The Importance of Family Structure

A major responsibility for people who are soon to have families is to make sure that their children have the right tools to lead the world when they are old. Basic actions such as love, discipline, nurturing, affection, morals, and values are necessary to create a strong family structure. In order to be successful in the world today, it is important to have a strong family structure.

Without families, most people would be nothing. They would have no one to teach them the way or show them how to succeed in a world where success is somewhat important to being happy. Family relations are the earliest and most enduring social relationships. As a result, family life experiences deeply affect the competence, resilience, and well being of each of the individual (Conger 4). When people are born, they do not have the skills that would allow them to take care of themselves. There is no way that they can shape themselves into the type of person they would probably want to become. It is up to their parents to love them and teach them the life lessons that will remain with them for the rest of their life. Additionally, everything that composes a person's personality is derived from some type of lesson or experience that was taught when he or she was a young child. These lessons will be remembered until death. That is why mothers and fathers have the hardest job on earth.

Parents not only take care of themselves, but they have the responsibility to shape their children into people that will make them proud. The most basic essential that a child needs is love. People want to feel like someone cares in some way or another. When they do not feel love, they often have trouble dealing with it mentally. Families provide the context for some of the most severe violence in our society, and for long-term patterns of physical and emotional abuse that can have dire effects on the mental health of adults and children (Vaught ). In order to love something or someone, love must first be received. This usually starts at an early age, when children are shown by their parents what it is like to be loved and to love something. Nurturing and affection are also incorporated with love. Both of these are important in raising a child.

Another important attribute in creating a strong family structure is discipline. If parents do not have discipline then a child will not learn right from wrong. Parents should teach their children that some things in life are not good and that they must make a smart decision when they are faced with the choice of doing the right thing or the wrong thing. Furthermore, when children do something wrong, parents must discipline them because if they are not told that it was wrong, then they will do it again without hesitation. Discipline also shows children the value of taking responsibility for their actions, something that is very important in life.

Morals and values are extremely important to teach young children because they will use them daily. Every single day a situation will come up that will test the morals and values of a child. And if they was never taught, then the decision could be costly. Everyday situations such as telling the truth, having proper manners, taking responsibility for your actions, and knowing what is right and what is wrong, will be a challenge because people who are successful usually have good morals and values. They must make certain decisions that can cost them in their business or their personal life.

Without love, discipline, morals, values, nurturing, and affection, children will have a hard time dealing with the pressures of life. Whether it is when they are youngsters trying to make friends, or as adults making very important decisions about a business or the family, it has to do with the ideas and lessons that were planted in their heads a long time ago. Without a strong family structure, many people will have a hard time coping with the reality of everyday life.

The Spanish Civil War of 16-1--a proving ground and dress rehearsal in miniature for World War II--was a painful object lesson in the folly of neutrality -by-legislation. Spanish rebels, who rose against the left-learning republican government in Madrid, were headed by Fascistic General Francisco Franco. Generously aided by his fellow conspirators Hitler and Mussolini, he undertook to overthrow the established Loyalist regime, which in turn was assisted on a smaller scale by the Soviet Union. THis pipeline from communist Moscow chilled the natural sympathies of many Americans, especially Roman Catholics.

Washington continued official relations with the Loyalist government. In accordance with previous American practice, this regime shoulod have been free to purchase desperately needed munitions from teh US. But Congress, with the encouragement to Roosevelt and with only one dissenting vote, amended the existing neutrality legislation so as to apply an arms embargo marked dictator Franco, behaved in the manner of a true gentleman. FDR later regretted being so gentlemanly.

Uncle Sam thus sat on the sidelines while Franco, abundantly supplied with arms and men by his fellow dictators, strangled the republican government of Spain. THe democracies, including the US, were so determined to stay out of war that they helped to condemn a fellow democracy to death. In so doing they further encouraged the dictators to take the dangerous road that led over the precipice to World War II.

Such peace-at-any-price-ism was further cused with illogic. Although determined to stay out of war, America declined to build up its armed forces to a point where it could deter the aggressors. IN fact, it allowed its navy to decline in relative strength. It had been led to believe that huge fleets cause huge wars; it was also trying to spare the complaining taxpayer druing the grim days of the Great Depression. WHen President Roosevelt repeatedly called for preparedness, he was breanded a warmonger. Not until 18, the year before World War II exploded, did congress come to grips with the problem when it passed a billion-dollar naval construction act. The calamitous story was repeated of too little, and too late.

