I. The Asian Economy Bottoms Out

In the first quarter of 1, the East Asian economic region witnessed positive gross domestic product (GDP) rates in South Korea, Singapore, and the Philippines, while Hong Kong and Malaysia reduced their negative GDP rates, beating previous economic forecasts.

Looking at the basic economic indicators in the first quarter of 1, most observers believe that the East Asian economy has bottomed out and is beginning to recover from its darkest hour. At the same time, there has been a gradual increase in the gap between individual economic recovery rates.

South Korea, Singapore, and Taiwan have concentrated on increasing their exports of computer-related hardware, in which they enjoy a competitive advantage. It is also clear that their personal consumption is expanding. Judging from these two conditions, these three countries have positioned themselves for a strong economic recovery. South Korea and Singapore will post strong growth rates, and Taiwan is also expected to continue to register strong rates in the foreseeable future.

Cheap College Papers on Sustainable Economy

Thailand, Malaysia, and the Philippines have also stabilized their economic recovery through export expansion; however, they do not have a competitive advantage. If the U.S. economy were to slow down in the second half of this year, there is a possibility for slower economic growth in these countries due to the lack of competitive edge. Thailand, whose productivity started to rebound toward the end of 18, will post a positive economic growth rate while Malaysia and the Philippines will register zero growth.

On the other hand, China, Hong Kong, and Indonesia have shown no signs of undergoing structural economic reform. These countries are expected to continue to hover at the bottom of the economic recovery cycle. Both Hong Kong and Indonesia are expected to continue showing negative economic growth rates, though the magnitude might be reduced. China is also expected to hover at growth rates of approximately 7.5%, compared to .7% in 16, for example.

II. Road to Economic Recovery South Korea, Taiwan, and Singapore

Through the increase of exports and productivity, there is a widespread sense that the bottom out phase is passing. The reasons these three countries (i.e., South Korea, Taiwan, and Singapore) have shown basic strength in their recovery follow.

A. High-tech Industry Drives Export-related Growth and Productivity

First, South Korea, Taiwan, and Singapore have concentrated on raising exports and productivity rates through their electronics, computer, semiconductor, and other high-tech industries.

These countries, before entering the financial crisis, were already modernizing their industrial structure, especially their computer-related fields-semiconductors and personal computers, where they maintained their superior international position. For example, Korea has captured a 40% share of the global DRAM market through the efforts of its three home-court makers Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd., Hyundai Electronics Ind. Co., Ltd., and LG Semicon Co., Ltd.

Taiwan has become the global site for original equipment manufacturer (OEM) production for personal computer makers from the U.S., Japan and Europe. The country also boasts a leading PC maker, ACER, as well as motherboard makers, which have helped make Taiwan the worlds leading computer hardware supplier.

Singapore, on the other hand, does not have a domestic manufacturer with a global competitive edge as South Korea and Taiwan do. However, starting from the 180s, Singapore has planned and promoted its computer network infrastructure through an emphasis on information-related equipment and semiconductor upstream processing. Singapore has also actively sought out and invited researchers from the U.S. and Japan. As a result of those invitations, foreign companies have established businesses in Singapore more readily, making Singapore a center for added-value export products.

As a result, since 18, these three countries export and production have been driven by rising global demand for personal computers and semiconductors, together with their already well-established infrastructure.

In Shakespeare's, Hamlet, many people look at the play in different ways. Many portions of the play support his loss of control on actions, while other parts uphold his ability of dramatic art. The issue whether or not Hamlet is mad can be discussed in both ways. Throughout the play there are indications that support 'Hamlets madness' 1. While other evidence would suggest that his 'madness is a disguise to murder Claudius' .

In Act 1 Scene 4, Hamlet meets the ghost for the first time 'alas poor ghost' , it is thought by Hamlet that the ghost is his 'father's spirit' 4. The apparition informs the prince that he was killed 'by a brothers hand' 5, thus meaning Claudius. Clearly at this moment Hamlet is not feeling cheerful, as he has been given the news that his uncle murdered his father, but yet, he greets his friends buoyantly and acts as if it was good news rather than bad news, 'What news my lord?' 6 'O, wonderful' 7. This is the first glimpse of Hamlet's ability to manipulate his behaviour to achieve effects.

