The setting of the play Hamlet is significant to the movement of the plot. It helps to

explain the storyline of the play and gives the reader insight into why characters act the

way that they do.

The main setting of the play is in Elsinore castle in Denmark. Many of the play's

actions take place there and different rooms and objects inside of the castle are used to

explain part of the story. For example, the tapestry in the castle was a popular spying

place for many of the characters, Polonius in particular. Hiding behind this tapestry also

led to his mistaken identity and death. Polonius was almost like the tapestry as well. He

used it to hide himself like his facade hid his true emotions. He seemed like a totally

different person on the outside if you just looked at him. But when you actually took a

look at him, or pulled away the tapestry, you saw that he was just an extremely talkative,

insecure man.

The time period of the play also explains why characters acted the way that they

did. The most obvious of these actions was when Gertrude married Claudius, her brother

in law. During the time of the play, it was almost common for this to happen because the

women needed someone to be with. Hamlet wasn't happy with this because of the short

time between his father's death and his mother's remarriage. He believed that there should

be a grieving period before his mother remarried and this was part of the reason that he

started to act "crazy."

Finally, the events that were going on around the main setting were significant to

the storyline. The war that was going on with Norway was a major issue in Denmark.

King Hamlet killed the king of Norway, Fortinbras, which led to problems in the state of

Denmark. Because of this death, Denmark

Eve and Adam recount their first encounter both of which are similar but are also marked with disparity. The first of such differences is in that Eve has seen her reflection and therefore knows what she looks like. Adam on the other hand does not indicate that he has seen his own reflection but sees Himself as a reflection of his maker, God. It would appear that Eve has knowledge of her physical appearance and Adam does not, but it would also appear that this is the only knowledge that she possesses that Adam does not.

Eve awakens, "wondering where and what I was, whence thither brought, and how," (451-45). Adam however, knew that she was in the Garden with him, that "Woman is her name," (46), and that she was, "Bone of my bone, flesh of my flesh, myself before me . . . of man extracted," (45-47). According to her account, Eve is oblivious to the fact that her place is with Adam as she turns after seeing him, to return to the image that she saw in the lake (480), while again, Adam knows that God formed her from his rib to be his mate.

This first encounter shows the inequality of Adam and Eve as Eve herself concedes that Adam is her, " Guide and head," (44-44). She acknowledges that he came first but more importantly that she is nothing without him " without whom am to no end," (441-44). Eve "yielded" (48) to Adam as he led her to their "nuptial bowr" and he himself says that she was compliant (50). So Eve seems to already know that she is to be subservient to Adam.

Write your Paradise Lost research paper

One crucial difference separating Eve's interpretation from that of Adam, is the fact that Adam elaborates on the consummation of their union while Eve does not. In this way, the difference in emotional emphasis is all the more evident. Eve seemed less enchanted with Adam after seeing him for the first time. Adam however, was immediately overcome with desirous longing and notions of her fairness. In his account he praises the Lord for what he sees as, "the fairest . . . of all thy gifts," (46). For several lines, he expounds on her grace, dignitie, loveliness, divinity, innocence and modesty. This show of undeniable adoration is not chronicled in Eve's account as she was more enchanted by her own beauty. To say this may make it seem as though Eve was somehow shallow and vain but the fact of the matter is that she was the object of all Adam's desires; she was what he sought from the Lord. On the other hand, she had absolutely no knowledge of her pre-ordained purpose, and acted according to natural instinct, which was to gravitate toward what she found more appealing, which brings me to my next point.

Without being made privy to what is expected of one as a human being, man will naturally function at the appetitive/ bestial level of the Platonic Model of the Human Soul, as Eve did when she turned away from Adam. While Adam, having his human condition made explicitly clear, is able to transcend carnal desire into that of a more profound nature (8-1). His desire for Eve is not purely spiritual but he does see more than just her carnal qualities as he remarks at, "her virtue and the conscience (awareness) of her worth," (50-50).

When debating on what to write my paper on I thought really hard. I didn't want this to be something I just threw together. Since the class was about social problems that affect different people different ways I wanted to research a topic that has had an effect on my life. Recently, I discovered that a good friend of mine, whom I will call Jane, began using Heroin. This discovery brings out mixed emotions I am angry at her; I feel sorry for her; I feel worried about her; and I am furious at who ever sold it to her. I never expected anyone I know to be a user of heroine, but it can happen to anyone. What I want to discuss are basic heroin information, the effects from the use of heroin, side effects from long-term use, the legal aspects concerning heroin, and finally recovery programs for users.

The average non-users knowledge of heroin doesn't go much further than "it's really bad, you shoot up, get addicted, and die." I found a lot of information concerning basic heroin facts that typical non-users wouldn't know. For example, heroin can have many a number of appearances and street names. Pure Heroin looks like a fine white powder with a distinct bitter taste. However, most heroin bought on the streets is not pure and can be white to dark brown in color. Some of the numerous slang terms for heroin are dope, smack, H, and junk to name a few (as cited on usdoj.gov, 00). Today under U.S. Federal Law, heroin is classified as a schedule one narcotic. Schedule one drugs are those of which have a high potential for abuse, has no current medicinal purposes, and lacks acceptable safety for use under medical supervision (as cited on erowid.org, 00).

.

I feel it is important to provide information on the effects of the drug itself so as to get a better understanding on why a person would continue to partake in a self-destructive lifestyle. Heroin is an Opiate, which are drugs that derive from the opium poppy, which also include Codeine, Methadone, and Opium. Users of heroin describe the experience as a feeling of relaxation, warmth and a sense of well-being. Nothing matters to the user while intoxicated. Initially, most people who use heroin feel nauseous and often vomit. This is followed by a period when the user is conscious but looks like theyre falling asleep. Another side effect from use is the decrease in breathing and heart rate. Once this has passed the user is able to interact normally with other people (as cited on brookes.ac.uk, 00).

Custom Essays on Heroin and Other Opiates

There are many negative side effects related to long-term heroin use, dependence being nearly guaranteed. Taking any opiate regularly can cause the development of a physical tolerance to the substance resulting in need for an increased dosage for the desired effect (Halgin & Whitbourne, 000, p 41). Their body starts to rely on the chemical being present, and without it they will become ill. People suffering from dependence compulsively seek out the substance, revolving their life around obtaining heroin or other opiates (Halgin & Whitbourne, 000, p 414).

