What is the first thing you do when you see someone you don't know? You identify the person based on the way they look. The old saying, "you can't judge a book by its cover," doesn't have much effect on you. You start making assumptions about the person's identity by the shoes and clothes they wear. That's what I make my assumptions off of. After I look at the clothes and shoes I consider the person a skater, jock, preppy or a geek (brains), without ever interacting with the person. What is it that makes me identify these people into different groups?

I dress according to what type of music and activities I do, so I assume everyone else does. That is why I make these assumptions about people. And there seems to be an association between their dress and their activities. Let's talk about the jocks and how I classify someone as a jock. I see them as the big men on campus, wearing clothes that represent their team and sport they play. They usually wear athletic shoes of some kind. I notice Nike's and Adidas most of the time. The hair style can have a wide range of style, ranging from shaved to long. I see more skaters in my opinion than any other group. Skaters have the grunge look, the clothes that are frayed. The shirts are worn kinds tight, and they sag their pants. The skaters wear skater shoes, which are brands like Globe and Etnies. Skaters have a distinct style of hair. Some of them wear it short and spike, and others have it long and everywhere. The differences in dress is one way these groups distinguish their selves from other people, it signifies who they are.

There are two other groups I categorize people into, which would be the preppies and the geeks (brains). When I see someone who wears Polo Ralph Lauren, Tommy Hilfiger or any designer brand clothes, I start to consider them a preppy. I classify preppies when I see someone with khaki's on with a designer brand collared shirt tucked in. I see preppies having a proper hair cut, with everything in its place. The geeks (brains) are easy to classify. Geeks are the kids who don't fit in any group they have their own style, which tends to be out of style. If it was ever in style, they seem to never match and care much about their appearance. This kind of reflects the activities they do, nothing.

The way someone dresses is a reflection of their personality I think. They wear clothes that represent their culture whether they are a jock, skater, preppy or geek. People judge one another based on the way they look because most people dress in a fashion that reflects their colors as person. I think the way I dress resembles a lot about my nature so I naturally think other people dress to resemble their nature. That is why I make the assumptions I do about jocks, skaters, preppies and geeks. The jocks are the big muscular guys who show their team spirit. While the skaters are representing the grunge look with the wild hair and the frayed clothes. The preppies have their collared shirt tucked in and khaki pants, and the geeks are not matching with no style and any care for their appearance. Those are my assumption for identifying and classifying people into categories. The style of dress and hair style identify these people as who they are based on what they do, and the music they listen to I think.

The film Pretty Woman, starring Julia Roberts and Richard Gere, tells a story of a rich upper class businessman who falls in love with a Los Angeles prostitute. The film follows the interaction between Edward Lewis, who has a high social standing, and Vivian Ward, who is deemed as belonging to the lowest class of society. These essentially superficial positions in society give an insight into the nature of the interaction between the characters throughout the film. As a result of their business-turned-personal relationship, Vivian is subsequently launched into a world of self-worth and social rank, as Edward comes to the realization of the importance of compassion in his life. This idealistic theme sums up the fairytale attitude the characters hold for themselves throughout the movie.

The prevalent themes expressed in the film show that the popular culture of the period centres upon money and sex, as do the lives of the characters. This attitude is conveyed many times throughout the film, including the opening scene which following is stated "Its all about the money". Consumerism is directly related to both money and sex, and the film shows how consumerism affects the class structure of society. The importance of appearances is a central theme of the film, and is used to signify the change in the social standing of Vivian into a worthy member of society, with the adorning of new and expensive clothes

Throughout the film Pretty Woman, the idea of money and the value of money in a modern society are heavily used to create meaning for the viewer. As a prostitute, Vivian is required to sell herself for money, as Edward seeks money in the business world without regard for personal circumstances. Both the lives of Vivian and Edward revolve around money, and the film shows that money derives social worthiness and value in society in this period of time. Vivian is viewed as less worthy because of her lack of money, and therefore Edward as of higher social standing. This attitude shows the materialistic culture of the period, where money is the defining feature of social standing.

When 'taken in' by Edward, Vivian is seen to undertake a transformation from a mere hooker to a valued member of society, not only in the eyes of the characters, but also in the eyes of the viewers. She is seen to wear increasingly expensive clothes in order to raise her appearances, as consumerism is portrayed as a mark of the wealthy/worthy. By means of a simple sum of money, Vivian's outlook on life is totally altered, by which she is seen to become more responsible and in control of her life, without the restraints of a lower class. This illustrates the popular culture of the time that money makes dreams come true. Her appearances give her some type of worthiness that she didn't have before, as she increases her money and therefore social worth.

