Final Paper

A beautiful young performer named Britany Spears and well known singer named Madonna. What do these two Hollywood stars have in common? In this paper I hope to present the many ways these two singers musical careers are alike.

Madonna Louise Ciccone was borne August 16, 158 in Bay City Michigan. Throughout her high school and brief college experiences Madonna excelled in dance and drama. Madonna started her career off by modeling, which then led her to moving to France. Two years later after arriving in France she joined a show with Patrick Hernandez, a disco singer. This is where Madonna met a man by the name of Dan Gilroy. Both Madonna and Gilroy became part of a band called "The Breakfast Club." It wasn't until 180 when Madonna and drummer boyfriend received their first Emmy. Together, Madonna and Gilroy made club tracks which in return led to a recording deal with Sire Records.

In 18 Madonna made her first U.S. club hit with the recorded song "Everybody." A year later her song "Holiday" reached the Top 0 and a following year after that the Top 10 in Europe. But it wasn't until 184 when Madonna recorded her well known hit "Like A Virgin" which received 11 U.S. number one hits. After this song came out her tough, independent, sexual persona was now being seen by audiences every where. Some thought that she was in fact trying to mimic Marilyn Monroe's image. (wwwVH1.com)

Through 185 to 187 Madonna turned out five Top singles, "Without You", "Into the Groove", "Live to Tell", "Pappa Don't Preach", and "True Blue". Along with her music career, Madonna began appearing in some rather awful movies. But after filming some poorly reviewed movies she added more controversy by releasing the video for "Like a Prayer." In this video it created links between "religion and eroticism", it was later condemned by the Vatican and Coca Cola cancel their sponsorship with Madonna. (www.VH1.com)

In 10 her career once again progressed, Madonna starred in the blockbuster movie "Dick Tracy." Along with her movie success Madonna also turned out some music hits such as "Vogue", "Hanky Panky", "Justify My Love", "Rescue Me", and my all time favorite "This Used To Be My Playground" (from the movie A League of Their Own, which she had a role in). Later on in the 10s Madonna returned with another number one single "Take a Bow." This song now changed her music style from more to just pop music, she now had songs that had pop, R&B, and hip-hop. Then she came with a slower type of rhythm, presenting the song "You'll See."

Madonna came up with another way to shock the American public besides racy lyrics and videos, she now mellowed out and starred in the movie/musical Evita. That same year she became pregnant with her first child Eva Ciccone Leon. The public soon realized how Madonna had matured and learned a new richness of music. She came back strong with songs "Ray of Light" and "Nothing Really Matters." In addition she produced the song "Beautiful Stranger" for the movie Austin Powers The Spy Who Shagged ME. Another well known song she came out with later that year was the reworking of the classic "American Pie." When talking about recent works of music she performed the theme song for the new James Bond movie Die Another Day, which she also had a minor roll in. Finally her most recent song that has just come out this month is "American Life."

Now that I have given an overview of Madonna's music career, I will now talk about Briteny Spears. Britney Jean Spears was born on December , 181 in a small town named Kentwood, Louisiana. Briteny's first professional career began when she was 8 years old, she tried out for the Mickey Mouse Club. Although producers said she was too young, one producer spotted her potential and he found her an agent in New York. She then spent the next three years studying at the Dance Center and at the Professional Performing Arts School in New York. With this new found education of performing arts she landed a part in the off-Broadway production "Ruthless."

At the age of eleven, Briteny's was signed onto the Mickey Mouse club for two years until the cancellation of the show. When the show was cancelled she returned home and went to school for a year, but she could not handle being out of the "biz." A executive at Jive heard a demo tape by Briteny's at 15 years old and signed her. By 18, her first album actually became complete with the oh so famous song "Hit me Baby One More Time" which became a number one spot on the Billboard charts. Because her song was one of the best selling albums of that year, she earned a Grammy nomination for "Best New Artist."(Briteny's Spears Web)

Briteny's second album, which appeared in 000, sold 1. million copies the first week of its release (which beat Mariah Carey's record for the highest first-week sales). The main song that gained her a nomination for the Best Pop Vocal Album and Best Female Pop Vocal Performance at the 4rd Annual Grammy Awards, this album was "Oops!..I Did It Again." It wasn't until her second album, which was self titled Briteny, that she started getting bad publicity. People began attacking her newly sexual appearance, claiming that she was a bad roll model for kids. The truth was that Briteny grew up and stopped producing the "bubble-gum pop" and moved toward techno type songs. These new popular songs are "Im A Slave 4 U", "Overprotected", "I'm Not a Girl, Not Yet a Woman." Two song in which appeared in her movie debut Crossroads. Her latest song "Boys" was made for the movie Austin Powers Goldmember (which she had a small cameo in).