It is established in Act 1 Scene , that Hamlet has feeling for Ophelia, but Hamlet changes his reaction to her, as Claudius and Polonius hiding behind a curtain. His complete rejection of her love, 'I love you not' 8 is not his true feelings, but Hamlet suspects of them so attitude towards Ophelia is that of rejection. This shows that Hamlet can control his true feeling to his own benefit. In the same way Hamlet can trick the other characters in to believing he is mad and this can then be an 'excuse for killing the Claudius' .

He is instructed by the ghost to 'Revenge his foul and most unnatural murder' 10 by killing his 'uncle' 11. But yet this supposed 'madman' 1 insists on proving that Claudius is guilty before murdering him. Would an insane human not attack the king directly, this would show that Hamlet is sane and that Gertrude's statement is untrue.

Cheap custom writing service can write essays on Alas he's mad' (3,4,106)How true is Gertrude's statement regarding her son's state of mind through out the

'The rugged Pyrrhus, like th' Hyrcanian beast' 1. Hamlet recites the words of the play that he has composed. Still unsure whether his uncle was responsible for the death of his father, 'Hamlet decides to test his uncle's guilt' 14. The play was devised to show the 'emotions that Claudius has when one brother kills another' 15. While the actors are performing the play in front of Hamlet, he shows the actor how to do their A TITLE=Click for more information about job STYLE=background-color #f0f000; HREF=http//search.targetwords.com/u.search?x=577|1||||job|AA1VDwjob/A, he tells them how to act. The acting ability that the prince poses would entice the reader to believe he is acting to avenge his father's death.

Hamlet himself denies being mad on numerous occasions.

King How is it that the clouds still hang on you?

Hamlet Not so, my lord, I am too much in the

sun. 16

When asked by the king whether he is depressed, he swiftly denies it and replies by saying that he is too much in the sun. ' It is not madness That I have uttered' 17 again Hamlet abjures the idea of him being mad. In secrecy Hamlets admits to his mother that he is not mad, this would seem to show that 'Hamlet is only acting mad 18'

'Alas he's mad' 1 Gertrude's famous statement regarding her sons state of mind, would show that the 'characters within the play consider Hamlet to be crazy' 0. With the characters believing that he is mad, Hamlet now can murders his uncle and blame it on his madness.

The mother calls her child 'mad' 1 when she sees him talking to the air, but Hamlet believes that he is talking to his father's ghost. People would believe that the ghost is a fragment of his imagination. But if he had seen the ghost in private the argument about his madness would have greatly improved. But he was not the first character to see the ghost, in the first scene we learn about the guards and Horatio seeing a ghost. Thus believing it to be of the former king, the three men notify Hamlet; therefore meaning the ghost was not a fragment of Hamlet's imagination.

'And draws you in to madness' before going off to see the ghost, Hamlet is warned by Horatio that the ghost may cause him to go mad, this may be where Hamlet got the idea to act insane.

Hamlet swears Horatio and Marcellus to secrecy about the Ghost, 'Never make known what you have seen tonight' he adds that they can not so much as hint that they know anything, 'however strangely he behaves in future. '4

'I perchance hereafter shall think meet/

To put an Antic disposition on' 5

The statement shows Hamlet telling Horatio and Marcellus about his plan to put on 'anti disposition' 6.

While talking to the Ghost, Hamlet was instructed to kill Claudius, Hamlet unsure whether Claudius did kill his father waited till he got further proof. He sets up a play to get the proof he acquires.

After the death of her father it was quite obverse that 'Ophelia's madness was true' 7, comparing it to Hamlet puts his questionable madness in a more favourable light. Since that it is agreeable that Ophelia was mad, we can use it as a guide to judge wheather Hamlet is mad. All Ophelia can do after learning about her father's death is sing. Hamlet's madness is only apparent in the presence of certain characters. When Hamlet is in the presence of Horatio, the player and gravediggers his actions are of a sane person. While in the presence of Claudius, Gertrude, Polonius, Rosencrantz and Guildenstern his actions are of someone insane. Ophelia's madness is in the presence of all the characters. This would show that 'Hamlets madness is only acted. 8'

Ophelia's breakdown in to madness and her inability to cope with the death of her father and Hamlet rejection is dealt with her death. There is little evidence against her madness compared to Hamlet's intelligent plotting.

Hamlet is able to make smart comment to Polonius, Rosencrantz and Guildenstern. Throughout the play he insults these characters with his smart comments. The comments show that Hamlet has had some kind of planning for these comments.

