Short Term 1

Short Term Memory

Memory is something I have always wondered about. Im going to explain a little bit about short term memory. Short Term Memory refers to a process that can hold a limited amount of information, an average of seven items for only a short period of time. The memory can last - 0 seconds in your head before you forget or it disappears. It will not disappear if you transfer it to the permanent storage called the long term memory. You must pay attention to the object or information , if not then it will be lost. Maintenance rehearsal is a key to keeping the information inside the memory. Maintenance rehearsal is the practice of repeating or rehearsing information for it to stay longer. This can also increase the amount of time information will be stored in the short term memory too. “ Recent studies using brain scans found that when you use working memory to perform a variety of cognitive tasks, maximum neural activity occurs in various areas of the prefrontal cortex ( Nyberg &Cabeza, 000).” “One of the main reasons why information disappears from short term memory is interference ( Estevez & Calvo, 000).” Interference is new information that overwrites information that is already there.

livepaperhelp.com

The other way to remember information is chunking. Chunking is combining separate items of information into a larger one. Its just chunks of information to remember. This also helps increase the short term memory. Chunking is where I can take like 0 numbers and try to remember them all at once, then take another 0 numbers and try to remember them too. I have used this method to study my definitions for my classes on the test. It makes me remember a lot more then trying to learn them all at once. Short term memory has to do with the front part of my brain. So when I store information it is in the front of my brain.

There are functions of short term memory. “The first is Attending, is to selectively attend to information that is relevant and disregard everything else.” Meaning to put more concentration in something and tune everything else out. Next is Rehearsal, which I have already talked about earlier to be able to increase your short term memory. This is a process of repeating information to your self over and over again to you don’t forget. Storing is the next function, which is information that you have stored for a period of time until you decide what to do with it. If you rehearse it will increase the chances of being stored for a longer period.

I use my short term memory in lots of things. I use it most in test times with school. I try to cram everything in the day before by rehearsing the answers in my head so that I will remember them. After the tests I usually forget the answers because I concentrate on something else or different answers to something else. There has been times where I forget my cell phone some where because Im concerned with something else or something is just on my mind. My short term memory needs to be increased. This way I would not forget as much as I usually do.

Short Term

I am going to try to increase my memory by rehearsing and paying more attention to things I need to know. That way I wont forget anything important anymore. This will help for test scores, misplaced items and memory’s. My little memory’s need to be remember too.

In the Birthmark Hawthorne introduces the character Georgianna whos

soul flaw is a birthmark on her face. Every other characteristic of Georgianna

is perfect. Her husband Aylmer loves science and questions her one flaw, her

birthmark. He suggests that he should try and remove it. When the moment comes

live paper help

and Aylmer finally does remove her Birthmark, everything evolves. When Aylmer

announces, My peerless bride, it is successful! You are perfect! (167)

Immediately following the removing of the Birthmark, Georgianna dies. Once

again Hawthorne uses a woman as the possessor of an evil characteristic, but it

is Aylmers insistence on trying to distort nature which leads to the death of

his wife. Aylmer is the character who possesses the evil flaw, he insists that

the Birthmark must be removed. And therefore it is obvious that Hawthorne

doesnt direct his evil characteristics only on women.

Evil is at the root of the story in The Birthmark for it is here that

Hawthorne writes about the most sinful character. In all of the seven deadly

sins committed by man; the deadliest of all is pride. Priding ones self is

terrible but carrying this vanity to another can be deadly. After reading The

Birthmark the character Aylmer finds for himself that pride costed him dearly,

he lost his lovely wife. Aylmer is representative of the sin pride. Hawthorne

describes the character in such a way that Aylmer portrays himself as Godlike.

