Requiring individuals to recite the Pledge of Allegiance containing the

phrase Under God clearly violates the doctrine of separation of church

and state.

The original pledge of allegiance was written by Francis Bellamy (1855 11), a Baptist Minister. The pledge was written in August of 18. Francis Bellamy was a Christian Socialist and the original version of the pledge of allegiance was as follows I pledge allegiance to my Flag and (to) the Republic for which it stands, one nation, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all. He considered placing the word, equality, in his Pledge, but knew that the state superintendents of education on his committee were against equality for women and African Americans. [ to added in October, 18. ]

Custom Essays on The pledge of allegiance

According to Bellamys granddaughter, he would have resented this change. Bellamy had been pressured into leaving his church in 181 because of his socialist sermons. During his retirement he stopped attending church completely because he disliked the racial bigotry.

The Pledge of Allegiance never would have been written and promoted if it hadn't been for the Youths Companion in 18. The Companion was the largest weekly magazine at that time. Today, the magazine and its owner and editor, Daniel Ford, are largely forgotten.

Francis Bellamy, who was raised by his mother attended the schools in Rome, including the new Rome Free Academy. He graduated in 187 and was the first president of its Alumni Association. In September 187 he entered the University of Rochester and pursued the regular course in preparation for the Baptist ministry

In 1 and 14 the National Flag Conference changed the Pledges words, my Flag, to the Flag of the United States of America. Bellamy, who didn't like this change protested unsuccessfully.

After a campaign by the Knight of Columbus in 154, Congress added the words, under God, to the Pledge. The Pledge was now not only served as a patriotic oath but also as a public prayer.

Just recently the th Circuit Court of Appeals ruled the reciting of the Pledge of Allegiance unconstitutional (Newdow vs. US Congress). The th Circuit District Court of Appeals is considered the most liberal and most overturned District Court in the US.

The th Circuit Court of Appeals covers the entire West Coast including Hawaii and Alaska.

According to Micheal Newdow, an atheist who represented himself Pro Se, the words "under God" in the pledge of allegiance were unconstitutional because they are a violation of the Establishment clause in the First Amendment.

Newdow claimed that his daughter suffers injuries when she has to listen to her classmates proclaiming, in a ritual manner, that there is a God and that our nation is a nation under God.

Requiring students to recite the pledge first was noted as a violation of the First Amendment in the case West Virginia State Board of Education v. Barnette.

Newdow asked the Court to require Congress to alter the Pledge and immediately remove the words "under God" from the same.

According to Newdow the pledge endorses religion and since he is an atheist believes that "Parents have a right to direct a religious upbringing of their children, and on that basis, have standing to protect their right."

Let's take a closer look at the establishment clause.

"The establishment clause prohibits the government from passing legislation to establish an official religion or preferring one religion over another. It enforces the separation of church and state. Some governmental activity related to religion has been declared constitutional by the Supreme Court. For example, providing bus transportation for parochial school students and the enforcement of blue laws is not prohibited. The free exercise clause prohibits the government, in most instances, from interfering with a persons practice of their religion."

The Court finds that indeed with the statement that the United States is a nation "under God" in fact is an endorsement of religion, it endorses monotheism.

The ruling itself upset many Americans, the President himself declared in a speech on 4th of July that our nation is indeed "one nation under God", the Senate passed a -0 resultion stating that they are fully behind the pledge and that they will certainly not change the wording of the Pledge.

The public seemed to have in large taken the same views as Congress and the President have.

However we have to look at this from Mr. Newdow's perspective. He as an atheist sure has the right to choose a religious upbringing that he seems fit for his daughter. In his case, it is no religion at all. How hard is it for him to explain to his daughter why in the Pledge of Allegiance her fellow students claim that our nation is a nation under God, when on the other hand the seperation of Church and Government is clearly stated in the First Amendment. So how constitutional is it really to claim on one hand that we are separating Church and Government but yet we are "forcing" atheists to read "in God we trust" on our money and subject their children to the recitement of the Pledge of Allegiance which includes the word God as well.

In my personal opinion the words "under God" should be removed from the Pledge of Allegiance not only because I believe it is unconstitutional, but also because there are people in this nation that not only not believe in God, but they might believe in more than one God, they might believe in Allah or Shiva.

" the task for the teacher (teaching science) is to find ways of helping children transform their own beliefs into ideas and explanations more consonant with the explanations accepted by conventional science." McGuigan and shilling p6

The constructivist approach to teaching advocates that the teaching stems from the child's own beliefs and ideas. " Constructivist learning - That teachers should take pupils ideas seriously so that changes made in them make sense to the pupils and the new ideas are owned by them. ( The teaching of science in primary schools, Wayne Harlen, 16, second edition, page 17). Generally it is without complexity for a teacher to find out the child's own ideas. However, the next step which is the finding out where to take the idea and how to ensure that it is science based is rather more intricate. This is where strategies and methods can be utilised to aid this difficulty.

So, how does one incorporate constructivist teaching into the classroom. Watson and Bentley (11) identified five tenets that act as a response to the above question, they are as follows. Commencing learning in response to stage of the learner, Progression through a process of orientation, elicitation, restructuring and application, thirdly, the designing of bridges in order to facilitate taking the child to the desired point, the induction of active learning, and finally, the ability a teacher has to act as a facilitator. I shall now discuss these factors further in more detail, to begin I will look at the first point made. " Commencing learning in response to the stage of the learner". This is a very prevalent method of teaching concerning constructivism, it simply allows the teacher to concentrate on the individuals own experiences giving the teacher the opportunity to continue the teaching from this stage. This method is said to facilitate the understanding of new material. For example, a topic such as sound can be easily generalised to child's already known ideas and experiences and then simply transferred to another more suitable context, one which the teacher wishes to teach or discuss. The second aspect, which states that progression through orientation, elicitation, restructuring and application can help to introduce constructivism into the classroom is centred around providing the right ambiance in order to support the child's ideas, thoughts and feelings towards any given topic. One should encourage the learner as well as providing challenging experiences. A method in which this can be carried out, is to recreate a child's own experience of the topic by using props etc to prompt the child to express their ideas. Thirdly, I will discuss the aspect of designing bridges to take the learner to the desired point. It is essential that the teacher has the ability to morph a child's idea into a appropriate and useful point. "The task of the teacher is to know the pupils well enough so that instructional steps are strong and help transport ideas for particular individuals". Without this competence constructivism in the classroom ceases to exist.