However there is evidence that does suggest that Hamlet is mad, he kills Polonius rashly, a sane person would not just kill anyone for standing behind the curtain.

'A man (beggar) may fish with the worm

that hath eat of a king, and eat of the

fish that hath fed of that worm.

When the king questions Hamlet about the whereabouts of Polonius body, he replies with the statement above. The quote means that the worms are eating him for supper, and this is what a deranged human would say.

'To be, or not to be' 0 some interpretations of this soliloquy show 'Hamlet pondering suicide' 1. As Hamlet is talking to himself, without the presence of any other character, these are his true feeling. This is further evidence that shows he is mad. Ophelia's madness is never in doubt she ponders suicide, so if she is mad Hamlet is also mad.

The sequence of tragic moment that occurs in this play would leave Hamlet mad. Hamlet's father has died and then his mother marries not only his uncle but also the person who killed his father. And then his father appears in a form of ghost and instructs Hamlet to kill his uncle.

Hamlet throughout the play Hamlet seems to do thing that convinces everyone bar Horatio that he is mad. 'Alas he's mad' , Gertrude makes this statement believing that Hamlet is mad, Polonius 'believes Hamlet's madness to be due to Ophelia rejecting his love.' With so many characters considering Hamlet to be mad, it would indicate that he is mad.

Hamlet can be compared to King Lear 4 because in both plays there is one character that is truly mad and one only acting mad to serve a motive. Ophelia in Hamlet and King Lear in King Lear these character are unquestionable mad, they provide a balancing argument to the questionable madness of Hamlet and Edgar.

Just as Ophelia's madness is believe able due to the death of her father and her rejection from Hamlet, King Lear's madness accounts for his frailty of is mind.

Hamlet was based on a 'Denmark prince called Anleth' 5. His uncle, Feng, killed his father, Howendil. Then Anleth's mother married his uncle. The true story of Hamlet would suggest that Hamlet was acting mad to avenge the death of his father, 'as Anleth acted like an idiot to confuse folks' 6.

'Shakespeare was constrained by his plot to have Hamlet pretend to de delusional. 7 This a secondary source would suggest that Hamlet is sane. As the writer claims that Shakespeare was forced to have Hamlet pretend to be delusional. And that his plot and the main concept of the play 'was to have Hamlet acting mad to avenged the death of his father' 8.

Throughout the play there are signs that show that Hamlet is mad, but when compared to Ophelia, his supposed madness is put in doubt. It would seem as though Hamlets madness was a disguise to kill his uncle. Hamlet's madness is only apparent in the company of certain characters this would put his supposed madness in a more unfavourable light. Hamlet's ability to act and to manipulate his behaviour would seem to show that Hamlet sane. All these factors would result in the reader believing that Hamlet is sane and that Gertrude's statement is untrue.