The Color Purplean In Depth Look

In 18, Alice Walker published The Color Purple, a chronicle of the struggles of a young black woman, Celie, in rural Georgia during the early 10s. The novel brought an outburst of controversy with its publication. Its black cultural representation made many feel that the novel endorsed old stereotypes of the African American community, more specifically black males. Through the novel, Celie learns the power of communication, the power of sisterhood, the nature of racism and sexism. Walker uses numerous symbols and motifs to help develop these major themes.

Throughout the novel, Alice Walker emphasizes that the expression of thought and feeling is critical to the development of a sense of self. In the opening of the novel, Celie is completely unable to protect herself from those who abuse her. Phrases such as, "It all I can do not to cry. I make myself wood. I say to myself, Celie you a tree. That's how come I know trees fear man," characterize her voice in the beginning to the novel (Walker ). She seems to have little consciousness of injustice and show no anger, despite her abuses (Guitierrez). She says, "I can't even remember the last time I felt mad" (Walker 4). She is able to plainly tell about the events, but she is unable to interpret them. Celie feels that the only way to survive the abuse is to remain silent. Celie's stepfather warned her that she "better not never tell nobody but God" about his abuse (Walker 1). From the belief that she could tell no one, but God, about her abuse, comes the basis of the novel. The letter-writing form of the novel emphasizes the power of communication. Celie writes letters to God, and Nettie, her younger sister, writes to Celie. Both sisters gain strength from their letter writing. However, they seem only to find redemption when they receive responses to their letters from each other. This demonstrates the need for an attentive audience for self-expression. Initially, Celie sees God as her listener and helper. However, Celie's image of God "don't seem quite right" (Walker 01). Celie's faith is immature. Her image of God is distorted by the many negative male figures in her life, and by racism. She thinks he's white. As Celie learns to stop thinking of God as the she does the other men in her life, she begins to see Him in everything around her. This new perception of God symbolizes her move to an independent woman. It also reveals that she is now empowered to communicate freely. After Celie's religious awakening, she describes never noticing the wonders that God has made, such as "the color purple" (Walker 0). Throughout the novel, brighter colors appear to indicate the redemption that various characters experience. On several occasions, Walker uses colors to depict the mood of the atmosphere. In the beginning of the novel, when Celie's sister-in-law, Kate, takes her shopping for a new dress, the only colors to choose from are dull colors. Later in the novel, Celie and Sofia use yellow fabric from Shug's dress for the quilt that they make together after they reconcile their differences. When Celie's husband changes, he paints the entire house "fresh and white" (Walker 60). Color can be regarded as a sign of renewal and rebirth in these scenes.

Help with essay on the color purple

Throughout the novel, Walker depicts female friendships as a means for women to gather the courage to express themselves. These stories allow the women to deal with the oppression and dominance. Relationships with women provide a refuge in a world of violent men. Some of the female friendships took a familial form, perhaps motherly or sisterly. When Celie takes care of Shug, she seems motherly. At other times they act as though they are sisters. Others are sexual; while still others are mentoring and still others are simply friendships. Sofia, Celie's daughter-in-law, states that her fighting abilities come from her relationships with her sisters (Walker 4). Nettie uses her relationship with Celie to help her through the years of living in Africa. Samuel, a minister who adopted Celie's biological children, says that the Olinka women can only bear polygamy because of the strong relationships that they have with one another. Most importantly, Celie's attachment to Shug helps to bring about her liberation and her achievement of a sense of self. Sewing in The Color Purple represents the power that women can gain from directing their energies to something productive. Sofia suggests making a quilt with Celie after they have an argument. Her gesture signals a truce between the two. The quilt that they make is composed of diverse patterns; this could symbolize different people with different personalities coming together for a purpose. With Shug's help, Celie's pants-sewing business demonstrates how sewing can be used as an empowering source of income, instead of simply being an unimportant woman's task.

