Introduction

Superstition is a belief or practice generally regarded as irrational and as resulting from ignorance or from fear of the unknown. It implies a belief in unseen and unknown forces that can be influenced by objects and rituals (Webster's Dictionary). Superstitions have a central role in Lives of the Saints, by causing conflicts between the Innocente family and the villagers of Valle Del Sole. Superstitions act as social control for the characters in the novel and often bring out the worst of everyone in the Valle Del Sole community.

Thesis

Superstitions function as a powerful control in the Lives of the Saints, by driving the plot, the settings and the conflicts in the novel.

Write my Essay on THE ROLE OF SUPERSTITIONS IN LIVES OF THE SAINTS

SUPERSTITIONS DRIVE THE PLOT

o "If this story has a beginning, a moment at which a single gesture broke the surface of events like a stone thrown into the sea, the ripples cresting away endlessly, then that beginning occurred on a hot July day in the year 160, in the village of Valle del Sole, when my mother was bitten by a snake." (Ricci 7)

Immediately when the novel begins, superstitions are introduced into the story. The superstition of snakes is used indirectly in the opening sentence of the first chapter, by referring to the beginning of the story as the incident when Vittorio's mother was bitten by a snake. This visibly shows that superstitions will be used throughout the plot.

o "'And what were you doing in the stable?' he said finally. 'Oh, Andò, basta!' my mother said. 'What does anyone do in the stable? I was feeding the pigs!' Now my grandfather, who seemed to have been paying much more attention to Di Lucci's driving than to this conversation, swivelled his head towards the back seat again. 'I thought you fed the animals this morning.' 'I was checking their water,' my mother said impatiently. She turned away towards her window. 'I didn't have time to fill the troughs this morning.' Bumbling Di Lucci, man of light. Did he know something of what had gone on in our stable, of those blue eyes that had swooped down on me? Or was he just following the villagers' instinct that beneath every simple event there lurked some dark scandal? At any rate, he succeeded now in causing a ripple to appear on the surface of my mother's calm; and if his small discovery made little difference in the long run, it gave him at least a claim to priority." (Ricci 1).

This quote talks about the trigger incident which caused the entire village of Valle del Sole to come to know about Cristina's affair. Because of Di Lucci's superstitions of snakes, his curiosity caught Cristina off guard and forced her to lie about her actions. Her father noticed that she had contradicted what she said in the morning, and thus questioned her actions. This caused Di Lucci to doubt her honesty, and assume that she was having an affair. Because the village was so small, news traveled fast and therefore, once Di Lucci discovered the scandal, all the villagers soon learned about it as well.

o "'Fools!' she shouted now. 'You tried to kill me but you see I'm still alive. And now you came to watch me hang, but I won't be hanged, not by your stupid rules and superstitions. You are the ones who are dead, not me, because none of you knows what it means to be free and to make a choice, and I pray to God that he wipes this town and all its stupidities off the face of the earth!'" (Ricci 184)

One of the main events in the plot occurs when Cristina fights against the villagers of Valle del Sole because she does not want to be insulted because of her different views on superstitions. She believes that the villagers are condemning her not only because of her actions, but also because they believe that her snake bite was a sign of God's punishment for her actions. She herself does not believe in the villagers' superstitions and leaves the city to separate herself from their small-minded personalities.

SUPERSTITIONS DRIVE THE SETTINGS

o "'I warn you, Cristí, you'll bring a curse on everyone around you. It's only for your father that people have kept quiet till now. But with the snake everyone has started to talk." (Ricci 57)

o "There were few who doubted that snakes, whatever their other properties, were agents of the evil eye, which the villagers feared far more than any mere Christian deity or devil, and which they guarded themselves against scrupulously, by wearing amulets of garlic of wolves' teeth and by posting goat horns above their doorways." (Ricci 11)

These quotes describe the type of superstitions that are held by the people of Valle del Sole. It shows that in the little Italian village setting, superstition controls the villagers, who fear and follow these beliefs more than their own Catholic faith. It is evident that superstitions play a major role in their social environment and manipulate the behaviour of the villagers towards the Innocente family.

