Wish You Were Here

I view the music industry as a machine in which the youth are sucked in and told exactly what to wear, what to look like, and who to be therefore counterfeiting their own individuality. The album "Wish You Were Here" by Pink Floyd conveys my views on this vampiric industry in which we so blindly follow perfectly.

The music industry is known for its habit of changing an artist's music and look to satisfy that of our public. The second song, "Welcome to the Machine" elaborates on this idea. The second verse goes

"Welcome my son, welcome to the machine

What did you dream?

It's alright we told you what to dream

You dreamed of a big star, he played a mean guitar

He always ate at the steak bar

He loved to drive his Jaguar

So welcome to the machine"

These words to me say, that no matter what you have in mind for your music career, we (the music industry) will shape your dream into something that is fake, materialistic, and has totally nothing to do with your self-expression through music.

One thing that music industry does to musicians is present to them fake things such as money clothes, sex, and a fraudulent power. The fourth song, "Wish You Were Here", to me, is asking "Can you tell the difference between something that is real and something that is fake?" (With respect to the music industry). The first two verses go

"So, so you think you can tell heaven from hell, blue skies from pain

Can you tell a green field from a cold steel rail? A smile from a veil,

Do you think you can tell?

And did they get you to trade your heroes for ghosts? Hot ashes for tees?

Hot air for a cool breeze? Cold comfort for change?

And did you exchange a walk on part in the war for a lead-role in a cage?'

One can see that the writer is asking someone if they can tell the difference between two things. I believe that these things symbolize real objects in the real world and fake things from the music industry. The line that stirs up the greatest emotions in me is the last line in the second verse. "…a walk on part in the war…" refers to a person's choice to remain independent of control and use that to make a difference. While the next part of the line is, "…for a lead role in the cage?" refers to the fact that you may become a big star but you have no control over your individuality.

I myself do not believe I will be I the music industry when Im older. But because of Pink Floyd's album "Wish You Were Here" I know the dangers and wrong doings of the music industry.