Now you might be asking yourself what do these two artists have in common? They both started off their careers at a young age, both studying performing arts. They both have been ridiculed for their raciness of their songs and appearances (although they both have a good amount of number one records). Lastly these two performers have changed the dynamics of there songs. Madonna went from just pop type music to R&B, hip-hop, and now rap and Briteny went from the "bubble-gum pop" to techno style pop.

accomplished in a rapid amount of time.

The song "Fast Car" by Tracy Chapman, deals with a

womans struggle to make a better life for herself and her

partner. The singer portrays life with speed, because, it's

known that with motion, one can get far. She journey through

her past life, takes us to the present; a life in which she

is still trying to achieve.

In the first verse, she quotes, "You got a Fast Car,maybe together we can go somewhere, anyplace is better."

This means, with "A Fast Car" they can explore a place, in

which they both can obtain a better life, other than the one

they pertain to. She states, "Starting from zero got nothing

to lose." She is trying to influence her partner to jouney

the adventure she is reaching for. She is attempting to run

from her past and make a life in which will suit her and her

partner.

In the second paragraph, the verse explains, the reason

she plans to leave. For example, "You got a fast Car, I've

been working at a convenience store, we won't have to drive

too far, you an I both can get jobs and finally see what it

means to be living." It seems that she is trying to start a

life with her partner without having to explain her reasons

to anyone. When she mentions her works it's for two reason

1) She is trying to show her partner that she is a hard

worker. ) It something that she feels obligated to do. It

appears that she wants to be living a life without say, a

life in which she can manipulate.

The third verse, mentions her reason for working and

not attending school. As I had mentioned previously, she

felt obligated to work to support her father. Her father had

a physical appearance of an elder person because of the

abuse of alcoholism. Her mother left her father because she

wanted more than he offer. She mentions, "My mama went off

and left him, she wanted more from life than he could

offer." She then felt liable over him. Her last verse states

"So I quit school and thats what I did." A reasonable

explanation in my part, but a ongoing effort can be done.

"We gotta make a desicion we leave tonight or live and

die this way." She is telling her partner that she needs to

get away from her sadden memories. She is stating that if

they don't leave that there world will revolve around her

past life. She tells her goals once again. "We'll move out

of the shelter, buy a big house and live in the suburbs."

Assuring herself that with her partner her goals will be

accomplished, and wont have to look back to those sadden

days.

The last verse, she explains her life in the present.

She states that her partner has no job, stays out drinking

late, and sees more of his friends than his kids. She

states, "I'd always hoped for better, Thought maybe together

you and me would find it." Unfortunatley, she left her

sadden life back home, to start a new one in the present.

She is now a replica of what her mother encountered. The

only difference is that the verse says " I got no plans I

aint going anywhere, so take your fast car and keep

driving." There was a twist at the end in comparing it to

her mother desision. She decided to stay and continue her

life although it seems she didn't get out of life what she

wanted.

Concluding, she mention " You got a fast car, you got

to make a desion you leave now or live and die this way." I

understand that this quote is saying that she ahs the job

and ability to continue living on and if he chooses he can

leave or live the way in which she is striving for as a

survivor of her past encounters.

Satire or Logic?

A Satire can be defined as the use of sarcasm, wit and irony in ridiculing and denouncing human institutions or humanity itself. "A Modest Proposal" by Jonathan Swift is a satirical work that gives an extremely sarcastic solution to the problems that Ireland was having with poverty and overpopulation in the 1700s and focusing on England's economic oppression and nonchalant attitude over Ireland. Jonathan Swift's "A Modest Proposal" is an excellent example of a satire because he has created a piece of literature that uses valid and logical ideas that are also extremely grotesque and immoral to draw attention to the problems of the Irish people.

Swift's description of the economic condition of Ireland equips the reader with a clear view of the hideous conditions of the Irish population, but those conditions are modest compared to the savage conditions the children must suffer. As the reader ponders an expected resolution to the anguish of the children, Swift introduces a valid but disgusting solution. Since the children are being killed by the neglect of Ireland by the English, why not profit from the death of these helpless individuals? To solve the problem of the poverty-stricken and oppressed population of Catholics in Ireland, Swift's essay calmly and rationally proposes that thousands of the children should be killed and eaten. In order to support his proposal, Swift states the benefit for the parents of the children. Not only would the women not worry about getting pregnant and having unsafe abortions, but they will also be treated better by their husbands because having a baby would mean a profit for the family. He adds texture to the logic of his bizarre proposal by stating seemingly factual mathematical accounts of the numbers and ages of those starving, underprivileged children surviving the current conditions of Ireland.