Dependence is synonymous with withdraw in the case of opiates. Anywhere between six and twenty-four hours after the last time of use withdraw can occur. Someone withdrawing from an opiate habit is likely to experience several unpleasant physical symptoms. Hot and cold sweats, nausea, diarrhea and confusion are accompanied by an intense craving to take more of the drug to alleviate withdraw symptoms. Heroin withdrawal is not physically dangerous, but is not a desirable feeling (Halgin & Whitbourne, 000, p 414-415).

Long-term heroin use can also trigger serious conditions including delirium, mood disorders, sleeps disorders, and sexual dysfunction. There are also possibilities of physical damage to one's body due to long-term use. Skin infections, liver diseases, bacterial infections, and lung complications are risks when using heroin. The most serious effect from heroin use is the risk of contracting HIV, Hepatitis, and other STD's when sharing needles. Unfortunately many users are more worried about getting a fix than their health (Halgin & Whitbourne, 000, p 415).

A 16 national household survey on drug abuse estimated that .4 million people had used heroin or other illegal opiates at some point in their lives. Their survey also reports that since 1 there has been an increase in the use of heroin; trends show that between 1 and 5 there was an increase of 141,000 more users. A large chunk of these new users where persons under age twenty-six who predominately snort, or smoke the drug (as cited on usnodrugs.com, 00). A more recent statistic from the DEA, repots that in 000, approximately 1.% of the population reported heroin use at least once in their lifetime (Halgin & Whitbourne, 000, p 414) .

With heroin use on the rise, the question of what is society's role in assisting treatment and recovery for addicts should be asked. Counseling programs are offered in many communities. Narcotics Anonymous is a popular group counseling programs, which involves a twelve-step method towards recovery. Rehab is another option for addicts. While these institutions are readily available and most of the time free they are not a popular choice for heroin users. Due to heroin's addictive properties users have no intention of going cold turkey.

An increasingly popular method for treating addicts in the United States is methadone maintenance. This program provides the addict a gradual controlled quitting process. Methadone is a heroin-like substance that is commonly found in liquid form and administer orally. It is similar to heroin in that it's an opiate and highly addictive, but it is viewed as a safer alternative. The drug lasts longer than heroin and is typically taken once a day. Another positive affect is that it does not make the user drowsy. The desired goal is that recovering addicts can take the methadone to maintain withdraw symptoms and still be able to function in society (Eitzen & Zinn, 000, p 51).

The controversy over the ethics behind methadone maintience is the message that is being sent through these types of programs. Some argue that Methadone Clinics encourage the use of drugs instead of preventing use. This may be true but the fact remains that these programs provide individuals with medical supervision of their use and what they receive is clean and safe (Eitzen & Zinn, 000, p 5) .

Heroin is a problem that may not affect everyone directly, but it is a problem that may affect someone you know even if you don't expect it. I feel as a society the best route to take when trying to fix it is education and decriminalization. Programs like D.A.R.E are a good start, but they are only implemented during the elementary years if school. It is in the middle and high school years when experimentation is more likely to occur and a more in depth program should be created. When I speak of decriminalization I don't mean to advocate legal use and sale of heroin. What I feel should be done is stop treating addicts like criminals and more like persons afflicted with a disease. Incarceration should be replaced with rehabilitation and supervision once rehab has been completed. This is not a type of problem that is going to disappear anytime soon; that fact does not exclude us from taking steps to try and help our fellow man.

"A New England Nun," by Mary E. Wilkins Freeman, and "The Awakening," by Kate Chopin, are two stories that have elements of irony. In "A New England Nun," the irony is with Louisa, her dog Caesar, and the yellow canary. These two pets play a major role in Louisa's life. Also, in "The Awakening," Edna Pontellier's green and yellow parrot represents her lifestyle. These two women are strange and live strange lives according to the short stories.

Louisa's dog Caesar lived a lonely life chained to his doghouse with a couple feet of freedom in his world. Caesar was a prisoner of his home as Louisa was prisoner to her home. The dog became accustomed to isolation and does not know any other way of existence. Joe, the man Louisa loved came back, after being away for fourteen years to take her away from her prison. He also would have freed the dog. Joe thought, "It's down right cruel to keep him tied up there. Someday I'm going to take him out (pg 70)." Louisa objects to this, because she fears the animal's nature of the dog has lain dormant for fourteen years. In a way Louisa became tied to her home and Caesar is chained to his doghouse because of unfortunate events occurring while he was very young. Caesar was big, ferocious and aggressive. During this period he severely damaged the hand of a man in the community. This action caused the community to be frightened of him. Consequently, it was ordered that Caesar was not to be allowed to run loose or free again. Like Caesar, Louisa became isolated and homebound became of the unfortunate event, her only lover had left her while she was also, very young. However, Louisa's action was slightly different from Caesar's. Although initiated by the unfortunate event. She chose to continue that lifestyle. Both she and Caesar lived a quiet and serene life that would be turned upside down with the impending marriage. Both would have their way of life radically changed.

Louisa could also be compared to her little yellow canary. The songbird in the cage commonly used as a literary device. It described the position of women who had sufficient economic status. They like the birds were objects of beauty. Both were performers forced to live in cages. Louisa performed for Joe and society and the bird performed for Louisa. One difference between the two is that Louisa's cage had a garden. The bird had to sing and the woman had to act with grace. The canary reacted to Joe entering the house in a way that is similar to Louisa's emotions. The canary lies in a dormant peace until disturbed by the entrance of Joe. Louisa in the fourteen years of waiting came into herself. She was accustomed to her space and Joe took up too much of her precious space. He would throw chaos into her rigidly ordered world. She was the queen of her home and did not want to share control with Joe's mother. When married they would have to moved into Joe's house with his mother.