"A Rose for Emily", by William Faulkner, begins and ends with the death of Miss Emily Grierson, the main character of the story. In the story William Faulkner uses characterization to reveal the character of Miss Emily. Faulkner divided the story "into five sections, the first and last section having to do with the present, and the now of the narration, with the three middle sections detailing the past" (Davis 5). Faulkner expresses the content of Miss Emily's character through physical description, through her actions, words, and feelings, through the narrator's direct comments about her, and through the actions, words, and feelings of other characters. Faulkner best uses characterization to examine the theme of the story, we are the products of our environment. Miss Emily lives for many years as a recluse, as a result of her surroundings. In the story the narrator comments that "no one save an old man-servanta combined gardener and cookhad seen [the house] in at least ten years" (Faulkner 17). Miss Emily's father is partly to blame for her life as a recluse. Faulkner's narrator says that, "We remembered all the young men her father had driven away" (1). Critic Donald Akers notes that In the story, Emily's overprotective, overbearing father denies her a normal relationship with the opposite sex by chasing away any potential mates. Because her father is the only man with whom she has had a close relationship, she denies his death and keeps his corpse in her house until she breaks down three days later when the doctors insist she let them take the body. () Her father robs her from many of life's necessities. She misses out on having friends, being a normal woman, and her ability to be happy. Emily is so used to having her father be there for her, she figures that by keeping his body he can still be part of her life. Miss Emily may have lived in seclusion, but her heart longed for companionship. The summer after her father's death, the town brought in a construction company to begin paving the sidewalks. The foreman of the company was Homer Barron. The town then begins to see him and Miss Emily on Sunday afternoons together. Michael L. Burduck, of The University of Mississippi Studies in English, notes in his article that "Faulkner himself sheds interesting light on this matter when he describes Miss Emily as a woman 'that just wanted to be loved and to love and to have a husband and a family'" (10). It is later gossiped that Miss Emily had bought arsenic, and the town all said, "She will kill herself"(Faulkner ). Later it was gossiped that she had bought a man's toilet set and men's clothing and the town was glad because they thought that the two either were or were getting married. Emily now feels that "without a husband, her life will have no meaning" ("A Rose for Emily 1). It is noted by Daniel Akers that "Homer himself may not exactly be enthusiastic about marrying Emily. However, it is left to the reader to imagine the exact circumstances leading to Homer's denouement. Finally, Emily takes the offensive by poisoning Homer so he can't abandon her" (). Miss Emily's desire for love and companionship drives her to murder Homer Baron with arsenic poison that was bought to be used for rats. Critic Michael L. Burduck says Our narrator knows that Emily purchased poison, ostensibly to kill "rats". One slang use of the term "rat" applies to a man who has cheated on his lover. Perhaps Faulkner's tale-teller suspects that Emily feared that Homer would not remain faithful to her. In order to "keep" Homer by her side, Emily poisoned him. (10) She knew her true intentions when she bought the arsenic poison, but Emily did what "she could to retain Homer's companionship and insure that he would not give her up for another woman" (Burduck 10). After Homer's disappearance the front door was not used again, except for a period of six to seven years when she gave china-painting lessons. After Homer's disappearance Emily is seen now and then in the windows of her house. After the death of her father and the disappearance of her sweetheart, Emily's house began to develop a smell for which a few of the townsmen sprinkled lime around her house on night and the smell went away. Faulkner's narrator then notes about her hair that "[u]p to the day of her death at seventy-four it was still that vigorous iron-gray like the hair of an active man" (4). Critic John F. Birk says, "Notably, the new-found quality of Emily's hair hints that, first, she is playing a more aggressive if unseen role behind the scenes, and, second, she is somehow adopting a male role" (10). Faulkner later describes Miss Emily by saying "Thus she passed from generation to generationdear, inescapable, impervious, tranquil, and perverse" (5). Davis does not believe that this is simply a list of adjectives Faulkner chose to catalog but that he uses to Describe Miss Emily with some care and for a specific purpose. It could be argued that they are intended to refer to the successive sections of the story, each becoming as it were a sort of metaphorical characterization of the differing states through which the townspeople of Jefferson (and the readers) pass in their evaluation of Miss Emily. (5) Another critic, Robert Crosman, comments that in his reading of the story he found Miss Emily to be "menacing" and even "grotesque and stupid" while one of his students describe Miss Emily as having "endurance, faith, [and] love" (08-0). After the adjective description Faulkner's next line states, "And so she died" (Faulkner 5). Miss Emily fell ill and died with only her Negro to wait on her. The town then waited for Miss Emily to be decently in the ground to open the one upstairs room that they knew had been closed for forty years. The scene next seen was completely unexpected. Homer Barron was in the bed. The town stood staring looking at the body. "Then we noticed that in the second pillow was the indentation of a head" and then someone lifted something from it, it was a "long strand of iron-gray hair" (Faulkner 6). It was obvious that Miss Emily had not only killed her sweetheart by actually laid with him after his death. Her deepest and hidden longings were lying in the bed. She kept Homer's body so long because she feels that she has finally accomplished something in her life. William Faulkner's use of characterization to describe Miss Emily and her intention was triumphant in bringing the story to life. Miss Emily's character was expressed though her actions and feelings, through the narrator's direct comments about her, and through the actions, words, and feelings of other characters.

characteristic of Chinese that a sentence is led by a topic, which makes the sentence loosely organized grammatically with very few connection words to show its grammatical relations. On the contrary, importance is attached to grammatical structures in English. To do a good job in translation, one must parse the Chinese sentences first to find out the implied grammatical connections. Only by so doing can he (she) complete his (her) translation task satisfactorily.

