Why is Horace Mann important?

He is considered the "father of public school" education. He served as Sec. of the Board of Education for Massachusetts. During this time, he wrote reports (1 Annual Reports) that outlined the problems and solutions of education that were implemented throughout the country.

He established schools for teacher training, turning it into a real profession.

He won financial backing for public education. Wages of teachers increased also.

Write my Essay on Horace Mann cheap

He established free school district libraries.

Why did people oppose him?

Religious leaders thought that schools should teach their own particular doctrine….Mann believed that schools should teach a universal doctrine of morality, not a specific branch of religion. He was a threat to their way of schooling.

Others didn't believe that it WAS the right of certain types of people (girls, blacks, or the poor). At that time, the rich were basically educating their children at home because they could afford tutors.

People who were already teaching or involved with education did not want to change their ways.

"Where I have found the worst schools I have found the spirit of self-complacency, and even an offensive disinclination to hear of better methods."

"Most teachers have been activated to greater exertions by the account of the best schools abroad. Others are offended at being driven out of the Paradise which their own self-esteem erected for them."

What were his basic beliefs?

--He thought that public education would give everyone a basic moral education which would, in turn, lead to a more civilized public.

--He thought that education would level the playing field for the poor and disadvantaged, increasing their competitiveness in the job market.

--He thought that schools should teach children how to make better decisions about life in general.

--He thought that the government had a responsibility to provide funding for the schools.

--He thought that every person in the country was entitled to attend a free school.

--He believed that it was possible to teach a core set of values that were not limited to one religious view.

He also felt that grown people were too stubborn to change, so he concentrated on the youth.

"Let the next generation be my client."

"Having found the present generation composed of materials almost unmalleable, I am about transferring my efforts to the next. Men are cast-iron, but children are wax."

How does he relate to the theme of "Rights and Responsibilities?"

Mann believed that it is the responsibility of the government to make education available to each and every child, a belief that is still held in the United States today. This is not a world-wide belief, but one that most of the "civilized world" seems to share. Countries vary on exactly what this means and how it is enforced and implemented.

In the U.S., each child is entitled to a free education and we have mandatory attendance laws until the age of 15. It is the right of every child to be able to attend a school with teachers who are qualified to teach. However, many students do not, in fact, receive a basic education. Drop out rates, tardiness, absenteeism, and lack of interest in general are things that the government really cannot control. So, while it may be the responsibility of the government to provide an education, it is ultimately the responsibility of the individual to make good use of the opportunity. While it is the right of each student to receive the education, the desire for education must come from within that individual.

It is interesting to note that despite almost 150 years of educational progress, the home state of Mann (Massachusetts) actually had a lower literacy rate in 10 (1%) than it did in 1850 (8%).

Education today… (from the interviews)

While it is the responsibility of the government to provide education for children, parents and the children themselves must also assume responsibility. Students must come to school ready to learn.

We seem to take this education for granted…not always showing up for school. Instead of it being a right that we will not have denied, we view it as a burden and a chore to go to school.

As for teaching core values Parents seem to have passed off all responsibility for teaching their own children manners and values.

QUOTES used on the board

"Every addition to true knowledge is an addition to human power."

"If a nation expects to be ignorant and free, in a state of civilization, it expects what never was and never will be." --Thomas Jefferson

"Be ashamed to die until you have won some victory for humanity."

"Education , then, beyond all other devices of human origin, is the great equalizer of the conditions of menthe balance-wheel of the social machinery."

"A teacher who is attempting to teach without inspiring the pupil with a desire to learn is hammering on a cold iron."

For mere delving, an ignorant man is but a little better than a swine, whom he so much resembles in his appetites, and surpasses in his power of mischief…"

"Jails and prisons are the complement of schools so many less as you have of the latter, so many more must you have of the former."

"I think integrity is the single most important thing that we can teach our kids. Schools need to teach core values and ethics because the home isn't doing it." (Jarred Cotton, principal)

"Some parents send their kids unprepared to school without jackets, without lunches, etc. They don't teach kids manners, not even 'sorry' or 'excuse me'…It's my job to show them the options they have in life, present them with all the facts and let them draw the conclusions." (Joanna Cotton, teacher)

"Business Practices to Think About"

Help with essay on Andrew Carnegie and the Gospel of Wealth

Paper #1

Word Total 44

After watching the film, "Andrew Carnegie and the Gospel of Wealth," I realized the variety of work ethics this film portrayed. Although many practices seemed obviously harsh and rude, other practices seemed so thoughtful that you often caught yourself wondering if the actor was really as bad as he seemed or if he had a morally correct motive for his actions in the film.

At the beginning of the film we find out that two of the characters, Henry Clay Frick, and Andrew Carnegie have a law suit against one another. The film goes on to reveal just a little background about each character. We find that Charles Schwab tends to lie in order to get his way in life as well as in the working field. Andrew Carnegie, probably the most important character is a man of 61 who desires to destroy his competitor, J.P. Morgan's business. All of these people react in this film in ways that displays both positive and negative practices of work ethics.

Andrew Carnegie, as mentioned earlier, is a 61 year old man who is ready to make the biggest gamble of his life. He likes monopoly and desires to build a big, extravagant company that will take over the smaller ones, shutting these smaller businesses down. This is when you really begin to think about whether this is good or bad. Well, naturally, this is good for Carnegie who already has so much money that he gives it away to others. However, perhaps Carnegie wasn't thinking about the little man who relies solely on his small business just to get by from day to day and provide food for his wife and kids. This is one negative practice of values and work ethics.

Another negative practice is displayed when one of the characters reveals his belief that "the majority of money belongs to only a certain group of people." This is a very heartless statement. Everyone deserves money, especially enough to provide the necessities for a family as well as enough to survive through any emergency that may take place. I totally disagreed with this statement. It definitely came from a man who never had to worry about how he was going to feed his family or feed himself. Perhaps it would mean more if he were allowed to live this way for a short while in order to change his opinion.

Because of Carnegie's philosophy that "the man that dies rich dies disgraced," he gave his money away. Well, is this good or bad? It can seem both in sort of a sense. If he gives the money to the right people who don't have anything then perhaps we could view this as being a positive act of work ethics. However, what about his workers who didn't seem to have so much? Why not just raise their salary and give them the money he could give away. Carnegie often was caught throughout the film, exploiting his workers. With this being a negative practice, he could have possibly given them more money just to put up with him and his attitude.

However, because of Carnegie's belief about giving his money away, a positive practice did come out of this. This action made steel cheaper, therefore, allowing more building to be built as well as more skyscrapers making the business world grow as well making the cities grow in number of people and trade. This idea benefits a variety of areas within cities and home within that that city. Steel was used to make various items in the working world. Therefore, with the price of it being so cheap, many items were made and sold for cheaper than they were before making them more affordable.