The fourth aspect involves incorporating active learning in order to promote constructivism, active learning can take place in the techniques of group work, and collaborative learning. Thus enabling teaching to be interactive and involving the whole classroom. The fifth tenet is the ability for a teacher to act as a facilitator within the classroom. It can be difficult for a child to express their own ideas and experiences in a classroom environment. The process of "circle time" is a new and flourishing method of allowing children to hold a discussion without the fear of ridicule, therefore this is a example of how the teacher can act as an facilitator, it is also effective because it can be applied across the curriculum in a variety of topics and subjects. For example if a certain science topic is proving to be to hard to grasp, circle time can prove to be an effective method in which the children can convey their problems and misconceptions concerning the desired topic. This point is largely in correspondence with management of the classroom. Another factor with reference to the induction of constructivism is the ability of questioning techniques. Certain methods of questioning can prompt a child. The idea is to encourage pupils to explore their own ideas rather than the ideas dictated to them.

To conclude, the most obvious aspect of constructivism has to be the positive element that the ideas originate from the children, therefore, there is the opportunity "to use the information about pupils ideas in order to note what they already know and so to teach them something new, or to note what wrong ideas they have in order to correct them or conflict them" (The teaching of Science in Primary schools, Wayne Harlen, 16, second edition, page 51). Evidence provided by the SPACE project cycle of teaching steps depicts that constructivism is very effective as the framework is " Loose enough not to become a restricting routine" ( The teaching of Science in Primary schools, Wayne Harlen, 16, second edition, page 4). However, it is evident that the constructivist approach does have underlying complex problems, for example, it is obligatory for the child to want to converse their ideas, as well as the difficult predicament of the teacher having the ability to transform the ideas into a suitable context.

The environment and heredity are both prevalent themes in this novel, with the environment involving the two households in the novel and with heredity involving all the major and most of the minor characters. Since these two themes include the characters and the different settings, they are involved with the structure of the novel and are therefore very important to the story. The theme of heredity is very complex because of how it changes throughout the novel. As new characters are introduced, new hatred and love arise between them, while the theme of environment stays the same and strengthens while the story moves on. With each household contrasting the other and the tenants suiting the home they reside in, we see a commonality between the two.

Wuthering Heights is described as a bad environment because of the characters that reside there, and the way the house is maintained. Most of these characters are from the Earnshaw and Heathcliffe families. Most of the characters from these families that reside in Wuthering Heights have an imperfection of some sort, whether physical, emotional or mental. Hindley Earnshaw and Heathcliffe are the two characters that began this degradation and were responsible for ending it. After years of living with each other Hindley had a drinking problem and wanted to kill Heathcliffe, who himself despised Hindley. This anger was also directed at the Lintons in Thrushcross Grange due to Heathcliffe's hatred for them, specifically Edgar. Hareton, Hindley's son, was originally an illiterate and violent male, while Linton Heathcliffe had a natural weakness to getting sick. Characters that move from other households into Wuthering Heights acquire negative qualities as well. Cathy Linton was originally very polite and cheerful, but once she was forced to live in Wuthering Heights she became hurtful and critical "'I don't want your help,' she snapped; 'I can get them for myself.'…'You scandalous old hypocrite!' she replied…'I'll show you how far I've progressed in the Black Art'" . Seeing as this house is home to many mean spirited characters and turns good, decent people into generally bad individuals it can be said that symbolically this is some sort of hell.

In contrast with Wuthering Heights, Thrushcross Grange is a pleasant place to be, and the characters that live there prove this. With Wuthering Heights making people mean spirited Thrushcross Grange does the opposite and makes people proper. This is true with Catherine Earnshaw. She originally was very rebellious against her father, but once she resided in Thrushcross Grange for several weeks she became very proper "Catherine had kept up her acquaintance with the Lintons… and as she had no temptation to show her rough side in their company" (Wuthering Heights, pg. 6). The people that lived there originally were proper too, for example Edgar Linton, who was a major influence on Catherine's transformation. Before being forcibly moved to Wuthering Heights, Cathy Linton was a very cheerful and proper lady as well. For a household that houses such proper people, it is no surprise that the house itself has a proper look to it; a look of high class "A splendid place carpeted with crimson, and crimson-covered chairs and tables, and a pure white ceiling bordered by gold, a shower of glass-drops hanging with silver chains from the centre, and shimmering with little soft tapers."(Wuthering Heights, pg. 51). With the luxurious house and the polite and proper people that reside in it, Thrushcross Grange could be interpreted as a symbol of Heaven.

What is interesting about this novel is how there is a union with the household and the residents. Wuthering Heights is described negatively as being a desolate and dead home with horrible weather "On that bleak hilltop the earth was hard with a black frost, and the air made me shiver through every limb."(Wuthering Heights, pg. 14). The characters that reside there have mostly negative characteristic as well, like Hindley, Heathcliffe, Hareton, Linton and Cathy Linton. Thrushcross Grange is at a contrast with Wuthering Heights because the home itself is described positively as being luxurious and beautiful. The characters that reside here are at a contrast with the characters from Wuthering Heights and have mostly positive characteristics, like Edgar, Catherine Earnshaw and Cathy Linton. With this kind of contrast, it is no surprise that there is a place of neutrality from both extremes. The Moors is this place of neutrality, and it has always been described as being quiet and peaceful where people can share their true feelings. It was originally Catherine Earnshaw and Heathcliffe's getaway from all the anger and conflict. All that mattered to them was their love for each other, and while at the Moors, that's all that mattered to them. The way they could forget about their troubles shows the power of the Moors and its peaceful atmosphere. Each environment had a great power over its inhabitants, making the characters emotional and physical characteristics fit the mood of the environment itself.

There are three societies that have had a large impact on the environment, the hunter-gatherers, agricultural and industrial societies. Each of these three societies have effected the environment in its species diversity, stability, cycling of minerals, energy flow, population control and effects on the water cycle. Then environment has changed a great deal from the beginning of the time of the first intelligent humans, about 15 thousand years ago.

Hunter-gatherers effected the species diversity by changing the distribution of plants as they moved from location to location. They carried seeds of plants in one area, with them to the next area they settled and spread plant diversification. They also had the possibility of hunting animal species to extinction. But this is not a proven fact and may have been caused by changes in climate from the Ice Age. The agricultural society clear-cut a lot of land in order to make room for their crops to be planted and thus effected the tree population by severely decreasing it. Clear-cutting of the tropical rainforest for wood and farm land and of land used for the increase in necessity of space for the increase of inhabitants for the industrialists significantly decreased the amount of plants and organisms. In the tropical rainforest, where there is the most diverse amount of species, the amount of organisms that are now extinct as a result add up to millions.