"Discuss the significance of nationalism for contemporary literature"

Seamus Deane's novel "Reading in the Dark" centres around a catholic family in post-war Northern Ireland. The family are haunted by secrets and their story is told through the eyes of one of their young sons. The issue of nationalism features prominently throughout the novel and the political and religious conflict hangs over the whole community. I will discuss whether Deane writes with a deliberate nationalist agenda and assess the significance of nationalism, in this case the want of the main characters to live in an independent Ireland free of British rule, and the effect this has on the novel. I will also look at how, through the characters in the novel, Deane dissects the Irish national character and traces the development of nationalist attitudes.

Early in the first chapter of the novel the narrator recalls a conversation from his childhood which immediately aligns the family as nationalist and Catholic

"They had stories of gamblers, drinkers, hard men, con men, champion bricklayers, boxing matches, footballers, policemen, priests, haunting, exorcisms, political killings. These were great events…like the night of the big shoot out at the distillery between the IRA and the police, when uncle Eddie disappeared."#

Uncle Eddie's disappearance whilst apparently fighting for the IRA demonstrates that the family have militant republican links. This obviously effects the attitudes of the characters throughout the novel towards the traditional enemies of nationalism, namely Unionists, the Protestant church, and especially the Protestant dominated, British government backed police force.

The fact that the political killings are described by the narrator as a great event is highly significant. Killing in the name of the nationalist cause is seen as justified, the victims as legitimate targets, and the killers as heroes. The political violence is glorified. Deane emphasises the volatile political situation in Northern Ireland, and how the family live with the violence on their doorstep. The family appear to be staunch republicans and these attitudes have clearly filtered down to their young son. Deane implies that the narrator is already hardened to the violence, he has lost his innocence and is already politicised despite being so young.

The issue of nationalism is intrinsically intertwined with the issue of political violence. Deane traces the development of violent nationalist attitudes in some of the peers of the narrator. The narrator witnesses Rory Hannaway getting accidentally run over and killed by a reversing lorry and he feels sorry for a policeman, who on seeing the body, vomited. A year later he is retold the story by one of his friends whilst hiding from police

"Danny Green told me in detail how young Hannaway had been run over by a police car which had not even stopped. 'Bastards' he said, shining the blade of his axe with the wet grass."#

The narrator goes on to describe how it was only after being told this incorrect version of the story he could begin to genuinely sorry for Rory's mother and the driver, and how this "allayed the subtle sense of treachery"# he had felt at the time for feeling pity for the policeman. The narrator expresses how he has almost been brainwashed to hate the police because they represent the enemy of the nationalist cause. Deane is expressing his own personal feeling here that at the root of much of the violence is misunderstanding and the tendency of both causes to blame each other for their plight even if it is unjustified and irrational.

The mistrust of the police is evident in the reaction to the acquittal of a Catholic man, the narrator's Grandfather, for killing a policeman, Billy Mahon. Brother Regan explains to the boys the surprise of the local community when the case was thrown out, even though the man was thought innocent, because he was Catholic "Innocence was no guarantee for a Catholic then. Nor is it now."# Everything that happened in Ireland had a political or religious subtext. The two sides polarized and all issues boiled down to matters of religion or political significance. Matters of justice were secondary.

In the example of the narrator's grandfather the real issue wasn't whether he was guilty or not, it was whether the police would frame him just because he was a Catholic. Another example of this is when the boy and his father and brother are arrested and beaten by the police over the incident with the pistol. The beating is more to do with their republican connections than the crime itself. This type of incident led to the hatred of the police. When the narrator is accused of going to the police, his mother describes them as "vermin"#. Bishop Coulter describes Sergeant Burke's idea of justice as "not…entirely Catholic"#, emphasising the split between the police and the Catholic community.

Regan delivers a powerful speech to the boys about the troubles urging them not to become involved "The whole situation makes men evil. Evil men make the whole situation."# Regan tells the boys that only God can judge them. Deane uses the priest to express hope for for the future and exposes the irony of two groups of people both fighting in the name of God. Brother Regan believes the political violence is morally wrong and is corrupting the younger generations. Deane in this example is perhaps indicating that he thinks that lack of education is to blame for young men taking up arms against each other.

Deane dissects the Irish national character in the section of the book in which the narrator reads The Shan Van Vocht. The fact that the cover is green is significant, representing Ireland. The title of the book, meaning The Poor Old Woman, a traditional name for Ireland is another dig at the almost self pitying attitude of the Irish. The heroine of the book has a Mediterranean, deliberately non-Irish appearance which the narrator finds instantly alluring. She was interesting and exotic whereas the male Irish hero was boring and morbid. The narrator talks to her and promises that he wouldn't go out to the rebellion. This shows that the boy isn't that committed to the nationalist cause and that there are more important things to him such as love. This is another optimistic passage where Deane hopes that the future can produce an Ireland in which people are less fuelled by hatred. Deane is suggesting that a man's love for a woman should be greater than his love for his country.