Do my essay on Pretty Woman Film Evaluation CHEAP !

This is supported in the numerous scenes where Vivian is seen to do something unexpected, which would normally be seen as embarrassing or improper, and is dismissed with joyful giggling and is disregarded on the whole, as she changes from 'rags to riches'. This idea shows that although she still has the mannerisms and social skills of a prostitute, her appearances and money outweigh her lack of 'class' is society. The audience is led to believe that she is of better character because she does not carry the same behavioural mannerisms as her wealthy counterparts, and that her differences are endearing or cute. This theme is portrayed in the scene at the opera, where Vivian comments that she nearly 'peed herself' in response to the performance. Her apparent innocence and child-like naivety that would once signify a lack of class now signifies an endearing quality, this change brought on by her change in appearance and her conforming consumerist attitude.

Almost all of the characters actions in the film are driven by want for money or the presence consumerism. The characters that hold the most economic value also hold the most social power, as with Edward, and are constantly in positions of power throughout the film. This Marxist like view is prominent throughout the text, as a group of people, in this case - females, are forced to rely on the males for support. This is evident in the movie as a whole Edward rescues Vivian, which also conforms to the common fairytale/romantic comedy structure.

The film Pretty Woman is a simple romantic comedy that gives and insight into the popular culture of the 180s. Its materialistic aspects and clear class structures are illustrated in the retelling of a superficial and money driven storyline that shows the importance of money and sex in the way society functions at the time, and how it differentiates class according to appearances.

Everglades Restoration

Introduction

The Florida Everglades, the world's second largest wetland, is on border of being lost due to many factors. To fight these factors, the Everglades Restoration Plan has become a major issue in Florida over the last twenty-five to thirty years. As a matter of fact, the Everglades National Park was established in 147. However, there is a lot of work to be done if we want to save the Everglades. A majority of the problem has been blamed on the farmer, that being the phosphorous runoff. Secondly, the Florida Bay is being killed by the amount of fresh water entering it. Many rules have been set in place and many organizations are taking part in the restoration process.

According to many environmentalists, the 1.5 million acre national park and the area around it are dying of something everyone needs to stay alive and that is good, clean water. In seeking to control flood damage, aid development and help agriculture, engineers over the decades built a vast series of canals, dikes and holding pens to control the waters of the Everglades. The results so far from the actions taken by the engineers have been terrible water shortage and water pollution shortage. Some of the major issues that critics bring up are that too much water is being diverted to other uses in the dry season and that phosphorus in farm runoff is harming the Everglades, although the phosphorus runoff has not been proven to be one of the main reasons.

Help with essay on mercury in the everglades

Literature Review

The point of this study is to inform people who never put forth attention to these issues, and give them some awareness of what they are losing if something is not done about it. It to let them see first-hand what is happening in the Everglades, what the solution is, and how it is to be taken care of.

The level of phosphorous entering the Everglades is part of the problem. Farmers claim that phosphorous is only one of the many problems that are the causes of this restoration attempt. Rainfall has a natural level of phosphorus and is by far the most contributing source; native animal population concentrate phosphorus; and urban shopping malls, residential streets, commercial parking lots, and businesses have four times the phosphorus concentration of farm runoff. A second big concern is Florida Bay. Florida Bay is located south of the Everglades National Park and west of the first three Florida Keys. The problem in this situation is the loss of sixty-eight thousand acres of sea grass habitat from the flowage of fresh water into the bay.

With these two major problems, the environmentalist and the fishing guides that have lived around the Florida Bay for decades are the one noticing the levels of phosphorous entering the Everglades. The Environmentalists are noticing it because they are constantly checking it, and the fishermen because they use to catch lots of fish in the grass flats that have been lost.

To help the process of restoration the Florida legislature passed the Everglades Forever Act (Originally called the Marjory Stoneman Douglas Act). The Everglades Forever Act has some major features. One of them includes a strict phosphorus concentration level. It requires that farmer's achieve a twenty-five percent reduction in phosphorus in water leaving their land. This will cause an overall phosphorus reduction of eighty percent for water entering the Everglades. Farmers are actually keeping phosphorus levels lower than what is required.

The rules brought about by the Everglades Forever Act require action from the Federal government, the South Florida Water Management District, and farmers. The controversy now is if the Federal government has paid its share of the restoration, which they have not. "The Federal government has yet to provide its share for the project, while the South Florida Water Management District and the farmer have already spended considerable dollars on the federal components." The South Florida Water Management District has definitely been doing there part of the funding and the farmers are spending their own money to employ workers knowing the techniques to reduce phosphorus levels leaving their farms.