Celie's abusers are somewhat stereotypical, violent men; however they can not be dismissed as simply evil. Her abusers are violent because they are also victims. Harpo, Celie's stepson, begins to beat his wife, Sofia, after his father suggests that he is lesser man because Sofia resists him. Surprisingly, Celie advises Harpo to beat Sofia. Later the reader finds out that it is because she is envious of Sofia's energy and boldness. Celie's husband is abusive because of the way his own father treated him. The characters are aware of the cycle of violent behavior. Sofia tells Eleanor Jane that pressures from society make it almost unavoidable that her little boy will be racist (Walker 7). Only by standing up to the men who abuse them do the women of The Color Purple interrupt the cycle of sexism and violent behavior. Celie tells her husband, following her discovery of herself and freedom

"I curse you… Until you do right by me, everything you touch will crumble… Until you do right by me… everything you even dream about will fail… Every lick you hit me you will suffer twice… You better stop talking because all I'm telling you ain't coming just from me… The jail you plan for me is the one in which you will rot in" (Walker 1).

Celie's resistance to her husband's abuse shows her new found independence. Many characters shatter the traditional boundaries of male and female gender roles. Harpo's lack of confidence, Shug's sexual boldness, and Sofia's strength are key instances of differences in a character's gender and the behaviors they exhibit. Harpo, like Celie, is a victim of his hather's abuses, both physically and emotionally (Guiterrez). He tried to beat Sofia, but she would hurt him more than could hurt her. This is unusual, since the woman is usually thought of as being the weaker vessel, especially in domestic violence. The hazing of gender traits and roles sometimes allows one to find happiness in places never thought about, previously, for example, the relationship between Celie and Shug. The sexual relationship between Celie and Shug gives Celie a sense of empowerment. Her experience with Shug marks the first time that sex actually has a meaning for her. Previously, it was simply something that was done to her, something used to degrade her. Her feelings didn't matter to her husband; he would "git up there and enjoy himself just the same. No matter what I'm thinking. No matter what I feel. It just him. Heartfeeling don't even seem to enter into it" (Walker 6). This new experience and meaning gave her the power to break free from the restraints of male supremacy. The disturbance of gender roles can also cause problems. Harpo's lack of confidence leads to problems in his marriage with Sofia and his efforts to beat her. Similarly, Shug's confidence and opposition to male control causes her to be regarded as a tramp. Walker emphasizes throughout the novel that sexuality and gender are not as simplistic as most believe. The novel challenges the conventional ways that men and women are understood to behave.

Walker attempts something new and different in The Color Purple. Some react positively to the portrayal of African Americans in the novel, while others disagree with its depictions. Barbara Smith states in her review of the book

"Most gratifyingly, no Black novelist until Alice Walker in The Color Purple has positively and fully depicted a Lesbian relationship between two black women, set in the familiar context of a traditional Black community. The Color Purple is a breakthrough in Black literature, because Walker so succinctly names the unnameable that Black women have at times been brutally and matter-of-factly oppressed by Black me, that they have suffered from sexism as well as from racism, and that Black women's love for each other has formed the bottom line of our survival. The quality of our love has made all our livesBlack women's, men's and children'sworth living. Period" (170).

Jacqueline Bobo's article, "Sifting Through the Controversy Reading The Color Purple" states that "the objective of the criticisms against The Color Purple is to protect the turf of those who have set themselves up as 'guardians of the Black image'" (8). Also in Bobo's article, it is cited that Pauline Kael of The New Yorker declares that Alice Walker "got away with 'rampant female chauvinism'" (4). Walker is also criticized for identifying social issues such as race, sexism, and domestic violence in the novel.

"Sophia's violent behavior obviously foregrounds issues of race and class, as even critics who find these issues marginalized elsewhere in The Color Purple. But it is not only through Sophia's dramatic public battles with white men that her story dramatizes issues of race and class. Her domestic relationship with Miss Eleanor Jane and the other member of the mayor's family offers a more finely nuanced and extended critique of racial integration, albeit one that has often been overlooked" (Selzer 7). Elliot Butler-Evans praises Walker's treatment of sexual oppression saying "that Celie's personal letters serve precisely as a 'textual strategy by which the larger African-American history, focused on racial conflict and struggle, can be marginalized by its absence from narration'" (Selzer 67).

Trudier Harris offers some interesting comments on the criticisms of Walker's novel

"…the novel has been so much praised that critics, especially black women critics, have seemingly been reluctant to offer detailed, carefully considered criticisms of it. While that may be explained in part by the recent publication of the novel and by the limited access black women critics traditionally have had to publishing outlets, these possible explanations are partly outweighed by the fact that the novel has been so consistently in the public eye that it takes great effort not to write about it. The Color Purple silences by its dominance, a dominance perpetuated by the popular media. Those who initially found or still find themselves unable to speak out perhaps reflect in some way my own path to writing about the novel…To complain about the novel is to commit treason to black women writers, yet there is much in it that deserves complaint" (155).