In "Katie's Story", Deane uses the two children as a metaphor for the problems within the Irish personality. They never left the house, only spoke Irish and had virtually the same name, Francis and Frances. Their supernatural behaviour leaves their nanny haunted. Deane implies that there is something inherently peculiar within the Irish personality that if left isolated with no contact with the outside world, manifests itself in inappropriate or depraved behaviour. There is a recurring "greenish light"# representing Ireland which indicates something supernatural or haunted. Deane is criticising the insular nature of nationalism, how it makes the Irish naïve about the world outside Ireland. James Joyce also used the colour green to indicate perversion or paralysis in a character. Deane is a nationalist, but he is able to see the flaws in many of the people who support the cause.

Throughout the book there is sense of mistrust directed towards the foreign or unknown, which is directly related to the hatred of having to live under British rule. Uncle Dan tells the narrator that the British bombed Washington, a meaningless tale to poison the boy against the British. America is talked about with a sense of awe by the boy, the promise of a better life. The uncles are too stupid and introspective to see beyond Ireland. They talk about never trusting McIlhenney, part of the reason being he "looked like an Italian."#.

Deane seems to infer that because of their hard-line support for the nationalist cause and the hatred of the British, this has left some of the older generation, such as Uncle Dan, with a total inability to see the bigger picture. They have become totally non-thinking pawns in the name of the cause and they are only interested in one thing- hating the British, but not because of any great political convictions on their part, but because as Catholics and they've been taught what to think. Later on in the novel the narrator talks about his need for a "global vision".#

In "Rats" Deane uses the story of the rat infestation as a metaphor for the occupation of Ireland and criticises the short-term thinking of the nationalist fighters. The fact that the rats live in the ruins of old air raid shelters is significant. The shelters are left over from the war, the British war. The extermination of the rats is really what the Catholic community would like to do to the British. The rats scurrying in to their homes are really the British invading and ruling their community. The narrator talks about the "battle"# as if they were fighting for freedom. He finishes by reflecting that perhaps the events of the afternoon had not solved the rat problem, just in the same way that continued battles with the British will not end the occupation, and how violence breeds violence. Fighting the Unionists would not make them go away. It serves to unite them and harden their resolve

"I imagined the living rats that remained, breathing their vengeance in a dull miasmic unison deep underground."#

In the story Crazy Joe tells the narrator about Larry McLaughlin and the disappearing woman, the haunting experience happens to Larry after he has crossed the border into the south and then crossed back again

"The world on the side you leave is never the same as the one you reach. And you know what else about the watery brook?"

"Yes. It marks the border."#

Deane is implying that there is more than a physical border between Northern and Southern Ireland. People in the north have an inability to escape and they are almost paralysed by fear. Crazy Joe goes on to say how it is a shame that people aren't shot at the border anymore. Deane emphasises the negative effect that these blind nationalist attitudes have on peoples' thinking.

Despite being the very symbol of the oppressor Sergeant Burke's conversation with the narrator's mother is very significant. Deane gives the policeman, frequently the bane of the family's life, a personality and he makes perhaps the most important statement in the novel "Politics destroyed people's lives in this place."# He also talks of the "poison"# of political violence spreading into the younger generations. Burke asks the narrator's mother why peace could ever be achieved. In her answer Deane is answering for the entire Catholic community "Injustice. The police themselves. Dirty politics."#

The narrator's grandfather dies wracked with guilt after ordering the execution of Eddie and rejects the church on his deathbed. He felt betrayed by the church "When he had fought for Ireland, who had condemned them more?"# He fought for the nationalism yet achieved nothing and died entirely disenchanted with Ireland. Deane uses him to comment on the futility of violence, and overall it is the nationalist cause that causes the family to be haunted by the past through the death of Eddie.

In conclusion, nationalism has huge significance throughout Reading in the Dark. Nationalism is at the core of all of the family's problems. All of the secrets and lies relate back to the killing of Eddie, a nationalist killed by his own people. Towards the end of the novel Deane changes to a reflective mood and the both the church and the political violence are questioned. At one point the priests are jokingly compared with the police, but the narrator's mother however insists that they belong in "different worlds"#. I think that Deane is trying to make a serious point here that like nationalism, both the police and the church were oppressive forces on Catholic society.