Charles Schwab was Carnegie's business partner, much like a messenger or secretary. Schwab, as mentioned earlier, lies to get his way. So, at one point in the film, he invites J.P. Morgan to a dinner and does so without asking the permission of Carnegie first. He acts in this fashion because he strongly desires for Morgan to buy out Carnegie rather than Carnegie buy out J.P. Morgan's business. Schwab also met with Morgan in order to plan the steel industry, once again without Carnegie's permission. Schwab spoke against everything Carnegie stood for making his role in the film to seem much like that of a back-stabbing worker in the labor field. He was not only a liar to Carnegie but also to Morgan. Schwab also lied to Morgan about Carnegie breaking ground for his new business in order to get Morgan nervous so that he would quickly buy Carnegie out. This was, once again, a prime example of bad work ethics.

At the end of the film, Morgan buys out Carnegie's business costing him $1.5 million. This seems to be the end but it isn't. Carnegie really ripped Morgan off since he only paid $500,000 for the business himself. He charged Morgan three times the amount that it originally was and Morgan would have paid more if it had been asked. However, Morgan definitely gets repaid afterwards when he starts the first $1 billion industry. Therefore, he benefits from Carnegie's selfish ways.

Overall, this film displays both questionable positive and negative practices of values, beliefs and work ethics. I strongly think that the negative actions in this film outweigh the good, making it somewhat scary to have to deal with the business and advertisement industry. In this film, the idea that the actors are worrying only about themselves makes them seem very self-centered. I feel that sometimes, worrying and thinking about others rather than yourself, will benefit you more in the long run.

Jenny Joseph and Carol Ann Duffy have both written powerful poems dealing with

different stages of life and growing up. Carol Ann Duffy has written a poem called "In Mrs. Tilscher's class" dealing with the early stages of life, a child growing into adolescence. Jenny Joseph has written a poem called "Warning" dealing with the later stages of life, a middle age person going into old age. Jenny Joseph is a middle aged woman writing about what she will be like in the future in her years of old age. Whiles Carol Ann Duffy is reminiscing about what it was like to be a child in primary school and the typical experiences in a primary school. The poet Carol Ann Duffy is writing about the past whereas Jenny Joseph is writing about the future.

" In Mrs. Tilscher's class" gives a clear message to show that when a person was in primary school, it was a place of fun and a place where protection from the real world is given. The poem "Warning" has a very different message that is about going against that certain stereotype. "In Mrs. Tilscher's class," it shows children growing from childhood into adolescence and becoming more mature. Whereas "Warning' the poem goes from being a mature middle aged adult to going to an immature and mischievous older age and having a second childhood "In Mrs. Tilscher's class", the children in the poem want to grow up however in "Warning" the people give the impression that they not want to grow up.

"In Mrs. Tilscher's class," used different poetic techniques namely metaphors, similes and personification, whereas "Warning" concentrates on the tone of the poem. "In Mrs. Tilscher's class" Carol Ann Duffy has used a simile "the classroom glowed like a sweetshop". This Simile gives a clear image of what the classroom was like and that the classroom was colourful like a sweetshop. Many children love to go to sweetshops. The class is being compared to that sweetshop and that the children in the poem love to go to school to be in the classroom.

Instead of using metaphors similes and personification, Jenny Joseph uses descriptive words, an example of this is "You can where terrible shirts and grow more fat," this gives the image that old people do not have to worry about their appearance and figure. The way Jenny Joseph has written this phrase was in a childlike way this helps in discovering what Jenny Joseph was trying to say.

"In Mrs. Tilscher's class" there is use of alliteration and onomatopoeia. An example when Carol Ann Duffy used alliteration is ' sexy sky' the effect is that we can hear the change in the children, in that the children are growing from childhood to adolescence, Carol Ann Duffy uses onomatopoeia 'jumping and croaking." Here the onomatopoeia helps the reader hear the sound of the children happily playing

Jenny Joseph uses alliteration in "Warning" "and Hoard pens ands pencils." The effect projected to the reader is that this alliteration gives a nice rhythm. Hoarding pencils and pens is a childish thing to do.

"In Mrs. Tilscher's class" there are four stanzas as the poem progresses the children in the poem become older, every different stanza is a different time of the school year. In the first stanza, it is the beginning of the school year. This gives the effect that the reader can imagine different times of the school year and how children grow accordingly. Jenny Joseph has mainly formed "Warning" in short sentences. The first and the last lines of the poem are very similar in content. This creates a type of cheekiness and fun to the poem. 'Warning' has a rhetorical question at the end of the last stanza. This also helps to create cheekiness and fun. "In Mrs. Tilschers class" a child from Mrs. Tilscher's class is reminiscing about the times when he was in primary school and childhood. He is speaking to the reader explaining what is like in Mrs. Tilschers class. The tone of the speakers voice is happy relaxed and fun. The tone in his voice changes at the end of the poem into a more serious affair. "The Sky split open into a thunderstorm", there is a change in the tone of the poet's voice that is mirrored by the weather this is called "pathetic fallacy".

"Warning" had a different narration in comparison to "In Mrs. Tilscher's class. In "Warning" a middle-aged woman is talking in first person to her family and friends, e.g., when " I am an old women." In the second stanza, she is talking in the second person to other middle aged people explaining to them what they can do when they are older, e.g., "You can wear." In the third stanza she is talking again in the first person, telling the middle aged people how they should act in their middle age, e.g. "But now we must." In the fourth stanza the poem stays in to first person. The tone of the voice is mischievous and rebellious. In the third stanza, the tone changes into a good and respectful middle-aged person.

My opinion of the poem "In Mrs. Tilscher's class" is that it was a good poem helping me remember my days at primary school and childhood. My opinion of the poem "Warning" is that the mood of showing rebelliousness and not following a stereotype is very true to life, I found this very interesting.

Please note that this sample paper on A comparison of "In Mrs. Tilscher's class" by Carol Ann Duffy and "Warning" by Jenny Joseph is for your review only. In order to eliminate any of the plagiarism issues, it is highly recommended that you do not use it for you own writing purposes. In case you experience difficulties with writing a well structured and accurately composed paper on A comparison of "In Mrs. Tilscher's class" by Carol Ann Duffy and "Warning" by Jenny Joseph, we are here to assist you. Oedipus is responsible for his own actions of committing parrincest and for killing Laius, which led to his own downfall from being King of Thebes. This downfall is due to his rashness, over-curiosity, and his disrespect for the god's predictions. However, he is not fully responsible for his actions, as there are other factors accountable for his downfall that he had no control over. The all-knowing gods had predicted his patricide and incest long before he committed them, and it was his parents' actions which resulted in him not knowing who his true parents are and hence in him committing those sins unknowingly.

