"The Cask of Amontillado"

Italia, a place of indescribable beauty, extravagant foods and wines; another place of duplicity and corruption. Edgar Allen Poe wrote the story, "The Cask of Amontillado" taking place in Italy during the 1800's. The story takes place during a carnival, a place for families and happiness, but Montresor has another plan for the night. The story begins with Montresor swearing revenge upon Fortunato ending in his demise. Montresor tells Fortunato of the Amontillado he has in his family's cellar; Fortunato is lured by his love of wine, especially Amontillado. Montresor leads Fortunato deep in the cellar; his ancestors' remains surround the cellar. This atmosphere creates suspense and tension for the reader. The detail of the atmosphere is so wonderful, and this adds detail to the story. The story ends with Fortunato chained to a wall, waiting for his death. Montresor builds a wall to block him in; it is the deepest room in the cellar where he can never be found. The story is comprised of devious behavior, and blindness to death. Montresor is surrounded by masks at the carnival, but he himself is wearing a mask; a mask to hide his devious side, but perhaps his devious side is also a mask to hide his real self. Montresor is very sarcastic with his words when he says comments like, true true, you won't die of a cough, and solutes Fortunato to his long life ahead of him. These statements are also very ironic because his sarcasm states Fortunato's upcoming demise. Montresor may be hiding behind his deviant side because he doesn't want to face that side. Montresor may be having second thoughts to killing Fortunato when it is said, "A succession of loud and shrill screams, bursting suddenly from the throat of a chained form, seemed to thrust me violently back. For a brief moment I hesitated-I trembled." He may also have this sense of regret when he tells the story half a century later and states, "May he rest in peace." Perhaps he tells this story with regret.

"Written by a middle-aged man who had already lost two children, both parents, and his closest friend… ['Nothing Gold Can Stay' by Robert Frost] …evokes a point in life when the golden illusions of youth have vanished" Frost tries to pronounce to his reader's that innocence, and youth are precious reminiscences which are inevitably taken away from every individual. Through-out the poem, hints of lack of control are suggested to the reader, and are supported by the diction and imagery Frost uses.

Frost's poem explicitly shows that there is an inevitability of growth, loss of innocence and eventual death. The poem begins by the birth or a beginning of new life. "Nature's first green is gold," implies that the birth or conception of new life, is the most valuable part of life. It is the creation of innocence and blissful ignorance. However, this innocence is lost over time and Frost makes these claims through the line "But only so an hour" which implies that innocence is a very brief time in a youthful individual. Finally, Frost concludes his poem with the destruction of innocence when pronouncing "Nothing gold can stay." Frost takes the notion of life and takes it through the stages of new life, or innocence and eventually replaces it with maturity.

Through-out the poem, Frost uses key words and styles of text, which give power to his writing. Through-out the poem, Frost keeps his language in a monosyllabic style of text. Each word is one or two syllables, and never more; this simplicity gives the reader the notion that life is simple but while you read further the simple becomes more and more complex to keep and thus innocence is running parallel to the simplicity becomes more and more difficult to maintain. Frost uses the word "gold" as a high status or importance within the poem. The word gives priority to innocence as it is the most important, but most fragile element to maintain. Frost also uses "Eden" in his work to create a link to biblical times in which Adam and Eve lose their innocence when they are consume the Apple of Knowledge. Frost's use of words and style of words make the poem very effective, in both the diction and the imagery.

Frost's poem can be broken down into major parts both of which imagery is used and helps to transfer his thoughts to the reader. "Nature's First green is gold Her hardest hue to hold" tells the reader that new life is very precious, and that it is difficult for the new life to maintain its innocence. "Her early leafs a flower But only so an hour Then leaf subsides to leaf" illustrates the fact that it is inevitable that innocence will be replaced by maturity, and growth. "So Eden sank to grief So dawn goes down to day" symbolizes the new maturity that is given through knowledge and grown and each day, as it goes by is a step away from innocence. The poem ends with "Nothing gold can stay" representing the absolute end of purity and innocence.

Innocence is lost no matter what an individual does, and Robert Frost shows this very clearly in "Nothing Gold Can Stay." Innocence is shown in this poem as a force which there can be no control over, it shows a weakness in human nature to eventually lose something so precious, but is replaced with intellect and experience. Frost illustrates all these points plainly and bluntly to his readers. He shows this lack of control through his diction and imagery.