o "'God will make his judgments,' said Giuseppina. 'It's for nothing she was bitten by a snake.'" (Ricci 51)

This is said by Giuseppina, one of Cristina's old friends, who believes that Cristina deserved to be bitten by a snake. In Valle del Sole, the snake symbolizes the devil and the villagers believe that wherever pride is, the snake will go. Because the villagers do not agree with Cristina's actions, they believe that God has punished her by allowing the 'devil' to bite her. This demonstrates that superstitions play an intertwined role with religion in the religious setting of the novel.

o "That beginning occurred on a hot July day in the year 160, in the village of Valle del Sole, when my mother was bitten by a snake." (Ricci 7)

In the very beginning of the novel, Vittorio introduces the geographical location and time period in which his story takes place. During the 160s, villages in Italy were very small and were comprise of only a few families. Because of the small amount of families, superstitions were very popular during this time and travelled quickly, especially in Italy. Therefore, superstitions are befitting of the physical settings and the time period of the novel.

SUPERSTITIONS DRIVE THE CONFLICTS

o "'Fools!' she shouted now.

Cristina says this when she leaves the village of Valle del Sole to end her conflict with society. Her disbelief of superstitions creates a rift between her and the villagers, thus making her declare that she will no longer be hanged by the villagers' superstitions leaves the village of Valle del Sole.

o "But my head started pounding then and suddenly I couldn't bear Fabrizio anymore and his stupid grinning. I wanted to make him stop talking, make him disappear, and I picked up a rock beside my foot and flung it squarely at his chest. He deflected the rock with an arm but I threw myself on him, arms flailing, and the two of us fell to the ground, Fabrizio holding out his elbows to ward me off. 'Oh, scimunit', have you gone crazy?' 'It was the snake's fault, you stupid! You're just a stupid like your stupid father!' 'Sí, sí, stop, it was only the snake, you're right, it was only the snake.'" (Ricci 104)

In this incident, Vittorio is conflicting internally, even though he is actually fighting with his best friend, Fabrizio. Once confronted by the truth about his mother, he goes into denial about her actions and places the blame on the snake that bit her. He uses the superstition to cover up his mother's mistakes, and convinces himself that everyone is disrespectful towards his mother because of her incident in the barn.

o "'They say that if a woman goes with another man and gets bitten by a snake, then the next baby she has will have the head of a snake. And then the only thing you can do'he made a sudden jabbing motion with a clenched fist, and I started back'is to kill the baby the minute it's born, and cut out its eyes, so the evil eye won't follow you.'" (Ricci 14)

This scene leads to the conflict between Vittorio and Alredo's gang, in the mountain. Alfredo, Vittorio's enemy, provokes him by using village superstitions to scare him about his mother's pregnancy. The children make him uncomfortable by telling him how to kill a snake baby and how to get rid of the evil eye, thus making him want to run away in fear.

Conclusion

Superstitions function as a powerful control in the Lives of the Saints, by driving the plot, the settings and the conflicts in the novel. Superstitions have a major effect on how people act in today's society, regardless of the time period we live in. It is unfortunate to see a family ruined by superstitions and to be condemned for their own beliefs of freedom and individuality. Luckily, in Canada, people are free to believe in whatever superstitions they please, and are not judged by their beliefs or actions.

Discussion Questions

1. How do you feel about the way the villagers of Valle del Sole used their superstitions to turn against the Innocente family? Why?

. Why do you think Cristina did not believe in the same superstitions that the villagers did?

. Do you think that the snake was a contributing factor for Cristina's father's behaviour towards Cristina? Why or why not?

4. What are some basic superstitions that you've heard of in the past?

5. Does your family have any superstitions that are specific to their cultural background? If so, please state.

It's been said by many that education is the key to ones life. It opens doors for the future, so that you're not working at a Jack in the Box or Quiznos. An education will get you a job in mostly anything you want to be. Some go to school to become a doctor, lawyer, business man, nurse, scientist, or anything they wish to do. Who tells you all of this; your parents, grandparents, family and even friends. It's great to know that you have someone to encourage you to go to school.