The novel ends on a very negative note with the death of the young British soldier on the family's doorstep during the resurgence of the troubles in 171. The narrator's father feels sorry for the boy's father when he comes to visit "Poor man…even if his son was one of those."# Deane brings the political conflict back down to a personal level. Like the young soldier many of the central characters in the book are in fact victims of the nationalist cause even though they supported it. Despite being a nationalist himself Deane does not glorify the nationalist cause and the characters in the novel are not propaganda pieces. Many are quite the opposite, haunted and flawed people who end up disillusioned with fighting for Ireland.

Relationships between Men and Women

Betraying a husband or a wife has been, is and, will be a major problem for human beings and their societies. Everyone is terrified of finding out that their significant other has cheated on them. In Marie de France's, Laustic and The Tale of the Husband and the Parrot the wives cheat on their husbands in different ways. Also in the stories there are two birds that get killed by the husbands, who were tricked by their wives into killing them. Even though the birds were killed they represented different things. The love that the two wives have for the men other than their husband is different. There are similarities in the two stories they lead to very different emotional reactions. In Marie de France's, Laustic the attraction between the wife and the young knight is a romantic and loving relationship, but in and The Tale of the Husband and the Parrot the relationship between of the wife and the lover is based only in physical attraction.

Both women cheated on their husbands, but both have different type of love for the other man. In The Tale of the Husband and the Parrot the love that the wife had for her lover was portrayed to be just a physical attraction. We learn that when the author says " the parrot gave him a day-by-day account of what his wife had done with her lover and how the two carried on in his absence." (p. 15 line 1) When a couple just " just carries on" it's for the sake of physical attraction. Also in my opinion if there was more than just a physical attraction the author would have gone on in detail to explain it, but he didn't. So it seems as if their relationship was based on sex. On the other hand, in the story Marie de France, Laustic the relationship between the young night and the wife was a romantic one. We learn that when the author says "They loved each other prudently and well" and " he loved his neighbor's wife and so persistently did he request her love, so frequent were his entreaties and so many qualities did he posses that she loved him above al things." (p 1775, line 11-15) Unlike the first story the author here goes in deep detail to show that two really love each other and they also love each other's qualities. Another reason why Marie de France, Laustic was a romantic story, because the author was a female and The Tale of the Husband and the Parrot wasn't romantic because the author was a man.

In both stories there's a bird that is killed but in both cases it represents different things. In The Tale of the Husband and the Parrot, the parrot is used to keep an eye on the wife. I think the parrot represents the husband, because the parrot was used to keep an eye on the wife just like the husband had done all of his life. In Laustic the nightingale represents the relationship of the wife and the young knight. Just as the nightingale can only come out at night and sing, the wife and the knight can only see each other at night.

Also both wives are able to lie and trick their husbands in different ways and for different reasons. In The Tale of the Husband and the Parrot, the wife tricks her husband into killing the parrot. We learn that when the author says " she ordered one of her maid to take the grinding stone and grind under the cage, ordered a second maid to sprinkle water over the cage, and ordered a third to carry a steel mirror back and forth all night long." ( p 15 line 15-18) This made the parrot think there was a storm. When the husband asked the parrot what he saw the night before. The parrot said I couldn't see anything because there was a storm. The husband thought the parrot was crazy and killed him. The wife tricked her husband to get revenge on the parrot for telling on her. In Laustic, the wife didn't really want to kill the nightingale but that was a way into tricking her husband and making up an excuse for why she was staying at her window all night long. We learn that when the wife says "lord anyone who does not hear the song of the nightingale knows none of the joy of this world." ( p 1775 line8-41) The song that the wife is referring to is the love that she has for the young knight and she would do anything to go and see him. Including lying to her husband or using her surroundings to get to see him.