There are three societies that have had a large impact on the environment, the hunter-gatherers, agricultural and industrial societies. Each of these three societies have effected the environment in its species diversity, stability, cycling of minerals, energy flow, population control and effects on the water cycle. Then environment has changed a great deal from the beginning of the time of the first intelligent humans, about 15 thousand years ago.

Hunter-gatherers effected the species diversity by changing the distribution of plants as they moved from location to location. They carried seeds of plants in one area, with them to the next area they settled and spread plant diversification. They also had the possibility of hunting animal species to extinction. But this is not a proven fact and may have been caused by changes in climate from the Ice Age. The agricultural society clear-cut a lot of land in order to make room for their crops to be planted and thus effected the tree population by severely decreasing it. Clear-cutting of the tropical rainforest for wood and farm land and of land used for the increase in necessity of space for the increase of inhabitants for the industrialists significantly decreased the amount of plants and organisms. In the tropical rainforest, where there is the most diverse amount of species, the amount of organisms that are now extinct as a result add up to millions.

The stability of the hunter-gatherer population was very stabile. They purposefully kept the population from growing by practices such as abstinence, abortion, infanticide, late marriage and late weaning. Those who were born had a long life-expectancy because of their healthy diet and exercise. During the agricultural revolution, the population became unstable and the population sky-rocketed. The need for children was strong for the help around the farm. Natural disasters and weather caused the agricultural dependant society to have large losses in population because there was no backup plan for food. The stability of the industrialists are more stabile that of the agriculturists, but still are not stable because people are unhealthy when it comes to food and the amount of children can still sometimes be very high although there is no need for the large numbers in relation to survival.

The minerals in the areas that the hunter-gatherers inhabited were not greatly effected because although they used resources around them, they were replaceable and were not used to the extent of extinction. The agriculturists started effecting the mineral cycle because of the soil erosion by settling large areas of land. The industrialist effected the minerals by using them for food, health, and various other reasons.

Buy The Human Impact on the Invironment term paper

The energy that hunter-gatherers used came from natural resources such as replaceable wood and sunlight. These things did not have a large impact on the environment because both are not limited resources. Most of the energy that the agricultural society used, also came from wood and sunlight, with the addition of running water for electricity. People in the industrial society started using fossil fuels as a source of energy. Fossil fuels are not replaceable and there is a limited supply of them, greatly decreasing the source that industrialists depend on for energy.

The population of the hunter-gatherers was controlled by the rustic living conditions which led to the survival of the physically fit and things such as disease that had no cure and the fact that there wasn't much need for children, other than to prevent extinction. There was no population control within the agricultural society because the use of children was very important in the success of farmers and they were also need for inheriting property. Population is controlled by birth control in the industrial age, except for in some areas of the world where they are not educated about it or for those who chose not to use it. Birth control is way for people to control when they are to have children and how many. There is still a constant increase of population occurring every day.

The effect that the hunter-gatherers had on the water cycle came from the waste products of the people. The waste went straight into local water systems and quickly polluted them and disease struck the organisms that inhabited and drank the water. The agricultural society polluted their water with the half of the fertilizer they used being run-off. Also, in the United States, 80 percent of the freshwater was used for irrigation purposes for crops, which caused large water shortages. Since the soil was eroded from the crops, there was also an increase of floods. Industrialists burn coal and other fossil fuels and create pollution that gets into the water systems by acid rain. There is also run-off from existing farms and the introduction of man made pollutants that are not biodegradable, such as plastics, that will stay with us on the earth forever.

All three societies effected some of the six characteristics that humans have changed to the natural environment. The stability and control of population has effected the amount of natural resources and state of the environment. Without stability and control of the human population, the state of the environment has a tendency to be on a downfall without education and organized ways to stop the destruction.