In "Oedipus the King", Oedipus' rashness evidently plays a part in bringing about his downfall, as Teriesias only reviews the truth when Oedipus rashly insults him and accuses him of plotting with Creon. Teriesias knew that Oedipus' fall from stature would result if he reveals the truth, and hence is reluctant to tell it. However, Oedipus quickly mistakes Teriesias' attempt to save him as one of ill and as an attempt to save himself. He then rashly accuses Teriesias of first being the murderer, then of plotting with Creon to overthrow him from his stature of King. Teriesias is a priest of a god, and a very respectable person in the land, and normal reasoning would have shown that the prophet would not do those things. This rashness is also clearly seen as Oedipus contradicts himself by at first praising Teriesias for his knowledge and wisdom, then moments later insulting that same knowledge and wisdom, and then calling him names. As a result of all these accusations, Teriesias is forced to defend himself by revealing the truth. Hence it is Oedipus' rashness which help bring about his own downfall.

Oedipus is always curious about the truth, and this curiosity also is a factor in his downfall. When he lived in Corinth, and when someone told him that he wasn't the son of the people he thought were his parents, it was his curiosity that brought him to the Temple of Delphi. There he heard the prophecy about his patricide and incest, which led him to run away, and hence later to fulfill the prophecy. Many people also tries to stop him from finding out the truth; first Teriesias, then Jocasta when she realises the truth, and the shepherd. However, he ignores their advice, and stubbornly continues in his attempt to solve the mystery. Even when he finds out that he might be the murderer of Laius, he still presses forward to find the truth, not caring about what the consequences might be. This curiosity, which is at first to find the murderer of Laius, then to find out about his parentage, causes the truth to reveal, and hence set in motion Oedipus' own downfall.

Furthermore, when Oedipus hears about the all-knowing god Apollo's prediction of his fate, he immediately tries to run away from it, which consequently cause the prediction to occur. Oedipus is also very relieved when he finds out that that the man who he thinks is his father had passed away, as he thinks that it means the prophecy is no long valid. These things clearly shows that Oedipus believes that Apollo's prophecies can be thwart, that they will not always happen as he thinks that he can change them. This shows his disrespect for the gods as he believes that they are not really all-knowing. It is this disrespect which brought him to Thebes, and this disrespect which made him try and prevent the prophecy, which ironically causes him to fulfill it and bring out his own downfall.

Write my Essay on To what extent is Oedipus responsible for his own actions?

Nevertheless, it must be taken into account that there are other factors that are also responsible for Oedipus' downfall. Long before Oedipus had committed the sins that brought about his downfall, the all-knowing god Apollo had predicted it, and it is the revealing of this prophecy to mortal ears which brings about the events which leads to Oedipus' downfall. The prediction was also a prediction of Oedipus' fate, and hence his downfall is the result of following his fate, which he cannot escape. It is also Apollo who brought about the plague and pestilence onto the land of Thebes, which cause Oedipus to fulfill his duty as King and try to stop it. This then forces Oedipus to find out about his sins, and results in his own fall from stature as King.

Oedipus also commits the "incestuous sins" because he did not know who his true parents are. Oedipus had run away from Corinth when he heard about the prophecy about him committing those sins. However, it is the fact that he does not know who his true parents are which causes him to in fact fulfill the prophecy by killing his father and marrying his mother. Therefore, Oedipus' downfall must also be attributed to his parents, as they had caused him to mistake his true parentage by trying to get rid of him.

In conclusion, Oedipus is in fact mostly responsible for his actions of patricide and incest because of his rashness, over-curiosity and disrespect for the gods, which results in his own downfall from stature of King. Nevertheless, there are also other factors that are responsible. The god's actions and his true parent's actions, over which he has no control over, are also causes to his actions. Therefore, Oedipus is not fully responsible for the actions that led to his downfall from position as King and his position in the eyes of men.

Please note that this sample paper on To what extent is Oedipus responsible for his own actions? is for your review only. Atlantic Slave Trade

Effects of the Atlantic Slave Trade The changes in African life during the slave trade era form an important element in the economic and technological development of Africa. Although the Atlantic slave trade had a negative effect on both the economy and technology, it is important to understand that slavery was not a new concept to Africa. In fact, internal slavery existed in Africa for many years. Slaves included war captives, the kidnapped, adulterers, and other criminals and outcasts. However, the number of persons held in slavery in Africa, was very small, since no economic or social system had developed for exploiting them (Manning 7). The new system-Atlantic slave trade-became quite different from the early African slavery. The influence of the Atlantic slave trade brought radical changes to the economy of Africa. At the time of the Atlantic slave trade, Africa was an area that had far-flung interests based on agriculture, industry, and commerce (Curtin 54). Complex stratified societies based on settled village agriculture were developed throughout the continent. â€Essentially agricultural, the peoples of Africa displayed a remarkable degree of specialization within this ancient economic pursuit,” writes John Hope Franklin, the author of From Slavery to Freedom A History of African Americans (p. 18). In addition to agriculture, artistry was a significant area of economic community. Even less complex communities included some with various skills. Furthermore, the use of metals played an important role. Iron was developed very early in the economy of Africa; Africa exported iron for many years, and blacksmiths and other ironworkers were found in many parts of the continent. Africans also worked in silver, gold, copper, and bronze. Lastly, internal slave trade played a role in the economy. Slaves represented a small part of the total value of African exports (Klein 56). The tendency of communities to specialize in some phase of economic activity made it necessary that they maintain commercial contact with other communities and countries in order to secure the things that they did not produce (Hope 16). Some villages, for example, specialized in fishing, others concentrated on metallurgy, while others made weapons, utensils, and so on. Traders traveled from place to place to barter and to purchase. Upon returning they were laden with goods that they sold within their own community (Hope 17). As the Atlantic route expanded, accounting for nearly two thirds of all Africans leaving the continent, it created systems for the gruesome work of collecting and exporting slaves and brought the expansion of a system of slavery in Africa itself. The rising prices for slaves, steadily driven by increasing American demand, powerfully influenced local African developments where slave trade was well established. For example, in some cases such as Kingdom of the Kongo to the south of the Zaire or Congo River, slave trade was quickly organized from a region that had only limited slavery and became a steady exporter of slaves (Klein 58). Large-scale warfare, in which obtaining slaves for the Atlantic trade was a major theme, became more common. The effects of slave trade soon led to civil wars, kidnappings, and disruptions, which brought about the decline of the existing kingdoms on the one had and the rise of new but smaller ones on the other. Entire trading networks became intimately tied to the supply of slaves to the Atlantic economy. Certain regions found slave trade so attractive that they have up their interests in gold mining and trading goods, and turned to the profitable business of capturing and exporting of slaves. Agriculture also suffered as a result of the expansion of the slave trade. Various viable agricultural lands in the interior of many of the exporting regions in Africa were abandoned for the sake of a more profitable business As the result of slavery, the concept of a family, an important aspect of African life, changed. Most damaging effect of this transformation involved children. Because most of the captive slaves taken were male, women had to take on new tasks to sustain the economy, thus devoting less time to their families (Module ). The men who remained began to take on second and third wives, mostly to produce more children, a ready source for the slave market. As greed and insatiability for money grew, many women often had their children kidnapped and enslaved. Raising children became a business. As the result of the damaging changes brought to Africa by the Atlantic slave trade, the overall development of the economy and technology suffered. Without slave exports, Africa would have had fewer imported goods because many slaves were exchanged for various forms of money. In fact, the export of slaves was very profitable and it did bring wealth to the African sellers. However, very little of this wealth was invested in expanding African production and improving the economical and technological developments (Klein 67). As mentioned above, as the prices for slave grew, entire trading networks became tied to the supply of slaves. As a result, Africa did little to increase its economical and technological development beyond slave trade. By the end of the nineteenth century nearly five or six million persons were held in slavery on the African continent (Manning 6). Although internal slavery existed on the continent prior to the Atlantic slave trade, African slavery had little if any effect on the economy. As explained throughout the paper, the expansion of the Atlantic slave trade brought radical changes to the economy of Africa. These changes played a major role in the development of the economy and technology of the continent.