"Allez vous-en! Allez vous-en! Sapristi! That's all right! (pg 6)" These are the words hollered by this maddened, caged bird. When translated into English, they are, "Go away! Go away, for heaven's sake! These expressions aptly represent the forbidden thoughts racing through the mind of Edna Pontellier, the novel's heroine. She wants to go away, for she is bored with her mundane life. She is tired of dealing with an insensitive husband and her ordinary children. She longs for something more exciting. Ironically, Edna probably should have taken the parrot's advice and escaped from her hellish world immediately. In addition to the words of warning, the image of the hostile, shrieking bird in itself should have had a profound effect oh her. Yet, she ignored the warning signs. Consequently, she was forced to meet her tragic end like the parrot; Edna was also trapped, not within a metal cage but by a symbolic metal cage, the standards and traditions of society.

Both of these women are symbolized through their pets. Louisa finds herself being alone and away from everybody. She has lived alone for fourteen years, without any problems or anyone in her way. Both Caesar and the canary have become comfortable with the peace and quietness of their limited living space. Neither, Louisa, Caesar nor the canary wants of feel comfortable with their comfort zone being invaded. Therefore, they react according. Whereas, Edna wants some space from her husband, children and the community, like her parrot, she was confused and frustrated. Both Edna and her parrot, responded to their unlikable situation with a great deal of hostility and in dramatic fashion. Edna became depression and couldn't take her tormented life style any longer. Therefore, she brought a drastic end to this situation for herself.

The Cask of Amontillado has many different themes in it but the three that stick out and grab my attention would be. Revenge, murder, and alcoholism all take place and have a main role in the short story.

The first of the three that come up in the story is revenge. In the first paragraph the narrator talks about the thousands of injuries or insults that he has taken from his friend Fortunato. He vows revenge but you could not see that from just looking at him you have to see into his soul. "A wrong is undressed when retribution overtakes its redresser".

Thereafter alcoholism comes into play as the narrator meets Fortunato at the carnival and begins to socialize with him. While socializing the narrator begins handing glasses of wine to Fortunato and talking about going to get some amontillado, which is the best of the best, when it comes to wine. The narrator knows the one thing that Fortunato loves to do is drink and takes advantage of it.

Meanwhile as Fortunato is intoxicated the narrator takes him down into the catacombs of his mansion where they keep all of the wines and the bodies of the dead. In a plot to murder him the narrator takes him to the end of the tunnels chains him up to a wall and proceeds to leave him there. He then goes to the opening of the tunnel and begins to mason the opening closed with bricks trapping Fortunato inside alive till he dies.

The Treaty of Versaille

It was neither a vindictive, harsh peace nor a lenient one, desdigned to reconcile. How far does this description of the Treaty of Versailles explain why it contained the seeds of the Second

World War?

In 11, the major world powers met at the Paris peace conference to determine the fate of Europe at the end of

Cheap Custom Essays on The Treaty of Versaille

World War 1. Europe was in turmoil. Five empires had disappeared, millions of people were dead, both military and civilians, and revolution fuelled by the forces of nationalism and socialism seemed ready to destroy the hopes of a future and lasting peace. The major world leaders were hoping to accomplish a miracle at Versailles, peace. Nevertheless, the conditions that they were faced with made that hope only more difficult not only in the writing of the treaty but also in reaching its objectives. The dream of a Settlement to satisfy both winners and losers was both impossible and contradictory. For Germany the outcome in years to come was the exact objective that the Treaty had tried all along to impede - domination of

Europe.

What went wrong? Why? These questions have plagued historians for years. If only the players had acted in a different fashion would the future outcomes have been different. Or was the situation of Europe such at the time that the future was fated no matter what.

What did the leaders want to do? The Council of Five (Britain, the U.S., Italy, Japan and France) wanted to destroy

Germanys power in Europe and to make her pay for the costs of war. They wanted peace but Germany was to pay for that peace, not only by reducing its army, reducing its fishing fleet and relinquishing part of its heavy shipping fleet, but also by ceding land, sending coal, livestock, machinery and money to those countries who had suffered by the war. Germany was pronounced to be the sole aggressor of the war and therefore it was Germany who had to pay the bill.

Supposedly, Germany was to be treated as an equal in Europe but at the same time, Germany was not invited to participate in the writing up of the Treaty. Rather, they were literally given the ultimatum to sign the treaty with no option whatsoever. Germany was to have an Allied Army in its land and they were to pay for that Army. How can these terms be considered to being treated as an equal? Furthermore the coal of the Saar region had to be sent to France for a period of fifteen years at the end of that time it would be decided under whose area of jurisdiction the Saar was to be under.

Obviously the Treaty was written up in a way so as to diminish the power of Germany, at home and abroad. At the end, there was no abroad, since Germany lost all its colonies.

What was the treaty like? The potential of Germany military and economic superiority in Germany was a strong threat to the writers of the Treaty. This had to be stopped at all costs. The easiest way for the writers of the Treaty to achieve this goal was to require financial retribution for the war. If Germany was stripped of its economy then industrial growth would not be possible. Furthermore if the fruit of that industry had to be sent to the countries who had suffered during the war, then Germany would produce for the victors and not for themselves.

In this way, enough would be left for Germany to get by, but not enough for it to become a power again.

Alsace-Lorraine was ceded to France. France was thrilled, if they had had their way; perhaps another area of Germany would have been ceded to them, the Saar, a major coal producing area.

German rivers were internationalized.

This is important in the feeling of humiliation of Germany because until that time, Germany was very closed and did not like foreign presence on their land, particularly in this way.

The map of Western Europe was redrawn.

Lithuania, Poland, Czechoslovakia, Yugoslavia, Hungary, Estonia, and

Latvia were created. Many of these new countries had to accommodate substantial minorities within their borders. Families, who were once citizens of one nation, suddenly found themselves citizens of two different nations because of the new map. More importantly, large groups of German-speaking people suddenly found themselves as citizens of Poland and Czechoslovakia.

It was very difficult for the writers of the Treaty to accomplish what they had set out to do because of many factors. To begin with, 7 nations were invited to write the Treaty with

70 representatives, excluding Germany. However only The Supreme Council or The Big Ten were the actual writers of the Treaty. They were the President of the United States and both the Prime Minister and the Foreign Minister of France, Great Britain, Italy and Japan. Each country went to write the

Treaty with their own interests at heart. President Wilson of the United

States had just drafted his Fourteen Points that were to become the League of Nations and his main interest was a moderate peace. Great Britain had just had general elections and were committed to bring the war criminals to justice and to make Germany pay for the war. France was vindictive.

