Medieval times was a very dangerous time period. The medieval period lasted from about 400AD to about 1500 AD. This time was very different than from the way life is now. Medieval Europe was a very dangerous time period. Government, the public, and the warfare were all different. If someone were to go back to 100 AD in France, they would find themselves in a very difficult situation. The style of life was called feudalism.

In feudalism, no one actually owned land. The king owned the land as a "trust from God," and then gave it away to others. The first people the king would pass land to were the nobles, and from them it was passed to the lower ranks of the people. The people who held these lands had to pay fees or rents, called fiefs. (Barber, 7)

In the feudalist system, vassals were below the lords. When a vassal met a lord, they had to give the lord their sword and then say a prayer to the lord. The lord would then kiss the vassal and return the sword to him. Occasionally, if the lord liked the vassal, he would give him a plot of land, called a seizin. In order to pay for this land, the vassal had to offer military service. He had to appear in the battlefield, fully armed, and have a few men to fight with him. He generally had to serve for 40 days in war, or as a guard in the lords castle. Also, he had to appear in the lord's court, and give advice or act as a juror. The vassal was expected to defend his lord to the death, and even give up his horse if the lord was to lose his. Being a vassal was a very honorable position. (Barber, 7)

Lords often had special benefits. Lords were entitled to aids or money payments on occasions, such as the knighting of his son, or the marriage of his daughter. The lord was obliged to protect and defend his vassals. He could also act as guardian of the heir to the fief if he was old enough. When comparing vassals and lords, duties and rights were thought of as going up the ladder, although there were bad lords who did not treat their vassals right, and vassals who failed their lords.

Help with essay on Medieval Times

This system could get very confusing, because the web of oaths between the lords and the vassals got very developed, so their were rules. A vassal could serve up to four different lords, with all sorts of reservations to the different lords. Even a king could be a vassal to a lord, because kings had often been feudal lords themselves. (Artz, 6)

There were men known as great noblemen in feudal times. This type of man was all powerful in his own lands. He had the right to all justice, high, middle, and low, which meant that he had the power of life and death over everyone in his territory. Not even a king could interfere with these men. He could do such things as lower or raise taxes and tolls, control fairs and markets, coin his own money, and give charters for the founding of new towns. These towns often had to pay their taxes in money, and sometimes even had to pay for the making of soldiers. This way, they would meet the obligations of the feudal world. (Artz, 75)

Below these noblemen were a lower class of noblemen, the knights and squires, and they had much less authority. They only had the right to low justice. Such things included being able to hang a robber caught in the act on his own hands. He could also levy a few taxes from his tenants. There was also a mill and an oven that he owned, which his villagers were bound to use.

Not all land was held in exchange for feudal services. The church often held lands in exchange for money payments or free gifts. Occasionally the king was the overlord, and the money that was paid went to him. The land that people owned could not be dealt with however the holder wanted. They could only use it. If the holder failed in this, the lord could take his land away and give it someone else. (Barber, 5)

At the bottom of the feudal pyramid was the peasant farmer. Some were slaves, bound to land and considered property, like cows or sheep, and some were free, and they held land like everyone else except they paid their service by doing work on the land. They divided this work between their own fields and the lords fields. Peasants in good shape would hire laborers to do the work in the lord's fields. For the fief, the land was inherited by the eldest son. It was held in exchange for money, labor, or farm produce. Sometimes, villagers had to provide armed men, archers, or pikemen to follow their lord to war. (Artz, 78)

The relationship between nobles who owned fiefs was equal, because the nobles themselves were equal. Knights who owned a small manor were generally equal to counts who they dealt with, because they both wore belts, spurs, and a sword, which made them members of the same club. The relationship between a lord and his tenants was like that of a father and a family, so the members looked up to the lord in a way.