"The white man's reality are his streets with their banks, shops, neon lights and traffic, streets full of policemen, whores, and sad-faced people in a hurry to punch a time clock. But this is unreal. The real reality is underneath all this. Grandfather Peyote helps you find it." - Crow Dog Peyote, a hallucinogenic plant that is commonly used as a recreational drug, has a much greater meaning for members of the peyote religion. By examining the effects of peyote along with its role in the rituals and beliefs of the Native American Church it becomes apparent why it is such an integral part of the religion. The trade and knowledge of this sacred plant was already well defined in regions of Mexico well before European conquest and its ceremonial use was already underway in the tribes of the area in which it grew. This religious use eventually spread through North American regions. Along with its migration, the basic rituals and ceremonies changed along the way. The organization of religion involving peyote and the principle rituals had become commonly practiced among the Comanche and Kiowa tribes by the mid-eighteen hundreds. The Native American Church formed in 11, beginning in Oklahoma. Soon after this initial formation, state and local incorporation followed in many places and continue to do so to this day. (Aberle, 1) Now, some form of peyote religion is common to most tribes of the North American continent. Peyote (Lophophora williamsii) is a very small, low growing, fuzzy type of cactus. Most of the cactus is actually underground in a long root. Both the flesh and roots can be eaten. When dried the flesh resembles brown overcoat buttons, which is where the term peyote "buttons" came from. Peyote isn't found just anywhere. It grows in the wild over only a small portion of the Southwestern United States known as the Peyote Garden. Precisely, Corpus Christi, Texas, Deming, New Mexico, Durango, Mexico and Puebla , Mexico bind the area in which this plant can be found and harvested. (Aberle, 5) Containing eight different alkaloids, the most important being mescaline, peyote causes a number of effects. The experience begins with an euphoric quality. It heightens the sensations to sound, color, form and texture. Further into the experience, "visions" begin to occur. These visions can include detailed, realistic pictures and sounds. The interpretation of these visions rather than the visions themselves are what peyotists consider most important. The peyote experience is characterized by a strong feeling of personal significance of the internal and external stimuli encountered during the experience. Many find themselves asking, "What does this mean to me?" The Native American Church came to the Indians during their darkest hour. It was around the time when the last of the buffalo had disappeared from the plains. They were left starving, helpless and with little of their old lives remaining to cling to. In the words of a member of the NAC, Mary Crow Dog, "The Native American Church became the religion of the poorest of the poor, the conquered, the despoiled. Peyote made them understand what was happening and made them endure. It was the only thing that gave them strength in those, our darkest days." It was obvious that a militant religion could not have survived under white dominance. The formation of this religion was a response to the degraded status on Native Americans. It's goal- internal peace and harmony rather than competition. This idea was highly relevant to the socio-economic situation that these indigenous people were being faced with. For many, this was exactly what they needed to continue on. Since the beginning, there has been strong opposition to the Native American Church by several groups. The traditionalist Indians opposed it believing that it was a threat to traditional tribal culture. Modernist Indians as well as whites opposed the religion also saying that it was heathenistic and backward. In the early stages, peyote meetings were illegal not for the use of peyote, but because Native American rituals in general were outlawed. But, in 14, under John Collier, the Bureau of Indian Affairs enacted a policy of non-interference with peyotism. There have been state laws prohibiting the "sale, use or possession of peyote", but all such laws have been repealed since the sixties (Aberle, 18).At the present, it is legal for those acting on behalf of the Native American Church to buy or harvest peyote for their religious needs. Most peyotism that is practiced today is identified with the Native American Church (NAC). It is a loosely organized group with numerous divisions. Within each division are many local chapters, more commonly called moons. Attendance to meetings is dependent on local and kinship ties. The local road chief can deal with all functions of the religion, so no formal organization is necessary. In his book, David Aberle noted that "peyotism has not been marked by numerous schisms; if 'we all worship the same God and all eat peyote,' this is sufficient." The use of peyote for members of NAC is not simply for the pleasure of doing so. It is taken as a religious adjunct, aiding in heightening the level of this special experience. It supplies a feeling of personal significance, which is central to reflecting on one's self, relationships, ethics and in bringing new meaning to these things. There is also believed to be medicinal benefits to peyote. Many Indians claim that it has powers to heal the mind and body. Peyote gives the ability to "get into