France had suffered terribly during the war and they were motivated by revenge. France was interested in itself and in its future security. Italy had previous agreements with France and England and had commitments in the Near East. Italy played a secondary role. Japan on the other hand championed

Italian claims against Austria and the new Yugoslavia. This led to disagreements among France, the U.S and Britain. Yet, they finally agreed on a settlement.

In order to persuade the French to agree to these terms, the United States and Britain promised to agree to these terms, the United States and Britain promised to protect France. However

Britain would not aid France unless the United States did, and the U.S senate refused to ratify the military guarantee and treaty; therefore Britain was not under obligation and France felt tricked.

A few weeks after the writing of the Treaty and before its completion President Wilson had to return to the United

States for a time and Prime Minister Lloyd George had to return to London.

The original Supreme Council composed of five countries became the Council of Four. Many disagreements went on internally before and after President

Wilsons departure. France and England wanted Germany to pay for the cost of war, but President Wilson felt that these terms were too harsh. France wanted to annex the Saar region but the Americans and the British opposed this move. The Polish claims, the Japanese pretensions in Shantung and the Italian claims in Dalmatia also caused friction to the point that Italy left the conference for a period of two weeks. Finally, the Treaty was presented to the Germans for signature. The Germans felt that the Treaty was not in keeping of the conditions by which they had laid down their arms and that many of the clauses were almost impossible to fulfill. But they were given no option but to sign.

In making the Germans sign the Treaty with the clauses that were in it, a stronger sense of nationalism was formed in Germany. The German people had always been a very proud people of themselves, their country and their achievements. The small military corps that was left felt vindictiveness towards the countries that had reduced their military strength. The factory workers and leaders were also filled with hatred at having to manufacture for the victors and not for themselves. It was a harsh blow to lose colonies and land - an empire was destroyed. Some of the German people were all of a sudden no longer Germans but Czechs or Poles. The settlement also left France feeling that it was not strong enough. The defection of the United States destroyed one of the main props of French security and was in part responsible for the next war. Along with the fact that Germany was left was humiliated yet left with some strength and wishing for revenge.

You have to do what you have to do, right? Well what if it means denying students a vocation class because of a failing grade in one of their academic classes? Like the No Pass No Play rule in basketball, the schools are thinking about making this rule in respects to their vocation class. I think the no pass no vocation rule is good because then the students will have to put more effort into their classes, students will earn a higher grade point average, and also will raise the schools test scores.

Most importantly, if the students are forced to pass their academic classes to take their vocation class, then the students will put forth more effort in their studies, other than just their vocational. The vocational classes offered is the reason why the student come to Metro Tech instead of going to their home school. Most of the students attending these classes are 17 or 18 year-olds getting ready to get out into the world , and their vocation training will help them be more prepared. Therefore, they'll make sure that they're keeping a decent grade, because the students know that it deals with their careers. So if the students are really true to their class, then they'll show more effort if that's what it takes to stay in the class.

Second, when the students put more effort in their classes, then naturally their grade point average will improve also. If the students are going to do the work in their academic classes, they'll make sure that what's being done is right. This is because students will not do work just to get a failing grade. This will bring up the students overall G.P.A., and maybe even get the students to think more about college. With more students earning higher G.P.A.'s, then the Phoenix Union High School District will see more representation in Colleges.

Finally, with students doing their work in all their classes, then they'll be capable to raise the school's test scores. This is because the students are actually learning what's being taught in their other classes. As a result, when the students step-up to take the district and state tests, the students will be ready for them instead of just dialing down the center. Who knows, maybe our district could be number 1. Or at least a respectable district when it comes to learning.

Write your Sometimes You Just Got To Do What You Got To Do research paper

Until the district steps-in on what's going on, the students will never put forth the effort in any of their other classes, they won't earn a higher G.P.A., and won't raise the school's test scores. The people in charge have to start viewing the vocational classes as an extracurricular activity. In sports, the no pass no play rule is law. No different should it be when dealing with vocational classes. Then maybe the students will take their other classes more seriously, because they know the district means business. However, it's up to the school district to handle it.

The third titration of .5cm³ is an anomalous result. Therefore I would not include this result or the rough result when working out the average titration. This anomalous result may have occurred due to missing the end point of the reaction, inaccurate measurements of the pipette or burette and not noticing the final colour change accurately.

Accuracy has tried to be maintained though many procedures in the method;

Weighing using a chemical balance means that the solid's weight is correct to dp.

Cheap custom writing service can write essays on I cant beleive that someone else knicked my essay elephant idea. HA beat that for an essay title.

A graduation flask has a small percentage error and it is relatively easy to see the 50cm³ mark.

Adding the same amount of methyl orange indicator each time, and using the minimum amount of indicator needed.

Recording the burette reading to decimal places

To measure the accuracy of my results I am going to work out the percentage error for each apparatus I have used in experiment. To find this I have calculated it using the formula.

Percentage error = error x 100

Reading

The weighing of the solid was recorded to d.p. This means it has been rounded to give me this figure, e.g. if the weight recorded was .64g than the original weight could have been .65 or .645. The percentage error is then (0.005 x 100) / .64 = 0.18%

The 50cm³ graduated flask has an error of 0.cm which is 0.08% percentage error.

One drop of the burette has a volume of 0.05cm³. The results of the burette are recorded to dp. The average titration recording of the results is 1.5. Therefore the percentage error is

0.005 x 100 = 0.0%

1.5

The 5cm³ pipette has reading has an error of 0.06cm³ or a percentage error of 0.4%.

All these percentage errors are low and therefore should not badly affect the accuracy of the results. This however does not include human error which will affect the reliability and accuracy of the results. The accuracy of the results may have also been weakened due to transferring the sulphuric acid into the burette some may have spilt. This can also be a source of error for transferring the solid into the graduated flask. The other sources of human error are reading the burette reading or the pipette reading, adding too much of the sulphuric acid and not judging the colour change accurately.

These errors could lead to wrong results. The misjudgement of colour and adding too much acid solution often means that the volume of titrant used is over the actual amount needed.