War in medieval times was very different from war nowadays. War revolved around castles. Enemy castles were major military and political objectives. Many castles were actually sited specifically to bar invasion routes. Normally, castles stood on high ground commanding a river crossing, a river confluence, a stretch of navigation, a mountain pass, or some other important feature. A castle located inside a city could still defend itself even if the whole city had been taken over. Even a rural castle could not be safely bypassed, because its garrison could cut the invaders supply lines. The mobility of the garrison had many purposes, such as raiding across a border, furnishing a supply base for an army on the offensive, or interrupting road or river traffic at a distance. For these reasons, military science of the middle ages was dedicated to the science of the attack and defense of the castles. (Artz, 8)

A castle's main line of resistance was the curtain wall with its projection towers. It was very difficult to make it past these, since lines of men could be put up there. Defenses on the weaker sides often multiplied. However, no defense fortification was strong against all attack. Even the strongest castles of the 1th and 1th centuries were captured. The castle had very few weak spots, and these spots were bombarded by the enemy. A common weakness of castles was the subsoil. Unless a castle was founded on rock, one could get into the castle by digging underground. The procedure was to drive a tunnel beneath the wall, normally a corner or tower. When a certain point was reached, the timbers were set on fire. If a castle was built on stone and could not be dug under, other devices had to be used for attack. Two such devices were the mobile assault tower and the siege artillery. The mobile assault tower was called a cat, and its components were brought to the war site. Its aim was to provide power with cover and height, while taking away the advantages of the defenders. They also used catapults, which could fire 50 pound rocks over 00 yards. From this the trebuchet was developed, which had better accuracy and more power than anything else. They fired flammables sometimes too because the timbers were wood and would catch on fire. The effectiveness of these machines depended on the thickness of the wall. Eventually, the defenders caught on and started to build thicker walls. Defenders also used artillery to attack the attackers. (Barber, 48)

Medieval times was an interesting period to live in. Its customs, methods, and styles made it one of the most different time periods in history. War, lifestyle, and government were all very different in the middle ages than it is now, and it is because of this that the medieval time period is an astonishing period to study.

Mark Twains Adventures Of Huckleberry Finn is an adventurous story of a young boy (Huck) who orphans himself from the average young mans life. This young man slips from the clutches of his drunken father and sets out for adventures of his own. In doing so, he meets with a fugitive slave named Jim. Traveling mostly at night, Huck and Jim float down the Mississippi River on a raft, while building a friendship. They travel at night trying to avoid trouble and being caught. As their luck would have it, trouble in the way of additional passengers, found them.

The stories central focus is on the mischievous life of this boy after his run-away. The number of his adventures, lies and deceptions are too vast to tell, but would have to be found out by oneself. This young man did not set out to harm anyone, but rather just didnt seem able to tell the truth. One might be able to see Huck as a Dennis-the-mennis, of steam-boat days. The adventures of this young man will keep you wanting to find out what he does next!

This book was well written in the sense that you could visualize the settings and almost hear the dialogs. The speech used however may slow your reading down a little in attempt to understand Jims lingo.

Although (because of Jims dialog) I found some portions of this book hard to read and comprehend, I found the adventures to be riveting. I highly recommend this book. Readers who love adventure should put this book on their must read list.

The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, by Mark Twain, was one of the best novels I have ever read. When I was a junior in high school, I had to get signed permission to read this novel. I never thought a book could be so controversial that something like that would be necessary. I am so glad that I read it then, and again during my freshman year of college, because I think it sends a powerful message. Written in the dialect of the deep south, Twain successfully gets the reader involved in the book. When I read this novel for the first time, I did not want to put it down. The character of Huck intrigued me. Though a young boy, he had more common sense than many people years older than him. He knew what he wanted and was smart enough to know how to go about getting it. When he befriends a runaway slave named Jim, social issues are brought up and Huck is forced to follow what his heart says, instead of what society says is morally acceptable. I enjoyed how Twain portrayed Huck and Jims journey down the river and the adventures they shared. It was a symbol of their need for freedom. By sharing the same goals, Huck and Jim become true friends. They are beyond the color barrier and realize that a person is a person, regardless of what they look like or who they are. I think much of todays society could benefit from reading this book. It helps you put things in perspective and think about what is really important in life; what others think versus how you feel. If anyone is looking for a good novel to read, one that captures interest and provokes thought, Twains The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn is it.

Monetary policy is the manipulation of interest rates to influence economic activity, whilst fiscal policy is the use of the government budget (variations in the level and composition of taxation and spending) to influence the economy. Both these instruments have a role to play in the Federal Government's policy mix to achieve key economic objectives. Historically, these objectives have been 'internal balance' (achieving price stability and low unemployment), 'external balance' (keeping the CAD, foreign liabilities and exchange rates at a sustainable level), and economic growth to improve the material standard of living in the medium to long term. Along with microeconomic reform, fiscal and monetary policy are the three instruments used to meet these objectives.