The stability of the hunter-gatherer population was very stabile. They purposefully kept the population from growing by practices such as abstinence, abortion, infanticide, late marriage and late weaning. Those who were born had a long life-expectancy because of their healthy diet and exercise. During the agricultural revolution, the population became unstable and the population sky-rocketed. The need for children was strong for the help around the farm. Natural disasters and weather caused the agricultural dependant society to have large losses in population because there was no backup plan for food. The stability of the industrialists are more stabile that of the agriculturists, but still are not stable because people are unhealthy when it comes to food and the amount of children can still sometimes be very high although there is no need for the large numbers in relation to survival.

The minerals in the areas that the hunter-gatherers inhabited were not greatly effected because although they used resources around them, they were replaceable and were not used to the extent of extinction. The agriculturists started effecting the mineral cycle because of the soil erosion by settling large areas of land. The industrialist effected the minerals by using them for food, health, and various other reasons.

Buy The Human Impact on the Invironment term paper

The energy that hunter-gatherers used came from natural resources such as replaceable wood and sunlight. These things did not have a large impact on the environment because both are not limited resources. Most of the energy that the agricultural society used, also came from wood and sunlight, with the addition of running water for electricity. People in the industrial society started using fossil fuels as a source of energy. Fossil fuels are not replaceable and there is a limited supply of them, greatly decreasing the source that industrialists depend on for energy.

The population of the hunter-gatherers was controlled by the rustic living conditions which led to the survival of the physically fit and things such as disease that had no cure and the fact that there wasn't much need for children, other than to prevent extinction. There was no population control within the agricultural society because the use of children was very important in the success of farmers and they were also need for inheriting property. Population is controlled by birth control in the industrial age, except for in some areas of the world where they are not educated about it or for those who chose not to use it. Birth control is way for people to control when they are to have children and how many. There is still a constant increase of population occurring every day.

The effect that the hunter-gatherers had on the water cycle came from the waste products of the people. The waste went straight into local water systems and quickly polluted them and disease struck the organisms that inhabited and drank the water. The agricultural society polluted their water with the half of the fertilizer they used being run-off. Also, in the United States, 80 percent of the freshwater was used for irrigation purposes for crops, which caused large water shortages. Since the soil was eroded from the crops, there was also an increase of floods. Industrialists burn coal and other fossil fuels and create pollution that gets into the water systems by acid rain. There is also run-off from existing farms and the introduction of man made pollutants that are not biodegradable, such as plastics, that will stay with us on the earth forever.

All three societies effected some of the six characteristics that humans have changed to the natural environment. The stability and control of population has effected the amount of natural resources and state of the environment. Without stability and control of the human population, the state of the environment has a tendency to be on a downfall without education and organized ways to stop the destruction.

Write my Essay on censorship for me

Censorship

The idea of censorship in our country is the idea that certain people are restricted from doing certain things because of safety or moral value. Is censorship a good idea? Or is it taking away our freedom to do what we want to do. Censorship is a good thing that our sociaty has. But there are some people out there in our sociaty that think censorship takes away our freedoms to do what we want to do.

The first example of the way we use censorship in our sociaty are the movie ratings. The movies today are rated G, PG, PG-1, and R. A rated G movie would not have scenes where someone is blowing someone's head off with a shotgun and blood and guts spilling everywhere. The reason for this is that some younger children may get scared if they see violence like that. It would not be the best thing for a young child to be thinking about stuff like that. If children are prone to seeing violence like that at a young age, they may cause themselves or someone else serious damage in the future (Goldberg 5). Children under a certain age probably should not watch TV shows or movies that have graphic violence in them until they understand about violence and how dangerous certain things are in the world today. Some children out there may think every thing they watch is true and fun to do. If a child watches a lot of violence, one day they might think it would be cool to go out and shoot someone for the fun of it. There are some children out there who are censored all the time on what they watch or do. Some of these children may not know how the real word works. They may think that nothing could ever happen to them and they will be safe all the time. Children should be censored on some things, but they also need to be told on how the real world is and not shelter them from that. For example, September 11 we experienced the most violent, tragic acts in American history. Children should not be sheltered by not knowing what goes on in the world (Cagle 0).

There are some people out there who think that no matter how old people are that they have the right to watch whatever they want to. It doesn't matter if they are thirty or ten, some people believe that anyone has a right to make a choice on what they want to watch. Some people don't mind their children watching R rated movies because they think that it won't them. Some people think that if their child is mature enough that they can watch what they want to. Do parents have a right to tell their children what to watch and what not to watch (Hauptman 4)? Until that child grows up and goes out on his/her own parents have the right to raise them however they want to.

Another form of censorship is what the government censors on us as a nation. For example, the parental advisory on tapes and CD's that are sold. The government decided in court that any album with lyrics that are bad such as violence, sex, and drug use will have a parental advisory placed on the cover of the album to warn kids that what they are buying is basically trash. Was this the right thing to do? Does the government have the right to tell us what is good to listen to and what isn't good to listen to? A lot of artists that made these albums were outraged because they said that it was taking away their freedom of speech and it would hurt their bank accounts because less people would buy their albums. Is censorship losing your freedom of speech(Foster 80)? This could not be losing your freedom of speech because the song artists still get to write whatever songs they want to write. The parental advisory is on the albums for a reason. It is there to warn children, not prohibit them from the music they want to listen to.

Censorship is also used in our school systems today. Children are being censored on what they are being taught, what they read. What they watch, and, in now in days, what they do on the computer in the classroom. Teachers are also being censored on what they teach or what they show their students. A teacher that would show a third grade class Saving private Ryan would probably be in big trouble. I don't think that teachers would also encourage their students to read playboy magazines either. That is a form of censorship. There was a problem at one elementary school where a student borrowed a book from the school library. The book was a scary stories book. The child had a problem with nightmares and when he read it the book scared him and upset the child. The mather of the child was mad at the school because they did not warn him. Should this tell us to take scary books out of our school system (Manly 16)? Books like that should not be taken out of the classroom, but teachers should censor students on what they are reading. Some teachers like to show their students videos for educational purposes. Teachers are censored on what kind of videos they can show. Computers are getting to be very popular in the classroom. Some first graders know more about computers than adults do. Teachers censor their students by making sure the students stay off bad sites or sites that are not educational. More and more teachers are going to computers for their classroom.

Censorship in our country mainly points to children. The reason we have a rating system, parental advisories, and censoring children in the classroom is to make them better and smarter in the long run. A lot of people may not like the idea of censorship at all. Others think that it is a necessity for moral values to be preserved in the great country we live in today.