The character Aylmer is evil because according to Hawthorne He had devoted

himself, however, too unreservedly to scientific studies ever to be weaned from

them by any second passion.. Is this the possible pride that leads a man to be

considered evil? Yes, according to evidence in the story Hamthorne makes the

character Aylmer in human by taking away his passion for his wife and having it

replaced by passion for only his work. Hawthorne describes Aylmers

preoccupation with perfecting his wifes beauty in the story when writing At

all the seasons which should have been their happiest, he invariably and

without intending it, nay, in spite of a purpose to the contrary reverted to

this one disastrous topic. . Through this text the author creates a character

that we may see into in order to reveal the one tracked mind. Pride is the

ultimate goal for Aylmar; he intends to make a prize of his wife by trying to

make her extraordinary person and alleviating any blemishes. His wife

Georgianais the innocent victim in the story because she must follow her

husbands wishes. Hawthorne once again writing in his time period made

traditional characters of society and these people were in an average class;

henceforth keeping traditional good and evil characters as in many fiction

stories. Hawthorne has created a couple who are the examples of good and evil;

Georgiana has the mark of innocence upon her and Aylmer carries delusions of

grandeur. Georgiana is admired for her beauty by the publics eye and Aylmer is

envied by the same. Hawthorne tells us outright that the two are not happy but

what must be understood is that because Aylmer is unhappy with her birthmark ,

My peerless bride, it is successful! You are perfect!, ...dearest Aylmer, I

am dying., pays the ultimate price for perfection.

Trainspotting is highly engaging and riveting. The gross scenes arent as bad as some reviewers make it out to be (though I do have a high tolerance level). In some cases, there is an added amount of surrealism that makes such a scene work, and thats the main strength of this movie.

The movie is about five childhood friends, four of whom are (or end up becoming) heroin addicts. The fifth, Begbie (Robert Carlyle), while not an addict, is a bit of a psychopath. The movie takes us through their battle with addiction. The depiction of the heroin addiction is effective because of the aforementioned surrealism, which is highly thought-provoking.

Mark Renton (Ewan McGregor) is the main focus of this story, which mainly deals with his handling of heroin addiction. In the movie, he is the only person who seems to have any depth in his character. It is as if the other characters dont possess the something special that he has, even though they might be stronger in other respects. I am not sure if this is intentional, but it fits in really well with the theme of the story. The other characters include Sick Boy (Jonny Lee Miller), Spud (Ewen Bremmer), and Tommy (Kevin McKidd).

There are really humourous scenes, enhanced all the more by the Scottish accents. There is a lot of symbolism, both with regards of the heroin addiction, and with regards to the current state of (Scottish) society. Theres even a bit of commentary with regards to AIDS. That might perhaps be the movies major flaw---it addresses too many issues through its use of clever symbolism, from neglect of children to the nature of Scotlands position in the global economy.

live paper help

Ultimately though, Trainspotting is a fairly typical movie with regards to its anti-establishment theme. It is nothing more than a collection of interesting cinematic ideas stringed together. Each one is worthy of exploration in its own merit, and each one has enough momentum to keep the viewer watching intently, but there is no complete deep message here. Perhaps that in itself is a statement of sorts.

Themes of Literature

Love

“Love is born with the pleasure of looking at each other, it is fed with the necessity of seeing each other, it is concluded with the impossibility of separation!” So is marriage a job, or is it a beautiful thing? Do people enjoy the emotion and the romance of love, or is it just something to do? Everyone can be touched by the romantic aspects of quotes like this particular one, however this is not a realistic conception of love. In my opinion, most love scenarios are based on materialistic things, and there really is no such emotion which consumes a man and a women to become one. There are basic essential reasons why people “love” one anther. The conveniences of the relationship is the primary reason. This can be broken down into sub sections. Those sub-sections include child bearing and economic circumstance which play an important role in the “so called” emotion of love.

Almost ninety percent of American women marry a man who earns more money than they do. While economic situations play a role in every thing we do in life, economic circumstances are also the vital reasons for marriages. The simple fact that only ten percent of women marry men who are of equal or less financial status proves this. Many women in America work part time, while their spouse works full-time and brings home the majority of the family’s income. Women’s economic benefits from marriage are excessive. Economic stability is important to everyone. In today’s society, two incomes are the difference between a suburban neighborhood and an urban one. Most people prefer a suburban neighborhood, marriage enables more people to choose this.

livepaperhelp.com

In today’s culture many women have children out of wedlock. In the year of 00 alone there were 1,58,768 births to children out of wedlock. The fathers who want to be apart of their child’s life try to make the best of the situation. The mothers try to make the best of the situation as well, therefore the supposedly logical conclusion would be to marry each other, and take care of their situation. It is said that children keep families together. Parents feel obligated to stay together for the sake of their children. The father needs the mother for nurturing, and the mother needs the father for financial stability. These two things go hand in hand. For the child’s sake the mother wants to live in a beautiful area, where the criminal activity is at a low. After a study that was taken place at the University of Berkeley, a conclusion was made that criminal activity occurs more frequently in lower income areas. While men do in fact have it in them to be nurturers, women are born with a natural instinct to nurture their child. This can be seen clearly in the naturalistic observation of the animal kingdom. Most people believe this and that is why two people stay married. They claim love when it is not love for each other, but rather love for the child they have made.