The traditional policy mix (used since the Hawke/Keating Labor government) has been to use monetary policy to address internal balance, fiscal policy to achieve external balance, and microeconomic reform to assist in achieving faster rates of sustainable growth. However, the policy mix has changed slightly under the new Howard government, especially in the role played by fiscal policy. Monetary policy remains the most important economic management tool, and since the early 10s has played the central role in the management of economic growth and inflation in Australia. For the past decade the RBA has conducted monetary policy with the main aim of achieving its 'inflation target' of - per cent over the course of the economic cycle. Whilst low inflation is not an end in itself, the RBA believes that keeping price growth within the target range is the key to achieving the goals of sustainable economic growth and low unemployment. Under the Howard government however, fiscal policy has taken on a less active economic role. Fiscal policy is no longer actively used to influence the level of economic growth nor to achieve external balance. In fact, the objective of external balance is no longer directly pursued by the current government. Instead, fiscal policy is a supplementary demand management tool, with the main aim being to achieve budget balance over the course of the economic cycle. This goal of fiscal balance ensures that the government does not draw from the savings pool and 'crowd out' the private sector (thereby indirectly assisting external stability), as well as having other political advantages.

The RBA needs to take many factors into account when conducting monetary policy. Theoretically, interest rates are raised to exert contractionary pressure on an overheated economy, and lowered to promote growth when economic activity is stagnant. Whilst MP is relatively quick to implement (the RBA Board convenes every month), changes to interest rates often take 1 18 months to have an impact on the economy. This time lag needs to be taken into account when conducting MP, and the RBA often needs to act preemptively and forecast where the economy will be positioned in the business cycle when the impact of MP changes are seen. At present the RBA has kept interest rates steady at 4.75 per cent for more than a year, yet many economists are forecasting that rates will fall in the second half of 00. According to the RBA formula, when inflation is within the target band, then an interest rate level below 5.5% is considered expansionary. Therefore, the current interest rate should be having a mildly stimulatory effect on economic activity, supporting the fact that Australia's current growth rate (.% in March 0) is below the long term sustainable rate of .5 to 4 per cent. The RBA also did not react to the fact that for a brief period in early 00 inflation rose outside of its target band to .4 per cent in March. This reflects the fact that the inflation target is not an 'electric fence', but rather a goal to be achieved as an average over the course of the business cycle. This frees up monetary policy to be used for demand management in the short term.

There is increasing pressure on the RBA to ease monetary policy through an interest rate cut due to the less than promising outlook for the world economy. In addition, the domestic growth rate is well below its sustainable average, still suffering from the effects of the drought. Also, by reducing the interest rate differential between ourselves and the rest of the world (current interest rates are only 1% in the US and 0% in Japan), this would reduce upward pressure on the Australian dollar and lessen the negative impact of the weak global economy on our export markets. However, the RBA has also expressed its concern about the continuing boom in home building and property prices, being fuelled by a growth in credit. This reflects the fact that monetary policy is a relatively blunt economic instrument. A change in interest rate has an effect on every aspect of the economy, making it difficult for the RBA to move rates in either direction. Ideally, monetary policy should be used hand-in-hand with fiscal policy to achieve economic objectives, as FP can be more highly targeted to specific areas in the economy. For example, expansionary fiscal policy could be used to address the current situation of slow economic growth, whilst leaving interest rates steady as not to over-stimulate the property market. However, the fact that the government no longer uses fiscal policy as a serious macro-economic instrument means that this would be difficult to achieve. In reality, the Budget is now used mostly as a political instrument due to the public misconception that balanced budgets are a reflection of sound economic management. Balanced budgets also prevent the political opposition from being able to use any surplus funds should they come to power. It seems that the Government's political agenda has rendered fiscal policy close to impotent in terms of its macroeconomic impact in the economy.

Buy cheap The role of monetary and fiscal policy in the policy mix term paper

In 00, fiscal policy will exert a very mildly expansionary pressure on the economy, even though macroeconomic concerns no longer feature highly in the fiscal strategy. The underlying cash surplus has shrunk form 0.5 per cent to 0. per cent of GDP (from $. bn to $. bn). The budget contains income tax cuts and overall spending increases which are likely to provide some stimulus for the Australian economy in the face of a relatively weak global environment. However, the fiscal loosening is slight enough that it will not put undue pressure on inflation or the Current Account. The government attempts to ensure that it is not 'living beyond its means'. Fiscal policy attempts to maintain macroeconomic stability and encourage private investment through the entrenchment of low levels of public debt, meaning that the Current Account is simply a reflection of private saving and investment decisions. This is in line with the Twin Deficits theory which states that the government should attempt to avoid fiscal deficits which put pressure on the national savings pool and can crowd out private investment.