But what if people don't end up going to school? Some become bums, living on the streets, asking for a quarter. Its tough to say no, but you do it anyways. Others are just not meant for school, it's not their thing. And its all fine by me, they'll just end up working somewhere I wouldn't.

For many others, work or school just doesn't fit in their description. Some are drug pushers, car jackers, and even murderers. Where do these people end up? In prison of course. It's funny too, because people like, even love going to prison. Its home away from home.

Write my Essay on Education vs. Incarceration

Let's take Pablo Escobar, the notorious drug lord from Columbia. He didn't mind one bit going to jail. Every time he went in, was like checking in to a hotel suit. Escobar had it all. From television sets, pool tables, full bar with all the alcohol he could drink, along with all of his friends. He even had professional stripers and prostitutes come into his prison cell to please him. How and why? This man was loaded with cash. He paid for everything at his correctional facility.

For Mexico, it's a whole different ball park. We are talking about dog kettles here. People live like sardines in a can, which can never come out. I would rather live on the streets as a bum then go to prison in Mexico. Believe me, it's that bad. First off, of course is getting caught doing anything by the cops. They will kick your ass if you don't cooperate, take your money and leave you on the streets. If you are cool with them, you might be able to bribe them in exchange for cash. I would say at least $100.00. If none of the above work, you go straight to jail. So you end up in a federal prison with the start of a cold shower. Afterwards, guards will greet you with your pair of shorts and sandals to dress in, no warm jumpsuit for you here. The cops then walk you to your cell with about 50 to 100 people waiting anxiously to greet you there. Throw you in and the rest is up to your cell mates, if that's what you want to call them.

Guards aren't paid well in Mexico, which is why the country is so corrupted. That is why most of the time you can bribe a cop or guard on the streets. The next time you go down south, and feel like you might get in trouble with the law, take lots of cash.

But Mexico isn't the only country with a messed up correctional system. Georgia, which was once a part of the Soviet Union, is as bad, maybe even worse. The guards at a prison get paid a horrible 70 laris (5 U.S. dollars). That would only be enough for a months rent and just enough food for himself. Try and raise a family off that salary.

The daily food allowance for a Georgia prisoner is, get this, 80 tetris (40 cents). What can they possibly eat with 40 cents, bread and water? As for health care, they get 50 tetris (5 cents) a day.

Not only is this place low budget, but corrupted as well. I read that prisoners have to take turns in order to sleep well. This is because the jail cells are so small, it's only big enough for one prisoner to sleep. There have been reports of empty jail cells that are sold to prisoners if the price is right. Just talk to the warden and its like if you were upgrading to a hotel suit.

The government in both of these countries does nothing to prevent such low budget costs and corruption, which is good in my opinion. Both Mexico and Georgia run their prison systems great. This is they way prisoners in the United States should be treated. Prisoners in the US live like kings compared to others, which is why so many love going back to prison.

In a study from April 6, 18, the governor of New York, George Pataki had voted for a veto of 500 million dollars for the construction of schools. That's enough money to build at least 5-7 good size schools. Pataki also cut the budget of 77 million dollars to go towards teachers. There goes a bunch of more teaches. All this money could have gone to our schools to teach or so called "Future of America".

Not only did Pataki cut money from the public school system, but from universities and state colleges as well. It was said 8.8 million dollars were cut from teachers salaries at SNYU's (State University of New York), and another 1.5 million from a program that could have helped thousands of students with 65.00 each in book aids. That could have covered the cost half, maybe even whole cost of a book.

To this date, New York has spent more than twice the amount to run a prison than in 188. As the NYU's go down by %, prisons go up by a whooping 76 %. One more thing to add, the department of corrections received 761 million dollars to renovate their lovely prison. As for the children, they once again get dissed, and get the less 615 million.