the power" to the peyotist. Mary Crow Dog wrote about "feeling the strength surging through your body". The fact that no two peyote experiences are the same and the fact that you can never predict how a particular experience will turn out make this power all the more real. This concept of power is common to all Native Americans. It has to do with feeling close to God, or the Great Spirit. This sacred plant also serves as a unifier for the Native Americans. For generations the differences among tribes have kept them from uniting to achieve progress in gaining rights. In the peyote meetings, tribal differences are forgotten. "No longer are we Navajos, Poncas, Apaches or Sioux, but just Indians." (Crow Dog, 101) The fact that peyote unified native people attracted more and more members during the Indian Civil Rights Movement during the sixties because unity was a major goal of the movement that the NAC helped to promote. Although loosely organized, all members of the NAC had a basic system of beliefs and an ethical code that they hold as a guide on how to live their lives. First of all, peyote is believed to be the immaterial personification of power, often referred to as the "Peyote Spirit". The Great Spirit is the ultimate source of this power. By taking peyote it is thought that one can communicate with the Great Spirit through visions. The ethical code, commonly referred to as the Peyote Road, consists of four main parts brotherly love, care of family, self-reliance and avoidance of alcohol. It is believed that if a person follows the Peyote Road faithfully it will lead them to "tranquility in this life as well as bliss in the next world". On the other hand, those who lapse morally in these regards will pay during the peyote meeting, both physically and spiritually (Aberle, 1). The rituals of the Native American Church vary greatly in specifics from tribe to tribe. The Navajo prefer shaping their altar like a half moon, while other tribe may shape their altars differently. Some tribes conduct the peyote meetings in a tipi used especially for that purpose, while other tribes opt to use a regular room in a house. However, there is a set of basic rituals that are common to all tribes in the United States. Peyote meetings are always held for a purpose, commonly to cure, thank the Great Spirit for past blessings, to deter evil and promote good. It is hoped that the prayers of the participants will accomplish the given purpose. The participants gather at sundown for the ceremony that will last until dawn. There are generally four officiates required for the ceremony to take place. There is the road chief, who leads the meeting, a drummer chief, who does most of the drumming, a fire chief, who is in charge of tending to the fire and a cedar chief, who creates the cedar smoke throughout the night. The use of prayer, song, drumming and the joint eating of the peyote at various times throughout the night as well as the drinking of cold water at midnight and early morning are all key elements to the ritual. These practices are all believe to be forms of communication with the Great Spirit. During prayer, there is a staff passed around the meeting to all male participants. The staff is considered male, so females are not allowed to pray with the staff. It is believed that when you pray with the staff, your thoughts travel up it and messages from the Great Spirit travel back down. The drums also aid in the communication. It is said that when a man drums, you can "read his mind". Everyone also takes part in the peyote songs. Typically, the songs do not contain words, but whether or not to add words is up to the singer. The Church members believe that with peyote to guide you, the meanings of these songs can be deciphered. The drum itself is symbolic of the Indians' heartbeats. The Fire Chief starts a fire in the center of the gathering. It is said to represent the eternal life that passes from one generation to the next. The smoke from the cedar incense is then sprinkled over the fire at various times during the night. It is believed to represent all green, living things and to purify everything that the smoke touches. The feather fan and the gourd are also integral parts of the ceremony. The gourd is representative of the Spirit Voice. While the songs are going on, the feather fan is waved in the air to catch the songs. These fans can be made of different types of feathers, all of which symbolize something different. For example, the Water Bird Feather Fan is a chief symbol of the peyote religion and is used to bless the water before drinking it, while the Hawk Feather Fan is a symbol of understanding. All of the materials used during the ceremony are considered to be sacred and symbolic of something the Indians consider important. These materials help in the communication with the Great Spirit, which is the ultimate goal of the meeting. Peyotism is, indeed, a unique religion. The members of the Native American Church take this "powerful medicine" in order to communicate directly with the Great Spirit. They follow a strict ethical code and believe that peyote will help them understand their lives more fully. I greatly admire the idea of reflecting on one's own situation in order to live a tranquil, honest life. The religion was formed as a way of unifying Native Americans and helping them accept and deal with the situation they are faced with. Peyotism has proven largely successful in achieving these goals, making it a wonderful thing for the indigenous people of this country