These results are reliable because for each of the titrations the variables have been kept constant for each titration. The temperature will have been constant as the results were conducted in the same room within an hour of each other. The surface area of the reactant was kept the same as was the concentration as all the solution was taken from the same flask of the same solution. The pressure and light would also have remained constant as all the titrations were carried out in the same room at the same place.

The volumes used for each titration correspond to each other to 0.1cm³ of each other except the anomalous result. The results reliability increased by repeating the titration till you have accurate results also helps the reliability

The method could be improved by

· Placing a white tile underneath the conical flask to accurately judge the colour change.

· Using a wash bottle to ensure all the solid is completely transferred.

· Using a glass rod or heating the solution to ensure the solid is completely dissolved

· Using a funnel to transfer the acid solution into the burette without spilling any.

The method ensures accuracy and reliability by instructing to

· Record the exact mass of the anhydrous solid carbonate that has been measured.

· Making sure all the solid is dissolved.

· Using a pipette filler instead of just a 5cm³ beaker.

· Repeating the titration several times.

All of these may not be changed in the method, also the use of the burette and pipette as these have a low percentage error and the number of drops, which is the minimum amount needed must not be changed.

Television, movies, magazines and radio are the tools by which the public is informed of the news from the world aboard. Ben Bagdikian of the University of California, Berkeley, has written that some of the largest corporations in the world General Electric, Disney, Time Warner, Westinghouse now own distribution and control of what the American public sees in all forms of media (Hazen ). Two of these companies are defense contractors involved in nuclear power production, and the others are entertainment manufacturers. Being owned by Disney, it is unlikely that ABC will do another PrimeTime Live episode that airs the practices of Disney, or that NBC will ever have negative news coverage of the nuclear power industry, as it is owned by General Electric (Edwards 1). When there is no diversity of ownership across the news media or any media, the public will receive a very biased view of world events.

In 16 under the Bill Clinton administration, Congress passed the Telecommunications Act. This act removed the many tiers of regulation in the telecommunications industry and opened the industry to an essentially unfettered free market. Under the Telecommunications Act TV networks could now go from owning 5 percent of the nation's TV market to owning 5 percent, and local phone companies could buy out local cable companies. The act caused ABC to be bought by Disney, CBS to be bought by Westinghouse, and Ted Turner's media empire to become part of Time Warner (Hazen 6). With these mergers came some hints of how the new proprietors would use their journalists Disney's ABC News apologized to Philip Morris for having told the truth on a broadcast of Day One, about the company's manipulation of nicotine levels in its cigarettes; and CBS's 60 Minutes was instructed to bury an explosive interview with the whistleblower Jeffrey Wigand about the studies on addictive properties of tobacco by producer Brown and Williamson (Downing and Ali Sreberny-Mohammadi 57). According to the Tyndall Report, a newsletter that tracks the amount of time nightly network newscasts devote to various issues, neither the passage nor the signing of the most sweeping telecommunications legislation in 60 years, the Telecommunications Act of 16, made the top 10 stories in their respective weeks (Hazen 8).

Supporters for the Telecommunication Act of 16 praised the bill as beneficial to the public at large. It would lower prices and improve service, they claimed, by allowing the giant conglomerates of the telecommunications industry to compete with one another. However, the law was not created with the consumer in mind. According to Jim Naureckas, the editor of Extra Magazine, the bill was bought and paid for by the very telecommunications conglomerates the bill was suppose to control (Patterson 15). Far from mandating competition among telecommunications companies, the act encourages already huge corporations to pursue further mergers and allows businesses to form alliances with their supposed rivals in other sectors, reducing the risk that new products will provide consumers with a meaningful choice (Hazen 4). CBS, whose new owner Westinghouse, already had stations of its own, needed this bill passed so the limit would be raised on ownership, just to avoid having to sell off stations.

Help with essay on Truth and Control in the Fourth Estate

The public can no longer depend on the media as a source of biased-free news coverage. Burying and selling stories at the request of advertisers and ownership has become common place. Dean Singleton, owner of fifty daily newspapers with a total circulation on .1 million, has admitted to selling and burying news articles at the request of major advertisers. Singleton has defended this by saying, "This is just how business is done" (Sherman 54). When media monopolies, such as General Electric, control all the sources of media within a community, they can declare their own blackout of news that they do not want the public to see. Walter Cronkite, a famous news broadcaster has said on the subject of media monopolies, "...they can twist the news any way they please, and there's no monitor. There's nobody to say don't. Nobody to say, hey wait a minute, folks, you're not getting the truth" (Hazen 6). This situation now exists because the media industry is not an industry supplying a public service as it once was suppose to be. The media industry is now only concerned with making a profit.

Television broadcasters in the United States are required to do little in the way of public service. There are no government regulations to encourage quality, diversity, innovation, or educational value in programming. This has given rise to the expression of, "100 stations and nothing on." The only thing a station is regulated by is its advertisers. Advertising is the foundation and economic lifeblood of mass media. Advertising has helped to establish cultural patterns though television stations and radio. These stations are now reluctant to deviate from these cultural patterns and the programming that set them for fear of losing their advertising revenue. This has created an environment where the television networks are not concerned with what the public wants to see, but what their advertisers want the public to see. The very nature of advertising is to cover the truth under a positive image.

Since advertising controls what consumers buy in stores, the larger corporations want to control the media by which advertising reaches consumers. These huge conglomerates realize that advertising is a 170-billion-dollar-a-year industry, and, since it is largely their own products and services that need to be advertised, why not own the advertising industry (Sardar 1)? This business strategy was made possible by the Telecommunications Act of 16, which was made possible by the politicians who need advertising space and "good press" to get elected. With the passing of this act, politicians gave the media companies what they wanted to ensure positive coverage for themselves. Now more and more media conglomerates are gaining control of both the content what you see and hear, such as movies, videos, cable channels, and television shows and the conduit -- how the images get to you, such as television station, cable companies, movie studios and record studios (Hazen 84).

It was small wonder that politicians, out of fear of the media companies, have given them free reign. Media companies can make or break a politician, because they control the way politicians can reach or not reach the public. Media companies can simply not give a politician much space in magazines or on TV talk shows. They can also play up every negative thing they can find out. This means that media power is political power -- especially true when media companies give a huge amount in PAC contributions. With the media conglomerates having such strong control over policy making, there is little chance that the public will see any change in the way things are. There is little chance that the public will see anything but what the mass media corporations will want them to see.