Everyone hopes to have a good health, but not everyone understand the importance of nutritional foods to our health. Appropriate nutrition is a necessary condition to maintain a good health. In our daily life, the main source of nutrition comes from variety of foods we eat. Health starts with nutritional foods. It is the intention of this article to help you to have appropriate nutritional foods by introducing some basic knowledge of the relationships between nutrition and health, and nutrients foods.

Nutrients are necessary for human bodies to maintain energy to move, and generate chemical substances such as enzymes for metabolic activities. The nutrients that are essential to human bodies may be categorized into three types. The first category includes carbohydrates, fats, and proteins. They are the primary source of energy. Carbohydrates are the principal dietary source of energy. Fats supply energy and essential fatty acids, and they help absorb the fat-soluble vitamins. However, some kinds of fat, especially saturated fats, increase the risk for coronary heart disease by raising the blood cholesterol. ¡° Proteins are polymers of amino acids that are needed for synthesis of body proteins in muscle, organs, bone and skin, and for synthesis of enzymes, certain hormones, antibodies and a host of specialized products¡± (¡°Human amino acid requirements can the controversy be resolved¡±17). The second category includes various kinds of vitamins, such as A, B-1, B-6, C, D, E, biotin, choline, folate, and thiamin. They play a wide variety of roles in making our bodies work normally. For example, vitamin A is important to vision, vitamin C is important to the prevention of certain cancers and cardiovascular diseases, vitamin D is important to the absorption of calcium, vitamin E has antioxidant properties, etc. The third category includes various kinds of minerals, such as calcium, iron, magnesium, iodine, fluoride, sodium, and zinc. Appropriate amounts of minerals are very important to our health. For example, calcium is essential for healthy bones; iron is an essential nutrient that carries oxygen, fluoride is important to healthy teeth, etc.

Healthy foods are the best source of nutrients. All of the nutrients are available from foods. ¡° Carbohydrates are abundant in present in grains and potatoes. Unsaturated fats occur in vegetable oils, most nuts, olives, avocados, and fatty fish like salmon¡± (¡°Human amino acid requirements can the controversy be resolved¡±0). Proteins are available from most foods, among which meat, milk, eggs are considered to be excellent in both protein quantity and quality. Vitamins exist in vegetables, fruits, animal products, and fortified foods. For examples, vitamin C is abundant in citrus fruits, berries, melons, tomatoes, green peppers, and leafy green vegetable. Minerals are mostly available from meat, poultry and fish. For example, red meat is a rich source of iron that is well absorbed. Besides, there are other sources containing noticeable amounts of some nutrients. For example, fortified milk is often an excellent resource of vitamin D and calcium; tofu is probably the most preferred resource of protein and calcium for many people.

Although foods can provide the nutrients to our bodies, not all of them are healthy, and some are even harmful. In recent years, people have realized more and more the harmfulness of saturated fat, addictives, and some bad eating habits. Foods high in saturated fats tend to raise blood cholesterol. These foods include high-fat dairy products (like cheese, whole milk, cream, butter, and regular ice cream), fatty fresh and processed meats, the skin and fat of poultry, lard, palm oil, and coconut oil. Many drinks contain addictives. Many people like soda drinking, but they rarely know what additives added in the drinking. The artificial sweeteners (aspartame) are unsafe additives are used in many diet beverages. These additives are very harmful to our bodies. ¡°Some scientists also believe that aspartame can cause problems with brain function and behavior changes in people who consume it. Some people who have consumed aspartame have reported dizziness, headaches, and even seizures¡± (¡°The story on Food Additives¡±17). Bad eating habit is another enemy of health. For example, western cultures have sky-high rates of heart disease, cancer, stroke, diabetes, etc. With today¡¯s fast lifestyle, people eat more fast food than ever before. There are many side effects related to this popular eating habit, most of which are damaging to our health and personal care. ¡°Eating fast food regularly may cause our bodies to be deficient in the vitamins and minerals we need maintain good health; also, eating fast food can be very addictive, and people accustomed to it rarely change their eating habits¡±(¡°The Negative Sides of Fast Food¡±18).

Otherwise, we may suffer various diseases such as cancer, tumor, headaches, and even seizures. ¡° Fortunately, people are more aware then ever of the dangerous of pesticide residues on fruits and vegetables, and of additives in our processed foods. There is intense pressure on the federal government to ban unsafe substances. But it is also our responsibility as consumers to learn how to eat safe and healthy food for long and healthy lives¡± (The Story on Food Additives¡± 17).

Since the discovery of the DNA molecule in 15, scientists have been working to understand how it works and which segments influence which parts or functions of the body. The Human Genome Project, begun in October 10, hopes to identify these segments. Once the "normal" genetic sequences are identified, scientists work to find mutations that result in genetic disorders. A number of these mutations have been found and tests are being developed to help identify individuals carrying these mutations. This new technology is bringing with it a host of new legal and ethical dilemmas. These issues include potential discrimination, rights to privacy, and issues involving the parent/child relationship. At present, most genetic testing will not improve the quality of life and may result in harm.

For now, genetic testing can be used to help diagnose certain diseases, like Huntington's disease and Cystic fibrosis, but in most cases there is no cure available and little that can be done to treat these diseases. Genetic testing is also used in criminal investigations. When it helps to identify a rapist or murderer, that is a benefit to society, but when testing is forced on a large group of innocent people to try to identify the criminal among them, it violates the right to privacy of the many innocent people in the group. When genetic testing can lead to a cure, or be used to identify the guilty without invading the privacy of the innocent, then it can be used effectively. Until then, genetic testing should only be used with utmost caution.

Genetic testing can lead to discrimination. Insurance companies hope to use the results of genetic tests to categorize people based on their risk of developing a disease. This would result in some people having to pay high premiums, or being denied coverage entirely, based on information that may never come to pass and supposed risk factors that they have no control over. In business, companies could use this information to deny employment and in fact has. The American Management Association conducted a survey in 17 that found that 6 to 10 percent of the 6,000 companies in their sample used genetic testing for employment purposes. There are also over 00 cases documented by the Council for Responsible Genetics where either insurance or jobs were denied to healthy people based on the outcome of genetic tests (National Commission).