One major difference between the two stories is that Marie de France 's Laustic has a lot of symbolism in it and The Tale of the Husband and the Parrot has very little. One of the symbols used in the Marie de France Laustic is the structure of the house and the window. "Their houses, halls and keeps were close by each other and there was no barrier or division, apart from a high wall of dark-hued stone. When she stood at her bedroom window, the lady could talk to her beloved in the other house and he to her, and they could toss gifts to each other." ( p 1775 line18-) The author is trying to say that they were really close to each other and there was nothing keeping them from each other but the walls. To the wife the window was her favorite spot in the house because it was the place where she spent more time and the place where she could see her love. Another place where we see symbolism is in the end of the story where the author says " He had a small vessel prepared, jot of iron or steel, but of pure gold with fine stones, very precious and valuable. On it he carefully placed a lid and put the nightingale in it. The he had the casket sealed and carried it with him at all times." (p 1776 line 0-4) The reason why the vessel was made out of gold with fine stones and not of steel was to show how important the wife was to him and how much he loved her. Also the reason for carrying the casket with him was so he could have something to constantly remind him of the love of his love.

Overall these two stories had similarities but these similarities led to significant differences. During the whole human history people slept around and cheated on their husbands or wives. One major difference between the two stories is the change of women's role in society. In The Tale of the Husband and the Parrot the women seem like the weren't thought as much and weren't able to do what they wanted to do. In Laustic we see that women have began to write and moved up in the society. Up to this period women weren't able to do anything and the world was a world that was dominated by man. Now they are able to express themselves and their feelings.

Elvis Presley revolutionized American popular music with his earthy singing style and became a hero to two generations of rock n roll fans.

Elvis Aaron Presley was born to Vernon and Gladys Presley in a two-room house in Tupelo, Mississippi on January 8, 15. His twin brother, Jessie Garon, was stillborn, leaving Elvis to grow up as an only child. He and his parents moved to Memphis, Tennessee in 148, and Elvis graduated from Humes High School there in 15. Raised in a religious atmosphere, Presley began his singing career by performing hymns and gospel tunes with his parents, Vernon and Gladys, at concerts and state fairs. His parents bought him his first guitar at age 11, and he remained close to them even after acquiring a rebellious image. Elvis' musical influences were of the pop and country music of the time, the gospel music he heard in church and at the all-night gospel sings he frequently attended, and the black R&B he absorbed on historic Beale Street as a Memphis teenager. Elvis Presley was 18 when he walked into a Memphis studio and paid $4 to record My Happiness and That's When Your Heartaches Begin as a present for his mother. And in 154 he began his singing career with the legendary Sun Records label in Memphis. In late 155, his recording contract was sold to RCA Victor. By 156, he was an international sensation and his sound came exploding out of every radio in the country. With a sound and style that uniquely combined his diverse musical influences and challenged the social and racial barriers of the time, he ushered in a whole new era of American music and popular culture.

He was a young, hip-thrusting singer and his first appearance on the Ed Sullivan show left many shocked. While millions of teenagers screamed in unison across the land, a Catholic priest in New York scorned Sullivan for this moral injury and condemned Presley for his voodoo of defiance and frustration. No American performer had so broad an impact on culture around the world. In 158, Communists blamed the influence of Presley for a riot in East Berlin as youths threatened to kill a border guard. In 164, Presley received a write-in vote for President. A Memphis businessman who got in a fistfight with the singer had to close his shop because fans picketed the place. Other performers were puzzled by the strong reaction the young singer got from audiences. Jerry Lee Lewis took to closing his shows by standing on the piano in an attempt to upstage Elvis. But it did no good. Presley was even able to take others' material -- like Carl Perkins' Blue Suede Shoes -- and make it a hit of even greater magnitude. Elvis had the looks on me, Perkins once told an interviewer. The girls were going for him for more reasons than music. Elvis was hittin em with sideburns, flashy clothes and no ring on that finger. I had three kids. There was no way of keeping Elvis from being the man in that music.

He starred in successful films, made history with his television appearances and specials, and knew great acclaim through his many, often record-breaking, live concert performances on tour and in Las Vegas. Globally, he has sold over one billion records, more than any other artist. His American sales have earned him gold, platinum or multi-platinum awards for 11 different albums and singles, far more than any other artist. Among his many awards and accolades were 14 Grammy nominations ( wins) from the National Academy of Recording Arts & Sciences, the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award, which he received at age 6, and his being named One of the Ten Outstanding Young Men of the Nation for 170 by the United States Jaycees. Without any of the special privileges his celebrity status might have afforded him, he honorably served his country in the U.S. Army. His talent, good looks, charisma, and good humor endeared him to millions, as did the humility and human kindness he demonstrated throughout his life. He is regarded as one of the most important figures of twentieth century popular culture.