Gatsby becomes delusional with the thought of Daisy. He again thought that he could turn back the hands of time and have everything the same and perfect, with the exception of a few dollars or so. He had no life anymore. She was his life.

It is also clear that the driving motivation for getting all his money, was so that he will appeal to Daisy. She was a material woman and she was used to living a lavish life. She knew that if she married Gatsby, she would have to give up many of the luxuries that she had become accustomed to over the years of her life. How To Celebrate My Freedom

How to celebrate my freedom?? There is so many ways to celebrate my freedom in America Compared to other countries. We are the Country with the Most Freedom.

One way I can Celebrate my freedom is that I can believe in any kind of religion that I want to. I have the choice to choose my own religion unlike other countries you have to have there religion because there is no other choice even if you do not believe in there religion. But here in America You can have any religion you want and you will not get in any form of trouble for it because in this country unlike other countries you are free to your own believes and you can share them without the worry of getting killed. In other countries you can be killed for a believe in another religion and nothing will happen to who killed you so most people are scared and just force themselfs to believe in there religion . Here if someone dose something to you cause what you believe in they can get into a lot of trouble if they are caught.

Write my Essay on how to celebrate freedom for me

Another way I can Celebrate my Freedom is by my Freedom Speech. In most countries if you bad mouth your leader, Ruler, King, Queen or President or what ever it is called they can have you killed for it just for saying what you think of them unlike were we live you can say what you want as long as you are only talking just don't threaten to kill anyone cause then yea you will get in trouble. Like if you say hudom husam was a jerk you could be kill for that, if you said u didn't like him you would be killed people live in fear there they never speech what they feel they are forced to say they are happy when they really are not because they are scared and they can not say what they want to because they live in fear. In this country you can say all that about are President and you cant get in trouble because that is your own thought and your just using your freedom of Speech not many other countries have that we are lucky to have freedom of speech only thing is do not say your going to kill somebody cause you can get in huge trouble for that.

Another way I can celebrate my Freedom is that I have the choice to grow up and be what ever I want to become I can be anything I want in this country a Doctor, Nurse ,Basketball Player, Baseball Player , anything you name it and if you work hard enough at it you can become it. In some countries they don't allow you to be those things. You have to be what your parents want or what your ruler wants you don't even have control over your life they make all the choices for you. Here we make are own decision its all up to us nobody else.

Another way I can celebrate my Freedom is that I can come and go as I please I can go any where I want to. I can go to England and then back to America without getting in trouble. In Some places you cant they do not let you leave like Cuba they sneak over here they come over in boats and that there is against the law they do not let there people leave. If you get caught trying to leave they would probably torture you or throw you in jail they don't let anyone leave there country once u move there that is it you can not move back out. While here you are free to leave any time you want to and nothing will happen to you and you can come back without problems or worry of getting in trouble

Another way I can celebrate my freedom is that I do not have to wear towels around my head like other countries all the men have to wear towels around there head and the ladies have to hide there faces with towels and they all dress a the same way. While here I am free to wear what ever I want, I do not have to wear a towel on my head or and the ladies do not have to cover there face with a towel or dress the way they tell me to. I could dress like that if I wanted to but I do not want to so I do not have to. I choose what I wear and how to wear it nobody tells me how to dress unlike them other countries.

Another way I can Celebrate my freedom is that I can vote for who ever I want to we can choose who is in are office it is up to us. In other countries it is not like that and in some people are scared to run for an office because they will get killed for it so that is not fair. Here we do it fairly they let us decide in some places they just appoint people to ruler or head office spots the people have no say in it when here we have most of the say on who goes in and who don't

Well that is some ways to Celebrate my freedom there are many more ways to celebrate are Freedom in America we have the most Freedom in the world we run are own lives nobody makes us do nothing we do not want to we make the decision on what and what not to do unlike all of the other countries in this country.

Advertising is a common and powerful tool used by many businesses in society today. It is a form of communication which aims to influence others and get a product well known. Advertising can also illustrate and re-enforce our beliefs while also creating new beliefs in society. Advertisements are also created using the AIDA theory, attention, interest, desire and action.

The purpose of this ad is to promote Toyota's latest family sized off road vehicle in America. By placing the Toyota sequoia in the midst of sequoia national park it re-enforces the car as a recreational vehicle and achieves double the commercial impact towards the car as you hear the name sequoia twice as often in the ad as oppose to putting the car on its own. The picture in this ad was taken at sunset to capture the light on the car making it look more expensive and by doing this they have captured a more relaxed atmosphere. At the top and bottom of the ad they have placed topographical maps showing that the vehicle can go through varied landscapes. The usage of interstate and road signage places emphasis on the Americans desire to travel and also the different colours and font sizes of the signs draws your eyes to that particular part of the ad. The angle of the car also makes the car seem longer and wider.

This ad would be aimed at Americans in there forties that earn a med-high income with children old enough to travel. Some of the embedded ideologies in this ad would be that Americans like to travel long distances, all families are big and all families like to drive big cars.

In America all freeways are large and well maintained so it would be easier to travel by car. In other countries the prices of flights are cheap so it encourages people to fly but in America they aren't. Americans also like getting away on weekends because unlike Australians they don't have blocks of annual leave and driving on a weekend would be much easier and cheaper than flying.

Custom writing service can write essays on advertising, on americas toyota sequoia

The word sequoia is named after a pine tree and not many people other than Americans would know this. They are also assuming that all Americans would know that it is sequoia national park in the background of this ad and where the park is situated. Also in America there are a lot of small towns so going through one of these towns with a full car of eight people would most likely double the population.

By reconstructing this ad and placing the Toyota sequoia in front of a rugby field it has changed the target audience from older families to males in there mid twenties or families with young children that enjoy sport. Americans are obsessed with dieting. Females seen particularly obsessed; however, males are not completely forgotten in todays dieting age. Many people diet, and everyone wants small, thin figures. Whys is this so sought after? Society does not accept overweight people, but it has not always been that way.

