuech, or the first five books of the Old Testament. The Sadducees mainly came from priestly nobility, but the Pharisees came from all classes of people. Because of this, the Pharisees were a larger group, probably close to about 6,000 people, while the Sadducees were a much smaller group. Another difference between these two religious sects was that the Pharisees believed in a bodily resurrection and eternal life. However, the Sadducees believed in neither of these truths that were clearly taught by Jesus. The Sadducees also did not believe in angels or demons while the Pharisees did.

Although these two groups disliked and distrusted one another, they became allies in their common hatred for Jesus. The main reason that the Pharisees and Sadducees disliked Jesus so much was because His message of grace and mercy was different than their message of self-righteousness and important worldly status. It is amazing how two groups of people who are so different in their beliefs can come together to destroy the one and only Son of God. However, they were just there so that God could use them to carry out His wonderful plan of grace and mercy. Even though their hatred for Jesus led to His death on Calvary, three days later, He arose to claim victory over death and sin.