Finding affordable malpractice insurance for many doctors is becoming a growing problem in the United States. Malpractice insurers are worried by a rise in malpractice awards by juries in their state. In turn, the insurers raise their premiums to a point where many doctors can’t afford it. Doctors are receiving malpractice bills that are twice as much than they were a couple of years ago. States with highest premiums are Florida, Nevada, and Pennsylvania. This crisis is concentrated in litigious states with generous juries and financially scared insurers. Some doctors try to protect themselves against possible lawsuits by ordering unnecessary tests, but that increases health costs. Approximately twenty states are showing signs of this crisis, twenty-four states are showing early symptoms of this crisis, and the rest are ok for now.

If this crisis gets worse, it could ultimately affect everybody because anybody could lose their doctor to this malpractice crisis. This crisis is concentrated only in certain states and certain specialties, but the problem is spreading. This situation forces many doctors to move to states where the premiums are more affordable, switch to more safer practices like dermatology and ophthalmology, or take the risk of practicing without insurance. Some veteran practitioners are just quitting altogether. As a result of losing their doctor to this crisis, many people are driving longer distances for a specific practice.

This problem definitely needs to be corrected, but there is no quick and easy solution available. Doctors feel that the main problems are judgments awarded for tragic but sometimes unavoidable outcomes. The insurers blame rate hike and policy cancellations on what they describe as a rising tide of lawsuits and one million dollar plus jury awards. Both doctors and patients are seeking malpractice reform from politicians. Many insurers and doctors feel that one solution to the crisis would be to put caps of $50,000 on non-economic damages awarded to pain and suffering. Republicans, whose campaigns are supported by doctors and insurance firms, endorse such legislation, and the House of Representatives has passed a bill along those lines. But plaintiff’s lawyers, who contribute heavily to the campaigns of Democrats, are lobbying their friends in the senate and reform may remain more of a rallying cry than a real prospect. Twice in the past two decades, Illinois state legislature has passed caps on non-economic jury awards only to have them struck down as unconstitutional by the state supreme court.

Critics blame the insurers rushing to make up for their losses in under priced premiums and poorly performing investments. An independent study by Weiss ratings shows that states with caps on malpractice damages have not enjoyed much relief in malpractice insurance premiums, but have instead seen insurers shore up profits.

Physicians deserve part of the blame too. â€Doctors,” says one doctor, â€haven’t sold themselves as a self policing group.” The vast majority of conscientious physicians have been forced to subsidize the higher insurance costs of a few incompetents. While the vast majority of doctors perform with care and lose few, if any, legal judgments or settlements, a small number of negligent or incompetent doctors endanger patients and drive up malpractice insurance costs for everyone. Doctors and hospitals too often fail to discipline repeat offenders. Hospitals are required to report to their state medical board any revocation, suspension or restriction of a doctors clinical privileges for more than thirty days. Hospitals face many incentives not to report a disciplined doctor and not to discipline him at all. A hospital may want to limit its liability by not airing the problem. Or it may be afraid of a legal battle with the physician.

American health care is getting out of control and the malpractice insurance issue is a mess. Reform is going nowhere. How do we fix all this? Caps on damages would limit non-economic jury awards for such injuries as pain and suffering. But Democrats, backed by trial lawyers, are blocking passage in the senate, claiming it would adversely affect victims who don’t work. Limiting lawyer fees would cap how much of a settlement or jury verdict attorneys can collect. Such a restriction would deter frivolous suits. Medical screening would raise the bar for gaining approval to go forward with a suit. Physicians say better screening would help weed out bogus claims. Whistle blowing would make it easier for a doctor to report a colleagues malpractice, but because they fear being sued or scrutinized themselves, many doctors are unwilling to speak up. Medical standards would measure a doctor’s performance against a statistical norm. This could rationalize malpractice premiums, which are based on a doctor’s specialty and location rather than objectively on performance.

In â€The Doctor Won’t See You Now.” Eisenberg, Daniel, et al. Time, 00 (pg. 46) writes about how this crisis is a problem for physicians and more of a problem for patients who search distances to find a new doctor. The crisis is just disrupting lives of many doctors and patients. This malpractice issue is a complex one as you try to analyze it. The crisis has not yet hit California, however, we all need to be aware that it is spreading and it affects everybody. Hopefully for everybody’s sake, a solution will come in the near future.

Early Country Early commercial country music was a direct descendant of the ballad and folk tradition brought to the American South by immigrants from the British Isles in the 18th and 1th centuries. When not carrying on the oral tradition of storytelling through song, old-time country music featured instrumentals with the fiddle usually taking the melodic role of the voice. Fiddlin John Carson combined the two traditions by singing and playing simultaneously on a 1 two-song 78, considered to be the first country music hit record.

The most important group of this era was undoubtedly The Carter Family -- their importance to the growth of country music cannot be overstated. The ultimate preservationists of the Southern folk tradition, the Carters are considered The First Family of Country Music; their song Will the Circle Be Unbroken is one of the great standards of country music as is Wildwood Flower, which first introduced Maybelle Carters influential guitar style. The Stone-man Family of Galax, Virginia were also forerunners in mountain music.

Jimmie Rodgers, The Father of Country Music (aka The Singing Brakeman/Americas Blue Yodeler) brought country music to a new level of acceptance and was one of the most influential singers in the annals of popular music. His unique vocal delivery and down-home lyrics catapulted him to national prominence and brought a new-found legitimacy to country music. An absolute original, his singing and writing style sounds as timely today as it did during his short recording career (17-).

Cowboy Cowboy music capitalized on Americas fascination with the Wild West, exploiting it both on record and in Hollywood films. The hillbillies were now transformed into dashing young cowboys and cowgirls singing songs of romance and the range.

Portraying an essentially romantic vision of the lonesome prairie, the movies routinely featured a free-spirited cowboy singing around the campfire after a hard days work of shoot-em-ups and chasing down runaway coaches. This cleaning up of the country image as exemplified by Gene Autry, Roy Rogers and The Sons of the Pioneers helped to increase countrys popularity.

Western swing A Depression-era music born in the dusty dance halls of Texas and Oklahoma, western swing married the sensibility of country to the sophisticated rhythms of jazz. Using something closer to a Big Band lineup (often including horns) than a traditional country configuration, Bob Wills soon became the undisputed king of the genre.

With his band The Texas Playboys, Wills was a true innovator who took great pride in honing his bands improvisational skills. His ability to get the best out of his players on any given night had a profound effect on the direction of country music. Other western swing bands include one of the founders of the genre, Milton Brown (and his Musical Brownies) and Spade Cooley. Today, bands like Asleep at the Wheel carry on this musical tradition.