The first thing most people think about when they hear love is the romance of love. By romance of love, simply meant, the Romeo and Juliet, and similar stories. There is much more to love than that. Marriage is the symbol of love. When two people are in love they decide to make a lifetime commitment. With the life time commitment there are downfalls. Divorce rates have skyrocketed since World War II. Fifty percent of marriages are expected to fail. The divorce rates started rising in the sixties and rose even more during the seventies. They leveled off in the eighties and since then have declined slightly. More and more couples are divorcing for a numerous amount of reasons. Poor communications, financial problems, a lack of commitment, infidelity are all major reasons for divorce. These things are all very common occurrences in marriages.

At the time, marriage is a convenience for the two parties involved. There are many different situations as to what these conveniences pertain to, but they all fall under conveniences. Some reasons are, because of economical situations and other reasons are family situations. Either way it is what is convenient for the man and the women. In no way are most marriages based on this fabricated emotion between a man and a women that we believe is romantic love. This is I believe most love scenarios are based on materialistic things, and there really is no such emotion which consumes a man and a women to become one. In becoming one people would have to become selfless and except not only their own faults but the faults of another. While this is a conceivable notion it is rare. That is why love is rare and uncommon. So what is love? It is a situation that makes life easier. It is the farthest thing away from an emotion two people feel when they get to know each other.

OBLA onset of blood lactic acid accumulation

Other wise known as the ‘lactate threshold’ this is the point at which lactate levels in blood exceed resting values during the lactic acid build up due to exercise.

Long term adaptations of OBLA to aerobic training.

 This point governs the lactic aerobic threshold

live paper help

 Trained athletes begin OBLA at higher work intensities

 And higher values of VOmax than untrained people.

By definition, the lactate threshold has been thought to reflect the change in dominance between the aerobic and anaerobic energy systems. In untrained people the lactate threshold occurs at around 50-60% of their VOmax , whereas elite endurance athletes may not reach their lactate threshold until around 70-80% of their VOmax during high intensity training, such as 00 metre flat-out run, lactic acid levels can reach up to 15-0 times resting values.

EPOC excess post exercise oxygen consumption

During the recovery process after exercise, this is the total amount of oxygen required to replace ATP, restore PC and remove lactic acid in the working tissue.

After every exercise there are four tasks that need to be completed before the exhausted muscle can operate at full efficiency again.

 Replacement of ATP

 Removal of lactic acid

 Replenishment of myoglobin with oxygen

 Replacement of glycogen

The 1st three of these require oxygen in substantial amounts. Hence, the reason for rapid breathing and high pulse rate to carry oxygen to the muscle cells. This need for oxygen to replace ATP and remove lactic acid is known as excess post-exercise oxygen consumption (EPOC)

Oxygen deficit- the difference between oxygen actually used and the oxygen required for an amount of exercise.

If exercise is intense enough active cells run out of PC. Not enough ATP is produced aerobically, so glycolysis takes over as the predominant method of ATP supply. Eventually, ATP production via the anaerobic energy system will be used up and exercise must stop. During the exercise period an oxygen deficit is created, this is because the muscle requirement for oxygen is larger than the oxygen supply. The oxygen deficit for a specific exercise regime is calculated as the difference between oxygen required and oxygen actually consumed.

The Simpsons is one of Americas most popular television shows.

It ranks as the number one television program for viewers under

eighteen years of age. However, the ideals that The Simpsons conveys

are not always wholesome, sometimes not even in good taste. It is

inevitable that The Simpsons is affecting children.