Order custom research paper on Essay opposing genetic testing

Besides discrimination, there are also privacy issues that relate to genetic testing. There is the issue of doctor/patient confidentiality. Is a doctor obligated to inform a patient's family if a serious genetic disorder is found, so that other at risk members can be tested? Or should he respect the patient's right to privacy and keep the information confidential? This is mainly an ethical question, but it also has legal ramifications since the doctor/patient relationship is regulated by a code of conduct (Foubister). Another issue of privacy is in law enforcement. Several states currently allow or even mandate genetic testing for all people arrested for crimes, including juvenile offenders, regardless of whether or not there is a conviction in the case. Often times the blood samples themselves are stored and not just the identifying information, which means that others have access to more than just the identifying factors. There are also state statutes that allow the samples to be used in other ways, without the individual's consent (National Commission). These privacy issues must be addressed.

Parenting issues arise out of some aspects of genetic testing. Prenatal testing is a growing trend that brings with it several difficult ethical situations. There is the dilemma of whether or not to bring a baby into the world that may have serious medical problems either from the start, or sometime down the road. For those who believe that life begins at conception, the decision to end a pregnancy is equal to murder, but there have been cases where health insurers have refused to cover the medical needs of such a child, if he or she is brought into the world. For example, there was a case where an HMO told a woman whose unborn child tested positive for cystic fibrosis, that it would pay for an abortion, but if the baby was born it would not be covered under the family's medical plan (Bereano). Whether or not to test an older child for certain genetic disorders is another sometimes difficult parenting decision. Requesting a child to be tested for adult onset diseases can have a variety of often-overlooked repercussions. Children are often unprepared to face or understand the results of such tests. They may not understand the difference between a risk and a certainty. Their self-esteem can be affected at a critical time in their emotional development. It may also alter the way the child is treated by other siblings or adults who see them as being more vulnerable or fragile. These are some serious things to consider before undergoing genetic testing (Points to Consider).

Overall, genetic testing poses some serious risks. There need to be laws put into place to hinder discrimination by insurance or in employment. The doctor/patient relationship needs some new guidelines that address the broader concerns of other family members at risk, yet preserves the patient's right to privacy. The issue of how and when genetic information can be collected for law enforcement and how it is to be stored must be addressed. Better counseling of parents that respects both the parent's beliefs and the child's needs is needed. Until these issues are addressed genetic testing poses too many risks to be useful for the majority of people.

Please note that this sample paper on Essay opposing genetic testing is for your review only. In order to eliminate any of the plagiarism issues, it is highly recommended that you do not use it for you own writing purposes. In case you experience difficulties with writing a well structured and accurately composed paper on Essay opposing genetic testing, we are here to assist you. Artist and Repertoire Representative

I think the career best suited for me would be an artist and repertoire representative because I love music but I also have no musical ability. Being and A and R rep would keep me around what I love. I could handle the amount of responsibilities that comes with the job and could also handle everything involved.

Being and Artist and Repertoire representative is a career I could do well in because I know what to listen for and if a person or group of people has potential. I follow orders when they are given and also work well with other people. I have listening skills, learning skills, presentation skills, and also people skills.

Most positions as an A and R rep require university degrees and several years of experience. Colleges and Universities offer degree programs in recorded music production, and some reps obtain a degree in music. Also, courses in mass media, business administration, and music are very beneficial. Those entering the career must have knowledge of sales, accounting, the legal aspects of production, and also the recording industry in general.

My work environment as and artist and repertoire representative would probably be a lot of different places. For instance, going to check out new talent, the office listening to tapes, and also the recording studio when I have found a band with some talent. So my work environment wouldn't necessarily be clean or dirty, fancy or plain.

The hours I would have to work as an A and R rep would be relatively long, considering it would not always be office hours. On top of working in the building, I would have to go check out new bands when hints are handed to me. That means visiting nightclubs, private concerts, and the band's practice (wherever that may be).

I will have many responsibilities as an artist and repertoire representative. I will have to mounds of demo tapes, attend recording sessions, make sure the record companies marketing plan fits the artist, also have to deal with managers, lawyers, and booking agents. I would have to be everywhere on time as I will have many appointments with those people. I will also have to be a person the band can relate to, and handle they're problems as well.

My personality fits into what is required as an A and R rep. I am an extrovert, I love being with other people, and I would enjoy an exciting lifestyle. To be and A and R rep I think you should be able to say what you think and feel about the music. My personality is outgoing, I say what I mean and I mean what I say, I have fun, I work hard, and I follow orders.

As far as where I would have to work goes, I think I could probably work anywhere; there is always talent in unexpected places. So the location I would be would be anywhere I needed to be. As an A and R rep I would also do a lot of traveling. I would most likely be where I had to be to support my family with what they need.

I don't know exactly how plentiful the Artist and Repertoire rep positions are right now, however there is probably a lot considering all the new bands who are looking for small independent representation companies. When I graduate college, and am ready to get a job, I believe positions in that field will be plentiful. The reason I think that is because there is more types of music being developed every year, such as mixtures of two kinds of music, so a lot more bands and solo artists will be discovered.

Pay as and A and R rep can vary. According to an article published in iVillage, A and R reps start out in the business earning below $0,00 a year. They earn between $40,000 and $50,000 after years of experience. As the person gets established within a company and the felid, the jump in salary can be significant. I rated money as one of the top five must-haves but as long as I have enough money to stay off the streets, I'll survive. I would rather get low pay in a career that I love than high pay when I'm unhappy.

Rewards on the job would be doing something I love, getting some recognition, and making a difference in a few people's lives. To see a band I am representing make it would be rewarding. Having fun, helping others, being creative, working with and meeting interesting people, and having something to do with the production of good music would be an awesome reward for me. I'm not very high maintenance, I could be very happy with simple things.

If a person doesn't love music, and cant handle artists or long hours, they shouldn't be an A and R rep. According to Scott Patterson, of Independent A and R Inc., there are pros and cons to the work. "The pros are great parties and lots of traveling. The cons are low pay to start, and long hours." I definitely think that is the kind of job for me.

In conclusion, being and Artist and Repertoire representative would be a great career for me. Every aspect of the job fits me pretty well. I could definitely handle the responsibilities and get used to the lifestyle. Having no musical ability myself, being an A and R rep would get me involved in what interests and intrigues me.

One of the most common disorders of men in the United States is erectile dysfunction. Impotence or erectile dysfunction (ED) is the inability to attain an erection that is rigid enough for sexual penetration. Many people have confused Impotence with a loss of sexual urges or the absence of orgasms, but these disorders don't necessarily imply that the man can't get an erection. In the United States, between 10 and 0 million men suffer from some type of erectile dysfunction. This occurrence increases with age. Less than one percent of men under age 0 have ED, but between the ages of 40 and 70, nearly half of all men have some type of erection disorder.