In conclusion, Swift's shocking satire is essentially effective because logically his solution actually makes sense. Selling Irish babies to the oppressing English as food, in strictly business terms, would be more beneficial to all and with the same result. As far-fetched as Swift's proposal seems, it perfectly portrays the concept of England's hideous neglect of the people and the children of the Irish.

AN INTRODUCTION TO AUSTRALIA

Mainland Australia, with an area of 4. million square miles, is the largest island and the smallest continent on Earth. It stretches some 00 miles from its most northern to its most southern point, and about 500 miles from east to west.

In area, Australia is the sixth largest nation after Russia, Canada, China, the United States of America and Brazil. Its population, however, is relatively small (now estimated at just over million). Australias average elevation is 1100 ft, the lowest of all the continents, and its highest point, Mount Kosciuszko, is only 6400ft. What its landforms lack in height they more than compensate for in variety. The giant monolith Uluru (Ayers Rock) and the striking beehive mountains of Purnululu (the Bungle Bungles) in Western Australia attract visitors from many parts of the world

European settlement began in New South Wales in 1788, at Sydney, the nations largest city and host of the 000 Olympic games. Sydneys Harbour Bridge and Opera House are national icons, and its airport is the countrys major international gateway.

Victoria is the smallest of the mainland States but the second most populous and the most densely populated. Its capital, Melbourne, Australias second largest city, hosted the Olympic Games in 156. Victorians enthusiasm for sport is legendary and the nation stops each November for the Melbourne Cup, Australias premier horse race.Queensland stretches from the tropical rain forests of Cape York into the temperate zone. Its northeastern coastline is fringed by the Great Barrier Reef. The capital of Queensland is Brisbane. Three international airports, in Brisbane, Cairns and Townsville, service visitors from overseas.South Australia was established by a private Colonization Commission and received no convicts. The Adelaide Festival, held in the capital every two years, is an international cultural event.

Western Australia is about the size of Western Europe. Almost three-quarters of the States population of 1.85 million live in its capital, Perth.

Separated from the continent by the waters of Bass Strait, Tasmania and its many companion islands form the smallest Australian State. Hobart, the capital, is the destination for the nations premier blue water sailing classic, the annual Sydney-Hobart yacht race.

The Northern Territory has more than twice the land area of France but only a population of less than 00 000. Darwin is the capital and Alice Springs the principal inland town. The Territory contains the Uluru-Kata Tjuta and Kakadu national parks.

The Australian Capital Territory was established within New South Wales in 111 as the site for the national capital, Canberra. It is home to a number of national institutions including the federal Parliament, the National Library, the National Gallery of Australia, the High Court and the Australian War Memorial.

The Australian landscape is highly distinctivevast stony and sandy deserts and tablelands in the west and the center, sweeping plateaus and plains flanking narrow coastal slopes to the east. The coastal areas feature broad sandy beaches and lush vegetation backed by a great variety of landforms, ranging from the steep cliffs of the Blue Mountains west of Sydney and the tall, graceful, eroded volcanic plugs of the Glasshouse Mountains north of Brisbane, to flat plains on the southern coast west of Adelaide.

The Murray and Darling Rivers, the longest river system in Australia, form the Murray-Darling Basin covering more than one million square kilometers or 14 per cent of the mainland area. Lake Eyre, a great salt lake more than 000 square kilometers in area near the center of the continental landmass, is dry for lengthy periods.

Much of the country, about 70 per cent, is arid or semi-arid, and a large part of the center is unsuitable for settlement. Eleven principal deserts make up some 0 per cent of the mainland area. More than one-third of the continent is virtually desert owing to its low rainfall.

The national average annual rainfall of 465 mm varies greatly year by year, and is distributed unevenly around the continent. The driest area is the Lake Eyre drainage basin, which averages less than 15 mm annually. The wettest regions are in the tropical northeast and in the southwest of Tasmania.

However, Australia does have well-watered fertile areas close to the coast, where the bulk of the population is settled. Here Australians experience a range of climates from wet and humid tropical conditions in the far north, through warm and temperate on the central east and west coasts, to cooler conditions in the southern coasts and Tasmania. All parts of Australia enjoy warm summers and relatively mild winters, and it seldom snows in or near the large centers of population.