Females have not always been wrapped up in the way they look, although the female body has always been in the spotlight. What is wanted in the spotlight has changed over time. It has been changed to meet societys wants. In the early 1800s, girls judged their worth by their interactions with others and God. Dieting used to be used less, but females would wear garments called corsets to shape their bodies to a desired figure. Dieting became a fad in the early 100s when women were sought after that were thin and petite. Instead of eating correctly., women would just starve themselves to attain the thin look. Since then diets have grown much more drastic. if an American women dislikes her thighs, she is unlikely to like herself. Sayings like this are usually true amongst the American population. People spend millions of dollars to try to look thin, with many never achieving what they truly want. Many diet fads have come and gone since the early 100s, but the only one to stay and work is healthy eating and exercise.

Males, I feel, have been under much less stress by society. A large figure was sought after by men in the 1800s because to grow somewhat fat was a luxury. Times have changed though. Males have taken some of the heat because society has decided the large fat figures are no longer acceptable. Men now suffer, along with women, chasing the same fad diets and going to the same extremes. Even children fall into this separate category.

Children have their own category because parents often choose food and snacks for them. Children become overweight for a variety of reasons. The most common causes are genetic factors, lack of physical activity, unhealthy eating patterns, or a combination of these factors. Children who parents are overweight may be at an increased risk of becoming overweight themselves. Although weight problems run in families, not all children with a family history of obesity will be overweight. The increasing popularity of television and computer video games contributes to childrens inactive lifestyle. The average American child spends approximately twenty-four hours each week watching television, time that could be spent in some sort of physical activity.

Large people are often gawked at and made fun of due to their weight. This encourages the dieting fad. No one likes to be the odd one out, and no one likes to be made fun of. The youngsters are taking a lot of name calling from fellow classmates and peers. These name-callings can be very hurtful but it also pushes our society to be healthier through diet and exercise. At the same time it encourages people to resort to fasting, and other non-nutritious ways of living. The diet will continue to exist in American society until society decides to change what figure is acceptable.

Psychology Theories Sigmund Freud is one of the most famous psychologists to ever hit the study of psychology. His name alone symbolizes the importance of his theories, and the name that comes to most peoples heads when saying the word psychology is Sigmund Freud. Freud was a psychodynamic psychologist and came from the conservative point of view which states that man is bad and society is good, which I do not agree with 100% because not all mans actions are necessarily bad and with bad intentions. Freud was a real pessimist when it came to human nature. He identifies mans weaknesses in saying that man is a biological creature with biological drives. He reflected these ideas off of Darwins original ideas. I do agree with this theory because mans drives are survival and self-preservation. Freud also stated that mankinds aggression helps him to survive, he says that man has an innate sense of survival. I also agree with this theory because aggression and dominance guarantees our survival. He also believed that over the many thousands of years that man has been alive man developed rational thought. Freud stated that people do not have to live like animals because overtime we developed a society that has rules and regulations in order to keep our animal nature in check. I agree with Freud on this because of many cases when a person has some bad intentions in mind but lets them go when they know the consequences. Another thing Freud said was the idea of Opposing Instincts which when comes to mind creates conflict. The first of the two opposing instincts is the Eros, which is the life instinct, which also ensures the organisms life. The ID presses us to survive and pushes us to produce. The Eros seeks pleasure and then we rationalize it. Next comes the Thanatos, which is the death instinct, and this instinct says that all organisms have a death wish towards themselves and I agree completely. This he says becomes our own destruction. Freud says it is natural to move towards death and this I think is obvious. The feelings we have must be expressed and released and we direct our feelings outward. This becomes our aggression toward others. Freuds view on the mind is in the shape of an iceberg. He believes that mankinds mind works in the unconscious, which I do not agree with at all I feel that man is mostly conscious when it comes to behaviors. Every choice that mankind makes he is aware of, but maybe the consequences of our action might be unknown. The Structure of Personality which is another interesting part of Freuds theory basically states that we have an ID, a Superego and an Ego. The ID is a biological reservoir of urges and impulses that need to be gratified. He says the ID does not have a conscious, it acts on instinct. It seeks out gratification and pleasure. It is the pleasure principle. The Superego is the Morality Principle, and the Superego knows the difference between right and wrong. The Superego is a bunch of learned internalized morals and values of society. This is basically the thing that keeps the ID in check. Freud said that Superego is our conscious, and that the Superego is the most powerful tool (guilt and pride). Last but not least is the Ego, which is the reality principle. The Ego finds socially acceptable ways to satisfy the ID. It finds the balance between the ID and reality. The functions of the Ego is to find a compromise between the ID and the Superego. The Ego must also learn to deal with anxiety, and it also helps to boost the self-esteem. Without the Ego there would be no mental health. I completely agree with Freuds theory of the Structure of Personality because I feel we have different parts of our behavior that we can control and that we are conscious about and there are other behaviors that come directly from our unconscious. Our ego lies to us, denies, falsifies, and distorts reality which in turn causes us to create what Freud likes to call the seven defense mechanisms. The first of the seven defense mechanisms is Repression. Repression pushes the problem to the subconscious. It is the exclusion of impulses and thoughts from the conscious mind. Next comes Denial, and denial is the cutting of the conscious mind from external threats. An example of this would be when you are walking in the mall with your girlfriend and a beautiful woman walks by and you look but when your girlfriend asks you say, I wasnt looking at her. Next there is a defense mechanism called Sublimation which is the changing of bad behavior and impulses into socially acceptable behavior and impulses. One example of this could be playing football for a scholarship in order to go to college. Another defense mechanism is Reaction Formation which is a development of behavior opposite of that which brings you anxiety. Somebody saying that they hate homosexuals would be a clear example of this defense mechanism. The next mechanism is called Projection which is when the unconscious attribution of your thoughts and feelings is brought onto others. Finding flaws in others is a good example of Projection. Displacement is the next defense mechanism, and this is when an urge is placed onto another object. Taking out anger onto others when you really should be mad at yourself. Last but not least is the defense mechanism of Rationalization which is giving a good reason in place of the true reason. A great example of this would be when a person fails a test and they blame it on work, or some other corny reason instead of saying that they were to lazy to study. With all the different defense mechanisms of the ego I feel that we use all of them some time or another in order to hide our true instincts. Even though I agree with a majority of what Freud says I do not believe that man is completely bad and that society is good. Both man and society play a big role when it comes to behavior. Another well known psychologist which is actually a student of Freuds is Carl Jung who is also a psychodynamic psychologist which means he also comes from the conservative point of view which I mentioned earlier meant he felt man is bad and society is good. Carl Jung went a little deeper than Freud did in his theories and he challenges some of his ideas. One that I agree with the most is that Jungs iceberg is right side up and at the top of the iceberg is the ego, and the level underneath that is the personal unconscious, and the final level of the iceberg is finally the collective unconscious which is almost the exact opposites of Freuds. What I mean by deeper is that he feels that man is not just sexual but spiritual as well. He says that the major difference in man is based on the Libido which is your sex drive. As you can see Jung has a much broader level of human interest. Jung theories are strongly based on Darwins theory of Evolution. Jung thinks we evolved behaviorally which has allowed us to prosper and move forward in order to keep up with society. I do not agree once again that man is bad and society is good, I feel both play a big part in human behavior. Another part of Jungs theory as well as Freuds theory that I dont like is that I dont feel that man is mainly sexual. The part of Jungs theory that I do agree with is that man has evolved behaviorally overtime because if we didnt we would still be behaving like the cave men did thousands of years ago. Its clearly obvious that man has evolved behaviorally. The next part of Carl Jungs theory is the Archetypal Complex, which are common ways of dealing with the world. In other words its a genetically transmitted response strategy. It ensures survival. There are two examples of Archetypal Complexes and they are the enemy archetype and the social archetype. The enemy archetype means that something that is different is threatening to us which I could not agree with more. There are examples in everyday life when a person does not know what something is they immediately show some sort of aggression or frustration which proves they are afraid of what is different or what they do not really know or understand. The social archetype basically means strength in numbers. Also the social archetype is what we look to for support and look to interact and socialize with. The response strate