Bluegrass An intricate, purely acoustic music which is easily identified by its two and three-part vocal harmonies, energetic drive and unbridled emotion. This high, lonesome sound grew out of the string-band movement of the late 10s and takes its name from its creator, Bill Monroe, who dubbed his band the Blue Grass Boys.

Former Bluegrass Boys Flatt & Scruggs theme songs for Bonnie & Clyde and The Beverly Hillbillies introduced bluegrass to a whole new audience in the 60s. Today, bluegrass remains highly influential, as evidenced by artists like Alison Krauss.

Honky-tonk A free-wheeling, often boisterous style of music spawned in the Southern bars (aka honky-tonks) of post-WWII. By the late 140s the venue for country music had shifted from social gatherings to watering holes where performers no longer had to worry about keeping up appearances or espousing family values in their songs. As a result, lyrics soon began to reflect the hard, cold facts of modern blue-collar life.

Hank Williams and his songs of cheatin women and ramblin men turned honky-tonk into the prevailing voice of country in the late 140s and early 50s. He lived it like he sang it, however, and his excessive lifestyle would eventually lead to his untimely death at .

Rockabilly In the Memphis of 15, race lines were sharply divided -- most blacks listened to rhythm and blues (aka race music) while country was the music favored by most white people. Looking for a way to sell R&B to a white audience, producer Sam Phillips lamented that his Sun Records would make a fortune if only he could find a white boy who could sing colored. Enter Elvis Aron Presley.

By putting a backbeat under Bill Monroes Blue Moon of Kentucky and combining it with Elvis Presleys breakthrough vocal style, producer Sam Phillips created the hybrid that would come to be known as rockabilly. Though its popularity barely made it through the 50s, artists as diverse as Johnny Cash, Jerry Lee Lewis and Carl Perkins all began their recording careers in the genre.

All country music stiles!

Write your History of Communication research paper

1. Reading, Writing, & Thinking

I can significantly see a progression in my writing and reading skills from my first journal to my last. By reading the assigned selections, I feel like I can evaluate readings better and come up with my own conclusions. Because the journal questions were more opinion-based, this allowed me to read the selections, try to analyze them, and then come to a sound conclusion based on supporting evidence.

The Comm. Ancients section of the course was a little difficult for me because philosophy has never been a strong point of mine. Although I was uninterested in the material and found it difficult to grasp, I still think it is a necessary entity of the course. It allows you to progress through history and apply communication to ithence, the title of the course. After reading Cicero, Gorgias, Aristotle, and Plato, I feel like I can understand the concept of rhetoric better and can more importantly, read and write about it easier.

. Media

The discussions and focus on media throughout the course was very interesting to me. Because we live in a media-rich society, it is important to discuss this powerful force and try to analyze it the best we could. I only missed one or two classes I think mostly because class time was used effectively. The lectures, audio and visual clips, and presentations were very informative. I am glad the course is not centered on memorization because I don't have to sit and write the power point slides down word-for-word in my notebook. I can listen to what the professor has to say and apply it to my field of interest or the present day.

I think my appreciation for TV news has decreased since the start of the course. Almost every journalism and communication course I have had at Duquesne has stressed the importance of newspapers and their ability to cover the whole story and offer a wide variety of opinions, whereas television can only show you a minute and a half package of something. I'm beginning to see why this is the case among college professors, but I still keep a sense of awareness for TV news because I know it can dominate public opinion, and it is the way most Americans still get their news.

. Skills

I think my skills have most definitely increased since the beginning of the course. All the entities of communication (reading, writing, speaking, reasoning) are tied in a direct relationship so when one increases, the rest tend to follow. Because I can read and understand what I'm reading more effectively, I can express my feelings in writing better and I can speak with more confidence.

I have learned that it is often how you say things, not what you say. I can take this into account because to speak with confidence and "eloquence" allows others to look at you as if you really knew what you were talking about. I think you still need to have some substance behind what you say, but the better speaker will always have the upper hand because he knows what his audience wants to hear and can tell it to them easier.

4. Self-Analysis

One thing I would change about the way I handled the course would be to get things done earlier. The journals were often a burden on Sunday afternoon because I would rush to get what I had all week to get done in one day. If you take one or two readings a day then it can make things a lot easier on yourself. This would also have given me better understandings of the readings.

I would also have not put the World War II project off for as long as I did. I wasn't sure the significance of the assignment of how it applied to communications, but sometimes you have to do what is assigned even if you don't like it. After I took the time to do a little research and write a paper I was glad I did because I know a lot more about the war than most of my friends.

It is also important to have good communication with your writing partner. My partner and I are friends and speak in class but we don't take advantage of the opportunity to help each other with our work. Getting advice from a classmate about your WWII project, your journals, or The Screwtape letters, can help out a lot. It is always better to have two opinions than one.

5. Suggestions for Improvement

There aren't any noticeable changes that I can see to help the course significantly. One thing I did enjoy was the class discussions because it allowed for a wide range of people to get their opinion heard. But once they were heard many of them did not face any opposition. Many things we talked about in class were opinion-based so maybe the addition of a small debate fit into the course schedule would be interesting. This would allow writing partners to get into groups and put their opinion to the test against another. It would also force people to apply facts, substance and communication skills to their debate. And once the debate is over, you can see who won by taking a class poll and analyzing what the winning group did. Did they speak eloquently to sway the judges or did they have sound evidence and proof to their opinion?

I enjoyed watching Network because I thought it was a film that really tied in a lot of themes from class. I'm not sure if there are any other films that do the same thing, but maybe adding another one to a journal somewhere or doing one as an extra credit could be interesting. It is always educational and entertaining for a student to get to watch a film and learn something at the same time.

The contras were an American backed rebel association brought in to overthrow the Nicaraguan administration customary of the Sandinistas. Contra strategies incorporated the unsystematic homicide of defenseless villagers in isolated areas. The burning of educational institutions, health centers and residences. They lacked any popular support in their country, but were very well equipped and frequently capable to crush the poorly prepared peoples armed forces of Nicaragua. They were utilized to frighten the local inhabitants into voting for an American supported aspirant in elections. The warning being that if the erroneous individual was voted for, the Contra measures would continue. The warning worked.

Affairs with the United States weakened little by little, particularly subsequent to Ronald Reagan becoming president in 181. His government was strongly anti-Communist and was certain that the Sandinistas were behind rebel armed forces in other Central American countries and were directly connected with Cuba and the USSR. Reagan cut all aid to Nicaragua, forced an monetary embargo, and began supplying funds, weapons, and instruction for an equipped resistance guerrilla force recognized as the contras. These contra army, based in nearby countries, incorporated previous members of Somoza's National Guard as well as additional Nicaraguans discontented with the new administration. Nicaragua, facing contra assaults, began getting military aid from Cuba along with the Soviet Union. The administration suppressed the media, repeatedly imprisoned opposition politicians, and enlarged efforts to enforce a socialist replica on the financial system. Large elements of a private industry division continued, nonetheless, opposition politics were never prohibited.