All these fiscal policy objectives are supplementary to the role of monetary policy, which is the primary tool for macroeconomic management in the Government's policy mix. Whilst fiscal policy still has some role to play in the economy, the fact that the government also uses it to achieve political objectives means that the present policy mix is unable to deal with the current economic conditions in the most effective way.

Technology is making thieves out of good honest men (or women). How so? First, by allowing consumers to copy music to cassettes, to burn music on CDs and now through Peer-to-Peer Music Trading (downloadable music from internet). Many music listeners do not think that copying music is a crime, but music label moguls see it differently. The truth of the matter is that it's true. Copying music is stealing one's intellectual property and/or copyright holdings. Now technology has taken it to a different level. Music listeners can now download music from the Internet. As a result, Peer-to-Peer Music Trading is causing the record companies to face a major business problem in sales. Marketing Professor Peter Fader believes, while music listeners are getting music for free, music businesses are getting free publicity.

Peer-to-Peer Music Trading has become a major problem for the music business. But there has been an investigation that reveals differently. Peter Fader who wrote a paper entitled, " Using Advance Purchase Orders to Forecast New Product Sales," also wrote an article, "Peer-to-Pear Music Trading Good Publicity or Bad Precedent?" In his findings, he predicts that this type of trading would generate more publicity, which would generate sells. Record companies disagree with his statement. Fader says, ["Music downloading is a form of advertising"and that music companies should shift from making an album just a 'collection of songs' into making it a gateway to a complex, multi-layered entertainment experience."] http//knowledge.Wharton.upenn.edu/articles

While conducting this research, Fader used Greenfield, an Internet based marketing research company to design and implement his survey. Greenfield's received respondents through their Quick Take survey on digital music downloading. Greenfield also included conversations with academic colleagues, market research professionals from competing firms, viewed other citations and reports. Standard stratification techniques and randomly selected individuals demographically, along with the dimensions of age, gender and income were also used. Greenfield relied on benchmarking data from Forrester Research to choose an Internet-representative sample from its panel. 5,000 individuals that were representatives of U.S. Internet users took the survey. Gartners G's also had interesting findings. ["The spate of controversial music-business researchfrom Gartners G's report on online music service PressPlay .0 ("the most significant development in digital music in two years) to the usual harangue from the Recording Industry Association of America (sue the Internet!) reached its zenith last month with Forrester Research's "Downloads Save the Music Business," which predicts that downloads will generate $.1 billion for labels by 007] http//www.fortune.com/

The downside of Peer-to-Peer Music Trading has been scrutinized closely. According to the Recording Industry of America Association, albums sales have gone down to 10.% to 7% within the past two years. And in their findings through Webnoize, pirates downloaded .05 billion files a month from the top four sites in 001. Stanley Liebowitz, an intellectual-property expert stated that ["As it gets easier to burn a CD, you could see more of a negative impact on sales."] http//www.fortune.com. The Recording Industry Association of America study showed that by more than two to one consumers who are downloading are buying less; which proves why the 7.% drop in CD sales has occurred. According to Forrester Research, music downloads actually saves the music business. [Forrester found that even hard-core digital music down-loaders only plan to reduce their CD purchases by % in the next 1 months, and that the larger digital-dilettante sectors actually plan to increase CD purchasing] http//knowledge.Wharton.upenn.edu/articles.cfm?catid=4&articleid=65

So why are the sales going down. Forrester Research blames it on the recession.

It is true that Peer-to-Peer Music Trading has generated a buzz in the music business. The music file sharing software provider, such as, Napster, has generated a great number of young fans and powerful opposition in the recording and entertainment industry. Although,

Billions of shared computer files has passed through Napster, but did so at the expense of copyright holders.

I agree with Peter Fader when he states that music companies can make serious money online, by charging a monthly flat fee to have access to music and other benefits. As a writer, I would have to disagree, because the market cannot operate efficiently and rightfully to make music available to the music listener. This is where Congress would have to step in and determine how copyright law should serve the consumer's interest in the Digital Age.