Marcellus Blount states in her review that, "Although ignorance, poverty and moral fallibility litter the various landscapes of the world…faith in God's sense of beauty reveal both how the novel's characters manage to survive and why" (118).

In Alice Walker's The Color Purple, Celie, a young African American woman, speaks to her audience, God, to give the chronicle of her life. This chronicle of her life casues the reader to address serious social issues, such as racism, sexism, and abuse. As the novel progresses, one may see the change as she matures, finds freedom, and gains insight on life.

ROBIN HOOD CASE

1. Robin and the Merry Men are faced with a myriad of problems. First and foremost is the price of 1000 pounds on Robins

head. Although Robin may be loved by the general population, a reward of such a substantial amount may sway the loyalty

of some people. Additionally, mercenaries and bounty hunters are sure to be enticed by the reward making Robins ability

to keep on living somewhat more challenging. The growing size of the number in the Merry Men makes it a relatively easy

task to infiltrate the band and make an attempt on Robins life. The growing size also creates a bigger problem in keeping

the band well-fed and well-hidden. The availability of game is steadily decreasing, making feeding the men more difficult.

Also, while it is easy to hide a small group of men in the forest, the larger number of men makes hiding much harder. The

ability to finance his operations is also decreasing as the wealthy travelers have learned to avoid Sherwood Forest. Finally,

Robins primary advantage, his knowledge of Sherwood Forest, is quickly being matched by agents of Prince John.

. Regardless of what Robin decides to do, the sheriff will continue to hunt him. This is a guarantee. The ability of the forest

to sufficiently feed his men has been weakened and will take time to be restored even if he reduces the size of the Merry

Men. The lack of wealthy travelers in the vicinity of Sherwood will also affect future funding. Additionally, the increased

knowledge of Prince Johns men about Sherwood will require the Merry Men to travel more often to avoid detection,

eliminating the ability to have a base camp. This will lead to more exposure to the elements and may have a negative effect

on the general morale of the men. This is especially important to consider during the winter months.

. Robin is considering several possibilities

A) Charging a simple transit tax for traveling through Sherwood

B) Simply killing the sheriff

C) Joining the nobles loyal to King Richard and attempting to free King Richard from prison

Some additional possibilities that are available to Robin

A) Give up the fight and leave the country

B) Assassinate Prince John and hope for a good successor

C) Split the Merry Men up into different, independent groups

D) Have the nobles loyal to King Richard finance his operations

4. The first three possibilities are discussed in the actual case reading and indicate the basic reactions from those actions.

The additional possibilities, labeled A-D will be discussed below.

A) The Merry Men will react very strongly against this suggestion. They are free men would not have joined if they were

not willing to die for Robins cause. To simply give up would not be acceptable and even if Robin left them, they would

probably continue to fight (and die because of a lack of proper leadership). The sheriff would be estastic. However, he

would probably maintain the reward on Robin because of his hatred for him. The sheriff would also be able to commit

atrocities against the people unhindered. The people would be devastated. Their icon of hope and salvation would be

destroyed and their lives would have no meaning.

B) The Merry Men would probably agree to this possibility but with reservation. The risks involved would be very great and

there would be no guarantee that Prince Johns successor would any better. The sheriff would react to any attempt on

Prince Johns life with extreme tactics. The sheriff would lay waste to everyone and everything that he could in order to

destroy Robin and the Merry Men. The people would probably agree that Prince John deserved to die, but would

wonder if his successor would be any better. As with most oppressed people, they would rather keep the hardships

they already know than risk the possibility of facing even worse hardships.

C) The Merry Men would probably agree to this idea. The biggest problem would be providing the necessary leadership for

each independent group. Obviously, everyone would want to be in Robins group. The sheriff would not react well to

this. Instead of one group of men to worry about, he would suddenly have several groups causing problems

everywhere. He would lose even more control of the state of affairs and probably would resort to extreme tactics to

wipe out the groups. The people would probably react badly to this. They know and trust Robin. They know he is a

good person and leader. They will not know the new leaders to the same extent and may feel betrayed by Robin for

splitting the Merry Men up.