Elections were held in 184, however the majority opposition parties declined to take part. The Sandinista aspirant, Daniel Ortega Saavedra, won an effortless triumph, furthermore the Sandinistas gained an enormous majority in the new National Assembly. The United States plus a great deal of the opposition resorted to militia to attempt to remove the Sandinistas. Fatalities from the contra war increased, and the danger of war among Nicaragua and Honduras became greater than before. Honduran officials permitted the contras to assault Nicaragua from bases in their countryside, develop their own army, and allowed the United States to carry out armed training and construct airstrips from which to aid the contras. Members of the U.S. Congress who opposed the contra guidelines tried to limit financial support, although they had only partial achievements until 186, once the scandal identified as the Iran-Contra matter exposed that Reagan's government officials had violated U.S. law to obtain support of the contras.

Other countries in the hemisphere attempted to arbitrate the Central American catastrophe. The Contadora grouping of Mexico, Venezuela, Colombia, and Panama began its labors in 18 but failed and had a tiny accomplishment. In 187 Costa Rica's leader, Oscar Arias Sánchez, began an attempt to have Central America's presidents solve their individual problems. In 188, the Sandinistas decided to start discussions in the company of the contras, however combating persistented for quite a few months. Pressures for a negotiated resolution were building. Nicaragua's financial system was devastated by the effects of the fighting and the U.S. prohibition, low prices for exports, and a sequence of natural disasters. Many of the Sandinista administrations monetary policies, which implicated state management of imports and exports, emphasis on agricultural cooperatives, and limitations on private industry, proved ineffective. At its most terrible point, in 188, Nicaragua had the world's highest yearly inflation rate, with estimates ranging from ,000 percent to 6,000 percent. Soviet union aid also decreased in the late 180s, as the Soviet financial system worsened and Communist regimes were defeated in Eastern Europe. At the same time, U.S. labors to come across a negotiated answer in Central America enlarged with the 18 appointment of President George Bush to succeed Reagan.

Do my essay on Contras, What Were They, and How Did They Affect Nicaragua? CHEAP !

Near the beginning of 18, Central American leaders approved a plan for disarming the contras, sending out a United Nations peacekeeping operation, and holding internationally supervised appointment in Nicaragua in early 10. Convinced of triumph, the Sandinistas calmed prohibitions on political opponents and permitted a somewhat liberated campaign. Fourteen opposition parties created the National Opposition Union with Violeta Barrios de Chamorro, as their presidential aspirant. Campaigning on a pledge to stop armed recruitment and encourage national reconciliation, Chamorro won a striking triumph with 55 percent of the vote, defeating current president Ortega, the Sandinista aspirant, who acknowledged only 41 percent.

" The only limits to growth are the limits of the human imagination."

Mankind has never failed to overcome obstacles that nature has thrown its way. As population growth becomes an increasingly pressing issue, each nation's level of development will dictate their ability to handle its natural consequences. An African country, like Kenya for instance, is not capable of handling a population explosion for various reasons. A nation from Asia, like China, would perhaps be better equipped. A North American country, like the United States, is able to handle population problems quite easily due to their level of development. The measure of the human imagination is the only thing that can limit population growth.

Kenya is an under developed nation in the heart of Africa. It recorded the highest growth rate ever at 4. percent in 188. In the last fifty years, its population has increased sixfold. Despite efforts to reduce its growth rate, it is still relatively high at . percent. Kenya cannot support its rapidly expanding populace. It simply does not have enough resources or opportunities for the new generations. Kenya has recognized its inability to maintain its growing population and has also recognized that this growth will only hinder economic development and improved health. Already, Kenya is struggling to provide for its current number of people. Its standard of living is low, and many are in poor health due to expensive and inaccessible healthcare facilities. Education is not affordable as school fees are too expensive for most families. Few job prospects are on the market, making chances for survival dim. This lack of development has put a limit on growth for this nation. Unless outside help is sought, it is likely this nation will die off on account of resource scarcity. Kenya cannot handle the consequences of a population explosion as their government cannot provide the innovation and technology to support a booming populace. Most of the Kenyan people are uneducated and in poverty. With such poor living conditions, this country cannot risk further deterioration that will inevitably result from a high rate of growth. A developing nation may have a greater chance for survival.

China is an Asian country sporting the largest population in the world. With more than 1. billion people, one-fifth of the world's total, China has managed to implement a one-child policy that has reduced its growth rate significantly. China has undergone massive economic development in the past forty years and but still carries a relatively low standard of living due to rapid population expansion. Its "one-child" policy has been very well enforced and encouraged with benefits to participating families, and penalties for those who do not comply. This policy has also altered women's roles in society, and has given them more opportunities and respect than ever before. China is steadily developing as a nation and is self-sufficient enough to treat its own problems with creative policies and political strategies. Although they are facing a somewhat controversial future, this developing nation will assuredly find a solution to their impending problems. Currently, their growth must be limited for China to have a chance at survival. Once they have their population under control, however, there are no limits to how large this nation can become if their technological advancements and innovations continue. Their ability to deal with a population explosion is still questionable in comparison to a developed country.

Custom Essays on Limits to Growth

The United States of America is arguably the strongest political and economical power in the world. Its land mass similar to China, whose population is 4.5 times greater. This nation has a population growth of 0.87 percent per year due to births as well as immigration. The only problem the United States will face in the midst of a population explosion is the heavy consumption of its resources. This country, however, has enough technology and money to generate or purchase resources from other parts of the world. America will continue to support itself because of the intelligence and creativity they have implemented in their structure and government. They have taken advantage of science and the human imagination. In this case, there is no limit to growth as no limit exists to the technological and scientific discoveries of mankind.

The Cornucopian Theory states that large populations and high growth rates are no issue to be concerned with, since the earth can support greater numbers than it already does. Limits only exist if science and technology fail to advance. Growth creates jobs, produces materials, and is necessary to end world poverty. Levels of development will determine a nation's ability to handle population growth. A country's ability to maximize the human imagination and intelligence will ultimately define its proficiency in national survival and prosperity. Whether growth is high or low, a developed nation will weather the consequences more readily than a nation that is less developed or still developing.