Please note that this sample paper on Music Trading is for your review only. Abstract

In this paper, I will discuss the claims process through the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission, and the civil litigation process from the state level through the Supreme Court. In researching these topics, I gathered information from the Internet.

The claims process through the (EEOC) and the civil litigation process from the state level through the Supreme Court

There is a process in which to remedy discrimination against an employee. I will discuss the practices that need to be followed in order to file a formal complaint with the EEOC. I will also talk about the civil litigation process from the state level through the Supreme Court. I researched these topics at length on the Internet, and have found that there are many different steps that need to be taken in order to come to resolution of a complaint.

Cheap custom writing service can write essays on The claims process through the (EEOC) and the civil litigation process from the state level through the Supreme Court

Method

I researched this topic in a variety of different ways. I read the textbook assigned to this class as well as searching the Internet for any relevant information.

A person who feels that they have been discriminated against must first contact an EEO counselor. This must be done within 45 days of the incident and prior to filing a formal complaint. The counselor will sit down with them and disclose all of their rights in writing. The counselor will explain the procedures that need to be followed when filing a complaint, the time frames that need to be adhered to, and attempt to help resolve the problem informally. This counseling must take place within 0 days of the date that the EEO office was contacted and

counseling was requested. An additional 60-day extension is allowable upon meeting certain criteria. If the issue has not been resolved at the end of the time period, a "Notice of Final Interview" will be sent to the aggrieved party. This "notice" advises them that they have 15 days to file a complaint. Once a formal complaint is filed, the agency has 180 days to investigate the complaint. The agency will then provide the complainant with a copy of their investigative file. The complainant then has 0 days to request a hearing and a decision from an EEOC AJ. Once a request for a hearing has been received and the complaint file has arrived, the AJ must conduct the hearing within 180 days. Once a decision has been made, the AJ must issue a final order within 40 days. Each complainant has the right to appeal the final order. When filing an appeal, "The EEOCs decision will be based on a preponderance of the evidence. The decision will also inform the complainant of his or her right to file a civil action." The U.S. Equal Opportunity Employment Opportunity Commission's website (http//eeoc.gov/federal/fedprocess.html). At this point a civil action may be filed.

When filing a civil action, there are certain steps you need to take. If your claim is for $000.00 or less, you make take your case to small claims court. If it is for over $000.00, the first step that needs to be taken in any action is to consult a lawyer who will advise you of the merits of your claim, and any potential outcome. Your lawyer will also assist you in making sure that you are aware of all limitation dates. At this point a statement of claim needs to be prepared. This

statement will outline your position and make a claim for either a liquidated or unliquidated amount of damages. The court will issue this statement and the original copy is served on the Defendant. Once proof of service has been received, the person served has 10 days in which to file a defense to the action. This defense must be filed with the court, and a copy sent to the plaintiff's lawyer. If this is not done within the time period allotted, the plaintiff has the right to apply to the court for a default judgement. If the defense needs more time to prepare the action, the plaintiff's lawyer can grant a reasonable extension. This is a common practice as 10 days is not enough time to advise a client, and prepare a proper defense. Once the defense has been received both sides start the information gathering process. They will review documents, and interview people and prepare a "book of documents". This book has to be served upon the defendant's lawyer, and a list of the documents must be filed with the court. Once the defendant's lawyer receives this book, he has 10 days in which to produce the "defendants book of documents". As with the defense, the plaintiff's lawyer may grant an extension. Once the document disclosure has been accomplished, the discovery phase takes place. This is where both sides "discover" each other's witnesses. They interview some or all of the witnesses under oath, and this interview is recorded, and may be used in court later. The interview has to take place when both lawyers can be present, and the witness has the amount of time available that the lawyer needs. Once all the documents have been exchanged, and the discoveries are completed, both sides need to submit to the court a "Certificate of Readiness for Trial". This tells the court

whether or not both sides feel that it would be beneficial to have a settlement conference before the judge. If they feel that it would be beneficial, a date is set and both lawyers must be available for that whole day. Each lawyer has to prepare a "Settlement Conference Brief", and this has to be submitted to the court before the conference date. Each side will present the case that they must meet. This is done informally, and no witnesses are called. The clients may or may not be present. At the settlement conference, the judge will attempt to facilitate between the two parties. If no resolution can be reached, the judge will make a non-binding judgement. The parties can choose to accept it or continue to trial. A different judge who has no knowledge of the outcome of the settlement conference will hear the trial. Once it has been determined that a case must go to trial, a pre-trial conference date is set. On that date both lawyers meet briefly with another judge so that the judge can determine that both parties agree upon the issues for trial, all preliminary matters have been dealt with, and that both parties are ready to proceed to trial. At this time a trial date is set, and the lawyers work to prepare all witnesses for trial and gather all other documentation needed. At the end of the trial, the judge reserves the right to go back over all the evidence presented, and will not necessarily make a judgement immediately.