I have always been told that our mistakes develop our character, that we are educated in life's lessons as we learn for ourselves the do's and don'ts of life. 'Mistakes are good for you as long as you learn from them,' Dad would always say to me. Well I tend to repeat my mistakes so often that they border on becoming habits. My life would be so much easier if I could learn from my mistakes the first time I make them.

For instance one particularly memorable morning of mine I woke up at my boyfriends house with no memory of how I got there. After a while it came back to me. There had been a promotion at work. A party. My boyfriend and tequila shots. All my friends were there. After one shot I started to feel so good and relaxed. Just a couple more drinks. The next thing I knew I was doing a shot with anyone I could find. Then there I was dancing, throwing my arms around and twirling and twisting in a drunken imitation of MTV music videos. I remember my boyfriend and I arriving at his house after the party. He was asking me to get out of the truck. I was sitting there wondering how I would get out without using my legs. I was in a deep contemplation about why I could not move my arms or legs. I felt so content to just sit there in a drunken stupor.

I should have learned that I could not hold my alcohol the first time I woke up in a strange place. Every time it happened I would promise myself never to do it again. I should have learned self control. But I had to make this mistake many other times before my education in this subject was complete. How much time would I have saved if I had learned from my mistake the first time I made it?

Another mistake I should have learned from is lying. In this instance I was invited over to the home of an acquaintance for dinner. Lisa was an older woman my mothers age

whom I had lived with for a year or so when I first moved to Las Vegas. I was now living on my own and rarely saw her. I ate with her once a week, saturday night, because I was obligated to continue my relationship with her. Well one week I really didn't want to go. I wanted a night to my self, didn't want to deal with all the boring small talk and politeness. So I told her that I couldn't come because my mothers birthday was that night (which it was) and that my family was having a party for her (which it wasn't). I figured that there was no way that she would find out because she doesn't talk to my family. So I made my excuses with her and she was disappointed but fine with it because after all family is important.

I thought I had gotten away with it until the next week when I came over she was asking me all sorts of questions about the party. Who was there, what did we do, was it fun? I had a gut felling that she knew I had lied. I just knew she knew. I spent the night racking my brain trying to figure out how she could have found out. After a while it came to me that she went to church with my sister Retta. So I called Retta and asked her if she had talked to Lisa that sunday. As it turns out she had talked to her. Lisa had asked her how that party for our mother went and Retta had told her that here had been no party. So I had to call Lisa and apologize to her. She was not upset at all she understood I need some nights to do my own thing.

I was so embarrassed at being caught in a lie. The next time I saw her I couldn't even look her in the eye. The bad thing was that I knew that I was old enough to know better. I spent my childhood learning not to lie. I need to learn from my mistakes the first time around. If I did my life would be so much simpler and easier.

Arts Funding

We, the Michigan Youth Caucus, believe that a well-rounded education should stress not only core classes such as English, Mathematics, Social Studies, and Science, but should also include Arts.

We, Michigan Youth Caucus, believe that schools are failing their students and their communities by not placing enough emphasis on educating our children in artistic fields, such as music, drawing, theater, etc. As a result, there is a lagging interest in arts, and schools have withheld funding, citing lack of interest.

We, the Michigan Youth Caucus, feel that adding arts to the core curriculum would be of great benefit to society, giving students access to a wider selection of careers. Recent studies have shown that children involved in arts have higher spatial intelligences than those not involved in arts. Further studies have shown links between spatial intelligence and mathematics, showing that those who have taken art classes do better on spatial intelligence problems.

We, the Michigan Youth Caucus, see the need to allow for additional funding for these programs. This funding, coming from Federal Government grants and donations from both private citizens and corporations, will be used to encourage students to continue their artistic endeavors, as well as to promote more students to seek artistic career pathways.

In addition to the increased funding, students will be required to successfully complete a minimum of two () years of instruction in their choice of art medium, whether it be music, drawing, painting, theater, or any other artistic program the school has to offer.