There are various causes of impotence. In primary impotence, the penis itself is faulty, but in secondary impotence, it may be caused by psychological problems and side effects from drugs. Some psychological problems with erections may be a lack of confidence, loss of attraction to his mate, or maybe just from a feeling of depression. During a normal functioning erection, the brain sends a message to the corpus cavernosum to restrict the exporting of blood and to increase the import of blood into the penis. This causes the penis to fill up with blood and an erection occurs until the sensation is over. When erectile dysfunction is apparent, these vessels are not properly filling with blood. This is usually because the vessels are not restricting enough blood. The erect penis needs about 5 to 6 times the normal amount of blood to reach complete erectness. Many men with this disorder are ashamed to be impotent, but it is not uncommon, especially with certain lifestyles. Erectile dysfunction can be associated with any disease that affects the health of the blood vessels (arteries and veins) such as diabetes, heart disease, and high blood pressure. Smoking, excessive alcohol consumption, drug use, and stress can also add to the chances of having erectile dysfunction. Men have been trying to deal with ED for several years but not until about the 180's did anyone attempt to fix the problem. Some have tried inserting a prosthesis rod into the penis to have a semi rigid erection, but this was permanently erect which can obviously cause some social problems. Later, a man discovered a drug that could be injected into the corpus cavernosum that would cause it to function properly for about an hour, but most men thought this was rather painful and not worth the soreness. Until recently, nothing could be done to correct erectile dysfunction.

In 18, the Food and Drug Administration approved the use of Sildenafil. This oral drug is marketed under the brand name Viagra. Viagra works by helping the arteries in the penis expand while the veins contract, which restricts the blood flow out of the penis. With more blood flowing in and less flowing out, it enlarges, resulting in an erection. Since its discovery, Viagra has gained popularity because of its painless and effective method for treating impotence. Currently, Viagra is the #1 prescribed treatment for erectile dysfunction. In the United States, nearly 10 million men have tried Viagra. With a 100-mg pill, about 8% of the men claim to experience improved erections. Viagra helps in most men regardless of how long they have had ED, how severe it is, or how old the patient is. Viagra is still rated one of the most effective methods for treating erectile dysfunction.

Sometimes, the information that men first discover about a product is what they base their opinion on. Viagra may sound like a wonder drug, but every medication must have its negatives. What people don't know is that the 8% success rate is only based on the few patients that actually qualify to use Viagra. In order to use Viagra, a doctor should approve the patient first. If the patient has ever had any heart, kidney, liver, or blood problems, a stroke, unusual blood pressure, or a deformed penis syndrome called Peyronie's disease, they are usually not prescribed to use Viagra. The patients that are approved for Viagra are basically narrowed down to only men that are in peak condition and have always been in a healthy state. The doctors limit the prescriptions to these "healthy" men simply because they are the only ones who can handle the intense side effects. Some of the listed effects of Viagra are headache, flushing of the face, an upset stomach, changes in color vision, sensitive eyes, and blurred vision. Those are the most common side effects that patients encounter while taking Viagra. Less common, but more severe side effects include heart attack, stroke, irregular heartbeats, and even death has been reported in men taking Viagra. Occasionally, men encounter an erection that lasts several hours and can cause permanent damage to the penis if it's not dealt with immediately. Sometimes, seeing the side effects of a drug can form a completely different perspective on what it does for the patient.

Buy Viagra term paper

When comparing the possible side effects of Viagra to a mere erection, it doesn't seem like it's worth the risk. If a man cares more about sexual intercourse than he does about his life and his health, it is probably an easy decision for him; otherwise, it may take time for him to weigh out the pros and cons of taking Viagra. If a man is encountered with erectile dysfunction, he may decide to try other, healthier, methods such as exercising. Exercising can help to increase a man's physical, as well as his moral level, which may possibly be the problem. Temporarily fixing the problem, by taking Viagra, will only work for a couple hours and may not truly fix the problem. Using a medication to hide health issues may simply be avoiding his lack of health responsibilities. In this case, a man is in no condition to be taking Viagra. Before a man takes Viagra, he should first determine if it's the only solution, and if it is, he should really decide if it's worth the risk.

Lyme Disease

Lyme disease is a tick-borne systemic infection cause by a spiral organism, Borrelia burgdorferi, characterized by neurologic, joint, and cardiac manifestations. Lyme disease is carried by a tiny tick. It begins with a bite and a rash that can be so slight, you may not even notice. However the consequences can be serious, sometimes even fatal. Lyme disease can create symptoms that mimic a wide variety of other diseases, ranging from juvenile arthritis to multiple sclerosis to Alzheimer's disease.

The birth of Lyme disease started in Lyme, Connecticut. The disease was found in the 160's. Polly Murray moved to Lyme, Connecticut in 15 with her four children. Within a few years of living in Lyme she began having periodic flu-like illnesses, headaches, and odd rashes. When she first went to the doctor they thought she had rheumatic fever and the doctors gave her penicillin. This helped for a little while but the symptoms returned in the spring and summer. In the early 170's Murray asked her doctor if this illness could be a delayed reaction to a tick bite, because she knew she had been bitten by ticks over the years. The doctor said no because she had no symptoms of Rocky Mountain spotted fever and in those days that was the only disease people thought was caused by ticks. Soon kids all over her neighborhood were coming down with the same symptoms. Murray kept at it and told everyone about the problems she had and had no answers for them. Later research found that her problems came from a tick called a Ixodes dammini tick.

Symptoms of Lyme disease can be highly variable from one person to another and also can vary dramatically over time in one person. Although there is a classic pattern of illnesses in Lyme disease, it is not expressed in nearly half of all patients. This can make spotting the disease extraordinary difficult and living with it frustrating and painful. The disease progresses in three stages. In the first stage the symptom most commonly experienced by people with Lyme disease is a distinctive rash. This symptom is only experienced with about 60% of patients with Lyme disease. This rash is called EMC, which means a "red, chronic, migrating rash." It is most likely to appear a week after the tick bite but may occur from two to thirty days after such a bite. if not treated the rash will disappear on its own, usually within about three weeks. Along with the rash, or often in its absence, the patient often experiences a flu-like illness. About 60 to 80 percent of those who have the rash will experience such flu-like symptoms simultaneously. The symptoms may include headache, fever, chills, aching muscles, stiff neck, loss of appetite, sore throat, nausea, and vomiting. Months later the second stage will kick in which includes various neurologic, cardiac, and joint manifestations. The third stage which eventually occurs in some untreated patients, is characterized by chronic arthritis and various neurologic problems. Some patients do not experience any of these symptom. In these cases doctors wonder if the patients will ever experience any symptoms of Lyme disease.