D) The Merry Men would probably agree to this although they may have some reservations about accepting funding from

the people who they were supposed to be robbing. The sheriff would be livid about this if he found out and the resulting

carnage from his and Prince Johns efforts would be unbound. The people would probably never be aware of where the

funding was coming from and would have no reason to know.

5. I think Robin should do several things. He should first have the nobles start financing his operations (by conveniently

allowing themselves to be robbed near Sherwood). Not only will this solve his monetary problems, but will also ensure the

nobles support for his cause. I would split the Merry Men up into groups and assign them specific tasks to do, specifically

the removable of any man with intimate knowledge of Sherwood from Prince Johns ranks. This would reduce the number

of men in one spot and eliminate the knowledge threat. I would look into the possibility of assassinating Prince John and

talk to my noble allies about the possible successors. If the successor appears to be an improvement and the assassination

can take place with a reasonable guarantee of success then the assassination would be attempted. I would also look into

the possibility of freeing King Richard very discreetly. I would not make any direct attacks against the sheriff and would

continue the usual practice of Rob from the rich and give to the poor.

A Worn Path by Eudora Welty, is the story of the unstoppable love and care of a grandmother for her grandchild. The description of Phoenix Jackson at the beginning of this story gives the reader a clue of how hard this trip is going to be for an old woman such as her. She supports herself with a cane, striving not to fall with every step she takes. She wears a "dress reaching down to her shoe tops" along with"an equally long apron of bleached sugar sacks, with a full pocket." This just adds to her difficulties.

First, she has to face an uphill climb. Then, she goes downhill but soon finds herself stuck with a bush, and she does not want to rip her dress. She talks to the bush saying Thorns, you doing your appointed work. Never want to let folks pass, no sir. Old eyes thought you was a pretty little green bush However, she makes herself free from the spine bush. In addition, she faces a barbed-wire fence, which is not easy for anyone, but she still gets through it.

Eventually, a hunter and his dog happen upon her and pull her out of the passage. He also tries to stop her from finishing her trip. He tells her that she is too old, and even tries to scare her with his gun. The man even says, you must be a hundred years old, and scared of nothing...you take my advice and stay home, and nothing will happen to you." Not even these words from the hunter could make Phoenix give up, always getting herself out of a mess, and having her grandson as a reason to keep going.

Walking across a log with her eyes closed is another daring thing she tries. During the story, she shows a sign of visions including her meeting of a scarecrow which she originally thinks is a man. When Phoenix reaches her goal, she then knows that her grandson isn't dead.

In conclusion, Phoenix Jackson meets many hard times along her trip, but somehow handles to get through them. Her determination in the face of great obstacles is very good considering her age and bad health. This story reminds the reader over and over that she really loves her grandson, and that she is determined to overcome any obstacle to reach her goal. The only thing that keeps her from giving up is the love she has for him and the fact that all they have in this world is each other.

It was cold, bubbly. IT turns white and yellow, warm and cold. It bubbled, foamed and fizzed.

Silicon Dioxide

And

Sodium Hydrogen Carbonate It got bubbly and warm It got cold, and the silicon did not mix in.

Conclusion

Through our experiment we were able to identity the specific reactions of the individual chemicals. We found out that when calcium chloride was added it made it hot and gave off gas. Silicon Dioxide added nothing to the mixture, and would not mix in. Sodium Hydrogen Carbonate, when added, made the mixture cold. In conclusion, we found that every chemical and their combinations caused different reactions causing different products.

Questions

1. List 5 types of evidence for a chemical reaction. Which did you observe in this experiment?

. Matter is not created nor destroyed. Also, no element changes into a different element in a chemical reaction. How then are new substances with new properties produced in chemical reactions?

New substances with new properties are produced in chemical reactions because different elements and chemicals mixed together form a new substance. New substances are produced in chemicals reactions, but the chemicals do not change they are just mixed together. In this experiment their reactions did not change they just differed on the various reactions of other elements that they were mixed with..

. Were the observations you made qualitative or quantitative? Explain.

The observations that we made were qualitative. They were qualitative because our observations pertained to quality; determining the nature of component parts. Qualitative observations rely more on your senses, rather than measuring tools.

INTRODUCTION

In this millennium, business organizations are continuously facing multitude of competition. Companies must deal with challenges such as how best to approach their rivals, rapid technological change, the emergence of new industries and serving their customers. Thus, to survive and succeed in this millennium, the need to build and sustain competitive advantage will be greater than ever.