Beowulf is an epic poem about the life of an Anglo-Saxon hero named Beowulf. It tells how Beowulf, a Geat warrior, travels to help the Danes by killing a monster that is eating their men at their mead hall Herot. It also shows three of the prominent Anglo-Saxon traits which are bravery, loyalty, and generosity.

Throughout the poem, Beowulf shows his bravery by fighting monster after monster. When he faces Grendel he faces him unarmed. (61) I have heard, too, that the monsters scorn of men is so great that he needs no weapons and fears none. Nor will I. He almost always fights alone. (60) That I, alone and with the help of my men, may purge all evil from this hall.

Another trait demonstrated by the poem is loyalty. However no one demonstrates more loyalty than Wiglaf, a young Geat warrior. When his fellow warriors ran from where Beowulf was battling a dragon, Wiglaf was the only one to stay. He yelled at his fellow Geats to stay and fight. (760) And we must go to him, while angry flames burn at his flesh, help our glorious king! (76) By almighty God, Id rather burn myself than see flames swirling around my lord.

The third trait, generosity, is demonstrated by Beowulf throughout his life as a young warrior and even at his death as an aging king. (81) And if death does take me, send the hammered mail of my armor to Higlac, return the inheritance I had from Hrethel, and he from Wayland. (81) Then that brave king gave the golden necklace from around his throat to Wiglaf, gave him his gold-covered helmet, and his rings, and his mail shirt, and ordered him to use them well.

The three traits, bravery, loyalty, and generosity are all demonstrated excellently by the poem Beowulf. In conclusion, I think Beowulf is a great story because it is a classic epic and you can learn alot about the Anglo-Saxons by reading it.

Globalization is a highly charged issue. It is considered both good and bad, depending on the angle you are looking from.

Globalization enables the flow of international information that facilitates trade and investment. The rapid decrease in the cost of telecommunications and transportation made human interaction across countries extremely simple. The international flow of knowledge of management practices and methods of work organization is another benefit of globalization. A major advantage of globalization is that countries that have a deficiency in a specific resource or skill can make use of foreign skills and resources to satisfy their needs. Besides, efficiency will improve if production of certain goods is done by those who can do it better, hence achieving highest quality at a lower cost. Globalization diminished national borders the fall of protection barriers has stimulated free movement of capital and enabled companies to set up several bases around the world.

However, on the other hand, globalization can cause destruction. The fall of borders results in the powerful dominating the weak. A globalized world is not a very democratic world since it belongs to the powerful dominant countries. They will impose their will on the rest. "In practice, the decision-making process at the WTO is used to advance the agendas of the majors, and particularly those of the USA and Western Europe." Globalization means interdependence, but unfortunately developing countries are forced to depend on developed countries and developed countries are using it as an opportunity to take advantage of developing countries.

Large corporations tend to produce their products at countries where labor is cheapest, health and safety standards are the weakest, and environmental laws are least restrictive in order to minimize costs and maximize profits. Developed countries are trying to unfairly misuse the natural resources of underdeveloped countries. This means that poor countries run by already corrupt governments are being bribed in giving their resources away to the USA for free, or almost nothing. They talk of democracy and human rights but they have no concern for people of the developing countries money has more value than these people. Huge transnational companies are becoming more powerful and influential than democratically-elected governments. They put shareholders interests above those of communities and even customers. Globalization is about benefits for large multinationals who are increasingly running governments for their own profit.

Write your Economic Globalization: Good or Bad? research paper

The poor countries will never be able to produce goods as cheaply as the first world countries, never be able to be more than a cheap source of labor. How much is it possible and fair for a small country or a poor country like India to compete with a rich and resourceful country such as the USA? How can these countries catch-up in the world economy? As globalization spreads across the globe, it will cause more destruction that will profit the rich. The West's gain is at the expense of developing countries.

In principle, globalization is a good thing, however, in practice, it is bad because what is currently happening is Americanization, not globalization. If all countries are equal, it could be globalization. I believe that in the USA, politics are run by huge enterprises like oil companies. It's not about what is good for people of the environment it's about profit. True globalization would mean that people working for multinational companies would receive the same level of wages whether working in Indonesia or America. If globalization is inevitable, then at least it should be ethical. It might then be a force for good. It can be an excellent tool for the advancement of all people, when used correctly.

To wrap it up, I'd say that globalization is much like fire, which is neither good nor bad. Used properly, it can be beneficial. Used carelessly, it can be destroying.