The highest temperature ever recorded in Australia was at Cloncurry, in the northeastern inland, which registered 5°C in 188, while the coldest was -°C at Charlotte Pass, in the snowfields near Mount Kosciuszko, in 14.

A unique environment

When the 18th century English naturalist Joseph Banks first stepped ashore at Botany Bay, he would have felt the thrill of strangeness that succeeding generations have experienced in their first encounter with the Australian bush.

Australia is a land unlike any other. The uniqueness of its animals, plants and landscapes are consequences of a vast, slow accident of geology.

Over the past 45 million years, this old, thick, and very flat continental plate has inched away from Antarctica towards the equator. This journey isolated Australian life forms from other parts of the world and presented them with particular challenges.

Typical Australian landscapes are very old. Soluble nutrients have leached from the surface in many areas, making soils less fertile. Some plant communities may have accelerated this process to reduce competition.

Australia often presents a patchwork of different plant alliances growing side by side, specialized to survive on different types of mother rock and solar aspect. As they evolved, these specialized plant communities provided opportunities for new species of animals to evolve.

Did you know?

Of the 18 000 species of flowering plants found in Australia, 15 000 are found nowhere else in the world. Of the 5 species of mammals (including marsupials) 50 are unique to Australia. About 710 of the 800 Australian reptiles are found nowhere else, and 80 to 0 per cent of the insects and arachnids are unique.

Small relic communities of trees and ferns from the dinosaur era can still be found tucked away in damp, sheltered gullies in the Centre. The previously thought extinct wollemus pine was rediscovered in the Blue Mountains east of Sydney in 14

Australias weather is another driver of evolution.

As the continent moved north, cool moist areas became warmer and drier. The Red Centre now lies in the latitudes where the great deserts of the world occur.

The flat terrain and the El NiƱo weather system of the Pacific have amplified the effects of the slow drift into the arid zone. Much of Australia lacks reliable annual rainfall. In many areas droughts can

Last for years.

Surviving in Australia has meant enduring tough times, rather than expanding rapidly during favorable conditions. So the typical Australian ecosystem often has less total biomass and more species than ecosystems on other continents.

Tough conditions caused ecological systems to collapse on a large scale. Then landscapes were recolonised through the evolution of a small number of surviving plant families.

Eucalypt trees belong to the genus Myrtaceae. Over half the species of Myrtaceae in the world are found in Australia, where they filled ecological niches that belong to other plant families on other continents.

The need to be able to survive tough times has favored animals with lower metabolic ratesreptiles and marsupials. The fossil record suggests that placental mammals may have existed in Australia but failed to survive.

The arrival of humans

Humans arrived on the Australian continent more than 60 000 years ago.

Before people arrived, large marsupials and flightless birdsmegafaunabrowsed in forests and savanna grasslands that contained many fire-sensitive species. Some think that a recent ice age erased the big animals and their habitats.

Top predators in the megafauna era included a goanna-like lizard feet long, a very large python and a lion-like marsupial.

The nutrients in these ecosystems were quickly recycled through the guts of grazing animals. This builds up soils that can retain moisture and produce recycled rain. This may explain why the Centre was much lusher until recent times. Some think that a recent ice age erased the big marsupials and their habitats. However, according to Dr Tim Flannery, the Director of the South Australia Museum, the early hunters took out the big animals. The forests and savannas they ate became overgrown. Then widespread fires devastated these plant communities and fire-thriving species like eucalypts replaced them. There is some evidence that Aboriginal peoples burned a patchwork pattern in the fire-thriving bush to create habitat for different kinds of animals. But whatever the roles of early hunters in altering the ecosystems they entered, there is no doubt traditional Indigenous societies did develop a sustainable equilibrium with the country where they lived.

Conserving the natural heritage

In recent years, more attention has been given to using traditional methods to maintain the habitat for native animals.

Kakadu and Uluru-Kata Tjuta national parks in the Northern Territory and Booderee National Park in the Jervis Bay Territory south of Sydney are jointly managed with their Aboriginal owners.

Since the early 10s, ecosystem-based regional planning frameworks have been developed. This work seeks to ensure that the full range of ecosystems is taken into account in establishing protected areas to conserve biodiversity.