Airline industry is a highly competitive industry. Nowadays, in order to survive and develop, more and more airline companies are searching for competitive advantages. Generally, for an airline company, competitive advantage can be gained through two ways improving customer service and cutting down operational costs.

In this project, the focus will be on how international airlines companies achieve competitive through quality of service and lower cost. First, British Airways' service strategy will be discussed. Second, Southwest Airline's low cost strategy will be considered. After looking at these two parts, a summary of the competitive strategies will be highlighted and commented on.

DISCUSSION

I. How competitive advantages is gained through service

British Airways is the world's largest international passenger airline. Operating more than a thousand flights a day to 160 airports worldwide, it has a fleet of over 00 aircraft and a workforce of 60,000.

In the highly competitive airline market, customer service is a key differentiator. The British Airways reputation has been built upon quality service provided by dedicated workforce. To continue to improve, the airline developed goals and values fundamental to achieving its mission including the provision of personalized service to its most valued customers.

British Airways regards the whole process of obtaining travel information, booking, ticketing and checking in at the airport as important parts of the entire travel experience.

E-ticketing

British Airways was one of the first airlines to offer electronic ticketing in 17. Electronic ticketing replaces the paper ticket with a virtual electronic ticket. All the information thats traditionally printed on a paper ticket is stored electronically on a computer database. Once the passenger makes a reservation and pays for the ticket, theres no need for British Airways or a travel agent to issue a paper ticket. Customers do not have to worry about receiving tickets by post, queuing to have a ticket issued at the airport, or losing their tickets. In addition, the airline saves on the cost of issuing and handling these complex paper documents.

Self-service kiosks

Self-service kiosks enable passengers to access their electronic record by using their Frequent Flyer card or credit card of payment, select their seat from an optional seat map, and print a receipt and their boarding pass -- all in one of six languages of choice. Passengers gain by having a choice of check-in method, and speedier, more convenient service from the kiosk -especially at peak travel times. The new technology is a definite winner with British Airways customers. Over 70% of the transactions at the kiosk are electronic tickets. Its a powerful combination -self-service technology coupled with electronic ticketing- that improves customer service, reduces costs, and provides faster and more efficient passenger processing.

British Airways' First Class Service

As professor Stephen Shaw point out that 'an airline whose marketing strategy is based on targeting both the business and leisure travellers, cannot rely on a cabin configuration aimed at producing the lowest operating cost, instead, they must develop a multiproduct philosophy, one of the manifestations of which is the need to have different classes of service on board their aircraft'.

Generally, a first class service has these following standard

¨ Priority check-in and disembarkation

¨ Use of fast track channel

¨ Use of first class lounge

¨ Complimentary newspapers

¨ Complimentary alcoholic drinks

Ø Delectable choices

First class passengers can get a choice of 0 gourmet dishes, devised by 6 international culinary experts. The first cellar holds the finest wines, champagnes and spirits, and also served the passengers at any time during the flight along with soft drinks, espresso or cappuccino.

Ø Luxurious Facilities.

BA was one of the first airlines to install personal suite like seats, which feature a large table for working or eating, a second mini seat for face to face meetings and eating, and a seat that converts into a full 6 and one half foot bed.

Ø Onboard business facilities

Built-in personal phone can be used to to keep in touch with family, friends or business colleagues. In-seat power and laptop power cables are also designed for businesspeople who wants to continue his work on the plane.

Ø Entertainment

With a personal video player, passengers can have 18 FIRST in-flight video and 1 audio channels, plus over 0 videos to choose from.

II.How competitive advantages is gained through lower cost

Southwest Airlines is the fifth largest airline company in America, operating more than ,100 flights per day and carrying over 44 million passengers a year to 50 different cities all over the United States. Different from British Airways, Southwests competitive strategy is based on one sample notion if you get your passengers to their destinations when they want to get there, on time, at the lowest possible fares, and make darn sure they have a good time doing it, people will fly your airline. In order to find out the reasons why Southwest Airlines can made such a rapid progress in transport market, I made a ticket booking test through some airline companies' web site (Appendix I). I chose the same itinerary (from Los Angeles to Manchester), same date (depart date April 11 and return date April 18), and then I made a conclusion if I choose American Airlines, I need to pay 57.85 dollars for the flights; but if I choose Southwest Airlines, I only need to pay 88.50 dollars for the flights, nearly two hundred dollars lower.