Cheap Custom Essays on Lyme disease

One of the greatest problems surrounding medical care for Lyme disease is the problem of diagnosis. Diagnostic tests are not likely to be done unless the physician has what is known as high index of suspicion of the disease, which means that he or she is ever on the lookout for it. Even when Lyme disease is suspected, currently available diagnostic tests often yield false negative results and are believed to identify correctly only about half of all confirmed cases, especially early in the disease. If not diagnosed and treated promptly, the disease may seem to disappear only to resurface months or years later. The diagnostic blood test currently available commercially for Lyme disease does not actually look for Borrelia burgdorferi but the spirochete that causes the disease. The two general blood test used an immunofluorescence test and an ELISA. Two other tests are used in research laboratories. One is the cell test and the other actually seeks the spirochete. Many physicians are pinning their hopes on a new test for Lyme disease now under development. It looks neither for the spirochete itself nor for the antibodies. Rather, it seeks out spirochete antigens in blood or urine and would therefore allow the disease to be diagnosed even before antibodies formed.

Depending on the individual patient, and one of several drugs antibiotics may be used, usually starting with oral drugs, pills, given for at least ten to fourteen days. When the patient has Lyme disease there are many medications available. In adults Tetracycline, 500 milligrams by mouth four times a day or Phenoxymethyl penicillin, 500 milligrams by mouth four times a day. In children age eight and older Tetracycline, 1.5 milligrams per kilogram of body weight, by mouth every six hours (up to two grams per day) or Phenoxymethyl penicillin, 1.5 milligrams per kilogram of body weight, by mouth every six hours (up to two grams per day). In children under eight years of age Erythromycin, 1.5 milligrams per kilogram of body weight, by mouth every six hours (up to two grams per day).

If you have Lyme disease once in your life you should never forget it. Whenever you have new symptoms in the future, even symptoms that seem totally unrelated, and you see a physician, be sure to give the doctor a complete medical history, including your bout with Lyme disease. Our experience with Lyme disease is too short of duration to know for sure what lies ahead. Once cured you may never have new symptoms, but then again, you may. Only the collective experience of patients and physicians working together with full knowledge will eventually yield all the answers.

Calpurnia

Calpurnia is the black maid to the Finch's in Harper Lee's novel "To Kill A Mockingbird." She is treated by the Finch's as if she were a Finch as they see her as a member of their family. She is a friendly person whom is helpful and caring to the entire Finch family. Calpurnia is seen by the reader as almost being a white person, even though her skin is black and she comes from a black family and background.

Calpurnia has spent "all her days working for the Finch's" and she does her work in a happy yet serious way. She is happy to care for and teach the Finch's as she feels they too care and teach her. It appears to the reader that Calpurnia almost lives a double life; a white family member whilst working and a black woman at her home. She is seen by the reader to be clever and well educated, a thing that most black people of that time were not. Calpurnia is also seen to be quite strict and firm with the children, even though she is in actual fact being loving and compassionate. Even though Calpurnia lives half her life as a white, she still attends black church and has a close bond with all the blacks in the community.

There are many reasons Harper Lee chose to put Calpurnia in the novel and position her in the way she did. Harper Lee wanted the reader to see how Calpurnia interacted with both whites and blacks in a similar manner. By having Calpurnia as the Finch's maid, Harper Lee effectively shows the reader that the Finch family are completely un-racist, unlike many of Maycomb's residents. Another reason why Harper Lee positioned Calpurnia as the Finch's maid was to show how children inherit their parent's views and beliefs. This is seen by the way Scout and Jem both treat Calpurnia as an equal, just like their father Atticus does.

The reader sees Calpurnia care for the Finch children in two different ways; as their housekeeper and as a "member of the family." Calpurnia is hired by the Finch's to cook, clean and generally take care of the Finch's and the Finch household. The reader knows Calpurnia grew up on Finch landing so her loyalty to the Finch's is clearly understood by the reader.

The reader sees how Calpurnia loves the Finch's as if they were her own flesh and blood and is referred to by them as a "member of the family." She is treated as an equal by the Finch's. This is seen by the reader in the way Calpurnia address' the Finch's on a first name basis and the way they do the same with her. It is also seen by the strong loyalties and relationship Calpurnia has with the Finch's. Calpurnia also seen by the reader to act as Jem and Scout's mother. She looks out and watches over them. The reader can tell she feels like the mother of the Finch children in the way she talks about not wanting "anybody to say I don't look after my children."

The Finch family see and regard Calpurnia as a "member of the family." The reader knows that Calpurnia grew up with Atticus on Finch landing so it appears obvious why they share such a close bond. This bond is responsible for Calpurnia being treated as an equal member of the family. Calpurnia is treated exactly like a Finch family member by the Finch's and she is included in all family discussions and decisions. When Aunt Alexandra tries to dismiss Calpurnia, Atticus shows his loyalty to Calpurnia by saying "Anything fit to say at the table is fit to say in front of Calpurnia." This just shows that Atticus is siding with Calpurnia over his own flesh and blood as he feels Calpurnia is just as much his sister as Aunt Alexandra is.

Calpurnia is seen as both a "member of the Finch family" and the "mother of the household." She is considered by all Finch's to be a relative; a sister to Atticus and a mother to Scout and Jem. The children obey Calpurnia as they know and respect her decisions. The Finch children will also often consult Calpurnia on their ideas and questions as she listens carefully and offers useful suggestions to them. Calpurnia is cared about like she was truly part of the family as in the Finch's eyes, she is. In return, Calpurnia shows them the same love and respect that they she her.

The Finch family didn't instantly respond to Calpurnia in the way they were seen to in the novel. It took time for them to trust and respect Calpurnia. The reader knows the Finch family have know Calpurnia a long time as she "grew up on Finch landing" and has "spent all [her] days working for the Finch family." Over time, the reader presumes that a strong bond was made between the Finch's and Calpurnia, resulting in an everlasting relationship where she is seen as a "member of the family." The Finch family always try to look through Calpurnia's point of view before judging her. By doing this, the Finch family are able to look past Calpurnia's differences and see that she is like them; a human.

Calpurnia is an essential character in the novel "To Kill a Mockingbird." She is the perfect black character to have as she relates well to the Finch's and they relate well to her. She shares a bond with the Finch's which is deeper than race, skin colour, community views and, in some cases, flesh and blood. Calpurnia shows the reader that back then, not all white people were racist towards the blacks and not all blacks were as uneducated and as inhumane as people of that era thought.

Think five to ten years down the track, who will play a vital role in your life? Will you still be friends with the ones you call friends now? What really is the definition of true friendship? And how do Charlie and Slade portray this, in the film Scent of a Woman by Martin Brest? Furthermore, why is friendship so important in society? Why does it have such a big impact on our lives? I believe it gives us security and a feeling of wanting to be needed, but is that all we really need?

Charlie and Slade are two men, polar opposites it would seem, each struggling with life choices. One is plagued with a moral crisis while the other is a walking crisis, yet these two seem to find in each other the strength to face their particular problems.