Growth will only be restricted if mankind fails to be innovative. Lack of technological and scientific advancements in a less developed nation like Kenya will force the government to hinder growth. China, a developing nation, can only grow if creative solutions can be found to their present troubles. A developed country like the United States has no limitations in terms of population growth since they have established no limits to their ingenuity and imagination. If the global community is willing to work together, all borders can be lifted and growth will no longer be an issue.

Thank you for your letter. My reply details the circumstances leading up to and including the recent incident at Mukden, and the actions of our military in response. I have also explained our current economic and political standing on certain issues which will help you understand our perspective on these events. I also aim to assure you of my government's peaceful intentions for Manchuria.

We have experienced major difficulties in our relationship with China over the past few years. Of concern has been the influence exerted by Communists within the Nanking government, as well as internal dissension within the administration. In 18 our emissary to China, Gonsuke Hayashi, spoke with the leader of the Kuomintang, Young Marshal Chang Hseuh-Liang, regarding this situation. Hayashi stressed that Japan was willing to assist Chang in suppressing dissident elements within his ranks. This help was refused, and Hayashi made it very clear that Japan would not hesitate to intervene in Chinese affairs if Japanese subjects and interests were threatened. This echoed a statement made in 15 by General Shirakawa of our Kwantung Army. Recently, Chinese behaviour towards Japan has become increasingly hostile. A prime example of this is the assassination of a Japanese citizen, Shintaro Nakamura, on the grounds of spying.

On the 18th of September at approximately 1000pm, a section of the South Manchurian Railway north of Mukden was blown up by Chinese soldiers as a prelude to a general assault on the Japanese police force. These soldiers also attacked Japanese citizens at the Mukden station. My government wished to avoid a military solution to the problem; indeed, I personally sent Major General Tatekawa directly to Manchuria with a message requesting a peaceful solution to the impending crisis. Unfortunately he was not able to deliver this message in time.

Under these circumstances, Lieutenant General Shigeru Honjo of the Kwantung Army, assisted by Colonels Itagaki and Ishihara and General Miyake, have decided to quell hostilities by means of the military occupation of Manchuria. This is required in order to protect the Japanese population and significant capital investment in Manchuria from the obviously aggressive intent of Chiang Kai-shek and his Kuomintang Army. I must stress that we do not intend to colonise Manchuria, and will seek to quickly establish a Chinese administration.

Our interests in Manchuria are of vital national importance. Since the economic crash of the 10's, unemployment in Japan has been intolerably high. Our silk industry has been ravaged as a result of the dramatic decrease of imports to the United States. As Japan has few natural resources of great abundance, this downturn has been catastrophic for our economy. Manchuria, however, is rich in those resources we lack and desperately need, namely coal and steel.

Manchuria also assists us with our problem of overpopulation, which currently exceeds 700,000 people per year. At the end of the Great War our colonial acquisitions, which included Shantung Province, Siberia and northern Sakhalin, were denied us at the Washington Conference. Our government representatives at the conference cooperated with the requests of the Western powers in the face of extreme opposition from our own military. Deprived of these colonies, the options available to us for the relocation of our citizens have been severely limited. We do (pointedly) note that Britain and France, and, to a lesser extent, the United States, have not only retained their pre-war colonies, but have added significantly to them.

The refusal of Britain to renew the Anglo-Japanese Alliance, along with your own country's anti-Asiatic immigration laws, have exacerbated our problems. It has also served to promote a feeling among our people of "anti-Westernism", and their desire for the government to solve these problems by approaching the issues from a nationalistic, militaristic viewpoint. This is particularly the case with the Japanese military.

The reduction of the size of our naval fleet as a result of the Washington Conference has bred much ill feeling between the military and the government. This ill feeling, in fact, led to the assassination of Premier Hamaguchi. The reduction (to 60% of the size of the British and American fleets) came at a time when the Navy chiefs were planning to radically increase spending on our fleet.

You will agree that Japan has behaved admirably on the world stage. We have endeavoured to cater for our growing population by fostering friendly trade relationships with other nations. We have not attempted to take lands or markets by force. In the spirit of post-war peace, Japan has tried to solve her problems by the peaceful expansion of our commercial interests and relationships. It was not the intention of my government to intervene militarily in Manchuria, but circumstances have led to the Kwantung Army taking their own action.

This temporary occupation of Manchuria is vital for the stability of the region. With the threat of Communism to the north in Russia, and the rumblings of a serious Communist threat from within China itself, a Japanese presence in Manchuria will serve as a bulwark against the spread of a doctrine which would endanger not only Japan, but the colonial interests of many countries, including the United States.

Yours sincerely,

Wakatsuki Renjiro

A Specialist Study of the character of "Lyra" and how she develops in the novel "Northern Lights" by Philip Pullman.

Colin Campbell.

I have recently enjoyed studying a novel by Philip Pullman entitled "Northern Lights". I was particularly interested in the characterisation of the main character, Lyra, and how she develops throughout the course of the novel. I found her at first to be naive and headstrong, but as her character develops she learns more about how the world works. There is one thing in her, which I feel does not develop. This is her courage. I feel that she is consistently courageous to the extent of the plot.

When the reader is first introduced to Lyra, her background story is told.

Cheap University Papers on Northen Lights

"She (Lyra) was proud of her College's eminence, and liked to boast of it to the various ragamuffins she played with by the Canal or the Claybeds."

Jordan College adopted Lyra, when she was very young, as her mother and father had died. She likes to think of it as "her college" and is very proud of it. However, she is not educated at the college and therefore has a lot of spare time, which she uses to play with streetchildren. This shows her character to be of a young, naïve and mischievous nature.

"In many ways Lyra was a barbarian. What she liked best was clambering over the College roofs with Roger, the kitchen boy, who was her particular friend."

This backs up previous comments about her character's childishness and mischievous nature. It also elaborates on her exact friendships i.e. out of her many and "various" friends she has chosen one who is her "particular" friend. This quotation (and its context) also shows that she can form strong friendships. Another aspect of her character covered by this quotation is her apparent courage or perhaps lack of fear as she crawls around the high rooftops of the College. Either this or inversely she is just childlike and does not realise the possible consequences of her actions. Interesting vocabulary in this quotation includes "clambering" which suggest to me the impression of a child's un-deliberate movement, "particular friend" use of this suggests to me a possible foreshadow in the relationship between these two characters.

Further on in the text, Lyra runs away from a woman who has captured her and is on the street at night.

"Going to meet my father."

"And who's he?"

"He's a murderer."

"He's what?"

"I told you, he's a murderer. It's his profession. He's doing a job tonight. I got his clean clothes in here, 'cause he's usually all covered in blood when he's finished a job."

"Ah! You're joking."

"I en't…"

"Good night," she said. "I can see my father coming now. He looks a bit angry.