Methods/Materials

A questionnaire was developed to determine the general; all around knowledge students have towards the Everglades. Students were asked to answer ten questions. Information was analyzed from thirty surveys answered by students enrolled in AEE 0, Technical Writing. The ages of students ranged from eighteen to over thirty. The information collected was organized and put on individual pie graphs (appendix B). The reason the information was individually looked at was because of the broadness of the information presented and looked at by people about the Everglades.

Findings/Results

The analysis of the information revealed that some students are totally blank about the Everglades and some students know quite a bit. The first question on the questionnaire was, "Have you ever visited the Everglades (Appendix A)," and surprisingly only forty-three percent of the students had ever visited the Everglades. The reason it was surprising was because not even half of the students have ever visited the Everglades but answered the questions extremely accurate.

Seventy-three percent of the students wanted the Everglades to be restored. The students also gave some great feedback on the question, "What is your opinion on the Everglades Restoration process? (Appendix A)," more that fifty percent of the students gave positive feed back and actually want something started and get process in the procedure that has to be taken to save the Everglades.

Yet the students seemed to be convinced that the farmers are the main cause of phosphorus runoff. Seventy-Two percent of the students either think that the farmers are not donating a fair share or have not even begun to help. Sixty-five percent of students also think that the majority of the phosphorus runoff comes from the sugar cane farms when it really is a natural thing and comes from the rain.

In reality media has really done its part except for getting the farmer in deeper in the hole than what he really is. Sixty-three percent of students sometime in their life have read or seen an article concerning the Everglades or the restoration of the Everglades. This must be how the students were able to answer the question accurately.

Conclusion/Discussion

Several students ranging in age from eighteen to over thirty answered a ten-question questionnaire for this study. This information was analyzed to see how much general knowledge they might know about the Everglades.

All the information gathered the responses were very interesting and surprising. Of all the students it was not expected that a majority of them have either seen or read about articles concerning the restoration in the Everglades. This was the source of information the relied on when answering these question. That means people care and read things concerning the safety of our natural resources. The reason of assumption that this is where the information is received from is because only forty-three percent of the students had ever visited the Everglades and less than that had ever ridden an airboat or a swamp buggy meaning not even visiting other marshes or swamps.

Something has to be working right because people are concerned and want to save the Everglades. Seventy-three percent of the people would like to see the Everglades restored and have positive responses on the process taking place. One student wrote in response to "What is you opinion on the Everglades Restoration Process," "I think the restoration process is positive because it benefits the ecosystem and helps endangered species." People realize what is being lost and really want to save these sources for other generations to come.

Maybe everyone will realize what a beauty we are losing and come together to decide on how we are going to save it. The only way this is going to work is if everyone works together and quits blaming each other on the problem. If only the citizens of Florida made one visit to the Everglades National Park and took just a ten-minute airboat ride, they would want to help the restoration restoration process of the Everglades.

Dr. Berman,

Sorry that I was not able to make Sean's appointment today. I've noted the couple things I wanted to share with you this morning.

· Sean is responding well to his new medication, it seems to be lasting throughout the day.

· Sean had a rather large fall at the end of the summer, which brought us back into Dr. Cooper's office. He is doing extremely well in counseling as Dr. Cooper continues to work on the "long term" effects of his decisions. He's also confronted the "lying" issues straight up! And is now working on Sean's behavior towards his teachers disrespect, etc.

· For the first time ever I received a phone call from Sean's teacher letting me know, "Sean is doing an exceptional job now in his class". Since the first call, three weeks prior, Sean has made a conscious effort to work things out - and only good things have come from it!

· Sean has a job working to 4 days a week (after school hours & 4 hours on Sunday) with a friend whose office is next door to mine. THEY LOVE SEAN, he is doing an awesome job there.

I've also sent Sean with a book for you! If you haven't read, PLEASE do. This book has been very helpful confirming the feelings I've always had with Sean. (God's timing is perfect that's why I just came across this book now!) Everything Sean and I have been learning in counseling makes much more sense. I only wish that everyone could know what I've learned over these several years, without having to tread the waters of "hard stuff" to get there. Hopefully you can refer this book onto your "kids" and their families to read. I know it will be helpful to all, especially knowing they are in goods hands with you as their child's Doctor.

You may call me if you have any questions regarding Sean's appointment @ (5) 85-8018.

