The stationmaster came out of his little brick station as the train arrived and came to a stop. The piccanins (black children; a very offensive term in the U.S but widely used in South Africa) and animals, dogs and chickens, ran out to the train stop trying to sell their goods to the people on the train. The dogs went and sat, quite still, under the dining car, where the train exhausted the smell of meat cooking with onion. An old man smiled, looking at the creatures he held in his hand. Look, said the young husband on the train, his wife wanted to buy the wooden lion with it beautiful mane and black tongue. They asked how much it was from the train. He told them the price and she said it was too expensive and leaves to sit down. The husband bargains with the man to sell it to him for one-and-six (one shilling and sixpence, a sum of money in the local currency). The old native turned away, still keeping an eye on the young man. The train began to leave, and they still have not settled their bargain. But as the train starts to leave the station, the old man accepts the offer and sells the lion for one-and-six. The young man swung from the corridor, breathless. "So there's your lion", he said to his wife. She yells at him for buying the lion for such a low price and waiting for the old man to lower the price and argues with her husband. He stands there next to her in disbelief because there she was complaining about how cheap he bought it for when she had complained about how expensive it was in the beginning. She throws the lion on the seat, then sat down in the corner. He slumped in his hands and starred out of the window. The Piccanins waved to the train as it slowly disappeared.