Here were are "again" at the brink of war. Once again Soldiers are

called to protect and defend this country. I stand yet again with tears in my

eyes as the safe world I once knew continues to crumble. War and Violence

have always been in this country but, this has only been the nd I have been

Custom Essays on War Again

able to comprehend. There have been tons of wars but only that I have been

alive to take in. It's scary and certainly not an easy subject to talk about

because it effects everyone in the world and it hits you so hard that your

pushed back and filled with uncontrollable feelings that sometimes push you

to the edge. Doubt, fear, panic, suffering, chaos, destruction, anxiety, and

pain. They all fill your head and take you far away.

I don't like war, nobody does. If anything we'd avoid it if we could and

now men and women of good standing are out there once again defending our

country and our freedom. Soldiers are out their risking their lives for me and

to that all I can do is thank them but, I wish I could do more. It just not

enough. People who don't know us are out their on the battle fields,

practically staring death in the face. Risking everything they have to keep this

country alive. They dropped whatever they were doing, knowing that they

may never see their family again all to stand of up for what is right. Their not

the first, many have went before them to defend our country and that's

phenomenal. Hold on to your friends and family. Keep them close to you

always for it may be the last time spent with them. Never forget to spend

equal amounts of time with them and always let them know you love them.

You can never say that enough.

Saddam Hussein is a man who wants power he can never have so he

took away truth from the Iraqi people and he didn't want to stop there. He

wanted to rule the world. We are free people because we live according to

what we know is right or wrong. If Truth is taken from us, then right or

wrong is taken from us as well. If we don't know right and wrong, then we

can't, we won't control ourselves, but will look to someone else to bring order

through brute force and raw power. We will be controlled by a tyrant, and we

will no longer be free and don't count on that tyrant to be kind or merciful.

He has no sense of right and wrong, either, and will do to us whatever he

wants. What Saddam did to the Iraqi people brought into discovery what

happens to people when there is no truth, to observe and record what people

can do when pushed to the extreme with no ultimate moral foundation. It was

an attempt by a man who is hungry for power to find the most effective way

to rob people of their freedom. The conclusion Take away truth and a tyrant

will rule. "Small wonder, then, that Jesus said, "You shall know the truth,

and the truth shall make you free,' and where else can truth, Real Truth,

come from, than from God, Who is truth by his very nature".

War isn't the answer to everything. We seemed to think to it is. People are

always going to violence and fighting to solve problems but, all it does is

create more of it. I've been looking at people and how they change like the

tide. Here lately, all I have been seeing are people throwing love away and

losing their minds. Or maybe it's me that has gone crazy because I just can't

understand why all these people keep hurting each other. Good love is so

hard to come by. Where is the love in all this? It's like it's completely

vanished. let's pray and send our love and our support to the troops that are

out there protecting us and defending our freedom, send our prayers to them

and their families, and send our gratitude to the ones who went before them

and the one who will go in the future. There will always be threats to peace

and freedom. It's up to us to keep the Love Alive.

By Tommy Lones

The Early Morning Trio

Have you ever had a long night of studying and writing papers and finally get to sleep at around 00 am, and bright and early at 70 am an orchestra of bush-cutters, lawnmowers and leaf blowers comes flying into your ear via window? If so, I feel your pain, it should be illegal . You can hear it coming from a distance and you know in the back of your head its just going to get worse and worse, a lawnmower comes creeping to your window, much louder in the morning because your ears are just as new to sound as if you were a new born child, and stays for a good five to 10 minutes. After the lawnmower leaves you have about 10 minutes before its distant relative, the bush cutter, makes its way slowly into you virgin eardrums playing the part of a percussionist. It's now somewhere around 804 when you finally fall back to sleep, when all of a sudden you hear a faint sound of a tiny hurricane approaching closer and closer, then out of nowhere tiny debris starts flying trough your window, it's the leaf blower. The leaf blower may as well be the icing on the cake because that's the most annoying sound on earth when it hits you that early in the morning, you get up make your self a cup of coffee with your eyes not even half open, when all of the sound stops. Finally, silence, but by now you are all woken up and not able to get back to sleep even if you tried, all thanks to the morning orchestra you get four hours of sleep and enough bags under your eyes to commute you to Paris.