She runs into trouble in the form of a dodgy looking old man who is trying to encourage her to drink some of his brandy. She promptly lies and makes up a story about her father so that the old man leaves her alone. This shows that the man did not fool her and her character has grown from being naïve to being sensible and no longer childlike. It also displays her newfound talent for lying. In this quotation she is also using informal language, trying to fit in to her surroundings, another interesting character trait.

"You've done your part Lyra."

"But I e'nt done nothing yet!" Lyra protested, as she followed the others.

This quotation is taken from a part of the text where Lyra is joined with a people called "The Gyptians". She is convincing them to go North with her to try and find out where all the children have been taken and also where her Uncle Asriel is. The Gytians are trying to tell her that she should not come, as it would be too dangerous for her. However, she rebels and ends up forcing her way with them. This shows her stubbornness and again her apparent courage or lack of fear.

Near the climax of the story, Lyra is in sort of a prison camp for children in the Artic, but the government does not run it. Lyra is trying to find out who would run such an awful place, so she spies on a meeting from the air duct above the room.

"Lyra was trembling. The blood was pounding in her ears"

She is listening in on the conversation of the heads of the facility. She hears blood-curdling things of what they do to children. This shows that she has no lack of fear but that she can control her fear. She is courageous. She is heard in the air duct and captured by her enemy. This is the climax of the story when she promptly escapes from them again.

"A moment later she had turned on all the gas taps and flung a match at the nearest burner. Then she dragged a bag of flour from the shelf and hurled it at the edge of a table so it burst and filled the air with white, because she had heard that flour will explode if treated like that near a flame."

This is Lyra destroying a building as a distraction to escape from her enemy. It shows great creativity and a benefit of her "patchwork" upbringing. In this quotation I feel that the use of the word "white" is very skilled as it allows the reader to picture exactly what her actions are, at a part of the story where, I feel, things are moving so fast that it is hard to keep up.

From my study of the characterisation of Lyra, I have concluded that, throughout the course of this novel, she matures significantly as a person. Her initial character traits were naivet, being headstrong, being childlike and courage. These are now replaced (only courage is the same) by traits such as maturity, courage and sensibility. I think that the author has employed great skill and achieved a great goal in the creation of Lyra.

The Tale of the Wife of Bath's prologue is almost the main story. She is "warming up" the crowd for her actual tale when she tells them about her having multiple marriages. In the time which she lived having more than one marriage was unheard of; she seemed to prove that what she was doing was just and okay in the eyes of the Lord.

"Men can interpret and gloss the text up and down, but I surely without doubt that God expressly told us to increase and multiply; that pleasant text I can easily understand. I also know very well that He said my husband should leave his father and mother and live with me. But He made no mention of number, of bigamy, or of octogamy." (Chaucer, 15)

Not only did she justify that she may have more than one husband in her life, but that he must leave his family and join hers. She uses examples from the Bible as well to rationalize her point "I know very well that Abraham was a holy man, and Jacob also; and each of them had more than two wives, and many another holy man did, too." (Chaucer, 154) The Wife of Bath has now put the proof of the Bible on her side validating her rightness to marrying multiple times.

Virginity is the essence of a pure soul and that God himself was a virgin. Well the Wife of Bath states loud and clear and with no hesitation or sign of remorse that she is not perfect; therefore she leads her life being sexually active with her partner. "He (God) spoke to those who wish to live perfectly; and, ladies and gentlemen, by your leave, that's not me. I will bestow the flower of all my years on the acts and fruits of marriage." (Chaucer, 155) She continues with arguing what the sexual organs are for. There are two reasons, she explain, one is to urinate and the other is to conceive. Are they for having just to tell the gender of the person? She argues not "Tell me, also, why do we have organs of reproduction, and why were we created as we are? You can be sure they were not made for nothing." (Chaucer, 155)

Custom Essays on The Wife of Bath

This Wife of Bath seems very cocky and headstrong, having the nerve to say that she thinks of her lover as her slave. She mentions that she does not care sometimes of the feelings of her husband, only to act like a master and keep reeling in his love with the trap she has set. This Wife of Bath seems vicious in her feelings toward the men that she has vowed her love to; and I think that Chaucer is describing her like this to make her sound mean and like a slave trader. Not just does she say that her husband is her slave, but that she controls his body as well. He has no say over his own flesh because he wears a ring that binds him to the Wife of Bath.

"I don't deny that I will have my husband both my debtor and my slave; and as long as I am his wife he shall suffer in the flesh. I will have command over his body during all his life, not he. That's just the way the Apostle instructed me, and he told our husbands to love us well. I am completely in agreement with that opinion." (Chaucer, 156)

I have never read anything where a woman would say such a thing. I think Chaucer is describing her as a hard-core feminist and a merciless lover. As a woman I am upset that she would think this way about her man, this brings women to the level of the men that do this as well. If Chaucer is writing to make me dislike her, he is a successful writer.

"They had given me their land and treasures; there was no longer any need for me to be diligent or respectful to them to win their love. They loved me so well that before God I set no value on their affection. A wise woman will constantly busy herself to get a lover when she has none, but since I had them completely in my hand, and since they had given me all their property, what need was there for me to try to please them, unless for my own profit and pleasure?" (Chaucer, 157)

Is this woman even in this for love. No wonder she has failed five marriages and keeps going for more she squashes her men like flies once she has the security of their love locked in her hand. She claims that once they love her and give her anything that she should not waste her time returning the love. I do not see the justification in treatment like this to the opposite sex. This woman is an egotistical feminist and a conniving narcissist. How can these people listening to this not get up and leave or punch her in the face? Well I am really getting carried away… let me continue…

So this woman would control her husband and play "hard to get" so hard that it was impossible to get her; and in addition, she would nag and complain to these men if she saw them talking to another woman or doing something she does not approve of. As long as she drained the life from her husband, she considers herself "good to go (to the next.)" She even said that God had given women the right to do this to their men. "God has given a woman the instinctive ability to deceive, to weep, and spin as long as she lives. And so I can boast of one thing in the end I got the best of my husbands in every way, by tricks, by force, or by something else, such as constant complaining or grumbling." (Chaucer, 160)

In conclusion, Chaucer's opinion of the Wife of Bath, according to the way he wrote her prologue, was that she was indeed a self witch who was not playing the game for love. I could tell that Chaucer saw her as an insecure woman who had to pick off the ones who had seen a spark in her. The way she seemed to talk was as if she had already planned this conversation out in her dark room at home, bored with not doing anything at all because no one was around. Her tales could have been true, but Chaucer made her sound like a phony… at least he did to me.