So why can Southwest Airlines offered the customer such a low price? It is no doubt that the low cost strategy is the key point

Ø Limited Passenger Service

i Little or no catering is offered.

ii No preassigned seats for customers. The turnaround process is that deplaning passengers leave by the front door of the aircraft as departing passengers board through the rear door. Departing passengers are encouraged by the flight attendants to sit anywhere that they can find a seat.

i. No baggage transfers

Ø Avoiding Travel Agent

Southwest Airlines encourage passengers to book direct with the airline by phone, or by making on-line bookings through the Internet. As a result, in the year 00, forty-six percent of Southwest's passenger revenue was generated by online bookings via southwest.com, the cost per booking via the Internet was about $1, compared to the cost per booking of $6-$8 through a travel agent.

Ø Using Secondary AirportsSouthwest has a clear policy of avoiding congested hub airports wherever possible. For example, it used the old Love Field airport at Dallas, rather then the huge and busy DFW. Using these old airports also brings benefits to customers in that they tend to be located much nearer to the center of the cities they serve. They tend also to have lower landing fees and allow for short taxi-ing distances and for a ready availability of stand and aircraft parking space.

Ø Short Haul, Point-to-Point Routes and Frequent, Reliable Schedules

i. High number of flights reduces employee idle time between flights

ii. Saturate a city with flights flowering administrative costs per passenger for that city

Ø Standardized fleet of Boeing 77 aircraft

Southwest's fleet consists entirely of Boeing 77s, which are more fuel efficient than the larger airplanes. Having just one type of plane also helps to reduce training costs of pilots and mechanics, and also requires lower inventory levels of spare parts.

Ø High Aircraft Utilization

In Southwest Airlines, high aircraft utilization is achieved by avoiding cargo transportation and by traveling on a point to point basis, which eliminated delays in boarding connecting passengers. As a result, the aircraft utilizations average is between ten and twelve hours per day, while BA achieves just seven hours a day.

Ø Flexible Employees and Standard Planes Aids Scheduling

In Southwest Airlines, workers' contracts were flexible enough to allow them to jump in and help out, regardless of the task at hand. From the time a plane landed until it was ready for takeoff took approximately 0 minutes and required a ground crew of four plus two people at the gate. By comparison, turnaround time at United Airlines was closer to 5 minutes and required a ground crew of 1 plus three gate agents.

III.Discussion

It is obvious that British Airways' success largely depends on their excellent customer service. And Southwest Airline's success depends on their low cost operations. But now there is a question that needs to be considered How can a low cost airline company remain competitive advantage without prejudicing quality? Some people have argued that 'Low Cost = Poor Service'. It is impossible for an airline company to offer the passenger 'the lowest price with the best service', because better customer service will cost extra operational fees". Is that true? In order to find out the answer of this question, we need to look at the customer service part of Southwest Airline's strategy.

As a successful low cost airline company, Southwest Airlines has received the highest customer service ratings in the airline industry over the past two years. Southwest Airline's mission statement is "...dedication to the highest quality of customer service delivered with a sense of warmth, friendliness, individual pride, and company spirit".

Ø All Southwest employees must receive mandatory service training every year. As part of Southwests people department, a number of specialized courses are offered to Southwest employees and managers through Southwests University for People. These include courses on customer service, team building, decision making, employee relations, performance appraisal, communications, stress management, safety, and career development. Thus, with these training course, to let their employees understand the company, its mission, its customers and competitors.

Ø The company also has various award and recognition programs which recognize Southwest employees for their exceptional customer service. Flamboyant CEO Herb Kelleher, who has announced plans to step down in 001, has created a highly participative corporate culture..

Ø Southwest only laid off three people in 5 years and it immediately hired them back. This employee retention policy has contributed to employees' feeling of security and fierce sense of loyalty.

From these strategies we can see that the center of customer service is 'people', not extra operational fees, dedicated employees and the corporate culture are the intangible assets for a company.

CONCLUSION

A service industry is one that provides an intangible product rather than a physical end product. In the airline industry, the product is the complete air-travel experience.

Building customer loyalty through outstanding customer service is a critical component of British Airways' strategy for continued growth and success in the highly competitive air travel industry.

Effective operations, cost control activities, corporate culture and employee's loyalty are the key factors in an airline company's success.
