"The Storm," by Kate Chopin, is a story about a married woman whose husband and child are kept from home by a horrible storm. While alone, Calixta's old flame, Alcee, stops by, and asks, "May I come and wait on your gallery till the storm is over?" (07) Calixta gives into her temptations, and disregards the vows she took with her husband.

The central idea, temptation, happens when Calixta and Alcee are alone together for the first time in five years. Calixta is a good wife and mother. She shows this when her family returns, and she showers them with hugs and kisses. Calixta also seems to be a little selfish, especially when "she lifted her pretty chin in the air and laughed aloud" (0), as she watches Alcee leave. It is as if she feels no guilt for what she has done.

The conflict of this story is internal. Calixta is in conflict with the vows she took with her husband, and the passion she feels for Alcee. Calixta gives in to the passion she feels for Alcee by making love to him in her husband's home. Calixta knows she has a good husband, she tells him so when she says, "you too good fo' anything!" (10)

The conflict between her marriage and the love for Alcee are not resolved, even though she is given a chance to pursue the passion she has for Alcee. When Alcee writes his wife, and tells her "not to hurry back," (10) the reader is left uncertain to whether Calixta and Alcee will ever see each other again, or if that day is only a one time thing.

In this story, had the storm not occurred Alcee would never have had to stop for shelter, and her husband and child would have returned home at an earlier hour. The central idea, temptation, would not have been an issue to Calixta, because she would not have had to choose whether to give in to passion or stay faithful to her husband.