Indigenous people and private landowners are involved in this national effort. The total area under protection has grown rapidly, and a number of national parks have been declared, primarily to protect endangered species. This contrasts with the former policy of making parks out of areas considered useless for grazing, agriculture or forestry.Problems with algal bloom in river systems and rising salinity in irrigated land have prompted debate about sustainable agriculture. Coastal development has caused concerns about environmental degradation.

Australians concern about environmental issues is real and effective. In cities recycling is well established and household solid waste is being reduced

· Australia has about 5800 land and marine areas under protection.

· When Australian yachtsman Ian Kiernan saw garbage on the oceans he acted. He started the Clean Up Australia movement, which has gone global, changing behavior around the world.

Climate change

Australia has long recognized that climate change is a global phenomenon with potentially adverse implications for the environment. In particular, Australia is concerned about the impact on the Small Island states in the Indian and Pacific oceans, as well as the impact of Australias natural environment and economy.

With the adoption of the Kyoto protocol in December 17, Australia, along with other developed countries agreed to limit future greenhouse gas emissions. As part of this, the Australian Government has allocated almost $1 billion in funding to reduce emissions in areas such as energy production, transport, (Already today all of the buses and taxicabs in Sydney are fueled by natural gas), land use and forests through the development of new technologies and new practices. This builds on existing approaches that encourage greater energy efficiency, along with product reuse and recycling.

Australias position at ongoing international climate change negotiations is to ensure that the Kyoto protocol is effectively implemented in a way that encourages all countries to reduce emissions. This important environmental goal will be best achieved by minimizing the economic costs of emission reduction.

"It is in justice that the ordering of society is centered" Aristotle

Justice; the word in itself means to conform to the law. But who or what does the law have to conform to? In the novel, "A Time to Kill" by John Grisham many questions are answered such as, do people have the right to take justice into their own hands? And, is the Criminal Justice system colorblind?

Clanton, Mississippi. The life of a ten year old black girl is shattered by two drunken and remorseless young men when she is brutally raped and left to die. The mainly white town reacts with shock and horror at this inhumane crime. That is until her black father vows revenge and takes justice into his own hands. As Pete Willard and Billy Ray Cobb leave the courtroom on the first day of their trial, they are shot and killed by Carl Lee Hailey the father of Tonya, the little girl raped. In shooting these men, Carl Lee also shot and wounded a police officer. Now the guilt is on Carl Lee, as he is arrested and put on trial for the murder of the two rapists. Young Jake Brigance, struggling to keep his law practice afloat, suddenly finds himself defending the now famous Carl Lee against murder charges. Ellen Roark, a top of the class law student from Ole Miss, offers her services to Jake, for no fee, just for the opportunity to become part of a most likely death penalty conviction, which she is so much against. The trial becomes nation wide news, and soon the Klu Klux Klan has become involved and begins threatening the county with burning crosses and death threats. Burning crosses, attempts the blow up his house, and even gun him down give Jake enough reason to make his wife and child leave to stay with their parents. With the news of the big trial, over one hundred citizens of Clanton are sequestered for jury duty. Form these one hundred, ten white and two black citizens are chosen.

An old boss of Jake's gives needed advice to prepare him for trial and also supplies the name of a psychiatrist who can be easily bribed. While on trial, the past of Dr W.T. Bass comes back to hurt the trial for Jake, when the courts become aware of his past statutory rape conviction. But Jakes enemy, Rufus Buckley, the district attorney, does not know that Jake can talk his way out of any situation. And because of this he is able to convince the jury that his witness is still credible. Meanwhile, the K.K.K is becoming more active and eventually Jake becomes aware of this when his house is burnt to the ground. The black churches around Mississippi show their support for Carl Lee by rallying in the court yard against the K.K.K. After two weeks of constant trials the jury cannot reach a verdict because the two black jurors will not allow themselves to convict a man for a crime in which he was, in their minds, lawful in doing. While in their final deliberation, the jury can hear the commotion outside the courthouse between the followers of the K.K.K. and the black people as they fight to let their opinions known. In a deadlock the jury has no idea on what to do, until Wanda Crowell steps forth and asks the jury to close their eyes, and picture something in her heads. A white girl being raped by two black men, who are later shot and killed by the father. They are asked to vote as if Carl Lee was the father of that little white girl. Court is in session and the jury is asked to read the verdict. Not only is Jake sweating but also the district attorney, Buckley. This decision not only affects the life of Carl Lee, but also can make or break their careers. The jury finds the "defendant not guilty." This is a win for the black citizens of Ford County, and also for Jake Brigance.