Matt Groening took up drawing to escape from his troubles in

177. At the time, Groening was working for the L.A. Reader, a free

weekly newspaper. He began working on Life in Hell, a humorous comic

strip consisting of people with rabbit ears. The L.A. Reader picked up

a copy of his comic strip and liked what they saw. Life in Hell

gradually became a common comic strip in many free weeklies and

college newspapers across the country. It even developed a cult

status. (Varhola, 1)

Life in Hell drew the attention of James L. Brooks, producer

of works such as Taxi, The Mary Tyler Moore Show, and Terms of

Endearment. Brooks originally wanted Groening to make an animated

pilot of Life in Hell. Groening chose not to do so in fear of loosing

royalties from papers that printed the strip. Groening presented

Brooks with an overweight, balding father, a mother with a blue

beehive hairdo, and three obnoxious spiky haired children. Groening

intended for them to represent the typical American family who love

each other and drive each other crazy. Groening named the characters

after his own family. His parents were named Homer and Margaret and

he had two younger sisters named Lisa and Maggie. Bart was an anagram

for brat. Groening chose the last name Simpson to sound like the

typical American family name. (Varhola, )

Brooks decided to put the 0 or 60 second animations on

between skits on The Tracy Ullman Show on the unsuccessful Fox

network. Cast members Dan Castellaneta and Julie Kavner did the

voices of Homer and Marge. Yeardley Smith (later to star in Hermans

Head) did the voice of Lisa. Nancy Cartwright did the voice of Bart.

Cartwright previously supplied the voices for many cartoons, including

Galaxy High, Fantastic Max, Richie Rich, Snorks, Pound Puppies, My

Little Pony, and Glo-Friends. Tracy Ullman later added Cartwright to

her cast. (Dale and Trich, 11)

I have always been told that our mistakes develop our character, that we are educated in life’s lessons as we learn for ourselves the do’s and don’ts of life. ‘Mistakes are good for you as long as you learn from them,’ Dad would always say to me. Well I tend to repeat my mistakes so often that they border on becoming habits. My life would be so much easier if I could learn from my mistakes the first time I make them.

For instance one particularly memorable morning of mine I woke up at my boyfriends house with no memory of how I got there. After a while it came back to me. There had been a promotion at work. A party. My boyfriend and tequila shots. All my friends were there. After one shot I started to feel so good and relaxed. Just a couple more drinks. The next thing I knew I was doing a shot with anyone I could find. Then there I was dancing, throwing my arms around and twirling and twisting in a drunken imitation of MTV music videos. I remember my boyfriend and I arriving at his house after the party. He was asking me to get out of the truck. I was sitting there wondering how I would get out without using my legs. I was in a deep contemplation about why I could not move my arms or legs. I felt so content to just sit there in a drunken stupor.

live paper help

I should have learned that I could not hold my alcohol the first time I woke up in a strange place. Every time it happened I would promise myself never to do it again. I should have learned self control. But I had to make this mistake many other times before my education in this subject was complete. How much time would I have saved if I had learned from my mistake the first time I made it?

Another mistake I should have learned from is lying. In this instance I was invited over to the home of an acquaintance for dinner. Lisa was an older woman my mothers age

whom I had lived with for a year or so when I first moved to Las Vegas. I was now living on my own and rarely saw her. I ate with her once a week, saturday night, because I was obligated to continue my relationship with her. Well one week I really didn’t want to go. I wanted a night to my self, didn’t want to deal with all the boring small talk and politeness. So I told her that I couldn’t come because my mothers birthday was that night (which it was) and that my family was having a party for her (which it wasn’t). I figured that there was no way that she would find out because she doesn’t talk to my family. So I made my excuses with her and she was disappointed but fine with it because after all family is important.

I thought I had gotten away with it until the next week when I came over she was asking me all sorts of questions about the party. Who was there, what did we do, was it fun? I had a gut felling that she knew I had lied. I just knew she knew. I spent the night racking my brain trying to figure out how she could have found out. After a while it came to me that she went to church with my sister Retta. So I called Retta and asked her if she had talked to Lisa that sunday. As it turns out she had talked to her. Lisa had asked her how that party for our mother went and Retta had told her that here had been no party. So I had to call Lisa and apologize to her. She was not upset at all she understood I need some nights to do my own thing.

I was so embarrassed at being caught in a lie. The next time I saw her I couldn’t even look her in the eye. The bad thing was that I knew that I was old enough to know better. I spent my childhood learning not to lie. I need to learn from my mistakes the first time around. If I did my life would be so much simpler and easier.