Thanks,

In the Birthmark Hawthorne introduces the character Georgianna whos

soul flaw is a birthmark on her face. Every other characteristic of Georgianna

is perfect. Her husband Aylmer loves science and questions her one flaw, her

birthmark. He suggests that he should try and remove it. When the moment comes

and Aylmer finally does remove her Birthmark, everything evolves. When Aylmer

announces, My peerless bride, it is successful! You are perfect! (167)

Immediately following the removing of the Birthmark, Georgianna dies. Once

again Hawthorne uses a woman as the possessor of an evil characteristic, but it

is Aylmers insistence on trying to distort nature which leads to the death of

his wife. Aylmer is the character who possesses the evil flaw, he insists that

the Birthmark must be removed. And therefore it is obvious that Hawthorne

doesnt direct his evil characteristics only on women.

Evil is at the root of the story in The Birthmark for it is here that

Hawthorne writes about the most sinful character. In all of the seven deadly

sins committed by man; the deadliest of all is pride. Priding ones self is

terrible but carrying this vanity to another can be deadly. After reading The

Birthmark the character Aylmer finds for himself that pride costed him dearly,

he lost his lovely wife. Aylmer is representative of the sin pride. Hawthorne

describes the character in such a way that Aylmer portrays himself as Godlike.

The character Aylmer is evil because according to Hawthorne He had devoted

himself, however, too unreservedly to scientific studies ever to be weaned from

them by any second passion.. Is this the possible pride that leads a man to be

considered evil? Yes, according to evidence in the story Hamthorne makes the

character Aylmer in human by taking away his passion for his wife and having it

replaced by passion for only his work. Hawthorne describes Aylmers

preoccupation with perfecting his wifes beauty in the story when writing At

all the seasons which should have been their happiest, he invariably and

without intending it, nay, in spite of a purpose to the contrary reverted to

this one disastrous topic. . Through this text the author creates a character

that we may see into in order to reveal the one tracked mind. Pride is the

ultimate goal for Aylmar; he intends to make a prize of his wife by trying to

make her extraordinary person and alleviating any blemishes. His wife

Georgianais the innocent victim in the story because she must follow her

husbands wishes. Hawthorne once again writing in his time period made

traditional characters of society and these people were in an average class;

henceforth keeping traditional good and evil characters as in many fiction

stories. Hawthorne has created a couple who are the examples of good and evil;

Georgiana has the mark of innocence upon her and Aylmer carries delusions of

grandeur. Georgiana is admired for her beauty by the publics eye and Aylmer is

envied by the same. Hawthorne tells us outright that the two are not happy but

what must be understood is that because Aylmer is unhappy with her birthmark ,

My peerless bride, it is successful! You are perfect!, ...dearest Aylmer, I

am dying., pays the ultimate price for perfection.

The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn by Mark Twain is a book about the harsh environment and immoral ways of the southern lifestyle. Huck, although being white, feels that the ways of the south are wrong and wants to escape, too. Hence, Huckleberry Finn is a book that shows the journey of two friends of contrasting characteristics fighting the problems in their life and the corrupt ways of the south.

Huck Finn is a boy who is only thirteen years old. Huck is from the lowest levels of white society, and his father is a drunk who disappears for months at a time. He is dirty and is constantly homeless. Huck is an outcast boy who gets into trouble and has different beliefs from which the society he lives in. Many critics agree with the statement, "At the heart of Huckleberry Finn lies a story about real human figures with genuine moral and ethical problems and decisions" (Lane 441). At the beginning of the novel, Widow Douglas is trying to reform Huck. The Widow Douglas "took [him] for her son, and tried to civilize [him]" (Twain 6). However, Huck remains a marginalized member of society. In this novel, Huck fails to get the protection he deserves from his father. His dad is a severe alcoholic and beats Huck. One critic even states, "Huck's relationship with his father is melodrama" (O'Connor 444). Huck's caretakers try to school him and give him the religious training that he has missed, but Huck is not indoctrinated with the same social values as a normal middle-class boy. Huck becomes skeptical of the world around him, and constantly looks to distance himself from it. The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn "is the story of a boy who will not accept the kinds of freedom the world is able to offer, and so flees from them, one after another" (Leary 476). Hucks natural distrust because of his childhood, and his experiences as he travels down the river force him to question the things taught to him as a child. Huck leaves his hometown to go on a journey to find a better life, hide from his dad, and also find freedom for his companion named Jim. Huck feels that many ways of the south are corrupt. According to the law, Jim is Miss Watson's property. Huck knows that he would be "stealing a poor old [woman's] slave" (Twain 04). Huck believes that it is acceptable and also morally good to help Jim. Therefore, Huck risks both of their lives by going on a journey for freedom. Although Huck knows that most people think that he has done "a low down thing" by helping Jim escape for this long, he stills believes that it is the right thing to do (Twain 05). Huck's natural intelligence, his own personal morals, and willingness to think through a situation on its own merits lead him to some contrasting conclusions. In a certain context, they are right, but in others it would shock society's normal beliefs. One example of this is when Huck and Jim meet a group of slave-hunters; he determines that telling a lie is sometimes the right course of action. Throughout their journey, Huck uses his own judgment to figure out what to do and not what he has been taught as a child in the south. This shows that he is an independent person and that he feels that many ways of society are wrong. Hence, he goes on a necessary journey. When the Duke and the Dauphin sell Jim, Huck is about to write to Miss Watson saying where he is. However, Huck rips up the letter and thinks to himself, All right then, Ill go to hell (Twain 186). He believes that going to hell, if it means following his gut and not societys hypocritical and cruel principles, is a better option than going to everyone elses heaven. In this story, "Huck represents what anyone is capable of becoming a thinking, feeling human being rather than a cog in the repressive machine of society" (Pearce 174).