The civil litigation road is a long one. Although the process is very orderly, and the steps are logical, they are all very time consuming. To resolve a civil litigation case successfully, you must have a good understanding of the process, and be able to use it effectively.

Since rap music hit the mainstream, white America has criticized it for its violent, sexual lyrics that seem to encourage teenagers to follow suit. Eminem is one of the most persecuted and misunderstood rappers still producing. "Sing for the Moment" by Eminem captures rap culture by explaining why and how teens relate to the lyrics, by describing why artists continue to write and sing, and by refuting middle class criticisms of rap and rock.

After becoming one of the most popular rappers, many listeners, especially teenage boys have deeply identified with Eminem's descriptions of anger, loneliness, and inspiration. For example, in "Sing for the Moment", he says "they sit and they cry at night, wishing they'd die till they throw on a rap record…" He knows that he is affecting and ultimately helping many people who would otherwise feel hopeless. He also understands that music, rap, can be an inspiration and a release for many. Eminem will continue to try to "size the moment" and understand himself and the world through his lyrics and music.

In "Sing for the Moment", he explains why popular rappers continue to produce even though they suffer harsh criticism.

For example, he points out parents and officials believe he is responsible for acts of violence done by others. His opinion is that music or words cannot force someone to act out. Furthermore, he suggests that American society is filled with negligent parents and hypocritical government officials. Teens turn to violence and drugs because the world they live in is devoid of love and stability, not because the music they listen to depicts anger and a culture of poverty.

Invisible Man was heavily influenced by the work of a number of twentieth-century French writers known as the existentialists. Existentialism, whose foremost proponents included Albert Camus and Jean-Paul Sartre, explored the question of individuality and the nature of meaning in a seemingly meaningless universe. Ellison adapted the existentialists universal themes to the black experience of oppression and prejudice in America.

I use Ralph Ellisons Invisible Man to consider the requirements of existentialism to be relevant to racialized experience. Black existentialism is distinguished from white existentialism by its focus on anti-black racism. However, black existentialism is similar to white existentialism in its moral requirement that agents take responsibility so as to be in good faith. Ralph Ellisons invisible man displays good faith at the end of the novel by assuming responsibility for his particular situation. The idiosyncratic development of the novel can be interpreted as an example of the ways in which existentialist values ought to be instantiated through unique individual experience. However, blackness, or any racial identity, is not itself an existential structure because it is not universal. Rather, existentialist requirements for good faith can be applied to racialized situations by both whites and blacks.

I looked at Ras on his horse and at their handful of guns and recognized the absurdity of the whole night and of the simple yet confoundingly complex arrangement of hope and desire, fear and hate, that had brought me here still running, and knowing now who I was and where I was and knowing too that I had no longer to run for or from the Jacks and the Emersons and the Bledsoes and Nortons, but only from their confusion, impatience, and refusal to recognize the beautiful absurdity of their American identity and mine…. And I knew that it was better to live out ones own absurdity than to die for that of others, whether for Rass or Jacks.

The narrator experiences this moment of epiphany during his confrontation with Ras in Chapter Twenty-Five. This scene represents a key moment in the narrators existential breakthrough, as he realizes that his own identity is the source of meaning in his life and that acting to fulfill the expectations of others can only prove destructive. Rass threatening to kill the narrator makes the narrator see the world as meaningless and absurd and the complexity of American life as equally absurd. (Ellison borrows the word absurd directly from the work of the French existentialists, who characterized the universe as such and claimed that the only meaning to be found in existence is that with which the individual invests his own life.) The only motivation to which the narrator can cling is an affirmation that his own absurdity is more important to him than Jacks or Rass. The action of hurling Rass spear back at him demonstrates the narrators refusal to be subject any longer to others visions and demandshe finally commits himself fully to an attempt to assert his true identity.