Charlie Simms is a seventeen-year-old boy, who goes to a private, rich boy's New Hampshire boarding school, and is on a full scholarship. He crosses paths with Lieutenant Colonel Slade, an obnoxious retired colonel with a very limited appreciation of women. He intensely despises himself, and is undergoing a rapid physical deterioration as he mentally contemplates his forthcoming death. The link between the mind and the body is clear as he programs his body to slow down it's functioning in preparation for its final demise.

Cheap custom writing service can write essays on Scent of A Women (Film) - Theme - Friendship

Charlie first thought of Slade as a misanthrope, a person who dislikes people in general. But later discovers that Slade and his cross roads were destined to meet each other.

"Two may talk together under the same roof for many years, yet may not really meet; and two others at first speech are old friends." I believe this is a good saying for the movie Scent of a Woman, because it shows the relationship between Charlie's School friends with Charlie himself, and Slade with Charlie.

However, is the relationship between Charlie and Slade a true friendship? I believe true friendship is extremely rare, even though most of us will make lots of friends throughout out lifetimes; very few will be true friends. Well, in the movie Scent of a Woman, Charlie Simms, after taking a job for babysitting a blind man, meets maybe his first true friend. Lieutenant Colonel Slade, even though he may not realise it at first, Charlie soon finds out that they are two lost friends both with problems that they can both conquer if they work together.

The more time these two spend together enjoying fine clothes, fine dining, the best accommodations, a tango with a beautiful woman, a ride in a ten thousand dollar sports car, they discover other treasures of life, which are being a friend, being needed and being able to make a difference in someone elses life, no matter how hard it is to do. They wind up doing something phenomenal for each other, giving each of them a life-changing experience.

Slade changes his attitude and finds purpose to his subsistence, rather than death being something separate and apart from life, it is very much a part of it. Rather than the fear of death, it is more often the fear of life that determines our existence. By brutally facing death, he is able to begin to confront his fear of life. Meanwhile Charlie learns that there is more than a front cover on a book. First impressions of Slade through Charlie's eyes were to be forgotten. Charlie now sees Slade as a changed man, as well as himself, both clearly for the better.

Although, unlike the film, is friendship in society needed? Yes, the communication of emotion and ideas is vital to the progress of society. Friendships are at the core of interaction throughout society. Friendships are established on the basis of common interests and desires, augmented through the exchange of information and emotions. Friendships help to alleviate pain and suffering and to spread joyful emotions. Friendships, however, often end in disaster when they are terminated. Nevertheless, friendships play an essential role in society and communication, effectively propelling society forward.

But I have come to realise there is no such thing as always in a friendship and will not be there forever. People change and feelings towards each other change and what was said earlier meant nothing because everything was new and that was the feeling at the moment. I am realising that people say one thing and even though they were serious and sincere with their feelings but what they meant will disappear slowly and they will eventually do what they want and will not care about your feelings or how it will affect you.

People like this will always look out for who is most important to them and that is themselves. They are only concern for their own happiness and what makes them feel good and they do this at the expense of others. In todays world of the Internet, friendship is just a brief moment in time and does not last that long. When I was growing up, all I dreamed of was having a friend that would be there always when I needed them, and that it would last a life time. But I soon learnt that was not to be the case in any friendships that I have had ever had.

Friendship is crucial in the film Scent of a Woman because it shows a true understanding of how two polar opposite actually do attract, and now, the bond between them is currently stronger than ever. Friendship is also a fundamental part of society; it is the core of interaction, but even though your feelings towards friends change, there is no reason why you can't change with them. Friendship is an ever-changing system. You never quite know who you might cross roads with next.

To find a friend, one must close one eye. To keep him--two

--Norman Douglas

There are a variety of differences and similarities within the beliefs of those who are atheist and those that are Christian in regards to the origins of the universe and life after the physical death.

Atheism is not a religion. It is the denial of the existence of God or gods. It includes both the rejection of any specific belief in God or gods, and the view that the rational approach to claims about divine existence is one of sceptism. Justification of atheism is often made on the grounds that some branch of science or psychology has rendered belief in God or gods as unnecessary, or that observed proof of the religious belief is not there.

Christianity is a community, a way of life, a system of belief, a liturgical observance, a tradition- Christianity is all of these and more. It is the belief in one God and the son of God Jesus Christ who is the central figure of Christianity according to the bible.

Atheist do not believe one created that universe. Instead they support scientific theories regarding the creation of the universe. The Big Bang Theory and evolution assume that natural processes evolved the earth. They believe Evolution occurs in a gene pool over the course of generations. As a result, individual organisms do not evolve, in the sense of biological evolution. Evolutionary changes are those, which affect distinct populations of organisms, which constitute a gene pool. If these changes are heritable and passed along, it can be said that this population has evolved.

Write my Essay on Compare and Contrast the difference in beliefs between atheism as a non-religious perspective and one religious tradition of your choice in relation to the origins of the universe and life after Physical death. for me

However the Christian religious tradition believe that God created the world. This is seen in the bible in the fist chapter of Genesis as it states that God created the world in 7 days. Some Christians do not take this story literally, although there are some that do. Similarly both Atheists and Christians is believe in evolution. Some may believe that it is not only a scientific theory but has take place naturally, but only after God created the world. Therefore Christians believe that evolution has nothing whatsoever to do with the origins of life - evolution is about the changes that happen when life exists and makes no claims about where life may or my not have come from.

The Afterlife is an area of human consciousness we all enter upon leaving the physical world at physical death. For the entire existence of mankind what happens after death?

In the Christian religion it is believed that there does exist life after death. The argument to support it being that after Jesus died he rose from the dead, proving that the soul is not destroyed after death. All of the Christian teachings and beliefs come from the bible; and in the Bible it states For God loved the world so much that he gave his only Son so that anyone who believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. (John 16)

Those who hold to the worldview of atheism believe that, at death, one ceases to exist. There is no afterlife or eternal soul that continues to exist. All there is to look forward to is our inevitable death. Scientists tell us that the universe is expanding, growing farther and farther apart. As it does, its energy is being used up, and eventually the stars will burn out and all matter will collapse into dead stars and black holes. It is in the face of this future that the atheist must seek to find meaning and purpose for his own existence in this universe.

However, the Bible gives us a unique, contrasting view of death. Scripture makes it clear in Hebrews 7,

"…Man is destined to die once and after that to face judgment.."

The Bible makes it clear that once our life here on earth is done, we will stand before God to receive our destiny, either eternal life with Him, or the second death in separation from Him.

In human history, only Jesus has conquered sin and death through His resurrection. For Christians, death is not something we fear. Instead, at death we arrive home in heaven.

In conlclusion It is seen that there are significant differences but also similarities within the beliefs of those who are atheist and those that are Christian in relation to the origins of the universe and life after the physical death.