Jim plays the role of a Negro slave in this book. Jim, as well as Huck, is searching for a place of freedom and a new life. Jim is the slave of Miss Watson and becomes friends with Huck. "Jim becomes a surrogate father, as well as a friend, to Huck, taking care of him without being intrusive or smothering" (Smith 474). Jim and Huck develop and special love for one another. The book Huckleberry Finn "has a vindication not only of freedom, but of loyalty and decency, kindness and courage" (DeVoto 465). Jim is treated poorly in this story just because he is a Negro slave and yet endures him as a "the submissive sufferer" (Eliot 46) throughout the story. Because of this, Huck and Jim decide to go on the journey for a new, better life. Jim wants to go north and buy back his family. Jim says, "Po" niggers can't have no luck" (Twain ). However, they still decide to take a chance and go on the journey. In this book, Jim is constantly suffering and having a hard time due to the wrong doings of the southern ways of life. Many people treat him wrongly because of the color of his skin. Jim and Huck try to escape and go on the journey down the river to find a new place for life. Jim desperately wants freedom from the immoral ways of the south and just wants to get back with his family. During the journey down river, Jim is still treated unfairly by the white people. In one instance, Huck and Jim's supposable friends, The Duke and The Dauphin, sell Jim to a white man. Jim and Huck trusts those two people, yet they are betrayed. Huck, referring to the king and duke, says, "these liars warn't no kings nor dukes, at all, but just low-down humbugs and frauds" (Twain 15). Huck then knows that he is "the only [friend] [Jim's] got now" (Twain 06). One critic even states that this book "describes a flight and a struggle for freedom" (DeVoto 465). Jim and Huck's journey was very necessary. The many accounts of harsh behavior towards Jim in this book prove the unacceptable behavior of the southern people. Huck and Jim help each other out and survive the long journey. Many people feel that "Jim [can] be described as the only real adult in the book, and the one who provides a positive, respectable example for Huck to follow" (Lane 44).

The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn is a novel that expresses the feelings that many white people have in the south during that time period. Many Negroes, who are slaves, have been treated terribly. This book is full of corruption in society and bad treatment towards blacks. An example is all the bad things that happen to Jim because he is black. Many whites do not respect him, he is forced to do certain things, and he is treated wrongly. Jim has been sold around and is not treated like a human being. One critic states that this book is full of "the typical American prejudices and easy generalizations about Jim" (Lane 44) because Jim is a Negro. This book teaches the reader of the reality of what happened in our country. Racism occurred throughout the south and was a major problem. In this novel, Huck and Jim express the attitude in which all people should have towards one another, "mutual love of a white man and a colored" (Fiedler 467). The journey that this whole story describes starts when "[Huck] discovers the corruption of society, a process that comes to climax when conscience itself is exhibited as the creature of society, embodying its most cruel mandates" (Warren 448). Huck tries to escape with Jim to find a better place with freedom. They are best friends floating down the river and Jim tells Huck that he was the best friend a guy could have (Twain 6). Mark Twain expresses one aspect of the harshness of the south by constantly using the word "nigger". The southerners show no respect for Negroes and do not give them enough respect to call them by their first name. Also, many people had the opinion that black people were not equal to white people. This is proven when Huck's dad criticizes the government for letting blacks to vote and says, "And they call that govment" (Twain 58). Another example of the harsh attitude towards blacks in this novel is when a little boy from a family shoots a man. Everyone asks if everything is okay and the kid replies, "No'm. Killed a nigger" (Twain ). This shows how poorly the white people thought of the blacks.