In the previous paragraph it explains a certain thing that I particularly hate, but I now not only hate the sound of the parade in the morning, I also dislike the workers, the annoying conductors of the quartet, that wake up the whole neighborhood at the crack of dawn. Lastly, I would like to thank the inventors of such machines that make so much noise just to move a few leaves off the sidewalk, while providing an early morning alarm clock for half the block.

The idea of censorship in our country is the idea that certain people are restricted from doing certain things because of safety or moral value. Is censorship a good idea? Or is it taking away our freedom to do what we want to do. Censorship is a good thing that our sociaty has. But there are some people out there in our sociaty that think censorship takes away our freedoms to do what we want to do.

The first example of the way we use censorship in our sociaty are the movie ratings. The movies today are rated G, PG, PG-1, and R. A rated G movie would not have scenes where someone is blowing someone's head off with a shotgun and blood and guts spilling everywhere. The reason for this is that some younger children may get scared if they see violence like that. It would not be the best thing for a young child to be thinking about stuff like that. If children are prone to seeing violence like that at a young age, they may cause themselves or someone else serious damage in the future (Goldberg 5). Children under a certain age probably should not watch TV shows or movies that have graphic violence in them until they understand about violence and how dangerous certain things are in the world today. Some children out there may think every thing they watch is true and fun to do. If a child watches a lot of violence, one day they might think it would be cool to go out and shoot someone for the fun of it. There are some children out there who are censored all the time on what they watch or do. Some of these children may not know how the real word works. They may think that nothing could ever happen to them and they will be safe all the time. Children should be censored on some things, but they also need to be told on how the real world is and not shelter them from that. For example, September 11 we experienced the most violent, tragic acts in American history. Children should not be sheltered by not knowing what goes on in the world (Cagle 0).

There are some people out there who think that no matter how old people are that they have the right to watch whatever they want to. It doesn't matter if they are thirty or ten, some people believe that anyone has a right to make a choice on what they want to watch. Some people don't mind their children watching R rated movies because they think that it won't them. Some people think that if their child is mature enough that they can watch what they want to. Do parents have a right to tell their children what to watch and what not to watch (Hauptman 4)? Until that child grows up and goes out on his/her own parents have the right to raise them however they want to.

Another form of censorship is what the government censors on us as a nation. For example, the parental advisory on tapes and CD's that are sold. The government decided in court that any album with lyrics that are bad such as violence, sex, and drug use will have a parental advisory placed on the cover of the album to warn kids that what they are buying is basically trash. Was this the right thing to do? Does the government have the right to tell us what is good to listen to and what isn't good to listen to? A lot of artists that made these albums were outraged because they said that it was taking away their freedom of speech and it would hurt their bank accounts because less people would buy their albums. Is censorship losing your freedom of speech(Foster 80)? This could not be losing your freedom of speech because the song artists still get to write whatever songs they want to write. The parental advisory is on the albums for a reason. It is there to warn children, not prohibit them from the music they want to listen to.

Censorship is also used in our school systems today. Children are being censored on what they are being taught, what they read. What they watch, and, in now in days, what they do on the computer in the classroom. Teachers are also being censored on what they teach or what they show their students. A teacher that would show a third grade class Saving private Ryan would probably be in big trouble. I don't think that teachers would also encourage their students to read playboy magazines either. That is a form of censorship. There was a problem at one elementary school where a student borrowed a book from the school library. The book was a scary stories book. The child had a problem with nightmares and when he read it the book scared him and upset the child. The mather of the child was mad at the school because they did not warn him. Should this tell us to take scary books out of our school system (Manly 16)? Books like that should not be taken out of the classroom, but teachers should censor students on what they are reading. Some teachers like to show their students videos for educational purposes. Teachers are censored on what kind of videos they can show. Computers are getting to be very popular in the classroom. Some first graders know more about computers than adults do. Teachers censor their students by making sure the students stay off bad sites or sites that are not educational. More and more teachers are going to computers for their classroom.

Censorship in our country mainly points to children. The reason we have a rating system, parental advisories, and censoring children in the classroom is to make them better and smarter in the long run. A lot of people may not like the idea of censorship at all. Others think that it is a necessity for moral values to be preserved in the great country we live in today.
